Miss Montana visits Baker

By Sherry Vogel Miss Montana Danielle Wineman, native of Cut Bank, was in Baker Feb. 5 to share her anti-bullying message, “Act on Compassion”. She also entertained the elementary and high school students with her musical talent as a pianist.

This was Miss Montana’s 147th presentation. She has spoken to 26,000 Montana students since she began her reign June 13, 2015. Miss Montana emphasizes each student “is the star of their own story” and, therefore, can determine what the student thinks about themselves. Continuing the metaphor, she said the student also plays a role in the story of those they interact with.

She stated, “Every time you use your words, you are making a conscious decision between using your words for the forces of good and the forces of evil.” She added, “ “By refraining from negative comments, we help others maintain their own confidence and character.”

Toward the end of the program, Wineman allotted time for questions. One elementary student asked, “When is your birthday?”

Miss Montana replied, “My birthday is on Pi day. “ (π = 3.14).

She then asked, “Do you know when that is?”

One eager student’s hand shot up and she said, “Thanksgiving”!

Another question asked was, “How does your crown stay on?”

The children broke into laughter when she replied, “In the morning I chew a big wad of bubble gum,” as she motioned that she puts it on the top of her head.

Miss Montana, a 23 year old theatre arts graduate, encourages all young teen girls in Montana, aged 14-18, to enter the Miss Montana Outstanding Teen Pageant. Every contestant is awarded a scholarship of no less than $250. The Miss Montana Pageant is open to all Montana women ages 19-27. Each contestant walks away with no less than $850. Kreager has actually worked for Fallon County since Jan. 3, 1951 as the secretary in the welfare department. . . Bryan Hastig, a senior heavyweight wrestler at Baker High School, grappled his way to the state championship in the Class B/C tournament held in Billings this past weekend. Two juniors, Nathan Beck and Will Bagley both placed fourth in their divisions, and Colton Cornwell placed third in his division. . . Western Family white or wheat roundtop bread is on sale at Reynolds for 69 cents a loaf. . Colin (Cog) Cameron celebrates his 80th birthday Feb. 18. . . Kay and Pat Hanley celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary Feb. 19. . . Baker Spartans and Lady Spartans basketball teams are at their district tourneys Feb. 15-18 in Colstrip. The Lady Spartans are undefeated this season and won the district title. . . Plevna Lady Cougars are at their district tourney Feb. 16-18 in Forsyth. . .

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest winners were MiKenna O’Donnell, Jalyn Walker of Plevna, Kelsey Hadley, Jennifer Kary, Jordan Walker of Ekalaka, Jordan Gray and Reid Medearis of Plevna, and Bryan Overton of Baker. These students are now eligible to participate at the district level.

20 YEARS AGO Friday, February 16, 1996-Darick Gorder, a junior at Baker High School, garnered the State B wrestling title in the 189 pound weight division at the state tournament held in Billings this past weekend.

Darick is the son of Pam and Gary Gorder of Baker. . . Construction could begin as early as next week on a buried pipeline that will run from the Montana/North Dakota border to ten miles west of Baker. The pipeline is being build by Koch Pipeline Co., LP of Belfield, ND. The pipeline will hook up with an existing pipeline for the transportation of crude oil which Koch buys from other companies. . . High temperature Feb. 9 was 56 degrees. . . Adeline Bertsch and Jean Hickey were winners of the Fallon Creek CowBelles Valentine drawing. . . Brenda Uecker and Lana Buerkle were winners of the Valentine’s Dinner For Two Contest sponsored by local businesses. . . . Don Selle of Baker participated in the Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Rodeo Jan. 30.

His teammates were Neil Kittelmann, Les Kreitel, Shane Peabody and Hailey Walker from Ekalaka. They won two events out of five and took second place overall.

30 YEARS AGO Thursday, February 13, 1986-- Karen Losing will be joining the group of Fair Board directors as a replacement for Ron Shepherd who recently resigned. . . Jim Stanton and Don Schillinger of Baker High School recently attended the Montana High School Association meeting held in Billings. The subject of interest to most was the MHSA’s decision regarding basketball season for girls basketball. The MHSA voted overwhelmingly to go to court Mar. 21 and let the courts decide whether different seasons can be continued for boys and girls basketball. If they had not voted to go to court, girls basketball season would be the same time as the boys season beginning in the 1986-87 school year. . . Beta Sigma Phi Valentine queens crowned at their annual Valentine Ball last Saturday were Verna Hatfield, Tami Baldwin and Lana Buerkle. . . Pvt. Marshall Kinsey, son of Jack and Sandy Kinsey, has completed basic training at Fort Knox, KY. . .

Rob Merwin grabbed first place title in the 132 lb. weight class at the state wrestling tourney this past weekend in Cut Bank. Casey O’Donnell placed fifth.

40 YEARS AGO Thursday, February 12, 1976 -- Five Baker wrestlers will be traveling to the state meet in Cut Bank this weekend. They are Jim Wang, John Beach, Richard Curry, Cody Johnson and Tom Madler. The boys are coached by Fred Perry. . . A jury of nine men and three women returned a verdict of mitigated deliberate homicide against Gloria Eagan in the death of Russel Hanson.

Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 26. . . Ruth Townsend has been named president of the Fallon County Federal Credit Union for the 1976 term.

Helen Hoke is vice president, and Charles Larson and Bernadette Liming were elected to two year terms on the board of directors. . . Mel Moser and Carol Gill earned the right to compete in the state speech contest in Malta.

Baker’s speech team is under the direction of Kathy Goldner.

50 YEARS AGO Thursday, February 17, 1966 -- Baker High School gym will be the center of activity in the area as the northeast Divisional Wrestling Tourney makes its debut Feb. 18-19. Eleven teams will be competing. . . Eldon Mengel was elected president of the Fallon County Improvement Association at its regular meeting Feb. 9. . . Bids for supplies needed in the construction of the new sewer lagoon were let at the mid-monthly meeting of the Baker City Council.

60 YEARS AGO Thursday, February 16, 1956 -- George Severson, who purchased the Baker Hotel three years ago, has resumed active management of the town’s leading hotel. Robert Kochel, who has operated the establishment under a lease for the last two years, left for Dallas, Ore. . . Government hunter Rex Schaefer and Allie Ferrel, Baker, are pictured with their hunting dogs and their kill from the Baker area which included six bobcats and one coyote.

70 YEARS AGO Thursday, February 14, 1946 -- John Mellor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mellor, has been discharged from the Navy. . . Corp. Lew Price left Monday to return to Camp Roberts, Calif. His furlough had been extended for a few days because of the illness of his two sons. . . Baker is rated number one place in the tournament. Spartans will face Cohagen or Terry in the first game. . . Nearly two tons of used clothing were packed and shipped for war-stricken families this week. Mrs. Vic Grainger was chairman for the project. . . Jack Lentz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Lentz, arrived home Wednesday an excorporal, having received his discharge at Seattle.

80 YEARS AGO Thursday, February 13, 1936 -- Fire, thought caused by defective wiring, originating in the Baker Meat Market Sunday evening caused damages estimated at well over $3500 to the Meat Market, Grainger’s Restaurant, and Grainger’s Hall. Firemen battled the blaze in 23 degree below zero weather. The two buildings involved are two of the oldest buildings in Baker and are owned by Mrs. Pearce Morris. . . Baker was the coldest spot in the nation last Friday night when the temperature dropped to 40 degrees below zero. Some farmers report snow drifts from 8-10 feet on the level.

Fire Department calls January 16 - Baker’s Rural Fire Dept. responded to a call for mutual aid to a barn fire in Marmarth, ND. Enroute, firefighters were notified that things were under control and they turned around and went back to the station.

January 17 - The Rural Fire Department was called for a mutual aid assist from the Plevna Fire Department. A barn, which was engulfed in flames south of Plevna, was deemed a total loss.

January 25 - The Rural Fire Department responded to a one-vehicle rollover south of Baker at mile marker 13 on Highway 7. The single occupant was extracted with the “jaws of life” and transported by ambulance to Fallon Medical Complex.

January 28 - The Rural Fire Department responded to a truck fire at a locale north of Baker. The fire that was electrical in nature was extinguished.

Pluhar elected NAAA treasurer Randy Hoeger A funeral service for Randy Hoeger, 46, of Baker was held Feb. 9, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker with Pastor Joe Nagel officiating. A family receiving friends service was held Feb. 8, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home.

Randy passed away Feb. 3, 2016 at Billings Clinic in Billings.

Randy Scott Hoeger was born in Rollette, N.D., Feb. 3, 1970 to Herald and Lillian (Parsien) Hoeger. He grew up and attended school in Belcourt, N.D., graduating from Belcourt High School. After graduating from high school, Randy worked in the construction business around the area.

He met Brenda in 1996 and they started dating in 1997.

Randy and Brenda were then married July 10, 1999, at the International Peace Gardens.

Together they moved to Baker and raised their family.

Randy’s children - Brittany, Bailey, and Lily Rose - were special to his heart. Randy continued working in the oilfield business, later becoming a rig manager. His oilfield family meant a lot to him, especially those on Ensign Rig

Randy loved spending his time fishing, especially w i t h Clint. He t o o k g r e a t pride in taking care of his dog, Lucky Lady.

She was a special companion of his. Everyone knew Randy for his big heart.

Randy will be greatly missed by his family, friends and oilfield family.

Randy is survived by his mother, Lillian; wife, Brenda; children, Brittany Hoeger, Bailey Hoeger, and Lily Rose Hoger; sisters, Betty HoegerLavallie, Shirley HoegerPoitra and Marilyn Hoeger-Baker; brother, Gerald Hoeger; his Wilkie siblings; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and his oilfield family.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Kenneth and Jake.

Alexandria, VA - The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) is pleased to announce that Darrin Pluhar has been elected as its new treasurer for 2016.

Pluhar owns Plu’s Flying Service Inc., an aerial application business located in Ekalaka, that operates three aircraft. Since establishing the business in 1996, he has been servicing producers across southeastern Montana for more than 20 years. Pluhar hires pilots as needed, but does most of the spraying himself. He primarily applies herbicides to winter wheat and spring wheat, but he also treats a great deal of pasture and alfalfa, with some safflower, sunflowers and corn.

His season starts in April and ends in November. Because July and August can sometimes be slow months for aerial application in southeast Montana, Pluhar uses that time to help other aerial application operators across the Midwest when they get busy.

“I know what it’s like to be behind and need help ASAP, so I tend to return the favor and help other operators out whenever I can,” Pluhar said.

Pluhar has been an active member of the Association of Montana Aerial Applicators and NAAA for years. In 2008-09, he went through the NAAA/Syngenta Leadership Training Program, which develops new leaders and advocates for the agricultural aviation industry. He joined NAAA’s board of directors as Montana’s state representative in 2013 and has served on several key committees, including NAAA’s government relations, bylaws, and safety/federal aviation regulations committees.

Pluhar is honored to serve alongside his fellow officers.

Dear Editor, Many of you have seen the red, white and blue DAV vehicles as you drive down the highway. The person driving the vehicle is a volunteer for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Montana (VA Montana). These volunteers drive Veterans, who have no other means of transportation, to and from VA approved appointments. We currently have no qualified drivers in the Baker area and we are recruiting volunteer drivers. The Veterans living in the Baker area are having a difficult time getting transportation to their appointments.

DAV donates vehicles to VA Montana. There is a DAV Hospital Service Coordinator in Billings and a local area coordinator in Baker. When Veterans have a VA approved appointment scheduled, they contact the Hospital Service Coordinator to arrange transportation. There is no cost to the Veterans for the transportation.

The process to become a volunteer is a completed application packet, a physical examination through the VA, background check, current Montana driver’s license, and proof of auto insurance.

Zoe Jane Sestrich Julie and Jonathan Sestrich of Lakewood, CO would like to announce the birth of their daughter, Zoe Jane Sestrich.

Zoe joined her big brother, Jaxon (2), July 31, 2015 in Denver, CO. Zoe weighed 7 lbs. and was 19 1/2 inches long.

Baker City Council meeting Mayor Clayton Hornung called the regular meeting of the Baker City Council to order Feb. 3 in the Fallon County court room. All members of the Council and one member of the public were present. Business on the agenda was: • Sherry Vogel, member of the public, in regards to proposing a false facade (false store front) ordinance in effect on all future commercial and A-frame metal buildings constructed on Main Street.

In addition, an ordinance to impose a time limit to begin reconstruction once a demolition permit is issued. Ensuring vacant lots don’t remain empty for years.

Vogel concluded her presentation by sharing incentive programs other cities are of-

fering to motivate commercial property owners to improve their Main Street investments.

The Council asked Vogel to speak to commercial lot owners on Main Street and solicit their input on the matter.

• A request was received from Mid-Rivers Communication to extend the cable and communications franchise.

The Council will draw up a resolution draft to grant this proposal.

In closing, the Council addressed issues concerning Treasure State Endowment Program Grants available only if Baker complies with target rates mandated by TCEP grant requirements.

The City Council has an open door policy and the public is always welcome to attend.

After one quarter, the Spartans held a four point lead, 17-13. The Spartans had a roaring second quarter as they out-scored the Wolves 21-10, and went into halftime up by 15 points with a score of 3823.

The second half started with the Spartans out-scoring the Wolves by four in the third quarter, making the Spartans’ lead grow to 19 points. In the final quarter, the Spartans were out-scored by the Wolves 19-15.

Through With Chew Week February 14-20 Submitted by Julie Russell RN Tobacco Prevention Specialist Through With Chew Week, Feb.14-20, calls attention to the dangers of using chew, which includes chewing tobacco and snuff. Chew contains at least 28 chemicals that have been found to cause cancer of the mouth, esophagus, and pancreas. Treating oral cancers can involve the removal of tissue and bones, including the tongue and jaw.

Smokeless tobacco not only causes cancer, but increases the risk of fatal stroke and heart attack, reduces fertility in men and contributes to oral disease.

On average, chew delivers a higher dose of nicotine than cigarettes, making the product more addictive and habit forming. Tobacco companies also make products such as flavored smokeless tobacco which attracts new users and young people under age 18.

Snuff, snus, e-cigarettes, and other innovative nicotine addiction devices are being developed and marketed, all to produce nicotine dependence in children who would otherwise avoid tobacco. These products encourage youth and others to believe they are not as harmful as smoking tobacco. None of these new products have been proven safe.

In 2013, 25.8 percent of male high school seniors in Montana used smokeless tobacco and nearly 30 percent of Montana men, aged 18-34, currently use smokeless tobacco.

Miss Montana visit

By Nicole Allerdings February 4, Miss Montana 2015 visited Plevna School to share a message with students and teachers. Danielle Wineman was crowned Miss Montana June 13, 2015, and since then she has visited 130 schools in Montana and spoke to 26,000 students on her Crown to Classroom tour. She shared that she is from Cut Bank, which is in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the world’s largest penguin - a 60 foot tall statue that welcomes visitors to the town.

Danielle expressed her passion for acting, explaining that William Shakespeare is one of her favorite writers. She mentioned a line from his work “As You Like It”, that says “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players”.

Danielle emphasized that each individual has a story, and that individuals are the stars of their own stories. She used her favorite fairy tale, Cinderella, to make a comparison to the roles we play in our own stories. In the story, Cinderella asks her fairy godmother for advice, treating here with kindness and respect. The fairy godmother is more than willing to help Cin-

derella. Danielle related the fairy godmother to teachers and other trusted adults who are players in each student’s story. The mice in the story are Cinderella’s positive helpers, just as friends play an uplifting role in our lives. Finally, Cinderella’s stepmother plays the villain in her story, telling Cinderella things that make her feel small and insignificant. Danielle shared that people can make us feel the same way and play the villain in our stories.

She told the audience that they have a super power that can be used for good or evil - their words. She asked for volunteers from the audience who demonstrated who our confidence can be crushed by the villains in our stories, but stressed that supporting characters like friends can help us rebuild our self-esteem.

To end her presentation, Danielle played the theme song of Pirates of the Caribbean on the piano. Miss Montana’s visit encouraged students to be the stars of their own stories and be a positive and supporting character in the stories of their peers.

Creating snow scenes in Mrs. Tunby’s Class

By Nicole Allerdings Mrs. Tunby’s first grade class recently read the book, “The Snowy Day”. They enjoyed seeing pictures of the character playing in the winter snow. After the class finished the story, each student chose their favorite scene from the book and recreated it. They used a mixture of shaving cream and glue to create a unique snow scene on blue construction paper. The students like the minty smell of the shaving cream, and practiced making shapes on their desks. They observed the shaving cream made their desks smooth and clean. I Love to Read Week festivities Each year the elementary students celebrate reading during February. This year, instead of the usual I Love to Read Week festivities, the students will be participating in special activities throughout the whole month. All students K-12 will experience DEAR “Drop Everything And Read” - each week in February.

When an announcement is made during the school day students will spend 15 minutes reading a book.

The next Wednesday was “Pajama Day” to celebrate reading under the covers. Melstone Mechanics and Livestock Judging

By Jessica Stockett February 8, the Plevna and Baker FFA Chapters traveled together to Melstone for mechanics and livestock judging competitions. On the mechanics team, Dylan Sander placed 31st, Jessica Stockett 41st, and Jake Edgell placed 58th out of 73. Some of the contest areas included small engines,

electrical, construction and welding.

For livestock judging, Jessica Paul placed 1st, Taylor Bertsch 4th, Dacy Buerkle 11th, Jenna Paul 12th, and Sophia Dulin 32nd. As a team they placed first out of ten.

hogs, breeding heifers and replacement heifers. They had to give oral reasons on a class of bred ewes and a class of feeder hogs.

Everyone had a great learning experience and came home with some new knowledge to apply to their next competition.

Students from Ekalaka, Plevna and Baker participated in the recent Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest. Boys and girls in six age groups from 9 years old to 14 years old competed in shooting 15 free throws.

Honoring Saint Valentine

By Sherry Vogel During the third century in Rome, a young priest named Valentine was sentenced to death because he was performing marriages for young couples. While Rome was engaged in war, ruling Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage because he believed single men made better soldiers. This unjust ruling made the young priest furious so he continued to perform wedding ceremonies. Upon being discovered, he was imprisoned and placed on death row. During his incarceration, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter who visited him in prison. Before he was put to death, he sent her a letter and signed it, “From Your Valentine” - an expression of love that we still use today.

He was executed Feb. 14, 270 AD. Later, around 496 AD, Pope Gelasius proclaimed Feb. 14 a day to honor Valentine, who by then was declared a saint.

We continue to honor St. Valentine by celebrating Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14 each year. This has become a day to celebrate our love for significant others, family and friends.

You might want to serve on Planning Board Submitted by Mary Grube, Planner Administrative Assistant Advertisements for the Planning Board vacancies have been published off and on in the Fallon County Times in the past and perhaps community members have noticed, but aren’t quite sure what the Planning Board is all about. The Fallon County Planning Board is a county planning board with representation from the Town of Plevna, City of Baker, Little Beaver Conservation District, and the County of Fallon. This Board has a total of nine members. The role of the Planning Board, according to MCA 76-1-106, is to ensure the promotion of public health, safety, morals, convenience, or order of the general welfare and for the sake of efficiency and economy in the process of community development. If the governing body should request a growth policy or an update to the growth policy, the Planning Board shall prepare the growth policy and serve in an advisory

capacity to the local governing bodies. The Planning Board may also propose policies for subdivision plats, the development of public ways, public places, public structures, and public and private utilities.

The Planning Board is responsible for mitigating preliminary subdivision applications and for making recommendations to the governing body with conditions related to developing the subdivision that follow state statute and our local regulations.

Serving on the Planning Board does not require any form of experience or educational requirements, but it will require the members to become aware of land use planning, legal duties and responsibilities as well as good ethics in dealing with governing bodies and planning staff. A typical board member is dedicated to serving the long-term interests of the community and has a desire to preserve and improve the community’s quality of life.

Students celebrate 100 days of school

By Sherry Vogel Photos by Sherry Vogel Students at the Lincoln Elementary School in Baker celebrated their 100th day of school Jan. 29. Among the numerous fun learning activities throughout the day was the long awaited hour at the end of the day, when the children ventured outside to conduct ten stunts that revolved around the number 100.

Kindergarten through second grade students broke into groups of ten, then hopped, snapped, clapped, did jumping jacks, chachaed, patted, marched, touched toes, and danced ten times each to equal 100 movements.

Being effective, though, comes from being well informed.

Planning staff will work with the Planning Board and inform them through staff reports, state statutes and local regulations.

Currently, the city and county contract with Forrest Sanderson of Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson, as Planner. I serve as the administrative assistant in the Planning Department, and part of my duties is to gather all information and make sure it gets to board members for them to make informed decisions.

If you are interested in serving, we have two vacancies at this time on the Planning Board - a vacancy for a citizen who lives in the City of Baker and one for a citizen who lives in the Town of Plevna. The Fallon County Planning Board typically meets the first Monday of each month. Students also chose to present projects on flash floods, dust devils, air pressure, lightening, natural forest fires, formation of precipitation, fronts and dew.

A few days later you are encouraged when you receive the response of “anticipation”, a single forsythia left on your door seal. to the point and proposes, “Elope with me”. A few days go by with no response, perhaps you moved too fast. You consider sending a purple hyacinth to express “I am sorry, please forgive me”. AHERA was enacted to determine the extent of and develop solutions for any problems schools may have with asbestos.

To give you some background, asbestos has been used as a building material for many years.

It is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined primarily in Canada, South Africa, and the U.S.S.R. Asbestos properties made it an ideal building material for insulating, sound absorption, decorative plasters, fireproofing, and a variety of miscellaneous uses. There have been over 3,000 different products made using asbestos materials. EPA began action to limit uses of asbestos products in 1973 and most uses of asbestos products as building materials were banned in1978.

We had our facilities re-inspected by an accredited asbestos inspector, as required by AHERA on June 21, 2006. We have conducted the required six month reassessment evaluation of the identified asbestos-containing materials on July 16, 2015. The inspector located and rated the condition and hazard potential of asbestos materials previously identified in our facilities. The reinspection records were turned

over to an accredited management planner.

An asbestos amended management plan was developed for our facilities, which include: this notification letter, education and training of our employees, and a set of plans and procedures designed to minimize the disturbance of the asbestos containing materials and plans for regular surveillance of the asbestos-containing materials.

A copy of the asbestos management plan is available for your inspection in our administrative offices during regular office hours by appointment. Mrs. Mardi Brown is our Asbestos Program Manager and all inquires regarding the plan should be directed to her. Mrs. Brown can be reached at 406-778-3329.

We continue to implement the asbestos management plan. We are complying with federal, state, and local regulations in this area.

RIFLE RANGE SIDEWA L K / D R I V E WAY QUOTES- The Commission reviewed and discussed the quotes submitted for the Rifle Range Sidewalk/Driveway Project. The Commission made and approved the motion to accept the quote from Larry’s Construction for the project.

MINUTES APPROVAL The Commission made and approved the motion to approve the January 19-22, 2015 Commission Minutes.

MISCELLANEOUS- The Commission decided to move the Iron Horse Park bathroom closer to the Skate Park. The Commission discussed the sidewalk by the Indoor Shooting Complex. The Commission reviewed and Commissioner Baldwin, as Chairman, signed Pay Application No. 5 from KO Construction, LLC for the Iron Horse Splash Park Project in the amount of $116,141.69.

The Commission made and approved the motion to accept Dale Butori’s resignation from the Ambulance Board.

The Commission reviewed department reports, newsletters and notices; revenues received during the week; emails sent to them from state agencies and other entities that required no discussion, action or decision.

9:45AM BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT (BLM) STATE INDEMNITY CONFERENCE CALL Present: Wendy Warren, BLM Assistant Field Manager; Ryer Rens, BLM Supervisory Rangeland Management Specialist Wendy Warren and Ryer Rens phoned the Commission to notify them that ownership of some BLM land in Fallon County may be transferred to the State of Montana in accordance with the land promised to the State in the Enabling Act of 1889. The Commis-

sion, Wendy and Ryer discussed how this will affect grazing permit holders for the Fallon County land that may be included in this transfer.

10:00AM ROAD UPDATES Present: Bobby Wiedmer, Road Supervisor SHOP UPDATES- Bobby Wiedmer gave updates on the vehicle and equipment that are being serviced or repaired this week.

Schulte Mower TractorBobby and the Commission discussed the mower tractor lease from Midland Implement and potentially purchasing a tractor rather than paying the high lease.

ROAD UPDATES- Bobby said the road crew is continuing to haul gravel this week.

11:30AM BAKER LAKE RESTORATION PLAN DRAFT REVIEW AND APPROVAL Present: Rich Menger, Sanitarian; Wayne Sander, Lake Advisory Board Member Rich Menger gave the Commission the most recent draft of the Baker Lake Restoration Plan to review and the Commission approved the plan to send to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for approval. Rich and Wayne Sander discussed the project and how it may affect lakeshore landowners.

Baker resident recalls 92 years

By Sherry Vogel Gwen Setinc celebrated her 92nd birthday Feb. 2 in her family’s establishment, the Tavern. She treated her family, friends and past customers (the last two interchangeable), to 92 cent hamburgers, fries or sodas, prices that reflect her age.

Gwendolyn Seeley Schweigert Setinc was born Feb. 2, 1924 in a small house on the north side of Baker.

Her young parents, Frank and Vivian Seeley, moved to Baker from a farm in the Cabin Creek area. When Gwen was two years old, her 27 year old father was killed in an industrial accident at the Carbon Plant east of Baker.

He had caught his pant leg in a conveyor belt, causing his fatal injuries.

Vivian, Gwen’s mother, was left to raise four children. She later met and married Dwayne Bruce. Gwen commented, “It was really something to think he would take on the responsibility of four kids.”

Growing up a “Depression kid”, Gwen experienced some hungry times. She remembers her mother sending her to the local butcher shop to ask the meat cutter for a bone for her dog. She would hurry home with the bone so her mother could make soup. She added, “We also ate a lot of peas and beans.”

Although times were tough, she has many good memories of growing up in Baker. The Baker Lake provided many hours of entertainment. At the time there was a cabana on a sandy beach where swimmers could change their swimsuits and there was also a diving board. This was all located close to where the Bank of Baker is today. “One time,” Gwen recalled, “I decided to dive to the very bottom. Boy, I almost drowned. It was really, really deep back then.”

She added, “Another time, I pushed my brother Jack off the diving board. He nearly drowned. He still talks about that.”

The Lake Theatre was also a fun place to go especially if they were showing a Shirley Temple movie. But Gwen and her friends didn’t always have the ten cents it cost to buy a ticket. They would purchase one ticket and that person would go in, sneak behind the stage and open the back door to allow the others to creep in to the nearest seat and sit low.

Gwen’s lifelong career in the restaurant business began in 1936 when she was just 12 years old. She worked for Lew Jim and a waiter named Charley in the first Chinese restaurant in Baker. It was a short lived job. Once when the cook got excited he became loud and threw a spoon.

This scared the young Gwen

and she ran home.

Later in high school, Gwen became a BHS girls’ basketball star. She played forward on a team with Vivian Koehler, Lois Ferguson and Frances Hythecker. Baker at the time was a Class C school and played Ekalaka and Plevna.

In 1941, Gwen married Fred Schweigert. They were blessed with two sons, Robert and Kenneth. Fred passed away when the marriage was yet young.

Later, in 1946, she met and married Martin Setinc in Baker. They added three more children to their family Sharon, Pam and Craig. Martin and Gwen enjoyed square dancing together. They traveled with five other couples to dances as far away as Dickinson.

Gwen was also an avid bowler. During her 50 year bowling career, she bowled on a number of women’s leagues including: Standard Service Station, Caroline’s Beauty Shop, Lawler Drug, Quenzer Ford, and the Baker Club. One year at an Oilfield Tournament, she rolled six strikes in a row!

In 1954, the Setincs purchased the Kit Kat Club, a small eatery on the peninsula of the lake, from Bill Campbell. This was located where the Lakefront RV Park is today. In 1960, they leased

this business to other operators. At one time it was known as the Peanut Shack.

In 1971, she purchased the Tavern Bar from Mildred Jackson. She owned and operated it until 1991, then she sold it to her daughter, Pam, and husband, Tom Owens.

Not one to sit and watch the “boob tube”, she continued to work there till just four years ago, when she retired at age 88.

Looking much younger than her 92 years, it’s hard to imagine she is the grandmother to 19, great-grandmother to 21 and great-great-grandmother to 5 children.

When asked to what she
