Get ready for minor delays on US 101, and even a three-day highway closure at Neahkahnie Mountain, this spring as the Oregon Department of Transportation puts your tax dollars to work. Repairs are underway on the Neahkahnie Mountain rock wall on US 101. The project consists of repairing a 300-foot section of the rock wall built in the early 1940s along the south-

Manzanita’s Got Talent! The Hoffman Center in Manzanita hosted a Community Talent Showcase this past Saturday featuring a variety of acts put on by local citizens of the Nehalem Bay area. It was a packed house on a rainy evening for the fifth such fundraising event that helps support the center’s general operating fund. Following an audition, 13 acts were selected, mostly musical with a surprise here and there thrown in for good measure. “This is an opportunity for the talented people in our area to show off their skills,” said Hoffman Center president Dave Dillon. “We’ve had all kinds of acts.”
Even Dillon, who served as MC for the event, and his wife, Lori, got into the act with a sing-a-long that brought to a close the two-hour show.

When owner/chef Lee Vance said she planned open her new Manzanita restaurant by mid-February, few believed her. Last October, when the Citizen ran a story on her plans, the building that would house the restauLee Vance rant at the corner of Fifth and Laneda was under construction. While the exterior was taking shape, it was hard to imagine what a restaurant might look like inside. However, true to her word, the brand spanking new restaurant, Blackbird, opened on Valentine’s Day. As one would expect, the restaurant was packed that evening and since then, according to Vance, it has been pretty well booked. “That’s been nice,” said Vance, who admits to having a few butterflies opening on such a special day. “We were inspected the day before and began taking deliveries of product. I’m proud of what we have accomplished so far,” she said in giving a tip of her hat to her eleven employees. Featuring an open kitchen, there’s no place to hide. Patrons sitting at the bar have a birds-eye view of everything that transpires. There is no behind the scenes. “What you see, is what you get,” said Vance, who wanted the operation to be as transparent as possible. “We’re on stage at all times and very visible.” The farm-to-table eatery traces its beginnings to the

It is anticipated both bills will receive Senate and House support and be signed by Governor Kitzhaber. The first bill is SB 1514. It redistributes the current RV registration fees to gives counties a greater share of the RV revenue. There are no RV fee increases built into the bill. Counties have about half the campsites in the state and state parks has the other half. RV fees are currently distributed at 65
