The Baker High School speech and drama team competed at the State Class B meet in Ennis Jan. 29-30. The drama team placed second overall, and Devon Solberg led the team with a first place state championship in Humorous Solo. Olivia Mahon placed third in Serious Solo, Anna Espeland and Megan Greiff placed fourth in Serious Duo, Isaac Rost earned third

place in Impromptu. MaKenzy Shipstead placed fifth in MPA, Jaden Miller - fifth in Original Oratory, Taylyn Dukart - eighth in LD Debate, and Taiken Goerndt (MPA) lost in a tie going into finals.

The team is coached by head coach Mike Davis. Assistant coaches are Dena Kirschten and Carole Bettenhausen.

Lovec appointed executive director of Baker Chamber of Commerce

By Sherry Vogel Jan Lovec began her new job as Baker Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dec. 9, 2015. Jan looks forward to serving the Chamber in this part-time position. She will strive to help unify the businesses on Main Street with the other commercial merchants in the outlying area.

The Chamber hosts a variety of events throughout the year including the Fall Festival, Calcutta, Countdown to Christmas, and Crazy Days.

This summer, they will also be helping to promote the Montana State High School Rodeo Finals.

The Annual Membership Drive is underway. The Chamber encourages any local business that isn’t a member to join. They offer a web-

site which promotes each Chamber business and displays their pertinent business information.

Lovec has been a member of the community for the past 42 years as she and her family moved to Baker in 1974. Soon after, she became employed as the district manager at the Little Beaver Conservation District, a position she held for 15 years. Lovec then served at the Fallon Medical Complex as the dietary manager for the next ten years.

She is currently employed for School District #12 as the north route bus driver and is also a substitute driver for the Fallon County Flyer.

Jan is married to Mike Lovec. She has two grown children, Mike Menger of Baker, and Stacy Menger Kinsey of Billings.

Baker High School wrestlers who are going to the state meet are Bryan Hastig, Nathan Beck, Will Bagley, and Colton Cornwell. . . Mayor Clayton Hornung told council members he had visited with Roger Meggers concerning exploration of gas wells at the airport.The city has plans with Loma Energy to drill two wells north of the airport. . . Esther Meidinger A funeral service for Esther Carrie Fish Meidinger, 88, of Bismarck, N.D., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at 10:30 a.m. at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson, N.D. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at the Black Hills National Veterans Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Esther passed away Jan. 30, 2016, at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Home in Bismarck, N.D. Esther was born June 27, 1927, in East Fairview, N.D., to Oscar and Blanche Schamehorn Fish. She was the third born of five children. After high school graduation, Esther ventured to California where she worked for a telephone company. Upon returning to Fairview, she married Wallace Meidinger in 1948 and together they had four children: Myra, Dan, Bruce and Brian.

Esther and Wally lived in Glendive for many years and here they raised their children, owned and operated a gift store, and Esther worked for the credit union, at Dawson Community College and for Eastmont. Esther took great pride in being a den mother for her sons’ Scout troops and being involved in her children’s activities. After moving to Baker in 1971, Esther worked at the livestock sales barn and a local law office. In their later years, Esther and Wally enjoyed traveling, camping and visiting family and friends. Esther also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, music, bowling and dancing. In 2002, Esther moved to Bismarck, N.D. Esther is survived by her four children, Myra (Floyd) Gabel of Kinsey, Dan Meidinger (Denise) of Florien, La., Bruce Meidinger (Sherry) of Bismarck, N.D., and Brian (Sherry) Meidinger of Casper, Wyo.; one sister, Nora Kreb, of Great Falls; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Meidinger of Glendive and Viola Meidinger of Miles City; eight grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace; infant brother, Dale; brother, Gary; and two sisters, Marcella Holom and Verna Johnson.

Fallon County Sheriff endorses initiative Montana is one of 18 states that does not provide Constitutional protections for victims of crime. A new ballot initiative is aimed at changing that - Marsy’s Law for Montana would elevate victims’ rights up to the Constitutional level to make them co-equal to the rights afforded to individuals accused or convicted of crime.

Fallon County Sheriff Trent Harbaugh recently gave his official endorsement of Marsy’s Law. “The law enforcement officers across our state do everything in their power to protect crime victims and ensure their rights are upheld,” said Sheriff Trent Harbaugh. “But because the rights of victims aren’t Constitutionally protected, their rights are not equal to

those of the accused some times victims can feel left out of the process. We need to make sure that the rights of Montana’s crime victims are viewed as co-equal with those of the accused.”

Marsy’s Law would protect the rights of victims to be notified of and be heard at proceedings in their case. It would also give them the right to be notified of changes in an offender’s custodial status and guarantee their right to restitution.

The initiative is named after Marsalee (Marsy) Nicholas, a California college student who was stalked and murdered by her ex-boyfriend. Shortly after her murder, Marsy’s mother and brother were confronted and harassed by the murderer

By Sherry Vogel It’s three days after Groundhog’s Day, and it might seem like a crowd of people in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania made a big ruckus about nothing. What did the groundhog, a cousin to our Montana prairie dog, forecast about the arrival of spring?

He woke up from hibernation a little groggy and did not see his shadow, so that means spring will come early.

While that may not be preposterous in Pennsylvania, it is in Montana. I hate to “bust your bubble” but the official first day of spring is seven weeks (46-48 days) after Groundhog Day, arriving March 21. If you visit with any old timer in this area, he will tell you that it isn’t un-

The trauma Marsy’s family experienced in the murder trial led her brother, Henry, to found Marsy’s Law for All, a victim’s rights group with the objective of empowering crime victims by elevating their rights to the Constitutional level.

Marsy’s Law for All has already helped enact Constitutional Amendments in three states and is currently working to place an Amendment on the Montana ballot in 2016. For more information, visit www.marsyslaw.us.

Montana 4-H includes a special program for five to eight year olds called Cloverbuds.

Members of the Cloverbud project work with other children on selected 4-H activities from a curriculum that is fun, hands-on and discovery oriented.

Fallon County 4-H Cloverbuds will be meeting twice a month in the basement of the library in the Fallon County Courthouse beginning Feb. 22.

4-H program assistant Kodie Olsen along with 4-H teen leaders will provide Cloverbuds with educational activities, skill building games, and nutritional snacks. Many of the items Cloverbud members will make at the meetings may be entered as exhibits in the Fallon County Fair.

Parents’ Night Girls’ and boys’ basketball Parents’ Night will be held Friday, Feb. 5, when the Baker Lady Spartans and the Baker Spartans host Wolf Point.

Boys’ C team plays at 2:00 p.m. and boys’ JV at 3:30 p.m. in the Longfellow gym. Girls’ C is at 2:00 p.m., girls’ JV at 3:30 p.m. and girls’ varsity at 5:30 p.m., all in McGonigal Gymnasium. Boys’ varsity is at 7:00 p.m. in McGonigal Gymnasium.

Parents of senior players and/or managers will be introduced prior to the starting lineup of their respective games. Members of the Spartanettes will be on hand to assist.

Seniors girls to be introduced are Taylyn Koenig (the late Dustin and Kandi Koenig), Morgan Miller (Bill and Jodi), Elisa Hautala (exchange student of Nate and Libby Solberg), and manager Madison Varner (Dennis and Sherry).

Following the games, there will be a reception in the BHS complex lobby. All parents, players, managers and coaches are welcome to attend. To help with this, all freshman parents are asked to bring either two dozen cookies or bars. These may be left at the concession stand in the complex lobby before or during the games.

State speech and drama The Baker High School speech and drama team competed at the State Class B meet in Ennis Jan. 29-30. The drama team placed second overall, and Devon Solberg led the team with a first place state championship in Humorous Solo. Olivia Mahon placed third in Serious Solo, Anna Espeland and Megan Greiff placed fourth in Serious Duo, Isaac Rost earned third place in Impromptu. MaKenzy Shipstead placed fifth in MPA, Jaden Miller - fifth in Original Oratory, Taylyn Dukart eighth in LD Debate, and Taiken Goerndt (MPA) lost in a tie going into finals.

By Nicole Allerdings Mrs. Bidwell’s kindergarten class has been learning about the letter “P”. To celebrate some words that start with “P”, they had a party. Jan. 28, the students came to school dressed in their pajamas. They enjoyed popcorn and watched a movie.

The class is excited to almost be done learning all the letters in the alphabet.

Robotic class construct a mini tank

Chris Skogas and Jake Edgell building the tank.

The robotics class, consisting of Jake Edgell, Layne Silver-Farris and Chris Skogas, has constructed a mini tank and has programmed it to do several things. They programmed it by installing information from a computer to the power brick on the bank. The tank can move forward, backward and spin on a dime. The tank even has a plow on the front of it - maybe they can plow snow off the sidewalks!

The class plans on making more fun creations in the future.

MHSRF public organizational meeting

By Sherry Vogel The first public meeting to organize volunteers for the Montana High School Rodeo Finals (MHSRF) event to take place here in Baker June 7-12 was held at the local fairgrounds Jan. 26. The meeting was well attended with

53 prospective volunteers present.

A panel of fair board members and community advisors presented their aspirations for the soon approaching event.

Local residents shared their experiences of attending other high school rodeo finals. A lot of valu-

able information was exchanged.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at the fairgrounds exhibit hall.

Many more community volunteers are needed to make this hometown event a success.

Country Pals 4-H Submitted by Colton Turbiville, reporter The Country Pals 4-H meeting was called to order by Taylyn Dukart Jan. 10, 2016 at Mastels’ house. Roll call was what was our favorite Christmas present? Treasurer’s report was given, followed by the secretary’s report which was read by Rilee Pettersen and the minutes were approved as read.

Marvel reported it was decided upon at the last livestock committee meeting that the weight class for goats being anything under the weight of 50 pounds is considered a feeder class. Also, Marvel reported on the feeder stocker program. Steer calves will be feeder calves and the heifer calves will be in breeding classes under one year old.

Rilee Pettersen did a report on the last cooking workshop Melissa Ploeger put on for levels two and three.

Old business was then looked at.

We needed to re-elect a president and vice president. Tannon Dukart made a motion to open nominations for president. Taylyn Dukart was nominated to be our new president.

Terrell Koenig made a motion for nominations for president to cease.

Tannon Dukart made a motion to open nominations for vice president. Shianne Beach seconded the motion. Rilee Pettersen nominated Mattie Mastel. Chance Follmer seconded the motion and nominations were closed.

New business: It was reported that the People Partner Grants are due by mid-January.

We went over going to the Black Hills Stock Show.

Foods Festival will be February 1 if anyone is interested.

The Livestock Committee meeting will be held Jan.13 in the courthouse basement; with the Council meeting being held Jan. 13 at 5:15 p.m.

Fair Board is having a meeting for the High School Rodeo Finals Jan. 26 at 7:00. Hope and Bev agreed to go and get some information for the money making idea of cleaning the stalls.

What happens if the transfer is protested? Depending on the number of protests and the protest grounds, a public hearing will be held in Helena or Baker.

All valid protestors will be notified of the hearing’s time, date and location. Hearings typically are scheduled within 90 days. A protester’s hearing testimony is limited to the grounds in the protester’s letter. Following the hearing, the Department of Revenue will notify the public whether the license transfer is approved or denied.

Ketterling named Youth Archer of the Year Kayla Ketterling, daughter of Kent and Lora Ketterling of Cheyenne, WY, was recently named the 2015 Wyoming State Archery Association’s Youth Archer of the Year.

Kindergarten classes donate to Community Cupboard It was the 100th day of school Friday, January 29. To help celebrate this milestone, Mrs. Lesh, Mrs. Shelhamer and Mrs. Wedemeyer’s kindergarten classes were challenged to gather 100 items to be donated to the

local Community Cupboard.

This is the sixth year the kindergarten class has donated to this worthy cause.

Throughout the week the total amount grew, and grew, and grew and finally by the 100th day there was a grand

total of 225 items to be donated! Carla Brown, who is a representative for the Community Cupboard, stopped by to accept the donations and for a picture with the kindergarten students and their awesome haul. Great job

Sunday dance a success

By Sherry Vogel Thee Garage Showroom was packed Sunday afternoon, Jan. 31. Fifteen to 20 couples crowded the dance floor as they two-stepped, waltzed or jitterbugged to the music of Robert Boggs, Phil Cook, and the McGhees. People came from far and near - Jordan, Baker, Miles City, Terry, Rhame and Bowman.

Come out “shake a leg”, enjoy refreshments or just swap stories as all ages come together to kick off the start of a new month. Dances are regularly scheduled events held the last Sunday of each month taking place from 2-5 p.m. at Thee Garage Showroom.

Next dance will be held Feb. 28. All ages are welcome.
