Schwartz retires after 22 years of service to 4-H youth By Sherry Vogel
4-H organizations of Fallon and Carter Counties bade farewell to Sharon Schwartz, 4-H assistant to the County Extension Agent, March 24 in the lobby of the Fallon County Courthouse. She ended 22 years of dedicated service to helping 4H youth to “Make the Best Better”. Sharon began her career in 4-H in January 1994 when she applied to fill the open position under Ellis Williams, Extension Agent. Born in Roundup and raised in Terry, Sharon graduated high school in 1972. She went on to attend college at MSU in Bozeman. The curriculum she took prepared her well for the career path she would choose working with children in the 4-H program. Through the years, Sharon has worked with thousands of kids. She marvels at how children, who had joined as elementary students, later blossomed into responsible young adults with a number of life skills in place due to their 4-H projects.
She remarked, “As the kids gained skills over the years, their parents’ faith in them grew. It was an amazing process to watch.” While the 4-H curriculum was under her direction, she helped to introduce the “Positive Choices” program to Fallon and Carter Counties in 1996. She feels this program is a very worthwhile outreach to area kids. She added, “Kids want to succeed. They want to be respected and to be loved. Kids are the same as all of us.” Sharon appreciates the community support she has gotten over the years. She commented on the wonderful 4-H leaders she has worked with, “Many of them even after their children were no longer in 4-H would often times continue to lead area clubs.” Upon a well earned retirement with 44 county fairs and 44 achievement nights to her credit, Sharon will enjoy going to her very first Fair Night Show ever. Sharon Schwartz ended 22 years of dedicated service to helping 4-H youth.
VFW meeting to discuss Vet van A meeting of Ekalaka VFW Post 7885 members has been set for Wednesday, April 13, to discuss the possibility of the post assuming operation of a veterans van. The van transports area veterans to medical appointments, mostly at the Veterans Administration (VA) Ft. Meade facility outside Sturgis, SD. The current van, which is operated by the VA, has not been operating for about three months reportedly due to recent administrative changes within the VA. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Church of Hank Williams on Morman Ave. in Ekalaka, April 13. Members are encouraged to attend. The Plevna Elementary team participated in the 5th grade girls division in the 14th annual Baker Jam April 2. The team consisted of 1st - 5th graders. Players were Madison O’Connor, Sophia Tudor, Lyann Gajeske, Jaiden Dulin, Jaeda Paul, Hayden Lane, Billie Jo Miller, Jordan Hauff, Ashtyn Arnold, Calli Hoenke, Kali Dulin, Brileigh Arnold, Avery O’Connor, Sara Tudor and coached by Sheila O’Connor.
MDU a founding partner in EPA’s Methanem Challenge Program Bismarck - Montana-Dakota Utilities, a division of MDU Resources Group, Inc., is one of the founding partners in the Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Methane Challenge Program provides a mechanism through which oil and natural gas companies can make and track ambitious commitments to reduce methane emissions. The program officially launched March 30, 2016, at the Global Methane Forum in Washington, D.C. The Methane Challenge Program provides a platform for partners to showcase their efforts to reduce methane emissions, improve air quality, and capture and monetize natural gas. Montana-Dakota and its sister utility companies will focus on excavation damages. “Excavation damage to our natural gas pipelines by third parties is a significant cause of our emissions and the main reason we are placing our focus on this area,” said Nicole Kivisto, president and CEO of Montana-Dakota. “Calling for locates before you dig will be a big part of our continued education and promotion in this area. We believe it’s important to be a founding partner in this voluntary program.”

Ron was acknowledged as the Southeast Administrator of the Year and also as a retiring superintendent for the state of Montana. . . High temperature was 78 degrees April 10. . . Fallon County has hired a second deputy sheriff. Trenton Harbaugh comes to Baker from Bozeman. . . Fallon County Commission will hold a public information meeting regarding the proposed construction of the addition to the Fallon Medical Complex consisting of Public Health, Parkview II, and Fallon Medical Complex Dietary. This addition will cost approximately $6.8 million. . . Over 350 youth on 44 teams participated in the fourth annual Baker Jam Basketball Tournament April 8-9. Twenty-six boys’ teams and 18 girls’ teams came to play ball. . . United Blood coordinators Adeline Bertsch of Baker and LaVerne Schell of Plevna attended the United Blood Services Celebrating Coordinators and Celebrating Life appreciation in Billings April 8. Adeline said it was mentioned that 100 percent of the blood drawn in Baker is used in Fallon County. . . Three Plevna residents have filed for two open trustee positions on the Plevna School Board. They are Dave Schuetzle, Rob Kono, both incumbents, and Scot Buerkle. . . Official opening of the Lakeview Country Club was held last Sunday. 40 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 8, 1976 -The dredging of Baker Lake began as a two and a half year, $210,000 project, but now it has all the possibilities of becoming a five year, $410,000 project, according to County Planner Tom Kelly. . . Deacons and trustees of the Baker Bible Church are shown breaking the ground in preparation for their new church that will be moved from Fallon and located on Fifth Street East. Jail Contract At an adjourned meeting of the board of county commissioners, July 6th, at which all members were present, the contract for the new jail was awarded to H.F. Griesy, the well-known local contractor. The contract for the heating and plumbing was let to A.C. Jasperson, of Baker, his bid being for 150 feet additional radiation in the court house. The Pauly Jail Building Co., St. Louis, Mo., were awarded the contract for the steel work, which includes the jail cells. Their bid, the only one received, was $4220. Griesy’s bid for erecting and completing the jail, except plumbing and heating and steel work, was, for a two-story building, $5620; for a one-story building, $3841.20. There were numerous other bids, most of them considerably higher, all of which were rejected because they were not received at the time specified by the board. Jasperson’s bid for the heating and plumbing, including 150 feet additional radiation in the court house was $3642 for one-story and $3904 for a two-story building. The St. Louis company will furnish four tool-proof cells, according to plans and specifications of Link & Haire, the architects, of Billings, and agree to have the same fully completed on or before Sept. 15th. Two sets of plans were submitted to bidders, one for a onestory building and one for a two-story building. The commissioners have concluded to erect a two-story building. Under the law they are limited to an expenditure of $10,000, or less, for a building of this character. ____________ : ____________
Minneapolis minister will permanently locate here Rev. H.L. Anderson, of Minneapolis, arrived here yesterday, and Saturday will be installed as pastor of the German Lutheran Church in this city. Sunday he will be inducted into the pastorate at Willard. Rev. J.O. Warburg, of Bowman, will conduct the ceremonies, which will be held at the Congregational Church at Baker. The new minister is a graduate of St. Olaf College; also of the U. G. Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minn. Later dates will be announced for Carlyle and Ollie. ____________ : ____________

Doris Benner Funeral services for Doris Benner, 81, of Baker will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Apr, 11, 2016 at the American Lutheran Church in Baker with Pastors Bruce and Reba Kolasch officiating. Burial will take place in the Carlyle Cemetery. A family receiving friends service for Doris will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 10, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. Doris passed away Mar. 31, 2016 at Fallon Medical Complex after a valiant battle with cancer. Doris Gertrude Benner was born Dec. 26, 1934, in Beach, N.D., to Otis and Ina Lutts. She grew up on a farm west of Carlyle along with her brothers and sisters. In 1954, Doris graduated from Baker High School. Shortly thereafter, Doris met a young man who was working on the threshing crew and the rest, as they say, is history. Doris Gertrude and George Benner were married Dec. 4, 1954 in Baker. To this union four children were born: Cecil, Gertrude, William and Emma. Doris had a dedication to her children like no other. She was first and foremost a “mom” and always made sure her children had what they needed. She learned the art of creativity and often made what couldn’t be bought. Doris had the gift of crocheting, sewing and knitting many of her children’s clothes. Much of her handiwork has been passed down to friends and family in the form of afghans, hats, Christmas stockings, and pillowcases. Doris was also an avid gardener and took great pride in her garden and flowers. She prepared many meals for family and friends from her harvest. Many hours were spent trying and creating new recipes for family gatherings. Doris was a lifelong learner and took to the internet to find
answers to cooking and gardening questions as well as keep in touch w i t h family. Doris a n d George spent 52 years together. They believed in the spirit of American values of hard work and family. They asked for nothing but were always there to lend a helping hand. Upon the death of her husband, Doris moved to the Parkview Complex where she spent many hours with her friends putting together puzzles, helping the residents and enjoying retirement. Doris loved her family and never forgot a birthday, anniversary or special occasion with a card and gift. Doris leaves behind her four children and their families: Cecil and Cheryl Benner, Gertie and Bob Baldwin, Willie and Penny Benner, and Emma and Frank Minnick. Grandchildren: Melissa Benner, DaNae Johnson, Brandon Baldwin, Tiffany Rose Benner, Leigha, Lisa and Loren Minnick; three great-grandchildren: Joshua, Jonathan and Joy Johnson; and sisters, Della Bunney and Louise Hochmuth. She was preceded in death by her husband George; her beloved twin sister Dora Kunda; brothers Bill and Russell Lutts; and Maxine Waymire. She also mourned the loss of her grandchildren Luke and Brian. The family would like to thank the staff and personnel of Fallon Medical Complex for their compassion and care the past few weeks of Doris’ life. Give Peace a Chance By Wade Sikorski Senator Steve Daines came to Baker, where I live, to talk about, as he put it, a “war on coal”. His visit was part of an energy tour leading up to an Energy Expo in Billings which he organized on behalf of the fossil fuel industries. As the days have passed and I have thought about what was implicit in what he said, I find myself increasingly disturbed by how he and other politicians, like Ryan Zine, Tim Fox, Greg Gianforte, and Donald Trump, are framing environmentalists. Global warming is an established fact. Climate scientists are just short of unanimously agreeing that it is not only happening, but is human caused and will become catastrophic if business as usual continues. Environmentalists, like myself, see ourselves as working for the noblest of ends, trying to leave today’s children a healthy world to live in. But, ignoring reality, politicians like Daines are rebranding our efforts as a “war on coal”. The more I think about it, the more I’m offended. The future is at risk, mostly because of coal, and the politicians who represent me are fighting a “war” to save coal, as if coal were a victim and the reality of global warming could be ignored without consequence. The “war on coal” isn’t a real war, obviously. It’s a metaphor, a strategy to draft recruits into an effort to discredit environmentalists. As such, the “war on coal” resembles other metaphorical wars we have been drafted into, like the “war on drugs”, the “war on cancer”, and the “war on terror”. All of these “wars” turned out to be just as expensive as any real war, and none of them have ended in anything resembling a victory. Like real wars, they all caused much suffering and wasted many lives, mostly because they were false to reality. Global warming will win the “war on coal” because it is real, and the “war on coal” isn’t. Metaphors help us interpret the world. By likening something to something else, we

understand it better. Metaphors can enrich our thoughts, deepen our reflection, revealing what was concealed, but they can also lock our thoughts up in prisons where they dictate what we think. By renaming the effort to stop global warming as a “war on coal”, Daines is trying to control our thoughts, concealing what climate scientists have long ago proven about global warming. A “war on coal” is a tempting metaphor for Daines to push his agenda because it stirs up anger, nurtures resentment, and conceals reality. But I doubt he has thought all the implications through. Daines and his friends seem to have forgotten that in war things get violent, and people are killed. And so, here is my worry: If Daines, Zinke, Fox, Gianforte and Trump keep pushing their “war”, eventually their followers are going to take it literally, and they are going to do what people in war usually do - assault, maim and kill. Starting a “war” works well for Daines. He feeds people’s anger because he wants to be their hero, their champion the guy who saves them from Obama, the EPA, and environmentalists. Because “war” works so well for him, my question is: will he slam on the brakes before his followers get too angry, stopping them before they become violent? Listening to Daines in Baker, I feel he has lost control of his metaphor. There are no brakes on the car he’s driving. We could easily end up, as in the other metaphorical wars we have been drafted into fighting, in a place none of us want to be. Maybe, instead of starting yet another “war”, Daines should give peace a chance. Wade Sikorski lives on the family ranch in southeastern Montana. He has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Massachusetts and is the author of several books, including Sacrificial Rituals.

The project for the day was to sew a project which would look like it had curves, but really had straight lines. We also brought our favorite quilt book. Jean Tronstad’s was Scrap Basket Surprises by Kim Brackett. Quilts, Quilts, Quilts by Diana McClun and Lauren Nownes was the favorite of Deb Barth, Neila Curry and Joan Grammond. Peggy Smith’s was Strip Smart Quilts by Kathy Brown. Gwen Miller brought a Patchwork Quilts magazine from March of 1986. Kay Webb brought Stash-Buster Quilts by Lynne Edwards. Jean Tronstad was the winner of the basket drawing and will bring the basket back next Tuesday with more goodies.
Show and tell items were: Neila Curry shared a little basket made from jeans, a Little Twister wall hanging, an embroidered snowman runner made by her sister to which she added borders. Gwen Miller shared two denim crazy quilts and her Valentine stitch and fold wreath, a small quilt using her Diamond in a Square blocks, her ironing caddy made into a purse, and a baby blanket of rectangles and stripes in pink plaid and rust sashings. Our project for April 12 is a fun and creative one. Each member drew the name of a geometric shape from a basket. She is to use the initials of her name to choose colors and make the shape she picked. For example: J - juice apple green, M - magical magenta, G - glamorous gray. Fire calls March 4, 2016, the Baker Fire Department answered a call on Cabin Creek Road north of Baker for a grass fire involving one-fourth acre. March 5, 2016, the Baker Fire Department took a call for mutual aid to Carter County for a grass fire involving 175 acres. March 8, 2016, the Baker Fire Department responded to a grass fire two and one-half miles west of Baker. The fire involved 2.7 acres. March 12, 2016, the Baker Fire Department responded to a grass fire on Battleship Butte Road north of Baker. This fire involved 30 acres. March 15, 2016, the Baker Fire Department answered a mutual aid request from the Marmarth Fire Department to assist with a grass fire 20 miles south of Marmarth. There were no city fire calls. • A burn ban is in place effective now until further notice.

2016 National Library Week Submitted by Stacey Moore, librarian The 2016 National Library Week theme is “Libraries Transform”. Ironic how we are in the midst of change here in our own little library world. If you’ve been in lately, hopefully, you noticed the new flooring and in June we will be doing some painting. The transformation so far has added a new and bigger reading and relaxation area, a children’s area, and a study
area within the same four walls. Patrons have said the changes give the library a completely new look and feel. During the week of April 11-15, 2016, we will be serving cookies and coffee, having give-aways, and drawings to celebrate National Library Week. National Volunteer’s Appreciation Week By Nicole Allerdings Fallon County 4-H Ambassador By participating in 4-H, youth develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility, and life skills. These accomplishments would not be attainable without the aid of numerous volunteers who dedicate their time to help 4-H members succeed. As a 4-H member for ten years, I am grateful for the guidance I have received from several devoted individuals. I would like to thank each and every volunteer who has impacted a 4-H member through their service. I would especially like to thank Carol Sparks for leading the Red Butte Ramblers club and supporting me throughout my ac-
tivities in 4-H. I would also like to thank my mother Jolinda Allerdings for encouraging me to participate in 4-H and being there to help me every step of the way. Several parents of 4-H members give of their time to assist with club activities, and I would like to thank them for allowing youth the opportunity to learn and grow through 4-H involvement. Other volunteers help members fill out record books, organize community service projects, and serve at the 4-H Food Booth during the fair. There are dozens of other ways volunteers contribute to 4-H, and I appreciate their investment in the future generation by supporting local youth.

The deadline to apply is Apr. 15, 2016. The Youth Serve Montana Scholarships reward students who have volunteered over 100 hours in the last year and who want to further their education in state. This year, 100 high school seniors across the state will receive $1,000 toward continued education at one of Montana Campus Compact’s public, tribal, private, or community colleges and universities. It is the eleventh year this scholarship opportunity has been made available for Montana students. State FFA Convention March 30 through April 2 nearly 1600 Montana FFA members, advisors, and guests visited Bozeman to participate in the 86th annual Montana FFA State Convention. Students traveled from over 94 communities across Montana to compete in career-oriented contests and be recognized for their accomplishments. The convention was a multi-faceted event that allows students ample opportunity to gain leadership and personal development skills, and constructively compete against their peers. Plevna FFA members and advisor Mr. Isaacs had a chance to interact in the Bozeman community through cleaning walking trails and fishing access during a “Day of Service”, tour a local alpaca ranch, and attend the convention tradeshow. Plevna FFA members also attended business sessions and competed in career development events such as Agronomy,
Farm Business Management, Livestock Evaluation, Sr. and Jr. Creek Speaking, and Greenhand Conduct of Meetings. Plevna students excelled in the following events: Agronomy - Plevna Team placed 5th out of 59 teams; individually, Dylan Sander placed 10th, Jacob Edgell 18th, Jessica Stockett 20th, and Jessica Paul 75th out of 220 individuals. Farm Business Management - Plevna team placed 11th out of 55 teams; Jessica Stockett placed 20th, and Dylan Sander 33rd out of 212 individuals. Greenhand Conduct of

Fourth grade birdhouses By Nicole Allerdings Mrs. Isaacs’ fourth grade class recently crafted birdhouses with the help of Jessica Stockett, Dylan Sander and Jake Edgell. Each student built a birdhouse with materials from a kit. They used a hammer and nails to attach the
pieces of wood. After the birdhouses were completed, the students painted them and attached a loop of string on top to hang them. The fourth grade enjoyed working in the shop and showing their creativity through this project.

Mid-Rivers Offers Higher Education Scholarships to Area Students Mid-Rivers Communications will award 35 $1,000 Higher Education Scholarships to students who will be attending a college, university or technical school as an undergraduate for the 2016-17 school year and have a parent/guardian who is a member of the Cooperative with active local telephone or Internet service. Twelve additional $500 scholarships will also be awarded at the MidRivers Annual Meeting on June 2, through a drawing of eligible students attending the annual meeting in Lambert. Thanks to the generosity of former Trustee Mark Robbins, an additional $1,000 in drawing scholarships will be awarded at this year’s annual meeting. To qualify for the annual meeting drawing, students must sign up at the annual meeting, must be accompanied at the meeting by a parent/guardian who is a Cooperative member with active Mid-Rivers local telephone or Internet service, must be enrolled to attend a higher education institution, and must provide documentation of full-time enrollment at the annual meeting. Application forms for the Mid-Rivers Higher Education Scholarships, to be awarded through the competitive application process, are available from any Mid-Rivers Customer Service office, from the counselor of any high school within Mid-Rivers’ service area, or online at: www.midrivers.com/scholarship/. Application deadline is Thursday, March 31, 2016. Selection for the Mid-Rivers Scholarship will be determined by April 30, 2016. Eligibility requirements for the competitive $1,000 scholarships are: • The applicant must be a graduating high school senior entering the freshman year of college, university or technical school, or a current college, university, or technical school undergraduate. Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student. Graduate students and previous Mid-Rivers scholarship winners are ineligible. • The applicant, or his or her parent(s) or legal guardian, must be a Cooperative member with active local telephone or Internet service from MidRivers. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Mid-Rivers to verify membership status at least 30 days in advance of the application deadline. have been completed and accepted by the Mid-Rivers Board of Trustees. • Student must complete the application form and its requirements, including a personal goals statement, a copy of the most recent transcripts, complete with ACT or SAT test score results, and two letters of recommendation from current teachers and one character reference letter. The completed application with all required attachments must be submitted, by mail to: Mid-Rivers Higher Education Scholarship, 213 W. Benham St., Glendive, MT 59330, or emailed to: mrcom@midrivers.coop by March 31, 2016 at 5:00 pm. A March 31, 2016, postmark will meet the application deadline requirement. The applications will be judged based on the following criteria: • 30% – Scholastic aptitude • 40% – School and community activities • 30% – Personal statement Scholarship certificates announcing the awards will be presented to recipients in May, in time for recognition during graduation or school award ceremonies if applicable. Scholarship funds will not be disbursed until Mid-Rivers receives proof of full-time enrollment in the college, university or technical school of the scholarship recipient. Once proof of enrollment is received, payment will be made by a joint check to the recipient and the school. Scholarships must be claimed by December 31, 2016, or the money will be forfeited. These scholarships are funded by the Mid-Rivers Fund for Education. Mid-Rivers is proud to be able to offer this $41,000 in scholarship funding to help Eastern and Central Montana students reach their higher education goals.
Red Cross asks for blood donations The American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to donate blood this spring to ensure a sufficient supply for patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals across the country. Donated blood is perishable and must constantly be replenished to keep up with hospital patient need. Red blood cells are the blood component most frequently transfused by hospitals and must be used within 42 days of donation. Eligible donors can give red blood cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. During a double red cell donation, two units of red blood cells are collected while most of the plasma and platelets are returned to the donor. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at

the donation appointment. Debbie Cody-Nabors is a blood donor who gives double red cells. Her mother received transfusions twice a week during treatment for aplastic anemia. “I donate blood as often as I can in memory of my mom,” she said. “Please donate blood if you can to help save lives as you never know when you’ll be on the receiving end.” Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with types O, A negative and B negative. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, up to six times a year, and double red cells may be donated every 112 days, up to three times per year. Election News AutoMARK Ballot marking system HAVA - Help America Vote Act required each polling place to allow voters with disabilities to mark a ballot privately and independently if they so choose. The AutoMARK is the ballot marking system the Secretary of State’s office has chosen to assist Montana’s voters with disabilities to mark a ballot independently. The AutoMARK can be used with a computer voice that will read the ballot, and a key pad with raised, shaped buttons, also these buttons are marked with Braille. In addition, the screen can be shut off if the voter would prefer to ensure the privacy of their ballot. The AutoMARK can also be used as a touch screen, with or without the computer voice. The AutoMARK is not a voting device, it is a ballot marking system only. There are no

The Commission decided the County will stay with their current provider, EMBS, as they were the lowest bidder. 14th Annual Baker Jam results The 14th annual Baker Jam was held at the Baker School gyms April 2-3. The youth basketball tournament drew 46 teams the two days. There were teams from Baker, Miles City, Glendive, Plevna, Forsyth, Ekalaka, Wibaux, Jordan, Sidney, Savage, Alzada and also from North Dakota Watford City, Golva, Halliday, Bowman, Arnegard, Scranton, Beach and Dickinson. April 2 The fifth grade girls division had seven teams broken up into two pools with the top teams of each pool competing for the championship. Three local teams were in this division: Plevna Elementary consisted of first through fifth graders, Pink Peacocks were fourth graders from Baker and the Spartans were a fifth grade team from Baker. Championship game: Bowman 15 vs. State Farm of Miles City 9. Fifth grade boys division had six teams in pool play. Local teams were Baker fifth grade and the Ballers were a mixture of second through fifth grade boys from Plevna and Baker. Championship game: Miles City Cowboys 30 vs. Glendive Mini Warriors 18. Sixth grade girls: 1st place - Dynamite of Bowman with 4-0 record; 2nd place - tie between Ekalaka, Baker and Jordan (Jordan awarded second place due to point differential among teams tied). Sixth grade boys: Championship game - Bowman County 33 vs. Baker Beasts 17. Call before you dig In an effort to remind us all about safe practices when digging, the non-profit Common Ground Alliance sponsors National Safe Digging Month every April. Montana Public Service Commission Chairman Brad Johnson delivers the following message to kick off National Safe Digging Month. “As spring projects get underway, I would like to remind Montanans that anyone digging take the proper precautions to ensure their own, and others’ safety. A quick call to 811 before you dig can save a life, and as April is National Safe Digging Month, it’s only appropriate that we spread awareness of this important tool. Safety when working near propane, natural gas pipelines and buried electrical lines is the number one priority, and calling before you dig should always be the first step before your shovel hits the ground.” What is 811? 811 is a national phone number established by the Federal Communications Commission to connect anyone who plans to dig with their local one call center. When someone calls 811 in the United States, he or she is connected to the local one call center where a representative collects information about the caller’s planned dig site. The one call center then communicates the information to the appropriate utility companies, which send professional utility locating technicians to identify and mark the approximate location of lines within a few days of the phone calls. Once lines have been marked, the caller may dig safely around the marks.
