Kevin Dukart Voters sometimes feel a candidate may not represent their interests. Rural and city residents differ in their expectations of government services. My background in agriculture and experience in city government would best serve the diverse issues of the Fallon County voters. As a rancher, I rely on roads to safely transport machinery, care for livestock and to access pastures and fields. In addition, those involved in oil and gas production also depend on these roads. In lean times of oil revenues, a priority of our commissioners should assure that funds are available for road upgrade and maintenance. As commissioner, I would be responsive to those whose livelihood depends upon well maintained county roads. Although I reside in the county, I realize the needs of city residents differ in many ways. Throughout my career in public service as the City of Baker clerk and treasurer, I have demonstrated objectivity to the decisions affecting those I serve. Our county has an important role in shared planning and infrastructure developments affecting the cities. As a commissioner, I would have extensive insight
Dave Havens I am asking you, the citizens of Fallon County, to vote Dave Havens. I have spent the past 8 1/2 months at the commission meetings acquiring “on the job training” skills to become your next commissioner. During this period, I have come to know Commissioner Ranum and Commissioner Baldwin and I know that I can work closely with them. I intend to vote the conscience of the people knowing that we can agree to disagree in achieving the goals of Fallon County. Having attended the Montana Association of Counties meeting last September, I met commissioners, senators and representatives from across the state. The benefits of this “networking” will be instrumental when lobbying in Helena for the needs of Fallon County. I have also met with representatives of the Montana Department of Transportation who deal with the infrastructure of roads in eastern Montana. My past experience working with a U.S. Repre-
sentative in the 101st U.S. Congress has given me experience that only I can bring to the job. I have personally met Senator Daines, Senator Testor, and U.S. Representative Zinke along with many of their staff. I am prepared and ready! I alone have committed to provide access to all citizens by being in office daily from eight in the morning until noon. Also, I will be out visiting the citizens of Fallon County from one in the afternoon until I return home. This is my commitment to being a full time commissioner! I will be there to faithfully serve you, the citizens of Fallon County!
Randy Hoenke I have devoted 32 years working for the citizens of Fallon County. I have been dedicated to serving the people as the Fire Chief and am still active on the department and on various boards. I’m a familiar face and have a diverse background in leadership, a sound business sense, a spirit of integrity and cooperation which are necessary for the growth and progress of Fallon County. I will continue to work hard and listen to the people and make the right decision for the right reasons. I have proved to the citizens that I care for Fallon County and I would be honored if you would elect me to be your
commissioner. I would sincerely appreciate your vote.
Roy Rost I have spent my whole life in Fallon County. I know the people and I know the issues our county faces. My years in agriculture and as a business owner in Baker have helped me to connect with and empathize with people from both rural and city backgrounds. I am honest, trustworthy and a good listener. I have a history of public service in both my church and the community at large. I have also given my time over the years to serving on county and city boards including the Little Beaver Conservation District Board, Planning Board, and the newly formed Zoning Commission Board. These positions have given me insight and equipped me to take on a bigger role in serving Fallon County. I trust in my ability to cooperate with the other commissioners and the city to make the best decisions for the people in the county. On the campaign trail I have had several people ask me why I would want the headache of being commissioner. The answer is that I want to give back to the community that has meant so much to me. I believe that I have the skills necessary to do this job and do it well. I would be honored to have your vote in the June primary.

Plevna School secretary retires after 26 years Classic Cruisers Car Show By Sherry Vogel When Lynette Bohle O’Connor graduated from Plevna High School in 1972, she and a friend, Judy Steffes, headed for the city lights of Minneapolis with their hearts set on becoming airline stewardesses. They enrolled in a finishing school that offered a three month course for airline stewardesses. A past Miss Minnesota was one of their instructors. They learned how to sit properly, Lynette O’Connor walk with a book on their head, apply makeup, and even false eyelashes. They did receive brief instructions on how to book flights. They were disappointed with the training because later they learned they would have to be 21 to become a stewardess. They were 18. Airline companies also prefer to train their own flight attendants. The girls headed back to Baker where they both found employment at the Green Acres Supper Club. Two months later, Lynette moved to Miles City where she found employment at Christiansen’s V-Store. Later, moving back to Baker, she worked in the office of Fallon Memorial Hospital for a year before she started a position at Montana Bank as a secretary. One day in 1976, she was walking to the mailbox

and she was stopped and offered a job as the first secretary for Shell Oil Company in Baker. Lynette accepted the position and worked there for three years. Later, a work acquaintance, Tom Greene, offered her a job at Juniper Petroleum, a new company he was starting. She worked there for three years. In 1978 she married Dan O’Connor. She became a stay at home mom while raising her sons Dirk and Troy. In the summer of 1990 her youngest child was school age and Lynette decided to re-enter the work force. She trained with Mrs. Jeanette Burkle then replaced her as she retired. Over the years she has noted how technology has advanced. When she started as a secretary, the electric typewriter was mainstream. Over the years everything became computerized. “As times changed, in some ways computers made life easier. Although it is quicker now to transmit records (to the state) by computer, there seems to be more records that need to be transmitted,” Lynette stated. “Everything was done manually at first. I remember punching lunch tickets by hand when I first was at the school,” Lynette added. She continued, “I really enjoyed my job. I will miss all the kids and watching them grow up. I also enjoyed working with all the employees at the Plevna School!” SEE O’CONNOR, PAGE 3

FILES OF THE TIMES 10 YEARS AGO Friday, June 9, 2006 -- Unofficial Primary Election results show Donald Rieger as the winner of the Republican race for County Commissioner and Gene Domagala is the Democratic winner. They will face each other in the General Election in November. . . Three Baker youth were arrested May 31 for a break-in at Lawler Drug Store which occurred Jan. 29. Jason Davison, Steven Tiedemann and Jeremiah Davison were arraigned in district court June 6. . . . High temperature was 92 degrees June 2. . . The Order of Quarantine from the Department of Livestock is in effect until July 17. . . A farewell open house party was held May 28 for School Superintendent Ron Meredith. Meredith is concluding a 30 year tenure at the Baker schools. . . Deputy City Clerk Beverly Anderson attended the 26th annual Montana Municipal Institute in Billings recently. . . The annual Baker Car Show held June 3 proved to be a great success. A total of 86 vehicles were in the show, and Ike Reisenauer of Dickinson was awarded the People’s Choice trophy. Traci Bruha is the event coordinator. The Touch-A-truck event was held in conjunction with the car show. . . Plans are being made for Baker’s 100th birthday celebration which will take place in 2008. . . The “Peace Child” production held in Baker this past weekend delivered an inspiring message. The play is based on the true story of missionaries Don and Carol Richardson who were in New Guinea for many years. 20 YEARS AGO Friday, June 7, 1996 -1996 District III Baker Babe Ruth All-Star Tournament is now only weeks away and preparations are in full swing to welcome players and their families to Baker. The City of Baker Park Board and Darlene Hornung, tournament director and Park Board chairperson, have pulled out all the stops to insure an exciting, well-run tournament. . . May 29, Three members of Senior Girl Scout Troop #291 received the highest award given by Girl Scouts - the Gold Award. Baker Girl Scouts who earned this award were Heather Klang, Hope Klang and Jana Obye. . . Reiny and Violet Straub will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary June 10. . . Thursday, June 5, 1986-- In January, Fallon County Commissioners applied for a drilling permit to drill their own gas well. They contended that if the county had their own well it would create a savings of approximately $76,000 per year. The permit was denied by the Montana Oil and Gas Commission. . . Virgil and Mildred Moline will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 8; Andrew and Margie Sonsalla will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary June 15. . . Blood glucose screening at the Health Awareness Clinic next week will be Bill Price’s Eagle Scout project. . . Fallon County Commissioner candidates elected in the primary election were Rodger Myhre and Ronald Shepherd. . . John Meccage, Jr. is hospitalized in Baker with broken ribs and various bruises the result of an accident with his three-wheel vehicle. 40 YEARS AGO Thursday, June 3, 1976 -The last college rodeo of the season, held in Dillon, saw Sherman Engesser taking home the All-Around Cowboy winnings. He was first in the roping and first in bull dogging. . . Piano students of Mrs. Marion Callen in second through sixth grades presented a recital in her home May 26. those participating were Sandi Kruger, Tanya and Teri Dilworth, Vicki Uttke, Roger Klofkorn, Kathy Irvine, Kami Stadel, Robynn Enos, Beth and Ken Babcock, Starla Householder, Dena Ehret, and Pam Fried. . . Gene Wellenstein, bank president, and Ed and Jake Ehret, Fallon County ranchers, announced this week they have been negotiating with John Vucurevich of Rapid City to purchase the Bank of Baker and hope to sign the final papers today. . . With 156 contestants entered in the Lions Club Little Britches Rodeo, local girl Pam Askin took home the most points of the two day affair. . . For the fifth year in a row, Randash Motors has donated the Drivers’ Education car for Plevna High School. . . Poisoned by the bite of a rattlesnake, Elvina Wasnuk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Wasnuk, was brought in from the ranch 20 miles south of Plevna Sunday in very serious condition. . Dr. W. H. Blakemore moved his office equipment this morning into part of the building formerly occupied by the post office. The new location is on the ground floor.
Cards Ten people came out to play pinochle May 29 at the Baker Senior Center. There was one table of four players and two tables of three players. Winners were Alvina Varner - won twice, Gwen Setinc and Carl Hepperle. Pinochle will be played again next Sunday, June 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the Senior Center.

100 Years Ago Dancers from all over the country dedicate new store The dedication of the Midland Coal & Lumber Company’s new store building last night was one of the notable social functions of the season. The hard maple floor proved excellent for dancing, and was thronged from nine o’clock until daylight this morning when the orchestra played the “Home, Sweet Home” waltz. There were a number of people here from the outside. The music was excellent, it being furnished by the Ekalaka Orchestra. ____________ : ____________
Plevna men interview county commissioners A.W. Kimpton and G.J. Buergi of Plevna were here interviewing the commissioners Tuesday in reference to the petition for incorporation of that town which was recently filed with the board. The commissioners will appoint a census enumerator to determine whether the town has the required 300 population, of which there is no doubt. Baker Mill’s Product Fine The Baker flour mill is now turning out a first-class product. Formerly known as the William O’Loughlin Mill, it was taken over several weeks ago by a strong company of eastern capitalists, incorporated under the name of Baker Milling & Grain Company. General Manager Prall returned Friday morning and it was not long thereafter that the wheels were turning. The company has been fortunate in securing the services of a first-class miller, Mr. J.A. Brownson, of Ohio. The flour turning out is testing up very fine, according to Mr. Prall, and is equal to anything on the market. ____________ : ____________

Shepherds celebrate 65 year wedding anniversary By Sherry Vogel Ronald and Ramona Shepherd of Baker celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in their home May 28, 2016. Approximately 50 family and friends gathered to have cake and congratulate them. The couple’s children and grandchildren honored them with a funny skit and serenaded them in song. Instrumental music “Because” was played on the French horn and “Always” was played on the alto sax. These selections were from original music played at the couple’s wedding ceremony. Ramona Phebus and Ronald Shepherd were married May 27, 1951, in the American Lutheran Church in Baker. They have lived in Baker all their married lives. Ron served as mayor and later as county commissioner for 12 years. He is presently engaged in ranching with his youngest son Chad. Ramona taught country schools while Ron served in Korea. She owned and operated Mona’s Floral for 12 years. Shepherds have three chil-
Mrs. Tunby, Mr. Walters, Mrs. Bidwell and Miss Park’s classes have been traveling to Superior Care Villa to read to the residents. Residents enjoyed the visits and listening to the children read. Mrs. Tunby invited the residents to Plevna to have lunch with the students. Each resident sat at a table with the readers. The high school students helped the residents through the lunch line and carried their trays for them. The kitchen staff prepared a delicious meal of hot ham and cheese sandwiches, homemade knoephla soup, chocolate cake with hot fudge topping, and a scrumptious salad bar. The students grew the lettuce that was in the salad bar. It was a great outing. Pictured going through the lunch line are Mary Stark and Darline Ketterling.

Fallon County Democratic Convention ______________ Submitted by Maxine Rost The Fallon County Democrats are calling their 2016 Democratic Delegate Selection County Convention for the Democratic National Convention to be held Thursday, June 9, 2016. We will caucus with the purpose of electing delegates to be sent to the Montana Democratic Party’s Delegate Selection Convention in Helena, Saturday, June 11, to elect Montana Democrats to serve as delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia the week of July 25, 2016. We invite all Democrats who are registered to vote in our county to participate in this process. There is no cost to participate and we encourage all Democrats, including
members of minority groups to attend and be part of the County Convention, and the venue for the convention is accessible to Democrats with disabilities. May 27-28, six boys and seven girls traveled to Bozeman to participate in the State Class B Track Meet. On the boys’ side, Matt Packer competed in the shot put, discus, and javelin. He just missed the podium, placing 7th in the javelin and 8th in the shot. Daniel Rost participated in the triple jump but failed to make finals. The 4x100 relay team of Dalton Herbst, Nic Bohle, Austin Braun and Jordan Baxter ran well but did not make the finals. On the girls’ side, Scotti Robinson was able to compete in seven events at the meet - five individual and two relays. Individually, Scotti placed 5th in the 300m hurdles, 7th in the 200 and 400, and 9th in the 100 and pole vault. In the javelin, two girls were in the top six, Madison Reddick placed 3rd and Elisa Hautala placed 4th. Madison Reddick also ran the 400m and did the triple jump, but did not place in those events. Savanah Burkhalter participated in the 200m and 400m and just missed the finals in the 200. Melissa Breitbach and Alivia Schultz competed in the high jump and Morgan Miller in the triple jump.

The 4x100 relay (Madison Reddick, Amber Durden, Savanah Burkhalter and Scotti Robinson) made the finals but just missed out on the medals by finishing 7th. The 4x400 relay (Madison Reddick, Savanah Burkhalter, Morgan Miller, Scotti Robinson) finished the meet with a third place medal. It was a great ending to an exciting track season. The graduating seniors will be missed but there is a solid group of athletes coming back next year to continue the Spartan track tradition.

Fallon County Timely-Tips By Sherry Vogel Summer is a time to travel. The kids are out of school and the weather is favorable. Due to lower gas prices, fuel is cheap. It’s the perfect opportunity to round up the family, pack the car, and head out on the road for the ultimate adventure. Many parents traveling with children know how quickly boredom can set in which can lead to sibling squabbles in a very confined area. Here are a few sanity saving tips for traveling with youngsters. Car Bingo: Those square cards with sliding clear plastic windows to cover items spied along the road are still available. Tip - sweeten the pot by offering small prizes. New Toys: Make a trip to the dollar store without the children and purchase activity books, coloring books, or pocket games. Tip - take a new surprise out one by one as the child gets bored with the last activity. New Foods: Purchase snacks and foods you usually don’t buy. The sheer joy of trying new treats will keep the kids happy and healthy. Tip - think fruit leather, flavored popcorn, trail mix or pretzels. Juice boxes are a good idea for car travel. Family Games: Children and parents enjoy having the opportunity to learn to interact with each other while building vacation memories. Playing such games as I Spy, the License Plate Game and family sing-alongs are fun. Tip - It’s a prime opportunity to share stories about family and ancestral history.

Mount Rushmore excursion _______________ By Layne Silver-Farris Grades three through six left for Mount Rushmore May 23. While there they took a tour of the National Park and had a great time. Some facts about Mount Rushmore: • Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a massive sculpture carved into a mountain in the Black Hills region of
South Dakota. • It was completed under the direction of Gutzon and Lincoln Borglum from 1927-1941. • The sculpture is roughly 60 feet high, the granite faces depict U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

Plevna Kindergarten graduation ___________ May 25 at 7 p.m. Mrs. Bidwell had nine students graduate from kindergarten. They were Blaine Buerkle, Colton Lane, Tucker MacYeaple, Michael Puskas, Jackson Robertus, Devyn Schwartz, Emma Thielen, and Jacob Tutas. They watched a recap of their year on video, then they presented their own rendition of the play “Sleeping Beauty”. Motor Sports Complex receives facelift This spring, the Motor Sports Complex just west of Baker has undergone a facelift. TriArea Racing Association changed the Bump N Run track and will tackle the motocross track in the upcoming weeks. Upgrades to the Bump N Run track included banked corners to help avoid rollovers, widened to accommodate the anticipated increase in racers and will have improved drainage. The southwest bank area of the arena will be sloped to allow spectators to view the entire track. A portable registration trailer is being built to aid in the efficiency of driver registration. The building will be electrified so programs with that day’s racers can be distributed for the spectators to watch their favorite racers all the way through to the Mains. The motocross track will have part of the existing track

converted into a technical course. Some of the current jumps will be dressed up and widened so four-wheelers can maneuver the track as easily as motorcycles. This year’s Bump N Run race is Sunday, June 26, at noon with two main classes of cars: Modified and Limited. A guaranteed purse of $7,500 will be split between the first six places of each class. Trophies will be awarded to the top five places in each class. Another race will also be held Saturday, July 23, in Baker. The Montana Bump N Run Association is also promoting a truck class and a pure stock class so there will be a variety of racing entertainment. There will also be a calcutta again this year as well as concessions provided by Brightside Day Care.
By Sherry Vogel Bill Harris, Winnett, is eyeing his third term in the Montana House of Representatives this upcoming election. If successful in his bid, this will be his final term. A politician is limited out after serving three terms. “I’ve always said if I feel I’m contributing, I will go back. I felt that way more this year than ever before.” Harris, a fourth generation Montana rancher, believes that Montana needs ordinary people to stand up and defend its freedom and future prosperity. He states, “I am not a lawyer or elite, I am a Reagan Republican and a Commonsense Conservative.” He has been a strong opponent in providing and supporting legislation mutually beneficial to wildlife management, outdoor sportsmen, and property owners. He fights to limit government and expand economic opportunity as well as individual freedom in Montana. Born in Lewistown and raised north of Grass Range, this Vietnam vet has been successful in building a ranch as well as establishing a successful hunting business, Fort Musselshell Outfitters and Crooked Creek Marina. This helped to create jobs and badly needed economic activity to his area. Harris has been very active in creating bills concerning mental health issues in the state, as well as a promoter of gun rights, blocking attempts
to hold off free-ranging bison herds in central Montana, providing tax credits to employers who assist employees with paying off student loans, and requiring that Federal mandates be made public. Harris stands by a quote from Thomas Jefferson, “Leave no authority existing that’s not responsible to the people.” This leads him to de-

To the Citizens of Fallon County My campaign for Fallon County Commissioner began in August of 2015; over eight months ago. That is when I began attending the Commission meetings to learn and understand what the position entails.

However, my desire to prepare for public service began in 1988 when I enrolled at Montana State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. I pressed myself to acquire my degree as quickly as possible, (having a wife and three children to support), thus graduating in three years with highest honors. In the process of acquiring my Master’s Degree, I was approached by the office of U.S. Congressman, Ron Marlenee, inquiring if I would be interested in employment as Director of Special Projects. I accepted the position and had the opportunity to work both in the State of Montana and in Washington D.C. during the 101st session of the United States Congress. During this time I acquired invaluable knowledge and understanding of the policitical processes. One of the most important lessons I learned was that “you are here to serve the people -- all of the people”. I still hold this true today and always will. In Fallon County and beyond, every person has a voice to be heard! In serving you as Fallon County Commissioner, I will keep the “public” in public service. As your commissioner, I will divide my work week into two periods: The first period will be the time spent in the Commission Office and the second period will be driving thoughout the county making direct contact with the citizens of Fallon County. Since I have been attending the Commission meetings, I have learned it is hard for people to find the time from busy work schedules to attend the meetings but I know I have the time during the week to come to you! As your Commissioner, I want you to know that I am committed to conveying my time to you, the citizens of Fallon County. I have served on the Park Board, Golf Board and the Baker School Board. I am familiar with multimillion dollar budgets, including the County Budget. I have attended several meetings in the past eight months, including the Montana Association of Counties 106th Annual Convention in Missoula, Eastern Montana Department of Transportation in Miles City and the Montana State Energy Summit in Billings to name a few. I have met and became friends with several key people across the State. A career change came when Montana dropped from two State Representatives to one. I returned to Baker and began my oilfield service business, Silverado Production Service employing four people in well servicing. I expanded the business including roustabout service, lease operators and coil tubing employing 26-30 employees. I sold this business and opened Oiltech Consulting, another successful company. Other oilfield and various jobs ensued until I retired from Consulting in January 2015.

Growth Policy Update meeting will have State reps Submitted by Mary Grube, Planner Administrative Assistant The Planning Board has invited Montana Department of Environment, Montana Department of Transportation, and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks to participate in discussion at the next Planning Board meeting to be held June 6, 2016. Shane Mintz, MDOT from Glendive, will be here to discuss planned constructions activities in the area over the next five years; the Transportation Alternatives Grant Program; transportation planning efforts in the area over the next five years; bike, pedestrian and multi-use trails as part of a MDT construction project; and any other pertinent information related to the growth policy. Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks will have a representative here to discuss any planned construction or land acquisition activities in the area over the next five years; any impacts or benefits of the Upland Game Bird Enhancement Program; regional parks, or enhancement efforts in the area over the next five years; any requirements in our local Growth Policy that will ensure funding/construction of bike, pedestrian and multiuse trails as part of an FWP construction project; and any other pertinent information related to the growth policy. Montana Department of Environment Quality will be sending a couple representatives who will be speaking on renewable and alternative energy projects in the area; discussion of impact and benefits of the new sage grouse rules and requirements on development activities; a discussion of the new Municipal Facilities Exemption rules and requirements for development in areas served or proposed to be served by municipal water and sewer; requirements of the local growth policy to ensure funding for extension of public water and waste water under the DEQ grant/funding programs; and any other pertinent information related to the growth policy. This meeting will not only include discussion in these areas, but will also include discussion in Oil, Gas and Industrial Development and the effects of the decline. We encourage large landowners and the real estate community to participate as well. Old Times building leaves Main Street - summer 1962
By Sherry Vogel The former home of the Fallon County Times is leaving for its new location at the Baker Cement Plant north of the tracks. It was built in 1913 by L. A. Conser, attorney and publisher, to house the Baker Sentinel, the first newspaper in the community. In 1927 Conser moved his shop to a building south of the Baker Hotel and sold the property to K.R. Pleissner. Pleissner, who had purchased the year old Baker Fallonite from Butte Tipton in1917, changed the name to the Fallon County Times and had operated it for ten years in the Silvernagle building. The Pleissners bought out the Sentinel and continued to operate the Fallon County Times until they sold to L.K.Lathrop in 1952. Margaret Lathrop continued to publish the Fallon County Times after her husband, L.K., passed away in 1957. When the new Post Office was completed in 1962, it moved out of the Grant building (present office of the Fallon County Times). Now, Mr. Bud Price was looking to build a new hardware store next to his dad’s original store. (Old white clapboard building town down in 2014, between the Insurance Store and the Prairie Rose Classics building.) So he purchased the newly vacant building from Mr. Grant. Mr. Price then went across the street and approached Mrs. Lathrop with a proposal to “trade” the Grant building on its lot for the old Times building and the lot it was sitting on. She happily accepted the offer because the Grant building was a newer and better building than the Times. After the printing presses were moved across the street, the Prices had the old Times building moved off the lot. The stately old clapboard building came to rest at the Baker Cement Plant north of town. It was used as storage until 2014 when it was torn down. Home of Present Times Building

Property Rights Organization ________ WBI Natural Gas Storage By Wanda Pinnow In April many Fallon County residents, city and rural, received letters from WBI Energy Transmissions asking them to sign an agreement for a natural gas storage field. The field in Fallon County first originated in 1946. Our field is the third largest in the world and the largest in the United States. The 90,000 acre field, which lies in the Judith Basin formation, goes north of Little Beaver to the Wibaux County line. Yes, it passes right through most of Baker. The reason for WBI asking landowners to sign a new easement is that in 2014, Montana State law changed due to a court case of a landowner challenging an oil company on underground storage. The new law, MT Code 82-11-180, 10301(3), states now that the landowner owns the space not the mineral owner. Previously, WBI got the mineral owners’ permission to lease the formation, with the law changed they must get permission from the landowner. If you are the current landowner and did not receive a letter, that means the previous landowner already gave WBI the right to store natural gas. This would have showed up as an easement when you bought the property when a title search was done. Two public meetings have been held - first one May 6 and the second one May 26. From these meetings a committee was selected to negotiate a lease agreement with WBI representatives. The

The county attorney and city attorney along with the county commissioners are part of our group. If you received a letter, please do not ignore it. By doing that, WBI will just pay the amount promised and get their easement. The written easement they sent you is a blanket easement giving them too much control over your surface and the storage space. They do not need that much control. The group is not telling WBI no to storage, we have told them we need a language change in the contract. The more people we have the louder our voice is.

Powder River Training Complex exercise scheduled Ellsworth Air Force Base, SD - A large force exercise military aircraft has been scheduled for June 7-9 in the Powder River Training Complex. During this period, people living under the following PRTC military operations areas can expect to see multiple types of aircraft utilizing the areas simultaneously: Powder River One, Powder River Two, Powder River Three, Powder River Four, Gaps A, B and C. There is also potential for loud noises associated with sonic booms. All B-1 supersonic activities will occur above 20,000 feet MSL and all transient fighter supersonic activity will occur above 10,000 feet AGL. People living under the following PRTC military operations areas can
expect to be affected: Powder River Two, Powder River Three, Gap B. A map of the airspace is available for reference on the Ellsworth AFB website at: http://www.ellsworth.af.mil/p rtc.asp. As a reminder, non-military aircraft should thoroughly review the Federal Aviation Administration’s Notice to Airmen, or NOTAMs, and review flight plans to avoid

tions. This type of training is limited to ten days each year, with each exercise lasting no more than three days. These events will only occur once each three-month period, as separated into January through March, April through June, July through September, and October through December. The new PRTC officially opened Sept. 17, 2015, upon its charting by the FAA, and military flying operations began Sept. 18, 2015.
Jacob Hadley, senior at Billings Central Catholic High School, has been named the 2016 Midland Roundtable Male Athlete of the Year at the event banquet May 18 in Billings. Jacob is the son of Justin and Brook (Gundlach) Hadley of Billings, and grandson of Robin and Rich Menger and Jack and Carolyn Hadley and great-grandson of Leland Gundlach and Ruth Deviney, all of Baker. The Midland Round Table recognizes the top five male and five female senior athletes from all four Billings high schools for their athletic accomplishments as well as student and community involvement. From the ten finalists, one male and one female is selected Athlete of the Year. Jacob is a three sport athlete. In football, his achievements
earned him threetime All-Conference, two-time All-State, Great Falls Tribune Super State Team, All-USA Montana Football Team, EastWest Shrine Game (to be played in Butte June 18), Badlands Bowl Game (to be played in Dickinson July 16), MVP and team captain. In basketball, he was two-time All-Conference, All-State, All-State Tourney Team, team captain and has been chosen to play in the Montana-Wyoming All-Star Series June 10-11 in Sheridan, WY (June 10, and Billings (June 11). In this, his first season of track and field, Jacob competes in long, triple and high jump. He currently has the highest mark in the state in high jump with a jump of 6’ 6 1/4” and will compete in all three events at the State A Track Meet in Bozeman May 27-28. Jacob has also been named Academic All-State all four years of high school with a 4.0 GPA. Jacob’s future plans are to attend Montana State University-Bozeman on a football scholarship and study financial engineering.

Blood drive very successful Submitted by Ella Arnell The United Blood Drive was held May 25. We had 50 units of blood donated. There were several walk-ins along with our scheduled people which helped make our count close to a record high of donations. Blood donations are separated into components so each donor helps several patients. Platelets promote blood clotting and are often needed by patients with leukemia and cancer; red cells carry oxygen and are used to treat anemia; plasma - the liquid part of blood - is given to patients bleeding from liver disease and severe injuries; cryoprecipitate contains blood clotting proteins and is used to treat or prevent bleeding. Treats were donated by the Bank of Baker and the Lions Club. The next drive will be held Wednesday, July 27.

Memorial Day Memories

By Sherry Vogel As rain clouds hung low, I stood surrounded by tombstones in the midst of the Bonnievale Cemetery, among a handful of townspeople Memorial Day, May 30, morning. As taps began to ring out across that shadowy landscape, my thoughts went to the many American families grieving the recent loss of a beloved son, husband or father this Memorial Day. The men and women being honored were not only the fallen soldiers of a gone by era, but the recent lost military loved ones of families all across America. They are the brave men and women who stepped forward when their country called. They answered the call to travel to foreign soils, such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan. I, too, had sent a son off to war. It was not that long ago. The memory, though buried now in a sign of relief, was surfacing as that familiar melody rang out across the crisp landscape. I remembered the long nights when I would awake in the wee hours of the morning and drift to the TV to hear the latest war briefs on CNN. I yearned, yet dreaded, to hear word of my Marine son’s

recon unit as they advanced into hostile Iraq. I remember an evening at work when down the long hospital hall a young soldier in full dress uniform was speaking to a fellow worker and she pointed up the hall at me. The young soldier, with dress hat tucked under his arm, solemnly and intently made his way directly toward me. I held my breath as I prepared myself for the worst. My knees felt weak and tears rimmed my eyes. As he approached, I braced myself for the news that every soldier’s mother fears to hear. When he was before me, he opened his mouth to ask directions to his grandmother’s room. He had come to visit her wearing his full dress uniform. I was spared that evening.
How many times has a similar scene been re-enacted over and over again, but the news was life changing when some soldier’s mother learned the heart wrenching news of her military child’s tragic death? How does a mother come to terms with the untimely death of a brave young son or daughter who has marched off gallantly to war? As the rain began to fall, many tears were camouflaged that early morning in that cemetery just north of town. However, some pain was eased as townspeople came together to show their respect for the ultimate sacrifice that parents and their sons or daughters have made across our country so everyday Americans can go about Memorial Day celebrations.

Baby wins grand prize - 1924 automobile car and put his name on one of the tickets. As luck would have it … he at the tender age of 18 months old was the grand prize winner! We were excited that the winner of the Fallon County Times first contest was still alive. Then we did the math - the grand gentleman was born in 1923, six years after our contest. So in researching the claim, we discovered although the gentleman did not win our contest, he did indeed win a car as a grand prize in another ‘Lucky Winner’ 18 month old, Drury Phe- drawing held in Baker just six years later.
