The annual e vent will star t Nov. 2 with a turke y dinner s er ved buf fet sty le at 5 p.m. in the St. Mar y’s cafeteria. The dinner will

b e $14 for adults and $7 for children b etween the ages of six and 12. Children f ive and under can eat for f ree.

After wards, the ac tion will move to the g ymnasium at the Dakota Women’s C orrectional Rehabilitation C enter. The g ymnasium will b e op ening at 6 p.m. for the midway with games and bingo, silent auc tions, baked go o d and fo o d available. Bingo will b e star ting at 6:30 p.m. and continuing until 9 p.m. There will als o b e a guaranteed blackout at 8 p.m. with $500 lined up.

CDBG funds are intended to provide decent housing, suitable living environments and economic opportunities, principally for very low-and low-income persons through rehabilitation and preservation, economic/job development and public facilities improvements.

The application being considered would request $37,192.00 for the City of Mott Rural Housing. It is estimated that approximately 100% of the funds would benefit very low-and low-income persons. Briefs Christmas in New England returns in mid-November The New England Community Choir will be performing in the Christmas in New England VI event at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in mid-November.

The event will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 15 and 16, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m.

In addition, there will be a Living Nativity, the Children’s Choir, Cinco-pation, guests soloists and the DSU Chamber Singers.

can see his accident reenacted. Another ghost is of an older man who hung himself in the attic, which is blocked off, but people believe that a cold draft by the door is evidence of his presence. It’s also been reported that candy jars have had their contents moved without leaving fingerprints. The third ghost is that of a little girl who can sometimes be seen looking out of the window.

The Liberty Memorial Building, on the grounds of the North Dakota State Capitol, is said to be haunted by a ghost known as the “Stack Monster.� The state historical society used to be located in the building, in which thousands of Indian and pioneer artifacts, skeletons and old books were stored and displayed; it’s thought that one of the items had a ghost attached. It’s reported that voices, feelings of dread, unexplained shadows and footsteps affected workers there for years.

The Memory Gardens Cemetery east of Val-

ley City has a floating orb known as the Blue Boy, and a cemetery near the State Hospital in Jamestown has spawned stories of rattling gates, unexplained footsteps and sensations of being grabbed.

In a tunnel that connects UND’s dining hall to five dorms, there have been several sightings of the ghost of a girl with short dark hair. It’s said that in 1988, three students saw her and described her as about five feet five and wearing a nightshirt. The apparition has been linked to the tragic death of a young woman who froze to death in 1962 when she was on her way to the dining hall in the middle of the night. It’s believed she slipped on the ice – this being before the tunnels were built.

One story is said to have been featured on Unsolved Mysteries concerning a glowing cross that can be seen at night in an empty church near Absaraka. Be forewarned, the locals aren’t happy to have curious folks

poking around their community at night – which is understandable. But those who have managed to see the image describe a glowing cross that hovers in mid-air within the sanctuary, and that no matter what angle you view it from, it’s always a front-on view. The cross cannot be seen from inside the church, only by looking through the windows, which are by some accounts boarded up... or not. The locals have explained that the cross is nothing more than the result of light passing through a special feature in the window glass; but that’s not much fun.

Dakota Datebook State Mill and Elevator written by Merry Helm October 30, 2019 — On this date in 1922, Governor Rangvold Nestos pushed a button that officially started the machinery of the soonto-be-completed North Dakota Mill and Elevator in downtown Grand Forks. To this day, it is still the only state-owned elevator in the nation.

Prior to the building of the mill, North Dakota farmers had been at the mercy of the grain exchange and flourmills in Minneapolis; the grain had to be shipped by train, and by the time all costs were deducted, farmers barely broke even. Adding insult to injury, the flour that was shipped back to the state from these mills was over-priced, but consumers had few alternatives.

The choice to fight the Eastern monopoly by building a state-owned facility became the answer, but it was easier said than done.

During the early 1900s, North Dakota farmers were largely ignored by politicians and were even told to go home and slop the hogs when they brought their problems to the state legislature. Angered and frustrated, farmers began banding together, eventually forming a groundbreaking political group called the Non-Partisan League.

The NPL was formed in 1915 and included pro-

gressives, reformers, and radicals behind a platform calling for sweeping progressive reforms.

Their vision included improved regulation of public services and corporation, voting rights for women, improved educational services and development of health care agencies. At the heart of the NPL’s agenda, there was also a desire to form state-owned banks, mills and elevators, and insurances.

Because this vision ran contrary to the interests of big business, the NPL faced an uphill battle from the start; the notion of people taking charge of their own financial destinies generated fierce opposition. Money started pouring in from out-of-state corporations and, using everything from lawsuits to extreme propaganda, special interest groups used every means possible to block the NPL program.

The time came, however, when the NPL became powerful enough to place a governor in office and take charge of the legislature. The State Bank of North Dakota, a state-owned hail insurance company, and the North Dakota Mill and Elevator soon became realities.

The North Dakota Mill now include five milling units, a terminal elevator and a warehouse for bagging and shipping seed and flour. As the NPL foresaw, the facility has paid for itself from its own operating profits, and is now capable of adding value to 16

million bushels of wheat each year. Up to 4.2 million bushels of grain can be stored in the terminal elevator, which also provides wheat storage to farmers and rural elevators.

The milling units operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the flour is used by countless food manufacturers and retailers. The best part is that more than 90% of the customers are from out-of-state.

Members of the now defunct NPL would be overjoyed to witness the tide they turned. Because of their radical ideas, money generated from the state’s wheat farms now flows into the state rather than out. Â

Legends have been floating around for years of the “Kindred Lights,� the “Grim Reaper� in a Baptist church near Fredonia, the “Fatal Stump� near Belfield, and the “Gas Chamber� on the deserted Oss farmstead near Hatton.

A Minot legend contends that three different ghosts haunt a four-story house that was later turned into a gift shop. The first is of a man who drowned in the river that runs behind the house, and at 4:39 a.m., it’s believed one
