Riverside Training Centers moving forward in 2020 ect, our ongoing fight for consistent funding to allow our direct support professionals (DSP’s) to earn a living wage is never ending. We are so lucky to operate in a district lead by Representative Brad Witt and Senator Betsy Johnson. In this last legislative session, our state’s leaders allocated the largest budget to the IDD system in the history of our services: $30 million. It is important to note that Senator Johnson, specifically, was instrumental in that epic achievement and we are incredibly thankful.

There are exciting changes happening for us! Riverside Training Centers will now be known as lifempowered. The name change is part of our agency’s five-year strategic plan that includes updating our mission and vision statements, focusing on education for both our employees and the community at large, our name change, and hopefully, a capital campaign for a new building. This new building will feature an ADA accessible and beautiful meeting space which will be available for the community to use, as well as improved administrative space so that we can continue to provide unparalleled service to Columbia County.

With so much change underway, our primary focus will continue to focus on the reason we serve the community in this way:

Supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to live the lives they choose.

Our success is your success because any community that excludes even one member is no community at all. For more than four decades, we have been a leader in this community as we work with those we

support, as well as their families, with the goal of enabling people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to engage as active and valuable members of their community.

We are so fortunate that Columbia County has embraced our mission and supported our ongoing growth and development over these many years.

As we move forward with our strategic plan, we want to thank everyone for their continued support and make sure you know our needs and next steps.

Of course, as a private, not for profit organization, ongoing funding is always a concern. While we are additionally focused on our capital campaign proj-

DSPs are some of the most selfless, hard-working members in our community. The monies allocated by the legislators are an attempt to move the average DSP wage to $15 an hour, which isn’t a lot for all they do, and as a state, we aren’t there yet, but we are getting closer.

DSPs are skill-building coaches, educators, counselors and friends. They provide first aid, adminis-

ter medications, provide transportation, support people with their personal care, including bathing, and perform other duties often delegated to nurses, just to name a few. As such, we are immensely grateful for our 60+ DSPs who show up every day to excel in their profession and make an indelible impact in people’s lives.

As we continue in our fight for increased funding, we are also interested in support from our neighbors in growing our Board of Directors, funding, and inkind contributions toward our capital campaign, as well as participation on work committees for special projects along the way.
