Bulls, Broncs and Barrels draws huge crowd

By Sherry Vogel The house was packed at the Bulls, Broncs and Barrels Rodeo held Feb. 27. The indoor arena proved to be a valuable asset to the Fallon County Fairgrounds as this winter event got underway.

States represented were ID,WY, SD, ND, MT and NE. The day began with barrel racing which had 29 riders competing. Local cowgirls who participated this year were Rachel Brockel, Alycia Conroy, Tina Graham, Andrea Huft, and Alex Williams. Tina Graham and Alycia Conroy made it to the short-go. Winners were: First - Shelley Christianson of Sturgis, SD, second - Ashlyn Goven of Gillette, WY, and third - Tara Turbiville of Rhame, ND. Bailey Pro Rodeo contractors from Baldwin, ND provided some of the bucking stock. Twentyseven riders competed in bronc riding with Baker’s own Will Bagley among them. Local judge Pete Rising scored the rides, Randy Taylor, announcer, kept the crowd informed while clown Danger Dave entertained everyone. Winners in the bronc riding were Kendell Green of Terry and Lane Sterling of Buffalo, SD. The bull riding event saw 26 riders compete for prizes while bull fighters Tate Rhoades and local bull fighter, Sylvan LaCross, ensured no rider was maimed. The bull riding event was scored by averages and ranked as follows: first - Ryan Prophet, Twin Falls, ID; second - Jay Dunford, Baldwin, ND; third - Pat Johnson, Fargo, ND; fourth - Dakota Rice, Chadron, NE. Two calcuttas were held in the afternoon - one in Thee Garage Showroom while the other was held in the arena. These were both well attended and very successful.

Judge Nickolas Murnion replaced Judge Hess in 16th Judicial District

By Sherry Vogel Fallon County will have a new judge presiding in the 16th Judicial District Court, based out of Forsyth, starting March 17. Valley County Attorney Nickolas “Nick” Murnion has been appointed by Governor Steve Bullock to fill the judicial seat vacated by Judge George Hess.

Hess resigned as of January 1, 2016.

Murnion, a native of Jordan, will be taking up a new home in Forsyth. He said he likes Forsyth, and that it feels like a big city compared to his hometown of Jordan. Murnion was born in Jordan, graduated from Garfield County High School in 1971, then earned a bachelor’s degree in government at Montana State University. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Montana in Missoula in 1978. He then practiced law in Jordan for 30 years, both in private practice and as the part-time county attorney.

He has a diverse law background ranging from probate issues, real estate and parenting plans.

He played a prominent part in the prosecution of the anti-government group known as the Montana Freemen which erupted in 1996, leading to a 81 day stand-off with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As a result of the Freeman cases, Murnion received many awards including the Profile of Courage at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston in 1998 from Caroline and John F. FILES OF THE TIMES 10 YEARS AGO Friday, March 10, 2006 -March 6, the Baker Volunteer Fire Department was called to the John Lizer residence for a shed fire. Fire Chief Randy Hoenke said the shed was entirely engulfed when they arrived and the shed was totally destroyed. Lizer was using the shed as a dog kennel and a heat lamp fell on something that broke into flames. All animals survived. . With a 23-0 win-loss record, the Lady Spartan basketball team is on its way to the state tournament in Belgrade Mar. 9-11. Head coach is Clayton Hornung. . .

For the fourth year, Fallon County Times and other newspapers in the Country Media Corporation have sponsored a program to place newspapers in their local schools. Patchwork Quilt Guild News Submitted by Joan Grammond The Guild met at Thee Garage Feb. 16 with six members and one guest, Libby Barth, present.

Our project was the Fold and Stitch wreath under the direction of Linda Clark. It was a fun project.

We each brought our first or oldest quilt or quilting project to share. Peggy Smith shared a Row by Row and her row was of Nine Patches. Joan Grammond brought her black and magenta Log Cabin quilt made in 1990. Gwen shared a table runner she had made.

Linda Clark shared a creative curved runner featuring large poppies. Jean Tronstad’s quilt was made of polyester. Libby Barth made her first quilt in 2001 of various embroidered chickens. Deb Barth’s first quilt was a Sampler.

Other show and tell was Libby Barth’s stunning black, white and yellow full size quilt. Jean Tronstad brought an embroidered baby quilt bordered with number fabric.

She also had two batik applique wall hangings and a redwork of snowmen.

We decided to donate the Mile a Minute quilt made by Neila Curry to the benefit for John Williamson in Marmarth as he had a stroke.

We have been invited to share our craft projects at the Superior Care Villa Wednesday, Mar. 23, at 2:30 p.m.

Joan Grammond won the basket brought by Deb Barth of red articles for Valentines Day. Next month Joan will bring the basket back with surprise articles for the group to take chances on.

Our project for Mar. 8, 2016 will be to work on a project which uses straight line pieces to create the look of curves.

Jean Tronstad had samples of ocean waves and a heart. We are asked to bring our favorite quilt book.

Fallon County Timely-Tips

By Sherry Vogel I went to the post office the other day to find a seed catalog in my mailbox. It is a promising sign that spring is just around the corner. Although Montana is not the easiest place to grow flowers, with care, good maintenance, watering, staking and feeding you can have beautiful plantings in your yard.

Here is a tip to help you select spring plantings that are known to thrive in our area.

Hollyhock and Black Eyed Susan - plant from seeds and bloom all summer; Daisy plant from seeds or seedlings and bloom in the fall; Chrysanthemum - replant shoots and blooms late sum-

mer; Lily of the Valley - plant in the fall or spring and blooms in early summer; Prairie Smoke - seedling blooms July or August; Garden Phlox - seeds or seedlings, blooms all summer.

Most of these plants do well in a well-drained loamy soil high in organic matter and adequately supplied with nitrogen and phosphorus. Prepare soil by deep tilling to a depth of about 20 inches to encourage normally shallow roots to grow deeper. If soil is poorly drained, incorporate some coarse sand into the area at planting. Most of these flowers do best in a nearly neutral soil, but Hollyhocks and Iris prefer a slightly alkaline soil.

Typically, gasoline prices are higher than diesel fuel prices during the summer when driving peaks, and conversely diesel prices are generally higher during the winter when driving declines and the prices of heating oil (a fuel similar to diesel) increases, pulling up diesel prices. It’s definitely a supply and demand equation. This season heating oil demand has dropped due to warmer winter temperatures. Drivers are driving more this winter due to lower gas prices and good winter driving conditions.

In the United States, demand for diesel fuel tends to be more responsive than demand for gasoline due to economic conditions. Locally, a new refinery in Dickinson, ND, which produces only diesel fuel, has increased our local supply.

Red Butte Ramblers

Jeanette Dye Jeanette (Stark) Dye was born Oct. 22, 1934, on the family farm north of Baker to Hugh and Helen (Flohr) Stark.

(Dr. Tarbox arrived just 15 minutes before she did.)

Jeanette attended the one room Big Hill School, one half mile south of the farm, through the fifth grade. Her older brother, Jack, started high school then so she attended the Baker schools, graduating in 1952.

She worked for the telephone company in Baker for a short time and then went to Billings to attend college, also for a short time. She went into the secretarial field and in 1955 moved to Denver. From there she went to Japan for two years as a civilian secretary for the Air Force, returning to the States in 1959.

In 1960, Jeanette married Col. Fred Dye, an Air Force physician, in Cheyenne, Wyo. The following year they bought a future retirement home in the mountains near Jelm, Wyo., outside of Laramie, Wyo. In 1963, Jeanette and Fred were transferred to Clark AFB in the Philippines where they remained for three years. They were then stationed at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho until her husband’s retirement in 1972. They then moved to their home in Jelm.

Jeanette and her husband were instrumental in the major expansion of the Laramie Trap Club and she was an accomplished shooter. In 1976, Jeanette won the Frontier Handicap Championship, shooting 96 out of 100 skeet from the 20 yard mark. She was the first woman in the event’s 16 year history to win, topping over 100 men who entered. Later in the year, she won two state championships

at the Wyoming State Trapshoot, ladies doubles and ladies handicap.

Her husband, Fred Dye, passed away in early 1984.

Jeanette was the Albany County (WY) Republican chairman and was selected in 1984 to be a delegate to the National Republican Convention in Dallas. Through the years, she spent much time in Baker and on the farm to be with her mom and brother.

The farm was always “home” and where she wanted to be.

When her mom and brother passed away in 1996, the urge to move home grew stronger.

She sold her Wyoming place in April 2003 and made the move to Baker permanent.

Jeanette passed away Feb. 23, 2016, at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. In accordance with Jeanette’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.

Survivors include her stepchildren and spouses, Patricia Mariette of Albuquerque, N.M., Scott (Sandi) Dye of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jeff (Debbie) Dye of Albuquerque, N.M.; along with her loving, caring neighbors and dear friends, Doug and Randi Wenz.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother and husband.

Jeanette’s family suggests memorials to the Fallon Medical Complex or a charity of your choice.

2016 hunting licenses on sale Helena - Montana’s 2016 hunting and fishing licenses went on sale Feb. 1, under a new fee structure passed by the state legislature. Licenses will be available at all Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks license outlets.

This year hunters must purchase a new “base hunting license” that is a prerequisite to buying any state hunting license. The $10 resident license includes the hunting access enhancement fee that was charged separately for $2 last year. The new base hunting license was created in lieu of adjusting license fees for individual species.

A season-long Montana resident fishing license will increase by $3 this year to $21.

Fishing licenses will no longer be sold in combination with a conservation license - which is required for any hunting or fishing license purchase. The price of a resident conservation license will remain at $8 for all ages.

Under the new structure, most licenses that were free or discounted in 2015 will be charged at half of the standard license cost. Previously, free licenses or a variety of discounted prices were offered to some youth, seniors and disabled sportsmen. In 2016, only military recognition and block management cooperator combination licenses will remain free. FWP is reimbursed by the state general fund for military recognition licenses and block management cooperators providing hunting opportunities for all sportsmen.

Starting Feb. 1, the new fee structure will standardize the definition of youth as those between 12 and 17 years old.

This language replaces a number of age categories.

The price of all other resident tags, licenses, drawing fees and permits will remain the same as in 2015.

The installation where D.J. was serving was close to the Taj Mahal. He said the weather was extremely hot there. He and some friends made their own version of air conditioning, which included an airplane propeller and an electric motor. “It never made things very cool,” he said, “but it gave a breeze.”

Veterans of the Villa Delmar (D.J.) Jensen is a veteran of WWII. He was inducted into the service July 25, 1942. He completed his basic training at Fort Douglas, Utah, Aug. 8, 1942. Dec. 15, 1942, he completed the Army Air Force Technical School airplane mechanics course at Sheppard Field, Texas. Then on Jan. 19, 1943, he completed airplane mechanics B25 maintenance school in Inglewood, California.

In March of 1943 his mother received a letter from the AAF Technical Training Command in Atlantic City, NJ telling her her son was off the seriously ill list - having suffered a ruptured appendix and had been in the hospital for 90 days. As soon as he was totally recovered, he would be sent back to active duty. May 3, 1943, he departed to India and arrived there by boat June 21, 1943.

Flying home, he left Agra, India Aug. 20, 1945. He arrived in Miami Sept. 3, 1945.

He made stops in Karachi, India; Abadam, Nigeria; Cairo, Egypt; Benghaze, Libya; Tripoli, Libya; Casablanca, Morocco; Dakar, Senegal; Natal, South Africa, Belem, Brazil; Georgetown, Guyana; and Puerto Rico.

Delmar’s military occupations included aerial engineer - assisted airplane commander in the operation of a multiple engine airplane in flight by

maintaining a constant check on its mechanical functioning; airplane maintenance technician - in charge of changing engines on multiple engine transports.

The 1303 Army Air Force (AAF) Base Unit Air Transport Command (Agra, India) gave him authorization to wear these medals: Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Battle Star, Distinguished Unit Badge (a Presidential Citation), Good Conduct Ribbon, Army Air Force Technician Badge with Airplane Mechanic Bar, and four Overseas Service Bars.

The mechanics were required to fly four hours a month to keep their flight pay.

DJ went on several trips over the hump to China. These flights over the hump were very dangerous. He was reprimanded by his Commander for doing this sort of flying because “he was too valuable as a section leader”. He remembers a flight to an airport at Lajes, Azores which was built with the center of the runway 90 feet higher than either end.

They had to have a flagman at the center of the runway to direct the flow of traffic.

He was honorably discharged Nov. 17, 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

For old business, the club talked about Greytak calendars. All 4-H members and leaders need to pay dues.

There was a report on judging practices. The Black Hills Stock Show is coming up the end of Jan. The club also talked about the steer weigh-in and how it went.

For new business, the Foods Festival is Feb. 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Baker Senior Center.

Recipes are due Jan. 27. Fruit sales also begin Feb. 1. You can pick up your sheets from the Extension Office. Feb. 13 there is a beef workshop in Baker from 9 a.m. - 12 noon.

It is for members who need Market Quality Assurance and they are making rope halters.

Feb. 20 the Shooting Sports Invitational will be held in Baker. The committee for horse judging consists of Albert, Jenna, Andrea and Tylee.

We are making 12-15 May baskets. There will also be a council meeting Jan. 20.

The next meeting will be held Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. and hosts are Rieger and Thielens.

Dec. 12 was a holiday cooking workshop and nine attended.

The club voted that we are going to put on horse judging.

For new business, steer weigh-ins is Jan. 2, 2016 at 8 a.m. There will be a Market Beef Workshop at 9 a.m. for 4H members. We also need to sign the get well card for Sharon Schwartz. Livestock judging is held every other Monday in the courthouse basement conference room at 5 p.m. This year we have two members enrolled in cats.

Spring District FFA Contest held in Baker February 22-23, the Baker FFA Chapter held the 2016 Spring District Contest. A total of six teams attended the event. All teams gathered bright and early at the Fallon County Fairgrounds exhibit hall. Teams that participated were Baker, Plevna, Carter County, Miles City, Broadus, and Forsyth. Teams participated in events such as Sales and Service, Agronomy, Floriculture, Farm Business Management, Mechanics, Parliamentary Procedure, Extemporaneous Speaking, Creed Speaking, and Prepared

Public Speaking.

Top ten placings from Baker included Isaac Nemitz - 1st Mechanics contest; Bo Rost 9th - Agronomy contest; Kaylin Wheeler and Scotti Robinson - 8th and 10th Farm Business Management.

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest winners The District Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest was held in McGonigal Gymnasium at Baker High School. Plevna FFA chapter attends Spring Districts

By Jessica Stockett February 22-23, Plevna FFA traveled to Baker for Spring Districts. Feb. 22, the agronomy team and Creed speakers left at noon to compete. In agronomy, the team consisting of Jessica Stockett, Jessica Paul, Dylan Sander and Jake Edgell placed second. Individually, Dylan placed second, Jake - fourth, and Jessica - eighth.

In Creed Speaking, Jessica Paul placed first while Taylor Bertsch placed second in Jr. Creed Speaking.

Feb. 23, Mechanics, Farm Business Management, Floriculture and Parli Pro competitions occurred. In Farm Business Management, the team consisting of Jessica Paul, Jessica Stockett, Dylan Sander and Jake Edgell placed first. Individually, Jessica Stockett placed first, Dylan Sander - second, and Jessica Paul

- third.

In Floriculture, the team consisting of Trinity Rieger, Ashley Sander, Jessica Paul and Taylor Bertsch placed first. Individually, Taylor placed first, Ashley third, Jessica - fourth, Trinity - seventh, Dacy Buerkle - 14th, Jenna Paul - 15th, and Taylor Rieger - 21st.

In Junior Parli Pro, the Plevna team took first. Placing in the top ten on the Senior Parli Pro test were Ashley Sander - fourth and Taylor Bertsch - fifth.

The Mechanics team consisting of Dylan Sander, Chris Skogas, Jake Edgell and Jessica Stockett placed fourth as a team. Individually, Dylan placed 11th, and Chris - 15th.

The teams are looking forward to competing at state. Congratulations to the Plevna FFA teams.

Taste of Reading at Parent/Teacher Conferences

By Nicole Allerdings February 23, elementary students participated in some special activities after school while their parents visited with teachers.

First, Mrs. Stickney taught the students about diversity. With the help from Isaiah Prather, she asked the students to think of some similarities and differences she shared with Isaiah. Some similarities were they both have dark, curly hair and wear glasses. The students listed several differences as well, including the fact that Mrs. Stickney is a teacher and Isaiah is a student. Mrs. Stickney is a female and Isaiah is a male, and Mrs. Stickney has light skin and Isaiah has darkskin. Mrs. Stickney explained that even though she and Isaiah are different, they should still be treated with equal respect.

The students watched part of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and then colored booklets portraying ideas mentioned in the speech. Following this activity, students spent time reading at several different “picnic” spots. They were nonfiction, fiction, fable, poetry, fantasy and mystery stations.

The fifth grade class also presented posters and shared parts of books they recently read. Students were also able to view movie trailers the sixth grade class made using an iPad app.

Several books were given away, and students were able to read to their parents at the various stations. These activities were a great way to encourage children to read.

Second graders bring book characters to life

By Nicole Allerdings February 23, Mr. Wolters’ second grade class presented special book reports to the class. Each student chose a character from his or her book and dressed up as that person.

The students took turns sharing their books from the viewpoint of their chosen character.

They introduced themselves and described their character.

Then they gave a summary of the plot of the book from their chosen character’s perspective. Hugo Thielen portrayed Jack from the Magic Tree House series book entitled “Night of the Ninjas”. Turk Rieger shared the story of Flat Stanley in “The African Safari Discovery”. Weston Buerkle dressed as Freddy and told about his adventures in “Secret Santa Surprise”. Tyler Gajeske also portrayed Freddy in the story “Tooth Trouble”.

Michael Goben shared Freddy’s activities from the book “Apple Orchard Race”.

The Commission made and approved the motion to change County Policy to state retiree coverage will be offered to all individuals who retire and are at least 50 years old and have been employed with the County for at least 5 years in accordance with MCA 2-18704-1 effective January 1, 2016. No decision was made regarding the discount program.

Julie Straub joined the meeting to report she has received one application for the Senior Citizen Substitute Bus Driver position who has several years experience driving bus. Carla Brown, Council of Aging Director, would like to hire her and the Commission gave their approval.

Julie told the Commission the background check for the County Advisor applicant they would like to hire came back good and the Commission said they will make the job offer.

Baker resident receives touching memorial

By Sherry Vogel Much to the surprise of Baker resident Angel Wyrwas, she was honored with a beautiful Pendleton blanket during Senior Parents’ Night at the boys’ and girls’ basketball games in St. Labre Feb. 13, 2016. St. Labre girls’ basketball player, Shiloh McCormick, presented the blanket to Angel in honor of her grandmother, Nora Ann Little Light Bird, who passed away in 2009 after a two year fight against breast cancer.

To honor the memory of McCormick’s grandmother, the family chose to honor a breast cancer survivor from the Baker crowd. “Shiloh is really missing her grandmother during this time,” explained one of Little Light Bird’s sisters. “In our community,” shared McCormick, “the grandmother takes the first born granddaughter in like her own child. She raised

me, we were inseparable.”

During the senior presentation, blankets were being wrapped around people who were important in McCormick’s life. “It reminded me of when I was diagnosed,” said Wyrwas. “People loved me with quilts and blankets.

There is so much symbolism in being wrapped.” Then St. Labre announced they would like to honor a breast cancer survivor. “The Baker crowd all kind of turned and looked at me … I suppose because my fight has been very public,” said Wyrwas, “but since I know the number of occurrences is so high I was wondering how many others in the crowd are survivors as well.”

Wyrwas said the experience was extremely moving and overwhelming. “My husband and I both cried and we were joined in tears by many of our friends in the Baker crowd.”

Erika Rayne Rost Jay and Linda are honored to announce the arrival of their daughter, Erika Rayne Rost. Erika was born Jan. 16, 2016, at 1:21 a.m. at Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City. She weighed 6 lbs. 13 oz. and was 19 1/4 inches long. Big brother Lukas and big sister Rye Lynn were thrilled to finally meet her.

The project consists of removing and replacing topsoil, excavation, installation of reinforced concrete box culverts, furnish and installation of listed items, and incidentals.

The cost downloaded (electronic) plans is $20. The official Plan Holders list can be viewed for the project on the QuestCDN website.
