Classic comedy ‘Odd Couple’ comes to Oregon Coast G

Eye on Expansion...

et ready for Neil Simon’s bestknown comedy “The Odd Couple,” which will appear on the North Oregon Coast the last three weekends of April. The Riverbend Players are performing this classic comedy, directed by Betsy McMahon, in the newly-remodeled NCRD Theater in Nehalem. Come and enjoy the two mismatched buddies, Oscar and Felix, at their best!

Oscar, played by Brian McMahon and Felix, played by Mike Sims, are both aggressively irritating, pushing their own neuroses and obsessions out into the world, with a disregard for people around them. Their card-playing buddies add zingers and crazy comedy antics to the production: Michael Sommers as Roy, Mike Scott as Speed, Jeff Slamal as Murray and Michael Dinan as Vinnie. With the entrance of the Pigeon sisters, the comedy lifts to joyous heights. Sedona Torres plays Gwendolyn and Sue Jelineo plays Cecily, portraying the perfectly daft, giggly, good-time girls who lend a sense of lightness to Oscar and Felix’s bickering. This production of “The Odd Couple” reflects more than just a barrage of one-liners or a superficial, slap-happy exercise in joke recital. Neil Simon’s

Bread and Ocean Bakery owner talks growth plan By Brad Mosher bmosher@countrymedia.net

T

he Bread and Ocean Bakery in Manzanita is getting a makeover and growing larger at the same time. He already has added room for 36 more customers inside, and counting the original seating and what is available outside on the patio during

good weather, it has expanded the restaurant capacity to more than 60 people. There will also be seating in the fullservice bar area, which would bring the total seating in the business to approximately 74 people. When the bakery changed owners recently, the new owners made note of what they considered to be needed

improvements, including alleviating a bottleneck by the cash register. “Our business was so brisk, the line would be from the cash register back to the door – and some days beyond (the door), said owner George Reddish Monday. “It was

NKN and Community Track and Field renovation In a letter, Neah-Kah-Nie School District Superintendent Paul Erlebach discusses the proposal of upgrading the high school track. The proposed plans range in cost from $1.4 million to $3.6 million.

W

e are in the early planning stages to replace and upgrade the track at the high school. This is a project that we knew we would eventually be doing and is now at the point of necessity. While the existing rubberized surface is about 30 yrs old, the subsurface dates back to the 1960’s. The subsurface is failing and beginning to crack in several places around the track. The rubberized top surface has been worn thin and in places is now starting to blister due to water seeping through those subsurface cracks. In addition to the track’s age and condition we have an antiquated drainage system that will no longer keep up with the winter rains. There have been rain events this winter that have flooded the east end of the field and track with as much as 2ft of water. This needs to be addressed and the best time to upgrade is during construction of the new track. The runways for the long jump, triple jump and pole vault are worn away to the point that we have to roll out temporary rubber runways to hold a meet. We have no runway for javelin and they are being thrown from a grass surface that is generally slick from moisture in the spring. The high jump has rubber mats glued to an asphalt base and they tend to roll up at the edges. The field lights are inadequate and have been for many years now. Originally each pole was equipped with 4-1500 watt lamps. We now have 2-1500 watt fixtures on
