Fun festivities for the 4 of July at Baker Lake th

On the Fourth of July, Tasha Losing hosted several activities, a food truck, and a bouncy house. There was plenty for all to enjoy! The gazebo area was filled with activities. A colorful bouncy house was set up for kids to play on, a 6-team volleyball tournament was taking place along with a cornhole tournament, a water balloon toss, and there were wheelbarrow and three-legged races as well. The first activity that took place was the beach volleyball tournament. Each team, after paying a $100 entry fee, was competing in a double-elimination bracket for cash prizes. With two courts, the matches would play on well into the evening, with the championship game taking place at around 6 pm
that day. In the end, Hit it Quit it came out on top, beating the Hawks and taking home first place. Throughout the day, several other events occurred as the volleyball teams worked their way through the six-team bracket. The first of these was a wheelbarrow race; this two-person race required that, while one person holds the legs of the other up, the pairs each race down to a marked spot, swap positions (the person who holds the legs of the other), and race back. The first, second, and third place all got to pick from an assortment of prizes donated by local businesses. Among these prizes were water bottles, inflatable pool toys, and t-shirts. The corn hole tournament, three-legged race, and water balloon toss all were done in a similar fashion; each of these events took place basically whenever it felt like there needed to be something else to do.
When asked about how the events at the gazebo went, host Tasha Losing was more than impressed. She said that, even though there was only a week and a half to plan and set up everything for the Fourth, she felt that “the fourth went very well.” She thought that the overall turnout was great considering there had only been a week of advertising; people kept coming by throughout the day. She also pointed out that, “without all the great local sponsors, it would not have been possible.” The Fourth of July would not have been the same without all the happenings at the gazebo. Between the bouncy house, games, races, prizes, and food, it’s hard to imagine how time would have been spent all day before the start of the fireworks show.

Main attraction for Saturday night at the Fallon County Fair this year will be Lorrie Morgan. The LoCash Cowboys will be the opening act. The Fallon County Fair will be held Aug. 13 - 16 this year. . .A bomb exploded inside a portable outhouse at Iron Horse Park near Baker Lake June 27. Police Chief Randy Ketterling questioned three juveniles he had witnessed in the area at the time of the incident. One individual offered a confession and has been charged with criminal mischief. No charges have been filed against the other two alleged accomplices. Fallon County Day events were taking place at the Lake Gazebo and Park that day. . .A medical student from the University of Washington School of Medicine, Whitney Benz, will be doing a one month clinical rotation in Baker July 6 - 31. . .Ismay and Plevna celebrate their centennials July 3 - 5.

Shotgun Red and Steve Hull will entertain Saturday night. . .Since the fire danger wasn’t too high this year, fireworks were once again allowed in Baker. . .Angie Griebel competed in the Little Levi Rodeo in Broadus and was crowned Little Levi Rodeo Queen. . .Britt Owens family invites everyone to an open house July 23 at the American Lutheran Church in appreciation for all the support through the last year. . .Diane Van Gorden received a master of science degree in instructional technology and school library media center administration at Utah State University. . .Hanley brothers and their families treated their many friends to a 75th anniversary of the Hanley ranch where the Pat Hanleys still live. Many friends dropped in for the supper July 8 and the outdoor dance. . .A large family reunion of the Duneman families was held in Baker July 1 and 2. . .The Upper Cut Barbershop introduces a new barber-stylist, Debbie Gonsioroski. . .July 3. Completion of the Baker Jaycee and Jayceen Eastside Park, located on 6th and Texas, is a welcome and wellused addition to the eastside citizens of Baker.. . Softball is growing and growing for the Baker area and it has become necessary to make more room. This year alone there are around 300 people involved and it has become difficult to find a field to hold practice. . .Remember, this Saturday, July 14, is the Chamber of Commerce annual Crazy Days at which time everyone can get in on bargains throughout the city. . .The new family restaurant, “The Talk of the Town,” is now being completed and is planning it’s opening days.

Over 1,000 people attended the 4th of July celebration at the Marmarth rodeo. . .The Montana Fish and Game Department announced that Medicine Rocks State Park just south of Baker received a $20,000 face lift. . .Weather was in the news. With the rain this past week came hail, soft, mushy lumps in some areas while other places were pelted with hard rocks of various shapes and sizes aided by strong winds. Damage reported is between 20 and 75 percent loss. . .Montana-Dakota Utilities filed for an overall increase of six cents a day or $1.80 per month to the average residential gas customer. . .Baker trap shooters who brought home trophies from the State Wildlife Federation trap shoot were Norris Newberry, Claude Ware, Clayton Keech and Jim Anderson.

Elsie Chamberlain was bitten by a rattlesnake at the Harold Rusley farm late Wednesday as she walked across the yard. . .Two new oil wells in Fallon County with initial production totaling 440 barrels daily are listed in the weekly report
of the Montana Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. . .Saturday morning a well planned and good sized parade of floats passed along the main street of Plevna and welcomed a huge crowd to the Golden Anniversary celebration. . .All are invited to the open house to renew the acquaintance of Dr. Robert Weeks, newly arrived physician and resident to Baker.

The drought has about ruined the crops planted this spring. . .Baker Lions Club and their wives attended the installation of their new officers July 11 at the regular dinner meeting of the club. John Mellor installed the following officers: L. Price, president; Dan Helgeson, first vice president; Albert Eckes, second vice president; Dr. R. T. Joyce, third vice president; Ted Betz, tail twister; Connie Hatton, lion tamer; John Lawler, treasurer and Gene Russell, secretary. . .Baker is having growing pains in every direction. On the extreme east side there are new residences for Simon Wosnuk, Verne Leischner, Ernest Christman, Harold Rediske, Ervin Keirle, Walter Spriggs, Herbert Schueler, Martin Setinc, Tommy Ferrel and R. W. Rose. R. H. Clark is planning tourist cabins and Bud Shepherd is starting to build.

Eleven miles of road building between Baker and Ekalaka was included in the road program for eastern Montana, it was announced this week. The work will include grade, gravel and oil and some small bridges. . .The President sent to the Senate July 12 the confirmation of Karl Lentz as postmaster of Baker. . .In listing the assets of the local banks, the Bank of Baker advertises $309,514.96 and the Baker National Bank $269,893.11. . .The night of the Fourth of July and Thursday night of the same week, many farms lying west and north of Plevna lost from 50

The first women’s vacation for Fallon County will be held at Opechee Park near Ekalaka in the Pine Hills for three days beginning July 24. . .At a meeting of the directors of the Baker National Bank July 3, Dick Smith was chosen to fill the cashiership of the bank succeeding E. P. O’Brien. Smith is well known in Baker, having served 16 years as cashier and later as president of the Baker State Bank. . .Partially recompensed in a suit for $900 damages against Tommy Jones north of Ismay for damages their car received in a collision on the highway last September, Francis and Leo Riddle of Plevna by verdict of the jury brought in last evening, were awarded $480 and $30.50 interest. . .A two week course in swimming
and lifesaving instruction will be conducted at the Baker Lake between July 22 and August 3.

Pinochle card games were the cause of lots of laughter (good noise) on July 7 at The Center. In no particular order winners were Marj Peterson, Carl Hepperle and Marvin Gookin. There were only two double pinochles this week. Pinochle will be played again next Sunday, July 14, 2019, at 1:30 p.m. at The Center.

Born to Hans and Albina Tronstad on Sept. 2, 1925, Richard was the fifth of seven children who grew up south of Baker, MT on their family homestead. Facing difficult times during the Great Depression, Richard‘s family home was burned to the ground in July of 1930 and his mother died the following September. Two days after he turned eighteen, Richard enlisted in the army. World War II was in process and he was soon headed overseas. As part of the Third Army, Richard was part of the troops that liberated Paris in August of 1944. Following that, he was wounded in a battle in Metz, France and was sent back to Montana where he was a guard at an army prison in Missoula. While there, he met a young woman, Fern Norris, at a USO dance. They were married on June 7, 1947 and moved to southern Montana. After a few years, they moved to a one hundred and sixty acre plot of land near Fort Shaw, MT, where Richard and his father-in-law built the Tronstad family home. Richard farmed for many decades, adding to the initial acreage as he was able. Richard and Fern raised five children during those years and they both served in various roles in the Fort Shaw Bible Church. Richard leaves behind his beloved wife of 72 years, Fern; two sons, Ralph and Russell (Heidi) Tronstad; two daughters, Janet and Doris Tronstad; one brother,

Fishes of Montana app brings field guide to mobile devices
Bozeman - If you were to catch a lake trout or a bull trout in Montana waters, would you know which is which? A new app may be able to help. “It’s harder than most people think to identify fish correctly,” said Tom McMahon, a professor in the Fish and Wildlife Ecology and Management Program within the Department of Ecology in the College of Letters and Science at Montana State University. “There are a lot of fish that kind of look alike.” In 1971, long before the university became known as Trout U, MSU published “Fishes of Montana” by C.J.D. Brown, and the field guide has since remained a vital resource for identifying species in the field. It includes 80 varieties of fish in the state, with histories, distribution maps and char-
acteristics, but in nearly half a century, the book has never been updated. For years, McMahon and ecology department colleagues Alexander Zale and Christopher Guy, leader and assistant leader of the U.S. Geological Survey Montana Cooperative Fishery Research Unit,bandied the idea of a new edition of the book. However, a different opportunity presented itself when Guy met Whitney Tilt, a Bozeman conservationist whose previous collaborations with Matt Lavin, a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology in MSU’s College of Agriculture, led to two field identification smartphone apps, Montana Grasses and Flora of the Yellowstone Region. Rather than revise and reprint “Fishes of Montana,” the book has been given a

21st century update with the release of its namesake Fishes of Montana app. The app, now available for Android and iOS devices, includes information on 90 native and introduced species. The app is free to download, funded by a $10,000 grant from retailer Patagonia that was awarded to the Department of Ecology to promote the restoration of native fish populations as part of the Trout and Cold Water Fisheries Initiative. The app includes a comprehensive species list for quick reference, which includes the common and scientific names. It tells whether the fish is native or introduced, threatened or a game fish. Fishes of Montana also contains a glossary, a map of major drainages in Montana, diagrams on fish anatomy and links to more resources.
To develop the app, the MSU team enlisted Tilt as project manager and Katie Gibson of the Bozeman company MountainWorks as the developer. They then called on Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, partners in the Cooperative Fishery Research Unit, to provide expertise. “This partnership is really neat,” Guy said. “It allows us to bring it all together and develop a product with the best resources available in the state.” Printed guides have been important for those doing field work in places without an internet connection. The new app is equally portable; Fishes of Montana does not require cellular coverage or a wireless connection for basic identification. The app’s information draws from both books and FWP’s online field guide, FishMT.

“The app is now the most current resource for contemporary taxonomy,” said David Schmetterling, a fisheries research coordinator with FWP who was part of the development team. It also relies on the knowledge base of the fisheries community, FWP and the university. “The faculty at Montana State University are the best ichthyologists we have in the state,” Schmetterling said. “For generations, MSU has been looked at for those skills and that knowledge.” Making correct identifications is important. FWP’s fishing regulations center around being able to identify the species. For example, Guy said lake trout are considered at risk of becoming endangered due to declining populations in their native waters, but invasive when introduced elsewhere. Bull trout are listed as a threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Daily limits, or fishing bans, reflect these designations.

“Lake trout we want gone in many waters,” Guy said. “Bull trout must stay. But they look similar.” Lake trout have more spots than bull trout and their tail fins have deeper forks, according to Fishes of Montana. Bull trout’s spots are a pale yellow on their back and red or orange going down the side. Lake trout have light gray spots, never red or orange. McMahon teaches an ichthyology class each spring. His students learn to identify fish species using a dichotomous key, which gives a couplet, or pair, of statements and asks the user to pick one of the two choices leading them to another couplet. Those choices become increasingly specific until a match is found. Students learn the key, but often don’t rely on it in the field. The broader approach of Fishes of Montana “might actually fit better,” Zale said. The app invites users to

Letter from the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, a Certificate of Subdivision Approval (COSA) is required for any campground/ trailer court plan review. The COSA provided to DPHHS was for the construction of “one single-family dwelling unit, set up as a townhome”. The COSA must reflect the intended use of the property before the department can approve a plan review. Certificate of Subdivision Approvals are issued by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) under the authority and rules adopted pursuant to MCA 76-4-101 et. seq. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality will not issue a COSA for a change of use without Certification by the Local Government that the development has been analyzed for Storm Water Management and the availability of water supply and sanitary sewer collection and treatment (See Attached Municipal Facilities Exclusion Application). In short, MDEQ cannot issue a revised COSA for the intended use as the use has not been reviewed or approved at the Local level (City of Baker). Interpretation: The regulatory requirements of the City Zoning Regulations, The Department of Public Health and Human Services, and the Department of Environmental Quality have created a situation in which an applicant for the creation of a Recreational Vehicle Park cannot be processed. Findings of Fact: •The City Clerk is the duly appointed Zoning Administrator for the City of Baker. •Both the United States and the Montana Constitutions guarantee persons the right to due process. •The regulatory situation described above denies all persons within the City of Baker their rights with respect to certain land use requests. •The regulatory situation, if allowed to continue, could place the City of Baker in an untenable position and could expose the City to unnecessary and expensive legal action. •The Zoning Administrator has duties and responsibilities under the Montana Code Annotated and the Baker Zoning Regulations. PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE Huft Major Subdivision The Fallon County Board of Commissioners will conduct a public hearing on the proposed Huft Major Subdivision submitted by Phillip and Andrea Huft. The hearing is scheduled for 2:45 p.m., in the Commissioner’s Office of the Fallon County Administrative Building, on Monday, July 29, 2019. The proposal is to create 23 single family residential lots on 119.9 acres located in the N½ N½ Section 23, Township 7 North, Range 59 East, P.M.M., Fallon County, Montana. The subject property is located along the south side of Sandstone Road beginning approximately 1/4 mile west of the intersection of Sandstone Road and Montana Highway 7. In addition to the Subdivision application, the County Commissioners will hear and consider a variance request to the maximum dead-end road length specified in Table 1 of Section 7(H) of the Fallon County, City of Baker and Town of Plevna Subdivision Regulations. The regulations limit dead-end roads to a maximum of 600 feet and the requested variance if approved would allow for internal subdivision roads of 1,054, 1057, and 1,299 feet in length. If you don’t know what an adipose fin is, a graphic with an arrow points to its location (between the main back fin and the tail). The app then provides a list of fish meeting the specified characteristics. “The polyclavel approach is user friendly,” Tilt said. “It encourages the user to explore and not worry about making a mistake.” McMahon plans on using the app in his next ichthyology class. Aside from students and scientists, the app is useful for anglers of all ages. According to Schmetterling, one FWP employee took a beta version on a Missouri River

fishing trip and his 10- and 13-year-old children were able to identify the six or seven different species. “The unique thing about this app is it serves many different purposes to different audiences,” he said. Fishes of Montana users could also lend insight into changes in distribution or the presence of fish species, including aquatic invasive species. For this reason, the app has information on ten species the State of Montana hopes never to see in Montana waters, such as the snakehead, round goby and bighead carp. If a user is unable to identify a species or wants to share information, the app contains a direct email link to Schmetterling inviting the user to attach a photo. “What I especially like about the way Fishes of Montana was developed is it promotes communication from people using the app to us,” he said.
