Military aircraft exercises scheduled over Baker By Sherry Vogel Ellsworth Air Force Base, SD, has just released information to the public that all residents living in the Powder River Training Complex region should be advised that the PRTC will be carrying out a large force exercise of military aircraft scheduled for March 30-31. Fallon County is located in military operations area Powder River #3. During this period, people living in this area can expect to see
multiple types of aircraft utilizing the airspace simultaneously. This exercise is designed to train aircrew under realistic scenarios that support full spectrum operations against modern threats and replicate today’s contingency operations. This type of training is limited to ten days each year with each exercise lasting no more than three days. These events will only occur once each three month period, as
separated into January through March, April through June, July through September, and October through December. The new PRTC officially opened Sept. 17, 2015, upon its charting by the FAA, and military flying operations began Sept. 18, 2015. This will be the second LFE for the PRTC and this news release serves as the official public notification of the event.

ABC Plus newest business in Baker ABC Plus is the newest business in Baker, providing windshield, glass, chip and machine repair. Del and Melanie Espinosa, owners of ABC Plus, also own the NAPA store, Precision Parts and Supply. The new business is located at 125 1st St. W. in Baker and their hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. 6 p.m. Del is a journeyman machinist with 40 years experience. He performs industrial and ag machine work and repairs including lathe work, milling work, pump and valve repair. He also does DOT annuals and repairs on commercial vehicles. In addition to the machine work, Del is doing windshield replacement and chip repairs on trucks, pickups and cars. He will work with insurance companies to file glass claims. Del recommends getting glass chips fixed as soon as possible and try to keep them from getting wet or dirty, even suggesting putting a piece of scotch tape over it until they can be repaired. Espinosa also handles equipment style flat glass for replacement in tractors, skid steers and loaders. Del and Melanie have lived in Baker for close to 20 years and have three grown children, Crystal Varner who lives in

By Sherry Vogel Baker Rexall Drug welcomes Alyse Webber, Pharm. D., to the team as a pharmacist. She and her husband Matthew come to Baker from St. Louis, Missouri. Although not natives of St. Louis, they were employed there before making the move to Baker in late January. Alyse was employed as a pharmacist for Dierberg’s Pharmacy, a grocery store chain in St. Louis. Alyse earned her Doctorate of Pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy, graduating in May 2014. She chose to major in healthcare because her older sister became mentally and physically handicapped, around six months old, as a result of an adverse reaction to her DPT vaccine. Alyse grew up attending her sister’s medical appointments and took note of how medicine improved her quality of life. At her step-father’s suggestion, she chose to major in pharmacy. Alyse wants to help provide quality of life to others. She said, “I like to help people optimize their therapies and help them identify gaps that may improve their lives.” She then added, “I am an advocate for annual vaccination and hope to begin providing convenient vaccination opportunities at Rexall in the future.” The Webbers were both raised in small towns. Alyse hails from DeSoto, Mo. (population 6,000), and Matthew from Rock Falls, Ill. (population 9,200). The couple, newlyweds, were married Aug. 31, 2014. Matthew, a professional ferrier and heavy equipment operator, is currently employed for W & W Livestock south of Baker. He has a passion for the ranch lifestyle. The Webbers are happy to be in Baker. They have two quarter horses and a Missouri Fox trotter and enjoy living out in the country. Alyse is an accomplished horsewoman. She has shown horses in pleasure, western and English competitions. At 14 years old she began giving riding lessons to special needs children. Once she gets settled in Baker, she is planning to offer horse riding lessons to area children. She also would be interested in learning more about barrel racing opportunities offered in the area. The Webbers are enjoying the small town feel of Baker and the many “friendly people”. They appreciate the slower pace compared to the hustle and bustle of a large city.

4th Annual St. Patrick Leapin’ Leprechaun Race You’ll be “Dublin over with laughter” in Baker Saturday, Mar. 12, when the 4th annual St. Patrick Leapin’ Leprechaun Race gets underway. Clans will gather at 12:45 p.m. in Thee Garage Showroom to create a “Clan Flag” which will unite their team as they begin the quest to collect the most coins in this fun-filled “Paddy Day” challenge. Celebrate your inner leprechaun by forming a team of three and joining in the fun as you run, walk, bike, roller blade or drive to weave your way from “Emerald Island” (Thee Garage Showroom) through five various Irish stations, ending at thee “Irish Horseshoes” (Coldwell Field). Three person teams form a “Clan” that must carry a caldron to collect gold coins from each station and a pin at every pub. FILES OF THE TIMES 10 YEARS AGO Friday, March 17, 2006-Baker Lady Spartan basketball team placed second at the state tournament. They lost to Missoula Loyola 74-48. The Spartans finished the season at 25-1. Lady Spartans on the All-Tournament team were Marnee Overton, Laura Beach, and Josey Madler. . . A rash of vandalism and a robbery occurred in Baker and Plevna this weekend. From early Saturday morning until Sunday evening, three vehicles sustained broken windows at Baker High School. The vehicles damaged belonged to Clayton Hornung, the Gene Koppingers, and the high school van. The windshield was broken out of a fourth vehicle owned by Dean Keirle which was parked behind Heiser’s Bar. A stereo was also stolen out of one of the vehicles, and a window in the high school was broken. The Plevna Bar and Cafe was broken into and money, cigarettes and alcohol were taken. . . . High temperature Mar. 7 was 54 degrees. . . David and Vicki Gustafson will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary Mar. 21. . . Miss Alyson Curry, (daughter of Bob and Terry) a senior at Baker High School, was chosen Miss Montana Tourism in 2005. She recently attended the National Miss Tourism Pageant in Roanoke, VA, Nov. 18-20 and was chosen third runnerup. . . Diana and Rollie Gill celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 2, 2005. . . Don Buerkle was appointed to the Fair Board to fill the remaining term of Don Selle. . . Fallon County Spelling Bee finals resulted in a tie between Kaylee Standard of Baker and Rachelle Houzvicka of Plevna. 20 YEARS AGO Friday, March 15, 1996 -Angie Meschke, owner/operator of Superior Tanning, has introduced the first tanning capsule in Montana. This is quite different from the conventional tanning beds in that the customer stands up while vertical floor to ceiling sun tubes tan every part of your body. . . Over 275 cowboys and cowgirls traveled to Baker to compete in Bronco Days. . . Plevna cheerleaders, Nola Wenz, Kendra Schuetzle, Wendy Stickney and Joni Lang, win district cheerleading trophy. . . It takes only 15 minutes to prepare and your slow cooker does the rest. Slow Cooker Corned Beefand Cabbage Betty Crocker 4 large carrots, peeled, cut into 4 C. water matchstick size pieces 4 Lbs. corned beef brisket 10 baby red potatoes, with spice packet quartered 6 Oz. beer 1 onion, peeled and cut into 1/2 head cabbage coarsely bite size pieces chopped Place carrots, potatoes and onion into the bottom of a slow cooker, pour in water and place brisket on top of the vegetables. Pour beer over the brisket. Sprinkle on the spices from the packet, cover and set the cooker on high. Cook the brisket for about eight hours. One hour before serving, stir in the cabbage and cook one more hour. Delmar Jensen A celebration of DJ’s life will be held Monday, Mar. 14, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Baker. Friends and family may visit with the family Sunday, Mar. 13, from 4-6 p.m. at the Baker Senior Center. In accordance with DJ’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD. Delmar James Jensen, 94, of Baker passed away Mar. 3, 2016 at Fallon Medical Complex. Delmar “DJ” (Tiny) Jensen was born Mar. 23, 1921 to James and Minnie Jensen on their homestead north of Baker. DJ grew up working with his father and brothers in their machine shop and ice house and attended schools in Baker. In July of 1942, DJ entered the Army and was trained as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Force. He was stationed in India in the China, Burma, India (C B I) Theater of WWII. He was honorably discharged from service in 1945 as a S/Sgt. DJ took pride in showing everyone the pictures of places he had seen, including Egypt, North Africa and South America. Mechanics were required to fly four hours a month to keep their flight pay. DJ went on several trips over the Himalayas to China, a very dangerous flight, earning him a reprimand from his commander because “he was too valuable as a Section Leader”. He married Helen Tunby Mar. 1, 1947. While working in the oil fields of Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota and Colorado, they started their family. Wanting to settle down, they moved back to Baker and DJ worked for MDU until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion and WWII -
Bushman files for re-election to PSC Last Man’s Club. DJ enjoyed and was noted for his ability to “make anything”, usually recycling materials he acquired into a new purpose. DJ and Helen had six children: Teri, Penny (Tim) Sikorski, Bruce (Jeanne) Jensen, Brian (Debbie) Jensen, Leslie (John) Henson and Jill Jensen. Family gatherings, his “tinkering”, visiting with friends and touring his favorite dump sites were things he enjoyed. DJ was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen, his infant daughter Teri, his brothers: Alfred, Floyd and Elroy Jensen; his sisters: Doris Johnson and Silver Roth. He is survived by his children; grandchildren: Trevor (Stacy) Sikorski, Taryn Sikorski, Casey (Ashley) Jensen, Kirsten (Byron) Cooper, Jeremy (Shelie) Jensen, Rian (Jodi) Jensen, Carissa (Keaton) Hughes, Hannah, Mika, and Mikey Jensen, Kayla (Justin) Apple, and Tyler Henson; great-grandchildren: Tayden, Maura and Gerritt Sikorski, Rowan Jensen, Tor and Tryg Cooper, Ryan Joe and Arius Jensen, Hailee Cortez, Maverick Hughes, and Apollo Apple; son-in-law, Steve Hirsch. The family wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Superior Care Villa for their loving care of DJ and a special thank you to all of DJ’s friends and relatives. By Sherry Vogel Current Montana Public Service Commissioner Kirk Bushman, Rep., filed for reelection to the District No. 2 seat Feb. 24. Bushman has served Fallon-Carter counties in this position for three years. He states, “I’m eager to continue working for Montana consumers as a Public Service Commissioner, as well as ensure a just and unbiased implementation of our state’s laws in the realm of energy policy and utility regulation. I am confident that my experience serving the people of Montana on the Commission for the last three years positions me as a stronger choice to advocate for long term affordability and reliability of energy than others who seek this office.” Bushman’s professional career began in 1988 with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering technology from Montana State UniversityBozeman. Before being elected to the Commission in 2012, Kirk worked for an engineering consulting firm as a Senior Facility Designer. He currently resides in Billings with his wife and their four children.
Bushman was recently selected to serve on Governor Steve Bullock’s Clean Power Plan advisory council, and has been a strong advocate for natural resource development, and an outspoken opponent to growing Federal regulations such as the Clean Power Plan. “I was pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision to stay the EPA’s CO2 regulations. However, the uncertainty surrounding the use of coal has paralyzed any development associated with Montana’s most beneficial and abundant natural resource. These regulations that have virtually no positive impact are hardly justified, especially when compared to the cost and the harmful impacts to Montana’s economy and job market.” Kirk will spend the next several months traveling throughout south central and eastern Montana to listen to the voters of his district to hear how they believe the decisions the PSC makes can improve their quality of life. A memorial service for Donna Thibault, 62, of Baker was held Mar. 7, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker with Jerry Brown officiating. Burial was in Bonnievale Cemetery. Donna Rost Thibault passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family Mar. 2, 2016. She fought a hard battle of cancer. Donna was born in Miles City Dec. 27, 1953, to Harvey
and Yvonne Rost. After graduating from high school in Baker, she went to Vo Tech School in Bozeman. After graduating, she went to work at UBC in Glasgow. Donna then continued on with her career at UBC in Miles City for 20 plus years. While living in Miles City, she met and married Steve Thibault of Miles City. From this marriage came three children, Jammie Thibault, Amanda Thibault and Gary Thibault. Donna moved to Baker in 2004. She worked at Fallon Medical Complex as a housekeeper for a few years until she got the opportunity to work at the hardware store in Baker. Donna worked at the hardware store until her illness forced her to retire.
Donna loved being around family and her grandchildren. She actively worked on genealogy for all the different sides of her family. Donna is survived by her mother, Yvonne Rost; brothers, Dennis (Margaret) Rost and Dale Rost; sister, Darla (Wayne) Hanson; children, Jammie Thibault, Amanda Thibault, and Gary Thibault;

Superior Villa resident turns 90 ____________
By Sherry Vogel Baker resident Violet Schueler Baird was born at the old Elizabeth Hospital in Baker Feb. 15, 1926, to John J. and Emma Losing Schueler. The family was living in southern Fallon County at a place known as Calumet. Vi spent the first eight years of her life on farms in the Plevna and Willard areas. She attended Mill Creek, Bechtold, and Willard country schools. She came to Baker to
attend high school, graduating from the old brick high school in 1944. She worked while attending high school and after graduating at various Baker businesses such as Penneys, Red Owl, Smitty’s Bakery, Baker Hotel, and Economy Grocery Store. Later, Vi moved to Seattle to work as a “bucker” during World War II. She remembers the day she was “laid off” from the job. It was V-Day, the war was over. She vividly remembers being out in the street in downtown Seattle during the mass celebration. People were throwing rolls of toilet paper out of the high-rise buildings above. In the excitement, she lost one of her penny loafer shoes. She had to scurry around to find it as soon as possible before it was totally covered with all the debris. Later in Seattle, while working at the venetian blind factory, she met Robert Baird
and they were married. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Marjorie. They also had another daughter who was stillborn. Bob and Vi were married for 48 years. Over the years, Vi has attended many courses in adult education. Among her education was a course in dental assisting. She worked as a dental assistant in Massachusetts. After her husband passed, Vi returned to Montana. She became involved with the Angel Tree Prison Ministry sponsored by Chuck Colson Ministries. This ministry gave Christmas gifts to children whose parent or parents were in prison. She said this ministry brought great joy to her life. During this time, she recommitted her life to Christ and found herself the peace that only Jesus can give. Violet decided to return “back home” to Baker in Feb. 2002. She has many fond
memories of growing up in Baker. She also has a sister, Betty Kusler, who lives here. In her spare time she enjoys reading, music, writing poetry, crocheting and making recycled cards for the Center. She also enjoys writing to pen pals and currently has 50-60 pen pals from every part of the country. She enjoys writing to them and helping them unite with one another. In closing, Vi added, “I have a pet peeve. Oh, yes, I have Volunteer Therese Thompson and Villa resident Joan them, too! They don’t take the time to talk to each other anymore. They are too busy to rest and enjoy the blessings of life itself.” Vi enjoys living at Superior Care Villa. The National Weather Service relies on trained volunteers to supplement Doppler radar information on severe storms. Storm spotter reports are an important step in the National Weather Service warning decision process for severe thunderstorms that produce damaging hail, high winds, tornadoes, and flash
floods. The training is free and anyone interested in severe weather or becoming a trained severe storm spotter is invited to attend. Volunteers currently registered for the program are also encouraged to attend as a refresher and to stay updated on the latest reporting procedures. As technology advances, more conveniences as well as dangers come with it. Earl Campbell, a police officer for the Billings Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, presented the cold hard facts of the potential dangers on the internet to three separate grade groups: 3-6, 7-8 and 9-12. He also had a presentation for parents that evening. For instance, if you use Snapchat to communicate with your friends, Snapchat’s servers can hold those pictures indefinitely. This should make you think twice about anything you send. Facebook requires access to your phone’s camera and microphone. Though you may think nothing of it, they can record audio and video anytime they want. Now, obviously, if you are not doing anything wrong or saying anything wrong then this should not matter. If you are sharing personal information across Facebook messenger, it might be good to remember that other people may see this as it is the World Wide Web. There are 1.4 billion people on Facebook. If Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest country in the world. If someone manages to hack an account somewhere online, they may be able to use your personal photos and/or information to do whatever they want. Remember, nothing on the social net-

The Plevna School was in need of child care for the Internet Safety presentation for parents, so three seventh grade students - Dacy Buerkle, Jenna Paul and Sophia Dulin - stepped up to the plate and volunteered to fill the need. They created a Focus on Children project entitled “Kids Care Center - KCC”, and planned a variety of activities to keep children sixth grade and under busy for over one and one-half hours. This wouldn’t have been possible without the help of other volunteers in the FCCLA organization. Children had the opportunity to shoot hoops, play golf, cut let-

handling live poultry Raising backyard poultry has become increasingly popular in Montana and many feed stores across the state offer chicks for sale. State health officials say that raising chicks can be a rewarding and fun experience, but they are reminding Montanans to keep safe handling practices in mind when handling live poultry in order to limit disease risk. “Even healthy animals can carry organisms that make people sick,” said Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) epidemiologist Dana Fejes. In 2015, ten percent of Montanans who became ill with salmonella had contact to live poultry. Young children and persons with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk for infection. For that reason, DPHHS and the Department of Livestock (DOL) are sending educational materials to feed stores so Montanans can learn how to care for live poultry safely. “Look for trivia questions on soap bars at your local store,” Fejes said. DOL assistant state veterinarian Dr. Tahnee Szymanksi
said, “Next time you care for your backyard flock, please remember the following simple prevention measures to keep your families healthy and enjoy the benefits of raising animals.” * Wash your hands after handling animals * Avoid touching your mouth after animal contact * Don’t eat or drink around animals * Don’t bring poultry into the house, and * Supervise small children around animals. “Together we can prevent illnesses and keep our children and communities healthy,” Fejes stressed. The Commission and Trent discussed the detention officer schedule and recruitment; increase in Bozeman prisoner rates; cell improvements; Sheriff’s equipment in the vault; reserve officers’ pay for County events; Sheriff’s Capital Improvement Plan; Task Force support; increasing the prisoner budget and the HVAC rooftop unit. Agriculture Safety Awareness Week Keeping family safe on the farm/ranch should be a top priority, according to the Montana Farm Bureau Federation. The Montana Farm Bureau urges farmers and ranchers to review their safety programs as part of the Agricultural Safety Awareness Program (ASAP) March 6-12. The theme for this year is “Caution: Safety is No Accident”. “Farming and ranching are those rare jobs where you take your kids to work with you,” says Les Graham coordinator for the Montana Ag Safety Program and safety contractor with MFBF. “It’s very important that every family takes a tour of their farm or ranch every six months and takes all of the hazards into account.” Graham encourages families to mark areas of concern with signs, posters or painted posts - something to let people know there is an area to be especially cautious or in some cases, avoided. “Your kids need to know the ‘go’ and ‘no go’ zones, and know those will be strictly enforced,” he said. “It’s important to talk about issues of concern, such as

ditches, corrals, pens, and overhead electrical wires. Set up procedures about working around equipment, identifying how close you can get, staying on the back of equipment, and riding on equipment.” The safety trainer says it’s critical to set up communication with family members, whether it’s hand signals, the use of cell phones, electronic use and who is the authority to go with communications questions. It’s especially important that family - including outside employees - have a safety meeting every time there is a business activity, whether it’s branding, irrigating, harvesting, haying or moving livestock. “Train family members on the ‘How To Do’ in work areas: don’t take for granted that everyone knows what to do,” Graham cautions. “It’s wise to even talk about near misses, and learn from those close calls. There were too many kids killed last year in farm accidents, which is always tragic. Taking that little extra time to ensure nobody is standing behind your tractor, that a grain bin doesn’t have kids playing in it, or giving an additional warning to avoid the pen with the bull can save lives,” concluded Graham. The Agricultural Safety Awareness Program is part of the Farm Bureau Health and Safety Network of professionals who share an interest in identifying and decreasing safety and health risks.
