Mass fatality response training to be held in Baker By Lori Kesinger In a small town, the windows in the houses rattle late at night, waking most out of their sleep. They wake, unfortunately, to tragedy as a large commuter flight has fallen from the sky, crashing just on the outskirts of the town. Rural emergency responders have been dispatched to handle any damage to infrastructure to the surrounding area, but all of the passengers were killed in the crash and the local hospital only has 15 additional beds and one morgue with room for 18 deceased. Two hundred and eleven passengers did not survive when the plane crashed. So what does the local area do? How do they handle the proper

care needed for that many deceased? This is one of the possible scenarios the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium (RDPC) will address during training in Baker Sept. 30. About 30 emergency responders from the region have registered for the mass fatality response training. The eight hour instructor-led course will help prepare rural first responders and officials with the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities to manage a mass fatality incident should it ever impact their area. Participants include first responders, coroners/medical examiners, public health officials, and others with emergency re-

sponsibilities. Issues addressed during the day will include establishing roles and responsibilities, handling family assistance issues, recovering and identifying human remains, managing diversity issues, developing mass fatality plans and identifying federal, state and local response resources. Congress and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established the RDPC to provide relevant all-hazards training to rural emergency responders. All training delivered by the RDPC is certified by DHS and is offered tuition-free.

Baker Chamber welcomes fall with festival celebrated downtown By Lori Kesinger It was all happening under sunny skies and with the sweet and salty smell of kettle corn during the Fall Festival held in downtown Baker Sept. 12. The annual Baker Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture sponsored event brought the community together to celebrate the changing of the seasons. Dave and Wendy Shreeve from Forsyth brought their Prairie Fire Kettle Korn and several vendors set up around the festivities with everything from arts, crafts, home based business products and jewelry. Members of the Fallon Medical Complex Foundation served hot dogs and tacos-in-a-bag to the lunch crowd. Numerous children enjoyed Funflatables sponsored by the Baker Oil-

field Open Golf Committee and Fallon County Commission. The free inflatable fun included a joust arena, velcro wall, bounce house and obstacle courses. Young and old alike enjoyed a variety of music provided by Dustan Davis. In the afternoon a Rubber Duck Race was held on a makeshift river on the patio of the Baker Club hosted by the Chamber. Ten heats were held on the river and the winners of each heat moved onto the grand finale. Grand finale winners were Andy Hepperle, Mary Mangold, and Allan Barth. Heat winners received gift certificates at local businesses. The finale winners received a percentage of funds raised for the races with the SEE FALL FESTIVAL, PAGE 10

By Lori Kesinger The Baker Police Department is reminding residents to secure their valuables and lock their cars. The police department has received further reports of stolen property from inside vehicles parked in Baker. The thefts have often occurred through unlocked doors, however, leaving even a phone in plain sight may give a thief enough reason to break in. These thefts often increase during warm weather simply because it is a lot more convenient to do it, especially later in the evening. Citizens are advised to always lock their vehicles, remove any valuables and report any suspicious activity in the community.

Renner pleads not guilty Jacob Dean Renner, formerly of Baker, pleaded not guilty to felony burglary in Baker court Sept. 8. Renner was a past employee of Equity Coop familiar with the location of a walk-in safe. After breaking into the building back in June, a surveillance video clearly identifying Renner showed him walking through the offices, entering the walk-in safe, and attempting to open a cash register. Renner is next due in court Oct. 6.
