There is plenty of work taking place inside the new pool building. With the roof on and the walls up, it is very hard to see what is happening without peeking inside. The pool installation company is busy digging and forming the sides and bottoms of the new pools. The pool plumbing

is being connected to the pumps and boilers which are all below deck and out of site. Many people have asked about the installation of UV light filtration to control microorganisms and reduce chemicals (chlorine) in the water. We have made all the provisions to install this equipment but due to earlier budget setbacks, the actual purchase of the equipment was put on hold. Until we are further along with the build and can ensure that we will have enough funds to complete the essential components, we will not be purchasing the UV equipment. This equipment can however, be added at any time before or after the completion of the facility.

Lastly, I want to comment about the parking, which we know has been in short supply lately. Thank you to everyone that has been willing to park away from the Rec Center and walk or ride a bike. It has not been ideal but it sure is not as bad as some envisioned either.

The Parks and Recreation staff have been really busy all summer with outdoor programs, camps and sports.

Now with Fall coming on, we will start focusing on indoor classes and things to do if the weather turns foul. Our very own staffer, Sports Coordinator, Michael Cavanaugh was awarded the City of Newport Employee of the Year this year award at the Newport Chamber

of Commerce Award Banquet. If you happen to see Mike at any one of the multiple events and leagues he directs, make sure to congratulate him for a job well done. Long time staffer Heather Hughes has recently accepted a new Job in Hawaii and we wish her well. There are many opportunities to join the Parks and Recreation Department staff team, please feel free to ask us how to apply and what we have available.

INFORMATION Recreation Center Passes We now offer our annual pass holders access to the following classes at no additional cost: Stretch & Flex, On the Ball, Gentle Basics, Total Body Conditioning, On a Roll, Teen Fitness Training and MAC class (Moderate Aerobic Conditioning Class).

Recreation Center passes allow residents and nonresidents use of the walking/jogging track, cardio and strength training areas, and all gymnasium drop-in activities.

The annual pass also includes use of the Newport Swimming Pool. (Classes taught by non-staff instructors require a separate fee)

Donate to our youth Scholarship Fund.

Our Youth Scholarship Fund provides assistance to children in financial need, allowing them to participate in some of the great structured activities offered through the Newport Parks and Recreation Department. This program is funded by events such as the Coast Hills Classic Mountain Bike Race, and generous donations from community members. When you arrive, please check in at the control desk in the main lobby. For your convenience and safety, there is always a staff person available to serve you during open hours.

Our 45,000 square foot facility features: • Full Size Gym - Drop-in basketball, volleyball, and more - Rental times available.

• Multi-purpose Gym - Drop-in pickleball, soccer & recreational skating - Martial Arts, gymnastics, indoor park and more - Rental times available.

• Cardio/Strength Training Area - Strength training and cardio machines including elliptical machines, treadmills, recumbent bikes, upright bikes, stair climber, rowing machine, Smith machine, strength-training machines, cable-cross machines, vertical knee lift, inner/outer thigh machine, and a large selection of free weights, dumbbells, bars, benches, speed bags, and equipment.

• Stretching/Exercise Area - Pilates balls, medicine balls, bosu balls, stretching bands, jump ropes, weight belts, aerobic steps, ab rollers and exercise mats.

Registration The following information pertains to Fall 2016 registration for Newport Parks and Recreation activities. Listings of the activity/class dates, times, fees, etc. are located in each section of the Activity Guide.

• General Registration: We ask that you pre-register for all activities and classes to avoid cancellation due to low enrollment.

• Walk-in Registration: Register at the Newport Recreation Center, 225 SE Avery Street, plus some of our larger events and activities now offer online registration through our website at www.newportoregon.gov/recreation • Mail-in Registration: Please return a completed registration form with payment by check or money order to Newport Parks and Recreation Department, 169 SW Coast Hwy., Newport, OR 97365.

• Late Registration: Participants joining a class at its mid-point or beyond will pay 50% of the original fee. There will be no prorated amount prior to the midpoint of a class. Late registration will only be permitted pending instructor approval and space availability.

• Payment Methods: All programs and reservations require full payment of fees at the time of registration. The Newport Parks and Recreation Department accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover, cash, and checks or money orders made payable to “The City of Newport.”

• Refund Policy: Full refunds will be given if this Department cancels classes. At the participant’s request, prorated refunds will be given after a class begins, subject to a $5.00 service charge to recover administrative expenses. Please allow 2-3 weeks for processing.

• Pass Extensions: A Pass Extension Request Form must be submitted for review for any pass extension request, and only one pass extension per year will be granted. Requests for an extension due to medical reasons must be accompanied by a doctor’s verification. Vacations will not be considered for pass extensions, and passes cannot be “put on hold” or temporarily suspended.

A minimum four week extension and approval by the Recreation Superintendent or Aquatic Supervisor is required for all pass extensions. There will be no pass extensions given on 1-month and 3-month passes.

• Scholarships: Scholarships are available for certain programs to those who qualify as funds allow. Please contact us for current information.

• Financial Assistance: Financial assistance is available to City of Newport residents who qualify under the Financial Assistance Program.

• Photo Usage: On occasion, staff may take photos or videos of participants. Please be aware that these may be used in future guides, pamphlets, flyers, and for general publicity of programs and activities.

Kodokan Judo

Pilates Mat Class

Tuesdays & Thursdays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

(No class Nov. 24) Ages 7 and up Youth - $30.00/month Adult - $50.00/month Instructor: Julie Koyama Kodokan Judo is an Olympic sport with its origin in Japanese Budo. Judo teaches self-discipline and self-reliance, as well as being very physical. Classes include tumbling, stretching, and strengthening exercises. The first objective will be learning how to fall safely. When that is mastered, students will move on to the actual techniques and learning to work together. Judo is a sport that can be practiced throughout the lifetime of an individual.

Julie holds a 5th degree black belt from the United States Judo Federation. She is a Pan American Confederationrated referee, has A-level (the highest rating) teaching and judging licenses in kata, an A-level teaching certificate, as well as coaching through the USJF. She is currently the Director of Development for the USJF and serves on the Board of Examiners for the NW Yudashakai. She has over 25 years of teaching experience.

Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Punch cards: 10 classes/$55.00, 20 classes/$100.00, or $6.50 drop-in Instructor: Kelly Ricketts Enhance the connection between mind and body while building strength and flexibility through Pilates. This class is Beginning Intermediate – for people who have basic knowledge of principles. Pilates can help strengthen core muscles, which also improves the postural muscles supporting the spine and neck. We will also occasionally use props to add to the classes.

Ms. Ricketts began taking pilates classes almost twenty years ago. She is a certified Stott Pilates Rehab instructor in Mat and Reformer.

Olympic-Style Tae Kwon Do - Adult Mondays & Fridays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. (no classes Sept. 4 & Dec. 26) Wednesdays 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. $35.00/month Instructor: Richard Fowler Learn traditional and Olympic styles with USTU, WRF certified instructors that will help increase confidence, physical fitness, flexibility, strength, and self-discipline while becoming part of a new and exciting sport. Be part of a winning team. Try the first two classes for free and see if you like it.

On the Ball!

Power Sculpt Classes beginning Sept. 20 Tuesdays 8:10 – 9:00 a.m., Saturday 8:00 – 8:50 a.m. (no classes Oct. 8 & Dec. 24) Punch cards: 10 classes/$55.00, 20 classes/$90.00 or $6.50 drop-in Instructor: Julia Clemons This is a muscle-conditioning class that will incorporate the use of weights, bands, fitness balls, and Pilates-based exercises to tone and sculpt your entire body. This class is great for all levels. Moves will be incorporated to meet individual fitness needs. Instructor Julia Clemons comes with 21 years of experience.

Free with Annual Pass Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:15 – 12:45 p.m.

(No classes Nov. 24th) 10 classes/$35.00 or $4.00 Drop-ins Instructor: Jamie Butler This class focuses on core-engaging workouts, conditioning the muscles of the body and improving balance. Swiss balls and body weight movements that everyone can participate in.

Alternating strength and cardio circuits to improve muscular development, cardiovascular endurance and whole body conditioning.

(No classes Sept 2nd,16th, Nov 11th, 24th, 25th) 10 classes/$35 or Drop-ins $4 Instructor: Jamie Butler Gentle Basics is a chair based class with simple movements and techniques to improve strength, flexibility and joint mobility.

Whether you are looking to get started or improve on your current level of fitness, this class has something for everyone.

Lesson & Practice Thursdays 4:45 – 6:45 p.m. & Sundays, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. (no classes Sept. 4, Nov. 24 & Nov. 27) $5.00 drop-in - First class is free Instructor: George Fosmire For the first hour, there will be a lesson consisting of an ongoing weekly review of basic concepts of Argentine Tango, with emphasis on a different topic each week. Moderate Aerobic Conditioning Class Free with Annual Pass (no class Nov. 24) Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:15 – 11:15 a.m.

10 classes/$50 or $6.50 drop-in fee - First class is free Instructor: Jacquelyn Oakes This moderate aerobic conditioning class is a low impact workout with great intensity and energy levels. All the muscle groups are conditioned to achieve over-all levels of fitness. Drop-ins are always welcome!

Stretch & Flex Free with Annual Pass Mondays & Wednesdays 9:15 – 9:45 am 10 classes/$25.00 or $4.00 drop-in (No classes Sept. 5 & December 25) Instructor: Heidi Rivers If you are feeling stiff in your joints and less flexible in your range of motion, give seated Stretch & Flex a try. This class is geared toward seniors, but not exclusive. Try it as a warm up or cool down to complement your exercise routine

Judo teaches self-discipline and self-reliance, as well as being very physical. Classes include tumbling, stretching, and strengthening exercises. The first objective will be learning how to fall safely. When that is mastered, students will move on to the actual techniques and learning to work together. Judo is a sport that can be practiced throughout the lifetime of an individual.

Julie holds a 5th degree black belt from the United States Judo Federation. She is a Pan American Confederationrated referee, has A-level (the highest rating) teaching and judging licenses in kata, an A-level teaching certificate, as well as coaching through the USJF. She is currently the Director of Development for the USJF and serves on the Board of Examiners for the NW Yudashakai. She has over 25 years of teaching experience.

Cross country is a great way for kids to enjoy competitive running and get in shape for winter sports.

Practices include trail runs at various locations around the Newport area.

Practices will begin in September on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Newport High School Track. Meets will be held throughout the central coast and valley area.

3rd-6th Grade Volleyball Practices will be mostly on weeknights and games will be on Saturdays at various locations around Lincoln County. All teams will focus on learning the fundamentals of volleyball, reaching personal and team goals while having fun in the process.

Player evaluation will be held prior to practices. Players are expected to attend all practices and games. Failure to do so may result in loss of playing time. 1st-2nd graders play on coed teams. 3rd graders and up are split into boy and girl leagues.

Pickleball One of the fastest growing sports in America! Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton, ping pong, and racquetball. Fast paced, easy to learn and lots of fun. Agate Beach Surf Classic September 24 & 25, 2016 A surf competition is coming back to Newport! Newport Parks & Recreation is excited to announce that the first annual Agate Beach Surf Classic is scheduled for September 24th-25th. Ossies Surf Shop, Rogue Brewery and local volunteers working alongside City staff are bringing back a much missed event. This will be a two-day event held at Agate Beach with surfing divisions for adults and youth. The competition date will be determined several weeks prior based on surfing conditions.

Colored Pencil Class Tuesdays, 10:00 – 11:30am This free 6week, level one colored pencil art class will begin September 6th.

In this class students will complete a picture using all of the techniques they have learned from prior sessions.

All supplies are provided by community partners, They Yaquina Bay Art Association and the Friends of the Newport Senior Center. Class size limited to seven.

Travel Adventure Planning Thursday, 1:00 – 2:30pm September 22 This event is for people who would like to help plan the 2017 trips that the center offers. This is your time to visit about past trips and exchange ideas on possible new trips. The current year the center has planned over 45 trips. We also continue to enjoy and celebrate the continuation of existing programs. The educational group settings are superb and they provide a safe and supportive learning environment. Knitting Group Tuesdays, 3:00 - 4:30 pm Crafty fun for all ages, male and female.

Knitting is a great tool to keep your fingers limber and your mind sharp while enjoying the company of other knitters usually working on a community donation project. Supplies abound, so come and join in on any Tuesday afternoon. This group is led by Barbara Hendricks who has many years of teaching experience.

Writers Group Saturday, 1:00 - 3:00pm Writers Group is an ongoing activity at the 60+ Center that involves participants writing their own stories. Writers do not have to read, although stories are read to one another at each weekly meeting.

Silver and Fit is an Exercise and Healthy Aging Program. Health plans offer the Silver & Fit program to eligible Medicare Advantage/ Supplement beneficiaries and group retirees. Join a community of seniors and older adults for a total-body workout appropriate for any fitness level. Silver & Fit classes are designed to increase flexibility, joint stability, balance, coordination, agility, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. The workout combines aerobic, flexibility and resistance (strength) training with plenty of friendly fun. Come into the office to see if you qualify.

Adaptive Tai Chi Tuesdays, 1:00 – 2:00pm This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the benefits of Tai Chi at a pace that accommodates various physical limitations, but allows for the improvements this exercise can offer its participants. Instructor Jeff Cheever.

Arthritis Exercise Program Wednesdays & Fridays, 9:30 - 10:30 am This self-led fitness class is a fun way to build strength and flexibility for body and mind.

Better Bones & Balance Wednesdays and Fridays, 12:30 – 1:30 pm The Better Bones & Balance Program (BBB) is based on research from Oregon State University’s Bone Research Laboratory. The BBB classes are designed to gradually improve balance and strength to avoid falls and maintain independence.

Breath & Balance Wednesdays & Fridays, 3:00 - 4:00 pm This is a self- led gentle free exercise class. Class focus is on improved breathing awareness and balance from simple exercises done from a chair, as well as walking, and selective use of balance balls. Music and social interaction enhance this gathering, allowing participants to enjoy themselves while they gently work out.

Qigong / Wild Goose Wednesdays, 5:30 - 7:00 pm Qigong is a very old practice from China, similar to Tai Chi, which uses simple, natural movements to reduce the effects of stress, support the immune system, and improve balance, focus and memory. This beginner’s class for all ages and abilities combines qigong, Brain Gym, and some basic warm-ups/stretching.

Silver Sneakers Cardio Fit

Increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance in this Silver Sneakers standing circuit workout. Fitness and fun come together as you alternate non-impact aerobic choreography with upper-body strengthening exercises using hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a Silver Sneakers ball. A chair is offered for support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

Meditation 101 Thursdays, 1:00 – 2:00pm This meditation class is simple and easy to do. The class will be done in chairs. This six week class starts August 4th. The instructor is Joseph Armenio.

Silver Sneakers Classic Tuesdays, 9:30am & Thursdays, at 11:15am Silver Sneakers is a one hour class designed especially for the 60+ crowd who wish for a moderate-paced class. This fun fitness program will help maintain and improve cardiovascular conditioning, circulation, flexibility, and muscle tone. All instructors have been certified in the Silver Sneakers program and hold a group fitness instructor certificate.

Movement for Improvement Thursdays, 10:00 – 11:00 am This is an energizing chair based dance class that improves flexibility, strength and overall coordination. Although originally designed for those with Parkinson’s, this class can benefit anyone.

This class is taught by Jenica Herndon who is also a certified Tai Chi Instructor.

Silver Sneakers Circuit Wednesday, 10:45 - 11:45 am & Saturday, 10:00 - 11:00 am Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upperbody strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a Silver Sneakers ball is alternated with low-impact aerobics choreography. A chair is used for standing support, stretching and relaxation exercises. Certified Instructor Mary Andersen.

Silver Sneakers Yoga Mondays, 9:30 am Silver Sneakers yoga accommodates persons who can’t get up and down easily from the floor. This style of yoga can be a very complete workout that increases flexibility and strength, while incorporating breathing techniques that are both energizing and calming. Group leader Michelle Annette has been certified by Silver Sneakers and holds a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer certification.

Yoga, Hatha - Gentle Tuesdays, 11:45 – 12:45 pm This is a slow and gentle yoga class that will soothe and relax you like nothing else. Unlike the power yoga classes, this class moves slowly through the poses, and holds them for longer lengths of time so you can soak in and reap the full benefits of each posture. This class is still dynamic and will stretch and lengthen every muscle in your body from your head to your toes, but it will do so in a gentle, soothing, and relaxing way.

SOCIAL GROUPS Meeting People & Having Fun The City of Newport is “The friendliest.“ The 60+ Activity Center offers the chance to join existing social groups. Every occasion here at the center is an opportunity to get social. People have gained lifelong friendships from attending one or more of our activities. Most of our social groups are FREE.

Tai Chi Monday, 12:30 - 1:15 pm This class is led by Athena Crichton. Everyone welcome! The group will practice warms ups and some simple Tai Chi moves. This is an 8 form movement of Tai Chi. Pictured are newly certified instructors Kelly Ardinger, Athena Crichton and Alice McNamara.

Wii Bowling Tuesdays, 9:30 - 10:30 am Have some fun at the 60+ Center; see the multipurpose room transform into a three-lane bowling alley! These games are a good way to improve your senses, visually and physically.

Bingo Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 11:00 - 11:45 am Donation to play.

Bunco 3rd Thursday of each month, 1:00 - 3:00 pm Donation to play. This game is primarily an excuse to get together with others who want to laugh and forget themselves while they play this simple game of tossing dice and counting scores. The laughter is so loud in our social lounge where the players are whooping and hollering that the office has to close the door to get any work done. Come and have some “mindless” fun with this funloving group.
