The real cost of aging

It’s said that it costs about one million dollars to raise a child, but how much does it cost to age? No two seniors will face exactly the same challenges in aging, but by looking at approximations of the main expenses after 65, we can estimate how much it truly costs to grow old in America.

Out-of-Pocket Medical Expenses While every American who turns 65 qualifies for the government health insurance program Medicare, seniors can still accumulate significant healthcare costs during their retirement. Copays, prescriptions, hearing aids and other out of expense pockets can add up dramatically. In May, Fidelity Benefits Consulting estimated the average medical expenses for a 65 year-old couple to be $220,000 for the remainder of their retirement. This figure has actually gone down 8% since last year due to changes to Medicare instituted as part of the Affordable Care Act. Brad Kimler of

Fidelity noted, “It is extremely important that health care costs are factored into retirement savings strategies today so that retirees can be prepared to pay their medical bills throughout retirement.”

X-Factors: Inflation and Rising Healthcare Costs In a market economy, prices never stay stagnant for long. Retirement experts advise that seniors assume inflation will be at least 3% annually. At this rate of inflation, costs double every 24 years.

Inflation represents the average increase in all costs over time, but health care costs are rising at a rate more rapid that inflation. While average healthcare costs

for retirees decreased in 2012, the trend is for increasing healthcare costs overall. According toInsurance Journal, average out-of-pocket healthcare costs increased about 6% in 2012 and 12% in 2013.

What’s more, these figures are based on the largely unpredictable factor of lifespan.

A longer lifespan means more costs. It’s not unreasonable to expect life-expectancy to increase with advances in medicine and technology, and as American society becomes more focused on healthy lifestyles. While the average life-expectancy of

79, most people hope to (and should plan to) live beyond 79.

Successful ways to stretch retirement savings Many budding retirees plan to travel, relax and enjoy the company of their spouses when they officially stop working. But such plans only are possible if men and women take steps to secure their financial futures in retirement.

According to a recent survey by the personal finance education site MoneyTips. com, roughly one-third of Baby Boomers have no retirement plan. The reason some may have no plan is they have misconceptions about how much money they will need in retirement. Successful retirees understand the steps to take and how to live on a budget.

• Have a plan. Many people simply fail to plan for retirement. Even men and women who invest in an employer-sponsored retirement program, such as a 401(k), should not make that the only retirement planning they do.

Speak with a financial advisor who can help you develop a plan that ensures you don’t

outlive your assets.

• Set reasonable goals.

Retirement nest eggs do not need to be enormous. Many retirees have a net worth of less than $1 million, and many people live comfortably on less than $100,000 annually. When planning for retirement, don’t be dissuaded because you won’t be buying a vineyard or villa in Europe.

• Pay down or avoid debt while you can. Retiring with debt is a big risk. Try to eliminate all of your debts before you retire and, once you have, focus your energy on growing your investments and/or saving money for retirement.

Hobbies for the golden years

Whether retirement is on the horizon or has already begun, more free time equates to an increased opportunity to fill your days with enjoyable activities.

Individuals facing busy schedules are often forced to push hobbies to the sidelines, as more pressing things, such as a job, household responsibilities, and parenting tasks, are accomplished.

Once retirement arrives, a newfound freedom in your schedule may occur, and there can be plenty of hours to devote to the hobbies and pastimes you find enjoyable.

According to research, hobbies can have many benefits. They may serve as an emotional outlet or a way to relax.

Hobbies can keep the mind and hands n ly active. They also allow for quiet time and mind wandering -- which can free up creative thinking. Hobbies can also u- serve as a means to connecting with e people and opening up new groups of friends.

There are many hobbies you can consider, depending on physical health and abilities. These may be hobbies you once enjoyed in the past or new activities to expand your hori-

zons. And hobbies need not be crafty in the traditional sense, just about any activity -- even being a mentor -- can be a form of a hobby.

Starting a hobby When deciding on a hobby, you can first take an inventory of your skills and interests. If you have always been handy around wood and construction, perhaps a woodworking hobby will be enjoyable and also may work as a source of income revenue.

Other activities that require the use of the hands and mind include building model airplanes, knitting, needlepoint, painting, puzzles, quilting, scrapbooking, and crocheting. These can keep the mind active and improve dexterity and fine motor skills.

Next, you may want to consider the costs surrounding a hobby. While something like taking photos may have relatively low costs, collectibles, exotic sports, sports cars, and travel could become expensive. It’s important to weight the costs against your finances to ensure that you will be financially comfortable while engaging in this particular hobby.

Explore what your friends are doing. If you want to get into a new hobby, ask neighbors and friends what they do to keep busy -- and try it out.

You just may find that you’re naturally inclined to do this type of activity and enjoy it.

Visit a hobby shop or craft store and browse through the aisles. See where your attention is drawn and give that activity a try. From building model trains to cultivating an herb garden, there are dozens of ideas to try.

These dog breeds are especially compatible with seniors Pets often make ideal companions. They are around when a person needs support, they can provide protection for those living alone, they’re always willing to lend an ear to problems, and many tend to offer unconditional love. Seniors facing an empty nest or the loss of a spouse may find pets can buoy their spirits. Studies have shown that seniors can benefit both mentally and physically from having a pet around. Pets can alleviate anxiety, depression and boredom.

While pets can provide comfort and companionship, they remain a significant responsibility. Seniors should find an animal that will fit in with their lifestyles. This is an important consideration for those seniors who travel frequently or have mobility issues. In addition, men and women living in senior communities or assisted living facilities should determine if there are any pet restrictions in place.

Those seniors who have decided that a dog will be the best fit can choose among several breeds that may be a good match for their needs. When selecting a dog, consider both size and temperament. Smaller dogs tend to be easier to handle and will need less mainte-

nance. They are easily carried and won’t take as long to bathe and groom.

Smaller dogs also consume less food than larger breeds, reducing the expense of dog food and the hassle of wrangling large, heavy bags of chow.

Temperament is also important, as some breeds tend to be more easygoing than others. Larger breeds may be preferable to a smaller breeds, which tend to be hyperactive. However, always remember there are pros and cons to each breed, and each dog will demonstrate his own personality traits. The following are some dogs that can be especially compatible with seniors.

• Pug: Equally playful and willing to be a

lap dog, the pug requires little exercise and grooming. The breed is typically nonaggressive and submissive. Pugs are good-natured and playful; they don’t often bark and are easy to train.

• Shih Tzu: The Shih Tzu lives for attention, but this breed can be dominant and difficult to train. The Shih Tzu will be alert to its surroundings and, despite its small stature, can be a good watchdog.

• Pomeranian: Pomeranians look like big balls of fur and can bring a smile to an owner’s face. The breed tends to be perky, can display dominance and can be difficult to train. Because Pomeranians can be dog-aggressive, they

may be best as the only pet in the house.

• Yorkshire Terrier: The Yorkie is a diminutive breed in size only, as they tend to have exuberant personalities that dwarf their stature.

The ideal lap dog, Yorkies want to lie around and lounge, though some do like to bark. If the fur is kept short in a “puppy cut,” the dog can be easy to maintain.

• Pembroke Welsh Corgi: This medium-sized dog hails from Wales and typically requires only moderate exercise and little grooming. They are easy to train and moderately dominant. They don’t bark excessively, and they often get along with other dogs.

• Schnauzer: Available in three sizes, Schnauzers are good companions and protectors. This is an intelligent and loyal breed and will need to be kept amused to stave off boredom.

• Brussels Griffon: These dogs do not shed, but they will require professional grooming at least once every 3 months. If socialized early, the Griffon can be a good companion but will likely remain wary of strangers. They are good watchdogs and devoted to their owners.

What’s next after retirement?

Scores of people spend their working days dreaming of the moment they are eligible for retirement. They may have retirement counted down to the minutes and seconds, particularly if they’ve been in a job that hasn’t been the most enjoyable. But many people find that once they retire they do not know what to do to fill their time.

Boredom actually may be a side effect of retirement, and some people actually want to go back to work.

Much of the focus when planning for retirement concerns finances. All other factors take a backseat. Therefore, there may be emotional issues that arise during retirement, and retirees are not always prepared to deal with such issues. Part of what makes work fulfilling is the opportunity to get out of the house and interact with others who are not members of your family. It’s easy to fall into a rut when you are not being mentally stimulated by conversation from different people. * Realize it’s alright not to love retirement. Just because the grass seemed greener in someone else’s yard, doesn’t mean it always turns out to be that way. It is OK to accept that maybe retirement isn’t entirely what you expected and to make changes that can enable the experience to be better.

Don’t wait to make decisions about assisted living options In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.

– Benjamin Franklin Throughout our lifetimes, we make plans for various stages of our lives – college, marriage, homes, families, but put very little thought or planning into the inevitable, end of life care. As Benjamin Franklin said, it is a certainty, but what’s not so certain is what that scenario looks like, and there are so many variables.

Most folks want to “stay in their own homes” as long as possible, which sometimes means, past when it’s feasible to make a move to an assisted living community. That also means that many people end up caring for elderly parents at home, but when their needs have progressed to the point that she requires professional 24-hour care at assisted living.

Have you done any research over the past year and even chosen a senior community in your neighborhood that meets your budget? Then when you contact the community, you learn that they have a wait list.

This is an aging community, which means that many of the assisted living communities, adult care homes and other facilities are generally full. At this time, both Nehalem Bay House and Kilchis House have “waiting lists.” It’s important for elderly residents to do research, explore the options and make some choices, before there’s a crisis and they are in need of immediate care.

Planning ahead and getting on a wait list can give you more control over your options, in addition to saving you time and heartache. “We invite folks that are thinking about

being comfortable and well cared for in their last years to come for a tour,” said Debbie Meier, director at Kilchis House. “You don’t have to be ready to move in, but it’s a really good idea to be on our waiting list, so when the time comes when your loved ones is ready to move in, they are given priority.”

There is limited availability of apartments in assisted living communities in our area. This means that there is a good chance that your preferred community is full; senior living communities are fully occupied or nearly full. Most senior communities require payment to be added to a wait list. Fortunately, most community wait list deposits are fully refundable at any time. The cost of the deposit can vary wait list deposits range from $250–$2,000

for independent living, assisted living and memory care. Nehalem Bay House and Kilchis House only require a $100.00 reservation fee to be added to a waiting list. Special notes are made regarding a future resident, ie. health condition, possible future move-in dates, etc.

Then when an apartment becomes available, the waiting list is analyzed as to most immediate needs and staff contacts those on the waiting list.

“We always try to be as accommodating as possible,” said Meier. “And we sometimes, hear that they aren’t quite ready yet. Then we make another call on down the list, and it’s the perfect time for another person to come home to Kilchis House.” If something happens and you want to cancel your reservation, the fee is 100 percent refundable. Make sure

to speak with a staff member at your preferred community if you have questions about their wait list policy.

Families and the senior often want to be at home as long as physically, and mentally possible, but oftentimes it’s just not realistic, or the best thing for everyone. Jobs keep men and women busy and provide a sense of purpose in their lives, so it’s understandable that retirees feel bored once those jobs are no longer a part of their lives. But just because you no longer have

Starting your second act: How to choose your next career The days when professionals would spend their entire professional lives with a single firm are largely a thing of the past. In fact, many people not only switch companies multiple times before retirement, but some even switch professions before retiring.

As exciting as it can be to pursue a new career, men and women over 50 know that such a decision is not without risk. While younger professionals with few obligations can often handle bumps in the road on their way to a second career, older professionals making a similar move often must consider the potential effects such a pursuit might have on their families, finances and futures, including their retirements. But as difficult as it may seem to pursue a second career after your fiftieth birthday, there are steps men and women over 50 can take when pursuing a new career to ensure their second act is as successful as the first.

• Decide what you want, and not just what you want to do. The desire to pursue a second career no doubt stems from more than just dissatisfaction with a current profession. Many people switch jobs or even careers because they find their current careers too demanding, leaving little time for family or hobbies that have nothing to do with work. If what you really want is more time at home or more time to pursue a particular hobby, then keep this in mind when looking for a second career, and make sure that career won’t demand too much of your time. For example, if your goal in finding a new career is to get more work-life balance, then starting your own business, which can require long hours at the outset and even after the business has established itself, might not be for you. But if what you want is a more challenging career and to be your own boss, then you will likely find the cost of achieving that goal, even if that cost is more demands on your time, is worth it.

• Assess your skillset. Professionals over 50 have lots to offer, but it’s still important for such men and women to make an honest assessment of their skillset and find a career in which those skills are transferable. Some men and women might want to pursue a second career that will make little to no use of their skillset, and that’s perfectly alright. But extra schooling might be necessary in such situations, and going back to school oftentimes requires a considerable commitment of both time and money. For those who simply want to put their existing skills to

use in a different field or environment, assess those skills and look for lines of work in which they figure to be especially valuable. If there are any particular aspects of your current job that you want to avoid in the future, consider that when assessing your skills and choosing a second career. Even if they don’t know it, established professionals over 50 have many transferable skills, and such skills can be a considerable asset when pursuing a second career, especially when those skills have been assessed and can be applied to a new profession.

• Make a trial run. Nowhere does it say that professionals can’t take a trial run at a second career while still fully engaged in their first career. In fact, testing the waters before you jump in is a good way to gauge your interest in a potential second career and how well your skillset applies to that field. A trial run, which can be conducted by volunteering with a nonprofit organization or through a part-time job or simply offering your services to a company free of charge in exchange for a chance to learn how the business operates, can shed light on the inner workings of a particular industry, showing you how things work behind the curtain. Testing the waters may reaffirm your belief that a certain line of work is for you, or it might send you back to the drawing board. Either way, it’s valuable experience that may reassure you that whatever decision you ultimately make is the right one.

• Don’t go it alone. Switching careers after 50 carries some risk, but it’s certainly a risk that many before you have been willing to take. If you know any people, be it a friend, family member or former or even current colleague, who has reinvented themselves professionally, then speak with these people and ask for any advice they might have. Tips for retirees traveling abroad Men and women often dream of jetsetting around the world when they retire. Traveling the globe without worrying about timelines or what’s going on back at the office is something many retirees reward themselves with after a life of hard work.

As liberating as world travel can be, retirees still must exercise caution when traveling abroad.

The following are a few safety tips for retirees who are ready to make their dream retirements a reality by setting off for parts unknown.

• Stay in touch. Escapism is a big part of the attraction of travel for travelers young and old. But while you may want to avoid contact with the outside world on your travels, it’s still necessary to stay in touch with your loved ones. Retirees who plan to take extended trips overseas should purchase an international mobile phone plan that allows them to use their phones regardless of what country they happen to be in.

A quick text message to a son or daughter back home is all it takes to let your family know you are safe and having the time of your life. Work out a communication plan with your loved ones back home before departing, agreeing to contact them via phone call, email or Skype at least once per week for the duration of your trip. This is a good way to share your experiences and help your relatives rest easy knowing that you are safe.

• Don’t store all of your important documents in one place. When traveling overseas, it

can be convenient to keep important items like traveler’s cheques, credit cards, passports, and identification in one place. However, storing all of your sensitive documents or financial items in one place is very risky, as a lost or stolen bag can leave you without identification or access to your funds. When traveling, couples should carry their own passports on their persons and split up credit cards and traveler’s cheques. This way you still have access to your funds, and one of you still has identification should items be lost or stolen.

• Do your homework. Unplanned day trips are common among travelers who have been traveling for long periods of time. While such jaunts can add an element of spontaneity to a trip, they also can be quite dangerous if travelers have not done their homework on a particular destination. mised. Before traveling abroad, visit your physician and get a full physical. Refill any medications you might need during your trip, and speak with your physician about how to handle any medical emergencies while overseas.

Carry your physician’s name and telephone number with you at all times, so local medical professionals can contact him or her should you experience a medical emergency.

Once you have arrived at your destination, it’s important that you continue to prioritize your health. Make sure the water is safe to drink before taking a sip, and investigate local cuisine to ensure it won’t enflame any existing medical conditions you may have. The lightest shade should go under the brow, a darker one closer to the lashes and the darkest on the crease. The three should be blended properly. According to others, matte eye shadow is better because it doesn’t show wrinkles like frosted does. Use earthy tones to create depth and apply the darkest shadow to the outside of the lids.

For the best result, use cream blushes in warm copper and gold tones and sweep it from the cheeks to the temples in an

arc. To keep your lipstick from bleeding and feathering, use blush to line your lips rather than lip liner. This will also allow your lipstick to remain longer. Use soft matte colors, like berry, coral, pink or peach, to make lips look fuller.

Be careful with loose translucent powder. Use it sparingly.

Apply it once in the morning and leave it at that. Don’t reapply it several times throughout the day; you will just accentuate any lines and wrinkles on your face. If touchups are needed, use a fluffy brush.
