Lights of Life to glow bright for annual ceremony By Lori Kesinger The Friends of FMC Foundation would like to invite everyone to the 12th annual Lights of Life ceremony Sunday, June 28. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. at the Fallon Medical Complex Healing Garden, located outside in the center of the facility. There will be a guest speaker, music and refreshments served by the Knights of Columbus.

Severe storms reported outside Baker area By Lori Kesinger Severe weekend thunderstorms largely missed Baker, but hit surrounding areas hard. During the evening of June 19, a storm swept through the area with golf-ball size hail and heavy rainfall. Baker missed the brunt of the storm but areas south of the city were damaged. Broken windows were reported from Roxie Lane continuing southeast through Fallon County. Baker received over an inch of rain. More severe weather on June 21 produced large hail, heavy rainfall and damaging winds. An extremely dangerous thunderstorm in the late afternoon had 70 mile an hour wind-driven baseball size hail crossing Highway 12 seven miles southwest of Ismay. The intense storm missed Plevna as it tracked southeast through Fallon County with golf ball size hail damaging vehicles, homes, crops and trees. A funnel cloud was sighted southwest of Baker near Coon Creek Road. The storm eventually produced a tornado in South Dakota. By Lori Kesinger You won’t have to go far to enjoy a day of community fun in the sun. The annual Fourth of July celebration, Fallon County Day, will be held Saturday, July 4, in Baker at Triangle Park, located by the Roger Schmidt Amphitheater and Baker Lake Gazebo. The family fun activities will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. for the 5K Walk/Run event. Entry fees will include a Fallon County 5K T-shirt, and the proceeds will benefit the Fallon County Recreation Department youth programs. The 5K Walk/Run begins at 8 a.m. and strollers and wagons are welcome. An aid station will be provided along the route, and refreshments will be available at the finish. Medals will go to the first place male and female in each of the six age categories. Children can participate in the Kids’ Fun Run at 9 a.m. and enjoy free N-Flatable-Fun from 2-9 p.m. Amusements will include Toy Story Jump House, Splash Island Waterslide, The Eliminator, and Rock Climbing Wall. The Lakeview Country Club will have golf scrambles at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., and free golf starting at 1 p.m. Join the fun as a spectator or player in a free co-ed sand volleyball tournament at 2 p.m. or a free horseshoe tournament at 4 p.m. Music will be provided throughout the day by the Rock Jocks, and concessions will be available.
