TAKE NOTE . . . Account set up for Schmidt Brandon Schmidt of Baker has been taken to the Cardiovascular Center at the University of Utah with a serious heart condition. He is throwing strings of PVCs after four days of treatment in Billings. His heart is operating at eleven percent. Last update at press time. He will need the community’s support until they can stabilize his condition. There is an account set up at the Fallon County Federal Credit Union for taking care of his monthly responsibilities. As this community has been so generous in the past, we hope they will show him how much we appreciate all he does for the community.

Memorial Day Services Memorial Day Services will be held at the Community Union Cemetery in Plevna at 9 a.m. Monday, May 25. A service will also be held at the Bonnievale Cemetery in Baker at 11 a.m. speaker for the services will be Pastor Jim Biswell, Medicine Rocks Church.

District Judge Huss resigns By Lori Kesinger An Eastern Montana District Judge is confronting a sexual harassment complaint from a previous employee and has resigned from his position. District Judge George W. Huss of Forsyth sent Chief Justice Mike McGrath his letter of resignation April 21. He stated he was resigning his position and retiring as the 16th Judicial District Judge effective January 1, 2016. Huss felt this would allow more than enough time for the Judicial Nomination Commission and Governor Bullock to appoint a replacement. Huss’ resignation follows a sexual harassment complaint filed with the Montana Human Rights Bureau (HRB) in February 2014 by a former court reporter. Huss allegedly made unwanted romantic advances towards the female employee beginning in 2013, the same year he took office. Huss denied sexually harassing the woman. He attempted to resolve the dispute by entering an agreement entitling the woman to more than $744,000. The State Office of the Court Administrator (OCA) could be held responsible for the amount because Montana SEE HUSS, PAGE 8

By Lori Kesinger Herchel O’Connor has taught numerous students to study science and the value of being active. After 21 years as a kindergarten to 12th grade physical education teacher and seventh grade life science teacher for Plevna Schools, Herchel O’Connor is preparing herself for retirement when the school year ends. O’Connor was a substitute teacher for 15 years before she was employed in her current position in 1973. She also coached junior high girls basketball for 12 years during her tenure. “If it hadn’t been for school, I wouldn’t have learned computers,” she said. Over the years, O’Connor has worked with numerous coworkers. “I enjoyed working with them and having them as colleagues,” she said. SEE O’CONNOR, PAGE 8

Janice Ehret . . . By Lori Kesinger The head cook at the Plevna School will hang up her apron for the last time at the end of the school year. After working at the school for 34 years, Janice Ehret has decided it’s time to retire. One of only two positions in the school kitchen, Ehret started as the assistant cook in the fall of 1981. She worked alongside Peggy Vennes for about 32 years. Ehret has been head cook for the past few years with Connie Lang as her assistant. “Mrs. Charlie Neumann had the job for ten years,” Ehret said. “I thought I wouldn’t make it ten, now it’s 34 years.” Ehret’s work day has started about an hour earlier than the students. Many of the school’s food items have continued to be made from scratch. SEE EHRET, PAGE 8

Don Hinman, foreman of the Baker Public Works Dept., said the plowing was slow going because the snow was so wet and heavy. . . High temperature May 15 was 76 degrees. . . Whitney Meschke took first in the singles bracket at the Eastern B Divisional Tennis Tournament. Heidi Wang and Colette Kary won the doubles bracket. Lady Spartans who placed at the divisional tournament will now travel to Missoula May 19-21 to compete in the state tournament. . . Ben Susa will celebrate his 80th birthday May 22. . . J & M Lumber celebrated their second anniversary. Winners of their drawings were Don Wood BBQ, Bev Schell - ladder, Floyd Richmond - drill, and Gladys Morris - plant. . . The Plevna All-Class Dinner Theater was held May 16. The freshman class served a roast beef dinner to approximately 200 seated guests. . . St. Jude’s Bike-A-Thon held May 7. Participants raised $1,594.71 which will go to St. Jude’s Research Hospital. Joseph Fisher rode the most miles - 25, and Robert John Crow raised the most money - $448. 20 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 19, 1995 -Ken Griffith received a plaque in recognition of being chosen Montana’s AAU Outstanding Contributor for 1995. It was presented to him at the Little Sullivan banquet in Polson. . . John Brown bowled a 683 series during tournament play to successfully break a record which was held by Eldon Rasmuson for 25 years. . . 1995 Boys State delegates are Dana Quenzer, Gary Townsend, and Dustin Rudolph. . . Paul and Frances Zachmann celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary May 4 while at the 91st state convention of the Knights of Columbus. They were also honored as the 1995 Montana Knights of Columbus Family of the Year. . . Big 64 Bowling Tournament held May 10-13 at Baker Bowling Center. Winners were: 1 Russ Fischer, 2 - John Brown, 3 - Ron Siring, 4 - Tom Stevens, 5 - Pat Harrison, 6 Debbie Veroye, 7 - Scott Smith. . . Main Street Casino and Grill had a good turnout Apr. 14-15 for a fundraiser they held for John Michael Bertsch and Matt Mason. The boys will be going to Japan in July to wrestle. . . Baker Police Officer Patrick Knipp received the Fireman Award at the graduation ceremony of the 91st session of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Course held Feb. 26-May 5.

Neumann of Baker has formally been selected by the United States Military Academy, pending his medical, to begin training this summer. Jon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Neumann. . . Baker Men’s and Women’s Association Bowling Banquet was held May 11 with 144 attending. Master of ceremonies for the program were Steve Baldwin and Steve Fradenburgh. Vi Rasmuson was chosen by the Women’s Association as a “Star of Yesteryear”. Vi has bowled in Baker since 1959. . Kariann Shumaker is valedictorian for the class of 1985 in Plevna and Martha Johnson is salutatorian. 40 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 15, 1975-Coaches, lifeguards and assistants for the summer recreation program are: baseball Larry Moser with Todd Overton as assistant, Diane Moser will be in charge of the swimming pool with Harold Miller and Rena Alexander as assistants. The summer girls program will be headed by Diane Moser with Shelly McGhee as assistant. . . A welcome sight to many of the senior citizens of Baker was the “taxi” driven by Mrs. Jim Kono. This “taxi” is used several times a week to take patrons to the Center, doctors and run errands. . . New officers for the American Legion are: Commander Lawrence Schaefer, 1st vice commander Ed Bremer, 2nd vice commander Roger Singer, chaplain Ben Susa, Sargeant at Arms Gerald Bremer, post service officer Bill Bohle, and historian Vicky Gonsioroski. 50 YEARS AGO Thursday, May 13, 1965-Baker elementary schools reported an 84 percent turnout of parents at the second scheduled parent-teacher conference Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Breeden, Mrs. Burmeister, Mrs. O’Connor, Mrs. Schettler, and Mrs. Smeltzer had 100 percent parent attendance. . . . Poppy poster winners included Larry Jacobs, Mary Paula Young, Robin Kovash from Baker and Debra Bentley, Carolyn Manke, Carol Steffes, and Edith Wenz from Plevna. . . . Mayor Ronald Shepherd proclaims May 9-15 as National Hospital Week. . . Duane Bruce was promoted to Chief of Police at a special meeting called by Mayor Ronald Shepherd. . . Dear Editor: I lived in Baker and ran a business there in the late 1950s. At that time Baker was a neat, clean town and everyone took pride in their homes and yards. I recently spent a few nights in Baker and was appalled at how disgusting the town looks today. All four roads leading into town have piles of trash and junk cars. Dilapidated and fallen down buildings line the streets all over town. There are nice new homes next to trashed homes that have piles of junk and garbage in their yards and driveways. Baker has wonderful schools, a new hospital, a new courthouse, and has made wonderful improvements around the lake. Why doesn’t the city council and the county commissioners enforce your zoning laws and clean this mess up. I am looking for a place to invest some money but I have ruled out Baker. s/Duane Long

Miles Community College graduates

Britt Owens Funeral service for Britt Owens, 30, of Baker was held May 8, 2015 at the American Lutheran Church in Baker with Pastors Bruce and Reba Kolasch officiating. Burial was in Bonnievale Cemetery. Britt’s family received friends May 7, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. Britt passed away May 3, 2015 surrounding by his family at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., from heart failure. Britt William Owens was born Feb. 7, 1985, to Thomas and Pamela (Setinc) Owens in Miles City. When he was eight months old, Britt was diagnosed with Hurler’s Syndrome. To combat the short life expectancy that accompanies Hurlers Syndrome, Britt had a bone marrow transplant in 1988 from his twin sister, Breeann. The transplant was a success, as it allowed Britt to be a blessing to his family for over 30 years. Britt enjoyed growing up in Baker, attending school, and graduating from Baker High School in 2006. He went to work with his mom and sister every day at the Tavern. On the weekends, Britt would go out and stay with his dad on the ranch. He enjoyed road trips with his mom and Grandma Gwen. He was always excited to get out of town for

the day, even if it was for a d o c t o r ’s appointment. Britt loved being around family and friends. He always looked forward to gatherings for brandings, holidays, and special occasions. Britt’s family is very grateful for the countless caregivers who helped Britt over the last 30 years. He is survived by his parents, Tom and Pam, of Baker; twin sister, Breeann Owens, of Baker; sister, Angela Krieger, and her children Jada and Marcus of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, Kelly (Jodi) Krieger, and their children Kady and Voss of Coon Rapids, Minn.; grandmothers, Gwen Setinc and June Gillison, both of Baker; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Britt is preceded in death by his brother, T.J. Owens; grandfathers, Martin Setinc, LaVerne Owens, Bill Gillison; grandmother, Colleen Owens; great-grandmother, Vivian Celander. In lieu of flowers, Britt’s family suggests memorials to the American Lutheran Church. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.stevensonfuneralhome.com.

Fallon/Carter Spring Homemaker Council meeting will be held May 29 at the Baker Senior Citizen Center from 3-6 p.m. We have a great program lined up with Tracy Miller of Tracy Miller Catering and Wanda Pinnow with the Montana CattleWomen. Tracy Miller of Tracy Miller Catering LLC has been catering for family and friends for years. She truly has a passion for preparing desserts, entrees and side dishes. She is a native of Minnesota and only found Montana after living most of her adult life in Florida. Tracy went to culinary school in Florida at Brevard Community College. She found a slice of heaven in Glendive and couldn’t be happier doing what she loves. The community sees her as a true asset to the area. Knife Skills: Knives are a necessity for every kitchen.

Care and cleaning of kitchen knives will ensure they will last longer and perform the job they are intended to do. Tracy will share her tips and tricks for care, cleaning, slicing and dicing. She will also talk about selecting the right knife for the job. Grilling: Grilling season is just around the corner! Are you ready? Beef kabobs can be a great summer grilled treat. Tracy will demonstrate making marinade, putting the kabobs together and grilling them. She will address food safety concerns when handling raw meat and vegetables, grilling, and storing leftovers. Chamber news By Lori Kesinger Members of the Baker Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture met May 7 at Thee Garage for the monthly meeting. The Chamber almost met the fundraising goal for the downtown holiday decorations at the Ace Hardware open house with a gun raffle and food sales. Lisa Jourdan from Ekalaka contacted the Chamber earlier this year about an expedition map of the area for visitors and people attending the Sturgis Rally. Director Nicole Schuler and Mona Madler, SMART Director, are helping Jourdan with the map. It will include landmarks, points of inter-

est, town amenities, etc. Visit Southeast Montana awarded a grant for the project. The Chamber is scheduling the Funflatables and entertainment for the Fall Festival, but are needing donors to fund the efforts. Business Flamingo Flocking will begin next week. Proceeds will go towards downtown Christmas lighting and/or scholarships. Reports were received from Mona Madler, SMART; Karol Zachmann, Fallon Medical Complex/Friends of FMC; and Deb Ranum, Commission. The next Chamber meeting will be at noon Thursday, June 4, at Thee Garage.

Chamber strives to replace O’Donnell resigns as head wrestling coach after 20 years downtown holiday decorations

DICKINSON, ND- Long time head wrestling coach, Thadd O'Donnell, has decided to hang up his practice singlet and resign after 20 years at the helm of the Dickinson State University Wrestling program. "The decision to step down as the head wrestling coach was not taken lightly. I spent my adult life working in DSU wrestling program and trying to develop a program that Dickinson State University alumni can be proud of. In the 20 years I have had so many people help me become who I am today. I definitely would not have been able to accomplish anything without the total support of my family," said O'Donnell. "Tracie, Danielle and Seth were always part of the wrestling program. They gave their heart and soul to the program for me. I will never be able to thank them enough for the support they provided. Coaching is a roller coaster ride and they never bailed out," O'Donnell said about his family support. At the time of his resignation, O'Donnell is ranked third in most wins amongst active coaches. He ends his career with a record of 12272 and has been named Coach of the Year eight times. Under O'Donnell, the Blue Hawks have been named regional champions six times. At the national level, O'Donnell has coached 105 All-Americans while his teams have finished in the top 16 for all of his 20 years and has finished in the top 10 for 13 years as the head coach. O'Donnell's teams have finished in the top five in 2000 (4th), 2006 (4th), 2007 (3rd), and 2008 (3rd). "The coaching staff at DSU is without a question the best in the nation. It isn’t just because they are great in their respected sport but because of their support of all coaches on staff. I have never been in a position that I didn’t want to go into the office and never thought of my coaching as a job but more of a way of life. I have had the pleasure of working with a great number of coaches and assistant coaches in my time as a wrestling coach. I have learned from every one of them and without a doubt I will cherish the memories and always use our wrestling

"We appreciate Thadd for his longtime service not only to our wrestling program and athletic department but also to Dickinson State University," said Daniel. Coach O'Donnell will continue to be the chair of the physical education department, teacher, and head golf coach at Dickinson State University.

Through recent fundraising efforts, the Chamber almost reached the goal of $8,000. Most of the funds were raised during the Baker Ace Hardware Grand Opening through food sales and a gun raffle. Current funds raised for the holiday decorations are approximately $7,000. Numerous individuals and businesses generously sup-

Chamber set to Huss release flamingos on local businesses

By Lori Kesinger A flock of flamingos might appear at any store front in Baker beginning next week. Flamingo Flocking is a fundraising activity that began a few years ago when Nicole Schuler took over the helm at the Chamber. For the next month, the Chamber will randomly flock businesses with two flamingo signs in efforts to raise money to support the scholarship and holiday decoration funds.

If a business wants the flock removed and sent to another business, it must pay the Chamber a ransom fee of $20. A business can also pay $20 for each additional flock it would like to send to any other business.
