Missoula Children’s Theatre - “The Pied Piper” Baker students took to the stage Feb. 28 to perform in the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of “The Pied Piper”. The students spent the week rehearsing under the direction of Allison McCarthy and Mandi Corrao.
The directing team arrived with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up, everything it takes to put on a play - except the cast. The team held auditions and cast only local students, grades K-12, to perform in the original adaption with a modern twist.

City of Baker replaces older garbage truck By Lori Kesinger The City of Baker will roll out a new garbage truck this month to replace the older model in disrepair. With a new truck to serve neighborhoods, city leaders are urging residents to comply with rules to alleviate repairs and extend the life of the truck. Only bagged garbage should be placed in the tubs with the exception of cardboard, two foot by
two foot or smaller. Garbage on the outside of the tubs will not be picked up. Public Works Department personnel will pick up garbage spilled when dumping the tubs. The following items should not be placed in the tubs: construction materials, metal, tires, appliances, furniture, large electronics, large wood products or pallets, trees or branches. Those items can be hauled to the container site east of Baker
on Coral Creek Road. The County lifted container fees last year, so no charges are incurred when using the container site. The container site is open for use Wednesdays and Saturdays (excluding legal holidays) May 1 - October 31, 10:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. and November 1 - April 30, 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. on March 9, the Fallon County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull over a small, dark-colored, two-door, passenger car driving erratically. The vehicle failed to pull over and continued to drive south on Airport Road with speeds in excess of 90 mph at times. The pursuit was called off for safety reasons due to the speed on the gravel roads. The Baker Police Department also assisted in the call. The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information should contact the Fallon County Sheriff’s Office at 406-778-2879.
Eisele chosen as new Fallon County Undersheriff By Lori Kesinger
Nic Eisele was named the new Fallon County Undersheriff by newly-elected Sheriff Trent Harbaugh and began his service Feb. 10. Eisele spent most of his life in Virginia. He was classically trained in music but became dissatisfied with the selfish endeavor. Eisele sought a new career path that would make a difference. Contact with a friend in Bozeman led him to pursue law enforcement in Montana. Eisele attended the Montana Law Enforcement Academy with Baker Police Sergeant Justin LaCroix. Prior to joining the Fallon County Sheriff’s office, Eisele served two years at the Pine Hills Youth Correctional Facility in Miles City, one year with the Custer County Sheriff’s Office as a detention officer, and about three years with the Miles City Police Department as an officer. “I was really fortunate in Miles City,” Eisele said. “I worked closely with Captain Prell at the Miles City Police Department to really hone

my investigations. My forte was drug interdictions and traffic - a lot of success in getting meth off the streets.” No stranger to small towns, Eisele’s name was brought up in January for the undersheriff position. Eisele attended the law enforcement academy with Baker Police Sergeant Justin LaCroix. “It was really humbling to even be considered,” Eisele said. “I really wanted to get back to my roots with working with detention. With the Sheriff’s office, you have to maintain the jail alongside patrol duties.” Eisele will handle daily operations and stand in for Harbaugh when he’s gone. Eisele and his family will move to Baker permanently after closing on a home. “I’m excited to be here and look forward to serving the community,” Eisele said.

Laura Beach, a junior at Baker High School, was selected as the number one basketball player in the 3B conference. Marnee Overton, a sophomore at BHS, was chosen as number three. . Shann Schillinger, a senior at Baker High School, was selected number three in the Southeast B Conference and is also an “All State” player. . . Baker Volunteer Fire Dept. quickly responded to a garage fire at 418 S. First St. West. Fire Chief Randy Hoenke said the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette. The garage sustained approximately $1,000 worth of damage, and the car in the garage had an undetermined amount of damage. . . Four teachers at Baker Schools have submitted their resignation opting for the retirement incentive offered. They are Gail Kramlick, Robert Curry, James Schillinger, and Gigi Nance. . Plevna Volunteer Fire Dept. was called to a fire at Marvel Murphy’s barn Mar. 13. Kalyn Bohle, one of the firemen, said the barn was completely destroyed. . . Clarence and Dolores Schell will celebrate their 50th anniversary Mar. 26. . . . Corps of Engineers gave permission to resume the work concerning the clean up work at Baker Lake. The Commissioners need to fill out some applications for the Corps to fulfill federal guidelines and no fines were assessed on the work already completed. . . Feb. 12, Tom McGonigal was recognized for having volunteered his time and effort for 30 years to the Hunter Education Program.
40 YEARS AGO Thursday, March 13, 1975Citizens of Baker will be pleased to know that Baker has been given a class five rating for fire prevention compared to a class six in previous years. . . Three boys were given the Eagle Scout award recently and include David Breitbach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Breitbach; Barry Bechtold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benny Bechtold; and Tim Mahon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mahon. . . An independent basketball tournament was held Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday of last week. An all-tournament team was selected with Boggs and Curry selected from Ekalaka, Steve Stickney from Plevna, Pete Herbst and Don Dilworth from Baker. Mike Knopik was selected as the Most Valuable Player. . . Bing Bakken, local fire marshal, has been chosen to be a pit fireman at the Indianapolis 500 this Memorial Day weekend. 50 YEARS AGO Thursday, March 11, 1965Fallon County residents were shocked and saddened by the untimely deaths of two young Plevna men early Sunday morning. Killed in a two car accident on their way home from the basketball tournament in Miles City were Robert Ehret, 25, and Robert Wellenstein, 27. . . Ronald Shepherd filed for the position of Mayor of Baker Friday, Mar. 5. . . Mrs. Russell Culver from the American Lutheran Church; Mrs. Arthur Buerkle, president of the Plevna Congregational Church; Mrs. Karl Wenz and Mrs. Valdene Bowen led the World Day of Prayer service at the Baker Community Church Friday evening. 60 YEARS AGO Thursday, March 17, 1955Miss Bonnie Colbo returned recently from a safari to Africa which was of several weeks duration and included many exciting experiences. . . Floraine Geving Funeral services for Floraine Geving, 94, of Plevna will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Mar. 13, 2015 at the American Lutheran Church in Baker with Pastors Bruce and Reba Kolasch officiating. Burial will take place at Bonnievale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m., Thursday, Mar. 12, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. Floraine passed away Mar. 8, 2015 at Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. Floraine Wilson was born May 12, 1920, in Ismay, the daughter of Cliff and Pearl (Vanderdort) Wilson. Dr. Carrie and midwife Sadie May assisted in the birth. Floraine spent her school years in the Ismay school system, graduating from high school in 1938. She spent the next year doing odd jobs. April 17, 1939, Floraine was united in marriage to Bennie Geving in Miles City. After the wedding, the couple moved to the Geving farm near Plevna. Floraine and Bennie welcomed two sons to their family, Craig Richard and Roger Owen. After Bennie passed away in
2005, Floraine remained on the farm until 2010, at which point she moved into Quality Personal Care. In 2013 she moved into Fallon Medical Complex Long Term Care where she has lived ever since. She was a true caregiver, spending most of her life caring for various members of her family as they battled medical illness. Faith was very important to Floraine. She was also known as the “Community Grandmother”, watching out for all of the neighborhood children. They rarely left her house without a meal or snack. Floraine will be remembered for her warm and welcoming personality that brightened everyone else’s day. Floraine is survived by her son, Roger. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 66 years, Bennie; son, Craig; and one sister. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.stevensonfuneralhome.com.

Old business that we discussed was the Shooting Sports Invitational and a report was given by Donnie Steen. 4-H Counselor applications due March 10 and can be picked up at the Extension Office. Rilee Pettersen gave a report on the cooking workshop that
was held Feb. 28 in the exhibit hall. MT 4-H Rec lab will be held in Livingston Mar. 27-29 and the deadline to sign up is Mar. 16. New business that we discussed - the Fallon County 4H Foods Festival will be held Mar. 22. Mar. 30 fruit money is due. Mar. 18 fruit will be delivered to the county shop. Tannon Dukart moved to adjourn the meeting, and Terrell Koenig seconded it. The next Country Pals 4-H Club meeting will be Apr. 12. Dennis Koenig came and thanked the club for releasing the balloons at Faye Koenig’s memorial service.

Schuler also received a quote from Funflatables for the Fall Festival. She will reserve the inflatables for the festival in September. March Chamber news By Lori Kesinger Members of the Baker Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture met March 5 at the Tavern for the monthly meeting. A committee was appointed earlier this year to address the Chamber’s outdated by-laws. The committee is continuing to work on the revisions. The Chamber will make a final decision on downtown Christmas lighting before the end of March, including number of decorations and type. Members agreed to pursue the opportunity for fundraising during the Ace Hardware open house in April with a gun raffle and food sales. Funds raised will go towards the Christmas lighting. The Chamber sponsored Home and Garden Show will be April 17-18 at the Exhibit Hall. Show hours will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Chamber members are encouraged to volunteer to

Fallon County Ag in Montana Schools winners AMS once again brought the Show Me and Teach Me About Montana Agriculture Design Contest to Montana’s elementary school children for 2015. Each county participating chooses a winner for each grade and each category which is submitted to AMS. One state winner is chosen from each grade and one overall winner chosen from the previous year’s winners or best overall drawing. Winning entries are then printed on placemats and other items. Placemats are distributed to school cafeterias and restau-
rants all across Montana. Fallon County educators in grades 2-5 each year have had their classes participate. the process go through the State Department. The State Department and other federal agencies will continue with the national interest determination on the pipeline. President Obama indicated in an interview that the decision on the pipeline would be made before the end of his administration - within weeks or months. TransCanada is confident the decision will be made as said. Five environmental studies have stated there would be no
significant environmental impact in building the pipeline. If the permit is not received, TransCanada will seek possible alternatives. TransCanada has continued to complete state permitting. It has also obtained 100 percent of easements in Montana and South Dakota, 87 percent in Nebraska. In Anderson’s personal opinion, the decision would be made in June or July, fall at the most. His optimism remains 50/50 on the pipeline being built.

Boys and girls in six age groups from 9 years old to 14 years old competed in shooting 15 free throws. Winners at the Council level traveled to Miles City Feb. 22 to compete in the KC District Contest. Fourth grade fifty states project By Nicole Allerdings Mrs. Isaacs’ fourth grade class recently studied the 50 United States. Each student chose a state and researched topics such as the state symbols, population, when the state was admitted to the Union, state motto and nick-
name, and physical features of the state. The students displayed the information they found on a poster and also created a 3-D model of their chosen state with clay. They designed a brochure detailing the tourist attractions and unique aspects of
their state. Finally, the fourth graders drew timelines pinpointing important events in each state’s history. The students enjoyed learning about a state they were interested in and showing their creativity by completing this project.

being 100. The students used their imaginations to describe how they think their lives will unfold, and the things they will do in the future. They wrote down their
stories and used an app to see what they would look like at 100 years old. This project was a unique way for students to envision their potential.
February 28, several Plevna students in grades 6-11 traveled with chaperones to Deer Mountain in South Dakota to ski or snowboard. This trip was organized and sponsored by the Student Council.

Jo Nasvik Art Mobile exhibition By Nicole Allerdings February 26, Plevna School was visited by the Art Mobile. All students K12 were able to view several paintings, sculptures, drawings, and other works of art. Jo Nasvik travels to schools all around Montana to showcase art created by Montanans. She explained the purpose and ideas behind several of the exhibits, describing how each work of art was either traditional or contemporary. A favorite sculpture, which students could interact with by winding a crank, represented the game of “rock, paper, scissors”. Jo gave each student a small square of paper and asked them to draw a happy thought on it. She shared that she plans to construct a house out of all the “happy thoughts” she collects from

Red Butte Ramblers 4-H Club By Emily Shumaker The fifth meeting of the Red Butte Ramblers 4-H Club was called to order by President Nichole Allerdings, at the Plevna Senior Center on February 8, 2015 at 3 p.m. The American Pledge was lead by Whitney Thielen and the 4-H Pledge was lead by Wyat Thielen. Roll call was answered with your favorite candy. There were 23 members present. Secretary Emily Shumaker read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved as read. Caleb Ploeger read the treasure’s report. For old business the club asked if everyone had turned in their Greytak calendar money to the treasurer. Also the club discussed the work on the road signs and that the club would work on one after the meeting and which sign to work on next. The skating report on the January meeting was brought up. Carol Sparks talked about the leader training which was in January about the via e-session and that the next one was on February 12 with Temple Grandin at 7 p.m. Nichole Allerdings talked to the club about January 31, Fun Day. For new business the club asked members who attended

the beef weighing how it went. Also that fruit sales are due on February 27. The club also discussed that 4-H camp counselor applications are due March 10. The club also said that horse members need to remember to watch the helmet video. To find out more you would have to contact the Extension Office. Also, on February 9, there will be a Baking Basic Workshop at 5:30 p.m. at the Baker Senior Citizen Center. Members, as well as any adults in our community, are welcome to attend. On February 28, there will be a 4-H cooking workshop for the Easter holiday. This event will be held at the Exhibit Hall. Cost for attending will be $10. On February 11, there is a small projects judging at 6 p.m. at the Exhibit Hall with taco supper provided. The club also reminded everyone to bring their record book to every meeting. The next meeting will be on March 22 at 3 p.m., prior to the foods festival. The hosts are Riegers and Tudors. After the meeting, there will be a cookie workshop. In addition members will be filling out their record books while other members will work on the road signs.

Legislative update By Sen. Matt Rosendale This was a short week at the Capitol as we did not begin work until Mar. 8. Jean and I were absolutely delighted to spend last weekend back in Glendive on the ranch. After wrapping up business on the 45th legislative day, the legislators took the historical transmittal “break”. I never did quite get the concept of that as we legislators from eastern Montana really don’t get much of a break. Typically, we spend one day driving home, two days visiting constituents and one day driving back. I was able to sneak a little time in hiking around the ranch. The mild weather (14 degrees) made it quite nice. While we were home, I was able to attend a Lincoln Reagan dinner in Glendive and another in Sidney. That gave me the opportunity to visit with many of our neighbors and it was great to see everyone. Monday, Mar. 2, I stopped at KXGN in Glendive and did a radio interview with Emilie Boyles, the news director. Once I returned to Helena it was full speed ahead. The first order of business was a meeting with Hank and Tad True, owners of the Bridger Pipeline Company. They offered to travel to Helena to visit and I immediately took advantage of the offer. We had a very candid conversation about energy development and the benefits it offers Montana. However, we also discussed in great detail the legislation that I put forward to disclose
FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2015 pipeline information online (SB 368) through the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and improvements that industry could make to reduce the potential for future pipeline fractures and oil discharges into the Yellowstone River. The True family has begun a program of analysis and replacement of pipeline crossings not only on the Yellowstone, but on all rivers. They have begun a program of directionally drilling these crossings so they may place the pipes much further beneath the flowing river. The proposed replacement for the Glendive crossing which recently broke will have no less than 30 feet of coverage. I am working with industry groups and producers to put additional safeguards in place in the very near future. I have learned that the state can react much faster and more effective than the federal government. I was quite disappointed to see Gov. Bullock vetoed HB 166. This was a bill which was passed through the House and Senate and placed on his desk early to provide approximately $54 million a year in tax relief to the citizens of Montana. Typically, the Legislature waits until the end of the session to pass tax relief and school funding. That causes anxiety in the education community and because of all the revenue has been appropriated, we are told there is no room for tax relief. This time it is different. We already passed the general funding legislation for education and a tax relief bill before everyone had an opportunity to spend all
of your money. Now the governor tells us that it is irresponsible to propose a $45 million tax cut before the revenue estimate has been established. We proposed it late and there is no money left. We propose it early and it is irresponsible. That leaves one to wonder, what does that make the $400 million pork barrel spending package the governor has proposed? There are several more tax relief bills making their way through the process so we can only hope the governor will sign one before the session concludes. I am a firm believer that “you” know how to spend your money better than any legislative body. With over $350 million in ending fund balance, surely some of that is better utilized in your bank account than in Helena! Legislative news By Sen. Eric Moore Halfway through the 90 day session, the legislature has seen amazing progress for the state of Montana, completing several important tasks over the first eight weeks. There is still much to accomplish before we are done in Helena, but the first 45 days were full of excitement and progress. Before I left town for transmittal break, many people around the capitol asked me what accomplishment over the first 45 days I was most proud of. After giving it some thought, I realized the most significant accomplishment thus far has been the civility and productivity of the entire legislature. In sessions past, the ugly side of politics frequently surfaced in our legislative process. This session has been different, and many members on both sides of the aisle agree there is a different tone this year, with productivity and cooperation much apparent. Aside from the efficiency and civility of the session, we have also approved several significant proposals that improve the quality of life in our state. Among the most significant accomplishments of the leg-
islature thus far is the approval of the state’s K-12 funding for the next biennium. Members of the education community largely agree that funding for Montana’s schools has not been approved this early in quite some time, and early approval of the funding package allows local educators much more time to set their budgets for the next two years. Another important accomplishment of the session so far was the approval of HB 166, a bill to provide over $40 million a year in income tax relief to the people of Montana. The bill passed both chambers with nearly unanimous Republican support, and now awaits Governor Bullock’s signature to become law. Republicans in the legislature know that promoting a favorable business climate through low tax rates is the best way to ensure a strong economy, and HB 166 is a fantastic first step. We still have a lot of work ahead of us over the next two months, but I am certain the legislature will leave Helena in April having improved life in our state for all Montanans.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, imposing a terrible toll in health, lives and dollars on families, businesses, and government. Tobacco kills 480,000 people annually - more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. Tobacco costs the U.S. approximately $170 billion in health care expenditures and $151 billion in lost productivity each year. While the United States has made major progress against tobacco use, nearly one in five Americans still smokes, and more than 2,800 kids try their first cigarette each day.
