Fair rodeo will have a whole new look By Lori Kesinger When fans come to see the rodeo this year many will wonder if they are seeing things right - the arena will be different. After decades of use, the old arena was becoming outdated and wasn’t safe for rodeo stock or contestants. Many contestants didn’t want to compete in Baker because of the conditions. The Fair Board listened to numerous comments on needed improvements and consulted the stock contractor prior to construction. The most drastic changes to the new arena included moving the announcer’s stand farther back for a better view of the bucking chutes. Timed events moved to the

south end. More pens were added in the back; new sand for the arena surfacing; and overall, the arena extended and made wider. “We tried to make it bigger and better for all events,” said Fair Board member Jerrid Geving. Crews have been working steadily over the summer to ensure the arena would be complete and ready for the fair. The new arena will improve rodeo performances and competitors will find it more user friendly. PRCA Rodeos will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Fallon County Fair.

Wagner dies in crash in Carter County Stan Wagner, 16-year-old Baker teen, died in an August 7 single-vehicle rollover on Powderville Road near Ekalaka. According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, the teen and his 16-year-old passenger were heading west down the gravel road when his pickup went off the road and into a ditch.

American Legion collecting photos Fallon Post #35 of the American Legion is attempting to collect a photo of each veteran that has his or her name engraved on the Fallon County Veterans Memorial in Steve McClain Park in Baker. About 200 photos of veterans are on display at the American Legion in Baker and approximately 400 need to be added. Photos will put a face with the name for future generations and will further honor those who served. Send any 8x10 photo of your veteran relative to Fallon Post #35 of the American Legion, PO Box 901, Baker, MT 59313.

He attempted to correct the truck and get it back on the road which caused it to go into a broadside slide and rolling once. Wagner was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the truck. He died at the scene from his injuries. His passenger was wearing a seat belt. She sus-

tained minor injuries and was able to make a phone call for help. Speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors in the crash. Stan is the son of Jake and Wendy Wagner of Baker.

Fairgoers can enjoy festivities, but NO pets allowed By Lori Kesinger Concerts, carnival rides, fair food, and pets - only the first three are allowed at the Fallon County Fairgrounds. During the Fair, the only animals allowed on the grounds are trained service dogs, animals on exhibit or those used during competition or events, such as in the Pet Parade Friday evening. There are no accommodations for pets at the fairgrounds. In years past, fair officials dealt with several pet incidents, specifically dog waste left in high traffic areas on the grounds. Any animal waste can pose a health risk to fairgoers. Pet waste carries bacteria, viruses and parasites that can make people, especially children, sick. Besides, no one

wants to step in it either. If the weather is hot, pet owners also should not leave their animals in a vehicle while they attend the fair. On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. For example, on an 85 degree day, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within ten minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Pets may suffer irreversible organ damage or die if they become overheated. The best thing pet owners can do during the fair is leave their pets at home or make other arrangements for their care.

Walk or run the Spartan 5K for a good cause By Lori Kesinger Runners and walkers around the community will have the opportunity to stay in shape, help a good cause and have a lot of fun during a 5K run/walk scheduled in Baker. The Spartan 5K Run/Walk is being held Saturday, Aug. 22, in an effort to raise proceeds for the Loretta Dapkiewicz Memorial Scholarship Fund. Spencer Losing started the run/walk last year as a way to raise funds for a trip to Europe. This year he says the cause is for a better reason. “This is a way to get the community involved in something important,” Losing said. The run/walk will be non-competitive as no times will be recorded. Participants can be any age and may run or walk the course according to their ability. The run/walk will start at the Baker High School track and follow a set course through the streets of Baker. Registration is onsite at 7:30 a.m. and the run/walk will start at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $10 and participants will receive a T-shirt and water bottle. For further information or questions, contact Spencer Losing at 406-778-2440.
