Manzanita’s quintessential annual Fourth of July parade was again a crowd pleaser and the parade, according to Manzanita City Manager Jerry Taylor, who also chairs the Parade Committee, was the largest in years, perhaps ever. “We had 129 entries this year; 15 more than last year,” Taylor told the Citizen. “All in all, everything went smoothly.” Prior to the parade, Harold Schild, of Tillamook, flew his airplane over Laneda Ave. in a flyover reminiscent of those in the past. Though Schild’s private plane maybe wasn’t as exciting or noisy a fighter jet or military transport, the thought was there and the crowd that lined up to view the parade was appreciative. “He (Schild) said, ‘I made as much noise as I could,’” Taylor noted. The weather was perfect for the traditional Independence Day celebration, capped off with a fireworks display on the beach later in the evening. Typically advertised as an approximate 20-minute show, this year’s fireworks display, conducted by licensed pyrotechnicians from Western Display Fireworks in Canby, last 38 minutes. Though there were reports of people with illegal fireworks, some of which were clearly visible on the beach, Taylor noted that the number of reports were about the same as previous years. From his perspective, Manzanita Public Safety Department Chief Eric Harth told his boss, “It was a very calm Fourth of July when you think of all the people that were here.” If you enjoyed the fireworks show and would like to help out financially for this year’s show and future shows, the Manzanita Fireworks Committee will gladly accept your donation, which can be mailed to the Manzanita Fireworks Committee at P.O. Box 802, Manzanita, OR 97130. The committee is a private, non-profit effort. No city funds are spent on the display.

In quest of a community library

With the library built and operational by the summer of 1987, focus turns to financial stability Part 3 of a 3 part series

The Manzanita Branch of the Tillamook County Library system was dedicated on July 18, 1987. The books, personnel, and library policies are the responsibilities of the Tillamook County Library. The North Tillamook Library Board retains custody and ownership of the building. The North Tillamook Library Friends bear the financial responsibility for building maintenance. Friends also can furnish volunteers from time to time. The contract was negotiated and signed in 1987 and resigned in 1994. With the building built and in operation, the attention of the North Tillamook Library Board turned to guaranteeing the financial stability for the maintenance of the building. A campaign was started to raise money with a target of $50,000. That amount of money earning about 7 percent interest would cover the yearly expenses. Again, Pauline Reed gave a nest egg and donations from all over the country came in from property owners and supporters. At that point the decision was made to concentrate on the book sale and copier

Upwards of 130 people gathered at White Clover Grange near Mohler to extend best wishes to the retiring Jan Hamilton, CARTM’s executive director the past six years. Prior to taking over the top post in the summer of 2008, Hamilton was assistant director to Rich Felley for two years at CARTM Recycling. “My plan is to spend a lot of time walking on the beach, playing music and just relaxing the first six months to a year,” said Hamilton of her retirement plans. “From there, I’ll decide what I’m going to do. One thing I want

to do is spend more time connecting with people and this beautiful area. Being retired will give me a better opportunity to do that…this is a fabulous community.” Said CARTM board chair Karen Reddick-Yurka at the retirement get-together for Hamilton, “Jan was the right person for the job at the right time,” and she will greatly missed. As a going away present, Hamilton was presented with a handmade community quilt, each square made by a different person with its own particular story. In the meantime, the search for Hamilton’s replacement ended with the selection of Reddick-Yurka as director at a meeting of the board of directors on July 1. No longer a member of the board, as a result of her new assignment, Reddick-Yurka was replaced by board member Linda Kozlowski as chair.

monies as revenue sources. The investment accounts are still active, with the idea that this account will be kept for future expansion needs and capital improvements. The library presently is paying its operating expenses through the book sales, copier receipts, donations and magazine sales. There is concern that the income from the annual book sale will diminish as electronic devices are used, but thus far, the sale is continuing to be very popular. Friends are aware that new sources of revenue will need to be tapped in the future. In 2006, the recently formed Hoffman Center made overtures to the North Tillamook Library Board to combine the two organizations into a single community cultural center or to use the library property to support the center’s activities. Many were concerned that this could result in a de-emphasis of the mission of the library and that the loss of property and investments could limit its possible expansion to meet future needs. After several meetings and a good amount of newsprint coverage, the library board decided that what the Hoffman Center was proposing was not com-
