rides, rodeos, exhibits, and nightly entertainment. n Fallon County Recreation Department is committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents of the Baker area through development and promotion of recreation and enrichment opportunities, providing support to and encouraging use of community parks and facilities.

It is stocked with black crappie, northern pike, smallmouth bass, walleye, and yellow perch. The Tom McGonigal Memorial Kids Fishing Day is held at the reservoir every June.

Excitement building for 2015 Fallon County Fair

By Lori Kesinger Fallon County Times Another big weekend of thrill seeking fun and excitement is planned for the 2015 Fallon County Fair in Baker, Montana.

This five day event, Wednesday through Sunday, August 19-23, will feature exhibits, livestock, a parade, carnival rides, free daily entertainment, commercial displays, food vendors, a demolition derby, rodeos, and nightly entertainment.

Horse and trail classes will kick off the fair Wednesday morning followed by llamas and alpacas. The goat trail and cat and dog shows will be held in the afternoon.

Livestock judging will continue Thursday and Friday with the 4-H/FFA Market Beef Show Friday evening.

Open Class Trailer Shows will be Saturday morning with the 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Family friendly amusements will be provided by Funtime Carnival Thursday through Sunday. A variety of whirling rides, challenging games, and carnival food will be offered on the midway.

Freestyle Motocross will get the entertainment off to a fast, fun start Thursday evening. Highly skilled riders will perform electrifying stunts during the family-oriented show. Crowd participation is the riders’ favorite part of the show.

Two-Way Crossing, a

Loverboy pop-country duo and their band, will heat up the stage Friday evening. Blake and Jenny Marvin are the married duo behind the vocals.

Their recent single “Deep End” has been rising up the music charts and their stage show is full of magnetic energy.

Dust off your hats and pull on your boots for PRCA rodeo action on the weekend.

The roughstock, cowboys and cowgirls will have two rodeo performances. Saturday’s rodeo is “Wrangler Day” and Sunday “Tough Enough to Wear Pink”, both

days will be full of tough and exciting competition.

Leather pants and classic high-energy 80s music, the band Loverboy will bring their legacy sound for a onenight concert Saturday, Aug. 22. Canadian rock band Loverboy entered the music scene in 1980 with their self-titled debut album.

They rapidly became one of America’s most popular rock bands, selling more than ten million albums throughout their musical career.

Loverboy accumulated four multi-Platinum albums and numerous international

Gold albums from 1980 to 1987. Their tours sold out arenas and stadiums nationwide. Their hit singles include “Working for the Weekend”, “Lovin’ Every Minute of It”, “This Could Be the Night”, “Hot Girls in Love”, “Heaven In Your Eyes”, “Turn Me Loose”, “When It’s Over”, and “Queen of the Broken Hearts”. They released their newest album “Unfinished Business” last year.

Loverboy still includes original members Mike Reno vocals, Paul Dean on guitars, Doug Johnson on keyboards, and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve (a former member of Dean and Frenette’s pre-Loverboy band Streetheart), who replaced the late Scott Smith on bass.

Montana’s own Copper Mountain Band is a high-energy country music group with a passion for their craft. They have performed for a wide range of venues including backing Nashville solo artists and opening major headliners. The Copper Mountain Band will perform on the Patio after the motocross event Thursday night, after Two Way Crossing on Friday and after Loverboy on Saturday.

Free daily entertainment will include the new attraction Young Guns Wild West Fun Park, an interactive play zone designed especially for children ten and under. The activities are geared towards younger children because they often don’t meet

Pippi the Clown will return brightly dressed in her clown best with her cart full of surprises. Pippi (Jeanne Thomas), based out of Red Lodge, Montana, has toured the world but is thrilled to be a part of the local fairs and festivals. She is an accomplished balloon artist and incredible face painter and brings great joy to children.

The Free Stage will spotlight some remarkable talent Friday through Sunday including The Doo-Wah Riders, Loop Rawlins One Man Wild West Show, Jeff Martin Comedy Magic, and Powerhouse Dance.

The Doo-Wah Riders are a country band with a unique, original sound defined as “high energy country with a cajun twist”. For over 35 years they have been performing like no one else does. Their powerful arrangements of classic and original songs have made them favorites everywhere they go.

As seen on America’s Got Talent, Loop Rawlins One Man Wild West Show is traditional entertainment no one will want to miss. Rawlins is one of the most versatile western performers in the world today. His show

features trick roping, whip cracking, and fancy gun spinning.

Jeff Martin will make all ages of people laugh and marvel at the wonders of comedy magic. “The blond curly-haired magician”, as describes his physical attributes, will provide an entertaining production of professional magic and antics.

Powerhouse Dance will appeal to all age groups.

Powerhouse combines innovative tap, clogging, and explosive stomp for a one-of-a-kind dance experience, also known as percussive dance. The performers also do more than simply dance.

They entertain throughout the show by engaging the crowd with their energy and talent.

Added to all of the events and excitement will be an opportunity to meet new and old friends, so come celebrate the Fallon County Fair in August with world class entertainment and family oriented fun. There is something for everyone!

An old time economy grocery store sits south of the main building at the O’Fallon Museum in Baker, Mont.

Step back in time at O’Fallon Museum

O’Fallon Museum is a popular stop for visitors to Baker, Mont. Six buildings comprise the museum which houses a wealth of artifacts guaranteed to please. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, O’Fallon Museum’s main building first served as the Fallon County jail. The first floor was designed to provide living quarters for the sheriff and his family. The jail cells were located on the second floor. Matt Jones was the first sheriff to live in the house in 1916 with all the succeeding sheriffs and their families residing there until 1974.

Currently located on the

first floor of the old jail is Steer Montana, the world’s largest steer. The animal was a roan polled shorthorn born east of Baker on March 23, 1923. It lived 15 years and 4 months. The certified size of the steer was 3,980 pounds, 5’11” tall with a length of 10’4” and a girth of 9’2”. It is said the steer topped out at an uncertified weight of 4,290 pounds.

Located on the first floor is a gift shop, an old time kitchen, photography room, laundry room, Christmas/ kids room, drug store with old time merchandise and equipment, an old time beauty parlor and the curator’s office.

On the second floor of the main building is a ladies’ dress shop which features clothing dating as early as the 19th century, a 1920s or earlier parlor, a room filled with WWI and WWII artifacts, and several showcases filled with interesting memorabilia.

To the north of the old jail is the Lambert House. It was built in 1907 and consists of two rooms which housed a family of eleven. Also in that location is the Forrest Duffield house, a private museum which is a replica of Forrest Duffield’s parents’ home when they homesteaded east of Baker in 1910. It houses the original

furnishings of the Duffields, including an old Majestic cook stove, dishes, kerosene lamps, a treadle sewing machine and handmade rugs.

To the south of the main building is the Block Building. This building houses a doctor, dentist and eye doctor corner; an old time economy grocery store, barber shop, saddle and tack corner, post office, Indian artifacts, hardware items, dinosaur bones, milking items - churns, separators and milking machines and various other items.

Across Main Street is a metal building which houses antique machinery, cars, tractors and buggies. In-

cluded in the display items are a John Deere D - 1928 tractor, plow and seeder, 1944 John Deere B tractor, 2236 McCormick-Deering tractor, two threshing machines - a wooden yellow Fellow patented in 1886 and a 1928 metal thresher, 1928 Chevy truck, 1962 Ford Econoline pickup, 1950 Packard, 1929 Model A Ford, 1931 Model A Ford, 1962 Corvair, 1928 Graham Brothers fire truck, 1920s horse-drawn doctor’s buggy, an all wooden windmill from the late 1800s, blacksmith tools, statues and pictures.

In front of the metal building is an interesting display which includes items made by Herb Jundt. There is a large wheat sculpture, outline of the state of Montana showing Baker Lake, an oilwell and various wildlife

animals, an oil well pump donated by Little Beaver Soil Conservation Service, display of oilfield tools including a dresser wrench, jet bit and tamper screw, and a horse weathervane above a sculpture of Mount Rushmore.

Just north of the metal building is the old Willard School, the museum’s latest acquisition. The school was located about 13 miles south of Baker and is a fine example of the country schools that dotted the landscape from the early 1900s to the 1960s. Willard School was in session from 1917 to 1967.

baux’s restored office/residence, built in 1892 and view antiques that belonged to Pierre and his wife May Ellen(Cooper) as well as items from other early day area settlers. Wibaux used his office/residence in the town that would bear his name as a base to run herds of as many as 65,000 cattle on the plains of Eastern Montana.

A livery stable with a show shop, grocery store, Rumely Tractor and other early equipment are also part of the museum complex. The

county’s first indoor bathroom has been completely reassembled inside a 1900’s era barber shop that sits on the museum grounds. Another interesting attraction at the museum is a rail car, now housing local artifacts, that comes from the 196465 Montana Centennial train that spent two years at the World’s Fair in New York.

The Pierre Wibaux Museum Complex is located on East Orgain Avenue in Wibaux. The museum is open May through September.

Don’t let your visit end at the museum. Historical attractions in Wibaux include the statue of Pierre Wibaux located several blocks west of the museum. It depicts Pierre in western garb looking north toward his ranch.

Pierre’s ashes are buried beneath the statue.

On your way to the statue, take time to examine St. Peter’s Church, built by Wibaux. A guided tour of the renovations can be arranged as well. Erected in 1885, St. Peter’s Catholic Church is a favorite attraction with its native rock and clinging ivy.

2015 Wibaux County Fair Schedule The Wibaux County Fair is held the fourth weekend in August. This four-day event features a night show on Friday evening, a NRA/NWRA/NRCA Rodeo Saturday evening, and a Demolition Derby/Bump-N-Run on Sunday afternoon.

Other events throughout the fair include 4-H and open class indoor exhibits, livestock exhibits, food vendors, climbing wall, inflatable games, stick horse rodeo, and a barbeque for a buck. A world of pillars and tunnels

Theodore Roosevelt said Medicine Rocks was “as fantastically beautiful a place as I have ever seen.”

Medicine Rocks State Park is located about 25 miles west-southwest of Baker, Mont., and 11 miles north of Ekalaka, Mont.

The park is named for the "Medicine Rocks," a series of sandstone pillars similar to hoodoos some 60 to 80 feet high with eerie undulations, holes, and tunnels in them.

The rocks contain numerous examples of Native American rock art, and are considered a sacred holy place by Plains Indians. Archeological evidence indicates that there has been human habitation at or near Medicine Rocks for about 11,000 years. Aside from the other-worldly nature of the rock formations, Native Americans were attracted to the site because of the many medicinal plants which grew there and the fossil seashells which could be gathered for decorations.

By Sonja Biberstine The Little Missouri River cut and interesting path through the plains of Western North Dakota. These jagged ridges only look hard and unwelcoming. They are really made from loose clay and sand stones that water has shifted over time. The different colors represent different stages of erosion and the environment at each of those times.

At an over look along the Scenic Byway on Highway 22 just north of Killdeer, you’ll find the remains of the “Lost Bridge”, originally constructed in 1931.

And off Exit 32 on I-94 is Painted Canyon Visitor Center, part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. From the lookout you can see miles and miles of the Badlands, read about their history, and even hike a mile loop through them.

As Theodore Roosevelt’s ‘home away from home,’ western North Dakota influenced his ideals and led him to establish vital policy as president When Theodore Roosevelt came to Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883, he was a skinny, young, spectacled dude from New York. He could not have imagined how his adventure in this remote and unfamiliar place would forever alter the course of the nation.

The rugged landscape and strenuous life that TR experienced here would help shape a conservation policy that we still benefit from today.

Watch some of the state’s biggest rodeos, races One of the largest barrel races in the country returns each April to the Bowman County Fairgrounds.

Organized by a local couple, the Triple Turn Classic barrel race has grown—heading into its 10th year in 2016—every year.

Before they can go to nationals, North Dakota high school cowboys and cowgirls have to compete in Bowman. But for some, Bowman is the end of the line.

Bowman has the unique distinction of being host to the North Dakota State High School Rodeo Finals each year, bringing hundreds of riders and ropers to Bowman for a week-long competition every June.

Held at the Bowman County Fairgrounds, the high school finals bring people from virtually everywhere in the state to experience Bowman County’s hospitality and features of its community.

In August, the professionals get to take a seat on the saddle for the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) Rodeo in Bowman.

A museum to envy

By Bryce Martin Bowman County Pioneer The Pioneer Trails Regional Museum in Bowman undoubtedly is a treasure for the area.

Its long-standing voyage into all things historical brings information and adventure to those who experience its many halls and exhibits.

It’s an upscale attraction for the smaller county of Bowman, and continues to grow with each passing year.

“As you walk through, you can get everything from dinosaurs to homesteaders to sod huts. It’s an enormous amount of things to learn,” PTRM Manager Lori Nohner said.

“If you’re at all interested in any sort of history or the sciences, this is definitely the place to come and look.

PTRM is unique for numerous reasons, but the most significant is that, for a rural area museum, it actively is looking for and researching history.

Other museums in rural North Dakota just put things on display, said Dean Pearson, president of the PTRM Board of Directors. “The state looks at PTRM as the way to run a small town museum,” Pearson said.

By Bryce Martin Bowman County Pioneer Each year the Bowman County Fair Board tries to reinvent itself from the previous year’s fair. The board brings live entertainment, food vendors, craft sales, and 4-H competitions.

Possessing an expansive network reaching every corner of the country, 4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization.

The Bowman County Fair is the biggest opportunity for the area youth involved in 4-H to show off their accomplishments.

4-H programs run

throughout the year, with year-long projects exhibited during the fair. 4-H enrollment numbers within Bowman County have remained strong and there are a lot of young children coming up

into the program.

For this year’s fair, Kat Perkins is coming home.

Perkins will headline the Bowman County Fair’s concert series on July 11.

Her concert at the Bow-

man County Fairgrounds, located on Highway 12 south of the city of Bowman, will mark one of the first times the songstress has performed in Bowman County since her time on NBC’s “The Voice” and the release of her hit single, “Fearless.”

Perkins was part of the Top 5 group of contestants last year on NBC’s singing competition show, “The Voice.” Since then she released a single, which made it onto the iTunes music charts, and has toured around the world, including making a surprise performance to the troops serving in the Middle East.

Bowman County is seeing many new businesses opening, including two much-anticipated restaurants to diversify local cuisine—Uptown Bar and Grill and Hibachi House Bar and Grill moved away from the previous business’s steakhouse atmosphere. Longland replaced the dark red tiling, red lighting fixtures and wall of burgundy drapes to give her restaurant a brighter, more family-oriented feel.

Longland started working in the food service industry when she was 16 years old in Rapid City. She worked overnight at a local truck stop, while she was raising her daughter.

Longland developed a marketing and business plan for her restaurant with the help of Laura Weber from the Small Business Development Center in Bowman, part of the Bowman County Development Corp.

With a staff of cooks— Rod Wisnat, Lonny Jonhson and Kathy Wyman—and

three servers who worked at Hawk’s Landing—Brooke Getz, Evie Miller and Katie Harrison—Longland forged ahead to get the building ready for its opening.

The difference that Uptown Bar & Grill brings to the area is its seven-daya-week service, opening at 5 a.m. They will run a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, with specials for all three meals Monday through Friday.

Drink and appetizer specials will be available on Sundays.

Uptown Bar & Grill will cater to mostly anybody with an appetite—serving the traditional burgers, sandwiches and dinners, with the addition of fish, wraps, pasta and steaks.

Longland described it as having an Applebee’s type of atmosphere and menu.

A real tooth from a Tyrannosaurus Rex discovered in Bowman County, N.D.

A 63-million-year-old skeleton of a hadrosaur was found three years ago on a massive stretch of private land in the Badlands north of Marmarth. It was discovered exclusively by the Pioneer Trails Regional Museum in Bowman, N.D. Prior years of painstaking digging led the group to find at the site the largest, most complete hadrosaur body ever discovered by the museum.

A hadrosaur, or duck-billed dinosaur, whose body, specifically of the hadrosaur found by the museum, reached up to 40 feet in length and could weigh over 10 tons.

by PTRM is called the Hell Creek Formation. The dinosaurs recovered by the museum there were from what’s called the Crustaceous Age’s late Maastrichtian period, or the very end of the time of dinosaurs.

During that time there existed ceratopsians, in the form of torosaurus and triceratops. Large theropods, such as the T-Rex, also lived during that time. And there was a multitude of small raptor-type dinosaurs, though nothing of the size that was depicted in “Jurassic Park.”

Prior to the Maastrichtian Age, there existed troodons and paronychodons, which were likely six feet tall.

The museum has collections of teeth or body parts from many in those ages.

The Triassic Age was the

period of time when dinosaurs first evolved, which was followed by the Jurassic Age and then the Cretaceous.

When the area of Bowman County was laid down, it was done so in a series of beds. The Hell Creek formation exists under the city of Bowman, but it’s 900 feet below the surface.

As the Rocky Mountains formed, they created wrinkles as they lifted. The easiest way to demonstrate those wrinkles is if a tablecloth is placed on a table, with hands on the tabletop, and it’s pushed – on the other side of the table is going to create a wrinkle, which is called an anticline.

There’s an anticline that runs from southeast of Buffalo, S.D. to about Glendive, Mont., which is where oil collects and is recovered.

When driving from Bowman to Marmarth on High-

way 12, a person is positioned at the surface of the formation.

As they drive along, they’re approaching older formations and ultimately the Hell Creek once they reach Marmarth. Then back out again on the other side.

Even though Rhame is topographically the highest elevated town in the state of North Dakota based on elevation, driving from Bowman to Marmarth is actually proceeding subsurface geologically due to the anticline. Because of this phenomenon, once in Marmarth, they would be 900-feet lower than Bowman.

“That’s why we have dinosaurs in Marmarth and not

in Bowman,” said Dean Pearson.

“If there was no anticline, Marmarth wouldn’t have had dinosaurs either.”

When the area was under a 500-foot deep ocean about 73 million years ago, the Peer Shale Formation was laid down.

If that formation is searched, a person would find marine items – such as clams, seashells and fish that lived there.

When the seaway retreated, as the Rocky Mountains lifted, it raised the water and formed beach sands.

After the beach sands left, the next thing that happened was the creation of the backwater marshes and swamps, which is was composes the Hell Creek Formation.

Dinosaurs existed there on dry land and in the swamps.

There a little bit for everyone in the tiny town of Medora. A cowboy’s paradise at the base of the entrance to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Biking the intimidating Maah Daah Hey Trail Several celebrations marked the completion of the 150-mile long Maah Daah Hey Trail last year.

Now it’s fully open and ready to take you on.

The trail stretches nearly 150 miles across four western North Dakota counties — Slope, Billings, Golden Valley and McKenzie.

The interconnected trails weave across the Little Missouri badlands for hikers, bikers and horseback riders to experience the biology and geology of the North Dakota badlands.

The original portion of the trail went from Sully Creek State Park northward to the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The dedication of that portion of the trail took place in 1999.

Now, 16 years later, the final leg of the trail from Sully Creek State Park south to the Burning Coal Vein in Amidon is ready for travel.

The trail has a by-pass route to Buffalo Creek Campground because bicycles are not allowed on

Little Missouri National Grasslands This is the largest and most diverse of the 19 grasslands in the western U.S. Watch for prairie dogs, eagle, falcon nests, elk, antelope, and mule deer.

This site is named for the fire smoldering in the coal layer several feet underground. Although the coal vein is no longer burning, the effects are still visible.

The site offers a scenic lookout of the Columnar Junipers and a short trail just south of the campground. This site also serves as the south trail head of the Maah Daah Hey Trail.

A Teddy Roosevelt salute to Medora and the national park

Did you know that the Teddy Bear was named after Theodore Roosevelt?

Theodore Roosevelt comes to life in this vivid and rousing presentation. Learn about Theodore Roosevelt as President, husband, father, soldier, hunter, and Badlands rancher. Roosevelt is portrayed by Joe Wiegand who performs this role nationally, including a White House appearance for President George W. Bush.

You may have recently seen Wiegand as Theodore Roosevelt in the History Channel’s, The Men Who Built America or in NFL Films, Centennial of the Forward Pass. TR will answer your questions at the end of the show. On occasion, Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Roosevelt will be portrayed

by Larry and Julia Marple, veteran educators and re-enactors from Ohio.

Performances take place daily at 3:30 p.m., from June 5 to Sept. 6, in the Old Town Hall Theater. The box office opens thirty minutes before each show. The Old Town Hall Theater is handicap accessible via a wheelchair lift.

Reaching North Dakota’s heights

White Butte is the highest natural point in North Dakota. At an elevation of 3,506 feet, it is a prominent butte in Slope County, in the Badlands of the southwestern part of the state. It is located three miles east of U.S. 85 and about 6.5 miles south of Amidon, the nearest town about seven miles to the northwest. The summit is located within the boundaries of the Little Missouri National Grassland and is about 35 miles south of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It is on private property, owned by the Dennis family who live nearby. At the trailhead, the family maintains a small mailbox-like receptacle for donations to help maintain the area, and requests a $5 contribution from visitors

The expansive golfing community in Bowman County would not be possible without the dream and passion of one man over 60 years ago.

It was a team effort to establish the Bowman Golf Course — now named Sweetwater Golf Course — in 1951, but former Bowman resident Donald Hogoboom spread his love of the age-old sport and inspired many people to help him build a place to enjoy their favorite sport.

Hogoboom, 88, passed away Aug. 12 at his home in Denver, but his legacy lives on every time a person steps foot on the greens in Bowman.

Back then, the golf course was a sand green course, which is relatively uncommon in modern times.

Sand greens were relatively flat, round greens that featured oil-soaked sand as a putting surface rather than grass. The greens had to be raked and smoothed in order to putt on them. They were once a staple of golf in certain areas of the country like Texas and Oklahoma, but a quick Internet search shows anywhere from 100 to 150 courses in the country still have sand greens.

The majesty of the Killdeer Mountains

Killdeer Mountain Battlefield State Historic Site overlooks the site of a battle fought on July 28, 1864, between troops commanded by General Sully and a gathering of Sioux Indians. This attack on an Indian trading village in the Killdeer Mountains was one of a series of military reprisals against the Sioux that followed the US-Dakota War of 1862 in Minnesota. However, many of the village’s inhabitants were not involved in that war. The Killdeer Mountain Battlefield is eight and one-half miles northwest of Killdeer, Dunn County.

The region of Killdeer Mountain was long recognized as a good hunting spot and a gathering and trading point for groups of Sioux people. By July 1864 large numbers of Hunkpapas (including the chiefs Sitting Bull and Gall), some Sans Arc, Miniconjous, and Blackfeet had arrived. Many Yanktonai people and a small number of Dakotas, some led by Inkpaduta, had also gathered.

Dunn County museum houses 150 years of history The Dunn County Historical Museum is located on the original site of the Public School in Dunn Center, just a few blocks north of Highway 200. It was built in 1986 and now includes more than 20,000 square feet of display space, making it possible to house a vast array of historical items. There are several outbuildings on the

grounds which also contain Museum collections.

The main museum building contains many individual “rooms”, including a church display, post office, bank, barber shop and seamstress’ shop.

There is a school area with many items from the Dunn Center School. Also to be seen in the main build-

ing are antique children’s toys, military uniforms and medals, clothing, a postcard collection, cameras, a Native American display, musical instruments, information on the construction of Lake Ilo and the historic Hutmacher homestead, and commemorative items from Dunn County businesses.

A special section of the

main building contains a large Knife River flint exhibit providing much information on the history of flint extraction and tool-making techniques.

The museum is located only a few miles from the renowned Lynch Knife River Flint Quarries, recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2012.

Garrison Dam, N.D., is located 75 miles northwest of Bismarck on the Missouri River. Lake Sakakawea is 178 miles long with 1,340 miles of shoreline and extends from Riverdale to Trenton. There are 35 recreation areas around Lake Sakakawea offering outdoor recreation opportunities such as camping, boating, fishing, sailing and hunting. The lake is an important resting stop for whooping cranes and a nesting area for the least tern and piping plover.

Class B Babe Ruth Tournament returns Spend the Fourth in Hettinger The Annual Fourth of July Celebration is undoubtedly the biggest celebration put on by the Hettinger Chamber.

This year’s Fourth celebration, which runs from Friday July 3, until Sunday, July 5, includes an array of events and activities from inflatables to street dances.

By Cole Benz Adams County Record The North Dakota State Class B Babe Ruth Tournament is coming back to Hettinger for the first time in almost 20 years.

The tournament, which was last held in Hettinger in 1996, will start on July 31 and go through the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of August. Last year the tournament was held in New Rockford, ND. The tournament will feature seven teams from around these state. A champion from each region will advance to the state tournament, with one spot filled by the host team. If the host team wins their region, the second place team will be allowed to compete

at the state level.

Ball players ages 13 to 15 make up the teams from all Class B regions around the state, and come the end of July and beginning of August, residents of Hettinger will get a chance to see the best of the best compete for the championship.

An admission will be charged for game admittance, but the cost has yet to be determined. The games will be played at Mirror Lake Ballpark adjacent to Mirror Lake Park. So if you want to come out and catch a game but you have young children that may not follow the game tentatively, let them play on the playground while you kick back and watch a little baseball.

It’s always a good time at Borderline

By Amy Wolff Adams County Record The Borderline Bar and Grill in Reeder, owned by Todd and Kristy Donner, is a regular favorite to locals and a pleasant surprise to passerby. Purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Donner in 2006 from Mike and Heidi Mellmer, this establishment is truly a one of a kind. The building was constructed in 1948 and has been home to food and fun for the whole family going back to its time as a bowling alley. To this day, the owners take great pride in their family-friendly atmosphere.

On any given day, patrons in the restaurant can be heard personally thanking the couple for a great experience and raving about the

“awesome food and awesome service.” Mrs. Donner explained that one of her favorite parts about owning this business is meeting the many new people that travel from a 150 mile radius, but then seeing them return, “because they were surprised by the Borderline Bar and Grill.”

Mr. and Mrs. Donner show an equal amount of appreciation for their employees detailing how “they are all great workers,” so much so that they made sure to send a special thanks to all of their hardworking employees as well as their faithful customers.

The Cave Hills: Explore a unique part of Custer National Forest If you are ever driving north on the CanAm Highway, that is US 85, from the Black Hills of South Dakota, just north of Buffalo, SD in Harding County and you look to your left you will see the Cave Hills, a portion of the Custer National Forest.

The Cave Hills stand as two massive sandstone plateaus rising, in some places, 600 feet above the flat prairie. Their tops are shrouded in the beautifully dark green of ponderosa pine, which contrasts greatly with the golden yellows of the prairie and the Tongue River Sandstone, of which they are composed. When settlers first reached that Cave Hills they found the Hills useful for many of the same reasons that Plains Indians found them to be sacred for millennia. The Hills are sources of scarce, reliable clear water springs, even scarcer timber, and always important game. This group of tribes is as diverse as the Lakota, Mandan, Arikara, Hidatsa, and possibly even the Cheyenne and Crow, and have been conducting cere-

asserting the sacredness of the North Cave Hills and the surrounding series of buttes and mesas. In these statements various examples were put forth to verify the sacredness of the Hills.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe stated the connectedness of the buttes with their creation story and oral histories. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe explained in their resolution that the caves in the North and South Cave Hills are connected underground to Wind Cave in the southern Black Hills, where the Lakota believe they where born onto this Earth.

John Lopez: Turning trash into treasure

John Lopez, a Lemmon, S.D., native, takes scrap iron discarded as broken, bent and useless and turns them into amazing sculptures.

A Lemmon, S.D., native is creating his very own legacy across the country.

John Lopez is a talented sculptor with work displayed from San Francisco to Houston, Texas to Kensington, N.H. The majority of his pieces, however, lie right in South Dakota where he himself was born and raised. His works of art are unlike anything else. Lopez takes scrap iron discarded as broken, bent and useless and turns them into amazing sculptures.

You can see his roots deep in his work.

All of his pieces are nature based including a number of horses, a buffalo, bear and longhorn, not to mention two most impressive tyrannosaurs rex. His inspiration comes from the prairie and his passion from growing up in a small Midwestern town. The two sculptures pictured find their home in Lopez’s very own hometown.

The Triceratops Cowboy can be found on Highway 12 at the Grand River Museum and the Lemmon Cowboy is on display at the town’s high school whose mascots, by no coincidence are the Lemmon Cowboys and Cowgirls.

Boss Cowman 2015: Back to the Future

By Amy Wolff Adams County Record The annual Boss Cowman celebration will kick off July 8 with a SAFE Communities Honoree Picnic at the G.E. Lemmon Park at noon. This year’s honorees are Fred and Karen Beer and the theme is “Back to the Future.” Festivities will continue through July 12.

On Thursday more recognition will be shown to the honorees with a dinner and program in their honor at the Beeler Community Center starting at 5 p.m. followed by a concert of one of the biggest names Lemmon has had to their celebration, the Bellamy Brothers. Tickets are currently on sale at local businesses as well as online and the show will take place at the rodeo arena grandstand just east of town at 8 p.m. There will also be a dance under the famous tent at the end of Lemmon’s main street.

Friday will be another day filled with fun activi-

ties for the whole family as well as the kickoff of the rodeos for the weekend.

Along with the rodeo which starts at 6:30 p.m. that evening, events include story time at the Lemmon Library, the Pearly Shells at the Senior Citizen Center, a golf fun night, activities on Main Street, fireworks and a dance to the Broken Spokes, a local favorite.

On Saturday there will be even more exciting events, including another rodeo and dance to the Beer Slingers of Rapid City. That day there will also be a 5K Run, a golf scramble, mud volleyball and another favorite for many years, the Country Showdown where contestants can show off their talents performing in front of an enthusiastic crowd with prizes to be awarded to the top competitors.

Finally the weekend will wrap up on Sunday with a final rodeo, the “tough enough to wear pink shirt day,” and bingo at the Lemmon Senior Center. People come from all around to en-

was built on the Canadian side to honor the American supporter John A. Stormon. Judge Stormon gave over forty years of devoted service to the International Peace Garden, as Secretary and then President. He died in 1981, but happily lived to see his efforts and the work of many early enthusiasts raise the Garden to its present stage of beauty and popularity.

The park plants over 150,000 flowers each year.

Main features of the garden include an 18-foot (5.5-m) floral clock display, fountains, a chime, and twin 120 foot (37 m) concrete tower straddling the border with a peace chapel at their base.

The chapel walls are inscribed with notable quotes about peace.

The Arma Sifton bells are a chime of 14 bells cast

by Gillett & Johnston bellfounders. The bells were a gift from Central United Church of Brandon, Manitoba, in 1972. The tower was supplied by North Dakota Veterans and dedicated in 1976. Some building remains of the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001, have been placed in part of the garden.

The Peace Garden hosts two youth camps every summer, the International Music Camp and the Legion Athletic Camp.

Located at the garden is the North American Game Warden Museum.
