Enrollment in Fallon County schools increase By Shannon Johnson

This year Baker and Plevna schools have an increase in enrollment from last year. Baker has an increase of one student at Lincoln School with 125 students for the school year. Longfellow School has 144 students, the same as it did last year. The 7th and 8th grade have eight more students, while Baker High School has two more students than it did last year.

The enrollment at Plevna Public School has increased as well. As of Aug. 21 they had 104 students, not including preschool. “That number changes daily,” said superintendent Nick Schumacher. They ended last year with 97 students and had lost 12 over the summer. “Last year we started school with I think 86 students. We had kids coming here throughout the year.”

Fall Festival

By Shannon Johnson

The weather is cooling and that means that Fall Festival is approaching! Fall Festival will be back downtown this year on First Street West. The event is set for Saturday, Sept. 7. Fall Festival will begin with local vendors selling their crafts, products and food from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Dustan Davis will be there to add to the atmosphere with music. There will be a lunch of tacos in a bag and hot dogs, sponsored by Fallon Medical Complex, served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Kids can run off their energy in the inflatables which will be set up from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.! Don’t miss the duck races! They are set to begin at 2 p.m. on the patio of the Baker Club. Fall Festival isn’t the only excitement going on that day. Products of the Prairie is also holding a market that day and after enjoying your day outside, you can head down to the livestock barn at the Fallon County Fairgrounds and dance the night away at the Barn Dance and Dinner put on by the Baker Lions Club! The dinner is set to go from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., so stop down and get your plate of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and a dinner roll, and don’t forget about cake and ice cream for dessert! The dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. following dinner and will run until 11:30 p.m, with music by DJ Vaughn Zenko. The cost of the meal and dance is $15.00 for adults, and $7.00 for children thirteen and under. Even if you aren’t hungry, you can still put on your dancing shoes! Tickets to attend the dance only are just $5.00!

Baker High School senior makes music abroad By Shannon Johnson

This summer, Baker High School senior Alissa Schell, daughter of Keri and Rick Schell, traveled to Europe with 291 other students from the region for a music tour. Alissa participates in band where she plays the flute, as well as choir. “It was a group called the Northern Ambassadors of Music,” Alissa noted. “You have to get invited to it.” The Northern Ambassadors of Music is a subdivision of a larger organization called Voyagers International. Voyagers International is a Colorado-based company that was started in 1970 with the purpose of bringing the musical talents of American students abroad. Alissa was filled with excitement when she received

her letter of invitation. She received it a year prior to the music tour. She didn’t have much time to fundraise be-

tween work and school, but she had enough money saved up from working for the past two and a half years to attend

the tour. Although traveling alone for the first time had her nerves in knots, Alissa remained excited.

Before taking to the sky to travel abroad, the group met at a camp in Fargo at NDSU on July 5 to do rehearsals for

a few days before leaving. “We left in early July, but we got our music in June, so we had time to practice on our own before we got together with the group,” she explained. “I actually had to leave right after the fireworks on the Fourth of July and catch a bus to Fargo. We did rehearsals all day. It was pretty fast paced.” Since Alissa was participating in both choir and band she had to go back and forth between rehearsals and only got half of the time that students who only participated in one were able to have, as both band and choir rehearsals happened at the same time. That Monday they held a farewell concert in Fargo so parents could watch the students perform. Following the
