ADULT PROGRAMS SUMMER 2016 Classes
Cathy Neuschafer: Learn to Move Your Body Better Your body responds to how you use it 100% of the time. How you stand, sit, walk – every load you experience. So your body is essentially the sum total of the habits, patterns and compensations you have created up to this time. Do your knees ache, feet pointing out to the side, back pain, weak hips, hyperkyphosis? How you move (or don’t move) has taught your joints, muscles and tissues to react and adapt to that shape. It’s time to RE-adapt your body to optimal health through restorative exercise. You will learn to recognize your own poor movement patterns and habits and use corrective exercises to coax a new shape out of your body with movement patterns that are more “nutritious”. Based on the teachings of Master Biomechanist, Katy Bowman, alignment recognizes there is an orientation and appropriate range of motion to be found in every part of the body that minimizes damages and promotes longevity of your parts. Alignment science considers how particular body positions change the various loads and forces generated within the body, causing wear and tear on your tissues. What your body craves and needs is natural, reflex-driven movement using your full range of motion and with all your muscles participating. Movement is critical to the health of your human machine and correct alignment is critical to pain-free movement.”
“Cathy’s classes are a blast!
“30 Minutes to Fit”
sparkling, fun and effective
A short, fun movement class in the morning that gets you going and uses whole body movement, body weight training, light weights and various movement modalities to get you going in the am. students really “get it.” Her
Ongoing classes are held 4 – 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoons in the Yoga Room. The goal of this class is to develop a supple and stable body with specific exercises to regain natural alignment, innervate the musculature of the entire body, and increase range of motion, functionality and balance. Your body wants to move, it’s made to move. However, cultural habits, chronic positions and lack of whole body movement cause actual changes in your tissues that result in injuries and joint degeneration. Each week a different area of the body is the focus to increase strength, turn on muscles you probably haven’t used in years, and restore optimal joint range of motion. Correcting poor movement habits, getting all your parts to work together correctly, and incorporating more muscles in everything you do is critical to functional longevity. Cathy provides a supportive, fun environment with your health in mind.
She is incredibly knowledgeable about the body and has a

ADULT PROGRAMS “Healthy Feet” Class – Healthy Moving Starts with the Feet To a large extent, your feet direct the health of the rest of your body. The shoes you wear, the way you walk, (or don’t walk), your movement habits- all affect the mechanics of your movement. This class will make you aware of how your habits have shaped your body and. Then we focus on corrective exercises designed to help restore movement, strength and healthy tissue in the feet and lower body. The goal of the 4-week class is to teach you move your body better and undo movement habits that have contributed to pain and injuries. You will also learn proper walking mechanics to develop stronger glutes (your walking muscles) and fire up long unused muscles in the lateral hips, rotators and entire posterior chain. What happens at your feet affects your whole body. Learn to move your body better – start with your feet.
Starts: June 8 Days: Wednesdays Time: 4 – 5 p.m. in the Yoga Room Cost: $40 for the entire four-week series
“Introduction to Alignment” A FREE workshop held one Saturday each month to introduce students to this growing fitness movement and answer questions. Your body is made to move, your body wants to move. But we are moving less and less as a society. We have created bodies that no longer move with natural reflex driven mechanics, resulting in fewer muscles used, weak joints, and repetitive damage from poor movement habits and cultural input. If you are curious about why you have pain and degenerating parts, come to the FREE, introductory class. You will thoroughly enjoy the experience and leave with a lot of great information and some exercises to help you get started on your journey back to optimal health. This class is recommended prior to joining the “Alignment Balance and Strength” class.
Dates: June 11 Time: 10 – 11 a.m. Location: Yoga room in the Community Center Cost: FREE
“Amazing! After living with
a painful right shoulder and numbness in that arm for 5 years I finally had relief, what a surprise. I had visited doctors and chiropractors and had resigned myself to living with this problem when I saw a poster for a Balance and Strength class at the community Center. It sounded interesting and I began to attend once a week. Some of the exercises were for opening and strengthening the joints including the shoulders. After a few months and some hard work, including at home exercise, I couldn’t believe how much better my arm was and today it is completely better. I owe it to Cathy Neuschafer and her Restorative Exercise class.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS GUIDE The City of Lincoln City is continually improving our ability to respond to and recover from natural disasters. What can you do to help us help you? Your responsibility is to prepare yourself and your family to survive until the City can respond. Take the time to learn about the hazards we face along the coast and elsewhere (places where you may travel). Prepare yourself and your family by creating a plan along with emergency “Go Kits” and “Stay Kits.” Some of the hazards you will face at some time along the Coast are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Damaging wind storms Flooding Fires (home, forest or urban) Landslides Earthquakes and tsunamis Power outages caused by any or all of the above
Your plan should include all of the hazards listed above; plan for sheltering in place or evacuating to a shelter. Remember to plan for your pets also, and sign up for Everbridge Citizen Alert notification at http:// www.lincolncountysheriff.net/ Your plan should address the following items: • Who is your family emergency contact? (out of area or out of state) • Where should your family meet? • How will you contact each other?
• There are two types of tsunamis and warnings: distant and local. Sirens will sound a warning for a distant tsunami, and an earthquake lasting several minutes will be the warning for a local tsunami (remember to Drop, Cover and Hold until the shaking stops.) • Have enough water, food and medications for your family and pets. You should plan for at least a week supply. Have a battery operated or hand crank emergency radio with USB port for charging cell phones, as well as a NOAA weather alert radio. Tune to local radio station KBCH 1400 AM or Newport KYTE 102.7 FM. • Keep your gas tank at least half full and an emergency kit in your vehicle. • Have a “Go Kit” at home and work, and a “Stay Kit” for sheltering in place.
• What about your pets? • When should you turn off the utilities? • Know where you live and work in regards to the updated tsunami inundation maps. They can be found at City Hall, the Community Center, Driftwood Public Library, Chamber of Commerce or the Cultural Center.
For more information on how to create your plan or to build your “kits” contact Mark Nicholson, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator at 541-5571127 and follow us on our Facebook page: Lincoln City Emergency Preparedness and Outreach or on Twitter @CofLCEMOutreach
