Hometown Christmas memories - Baker in the 1960s By Sherry Vogel Christmas back in the early 60s around the second oilfield boom era of Baker is a treasured memory of many. WWII and early boomers - read ahead to learn just what those kids of yours were thinking during ‘the most wonderful time of the year’. Boomers and tail-enders - read on and relive that Christmas season of your early childhood during the early 1960s when ‘you saw mommy kissing Santa Claus’. Gen X and Ys, you may relate as your Boomer parents probably passed on to you some of the same holiday traditions their parents passed on to them. The Millennials and younger might not totally get it. Instead, even come to believe that children back then were poverty-stricken and must have been bored out of their minds. In the early 1960s, many families still lived on farms. Town dwellers inhabited much smaller homes often times only onetwo bedroom houses built in the late 1940s after the war. It was common that families had three to six kids sharing the same bedrooms, often times even sharing the same bed. Millennials don’t feel sorry for them - it was really a big comfort to have a sister or brother nearby in case that monster under the bed tried to grab a foot (hopefully theirs). Many a pillow fight was made possible after moms and dads were out of sight. They made do with one telephone, which was mounted on
the wall or on an end table connected by a long cord to the wall. Hence, no privacy to speak of. Often times not only other family members gathered around to listen to the conversation, but if you were on a country line more often than not many neighbors listened in, too. Back then, if the phone rang and nobody was in the house, no problem. If it was important they would call back. Those lucky enough to own a television got one channel: KXGN channel 8 Glendive and later KDIX channel 2 Dickinson. The television was not just ‘turned on’ but needed to be ‘tuned in’. Tall rabbit ears on the top of the set needed adjustment if one didn’t have a towering antennae on top of the house picking up broadcast signals. In the 60s, the TV was rarely on during the daytime. The six o’clock news with Walter Cronkite was watched by fathers coming home from work and listened to by mothers as they rushed to get the families’ supper on the table. Then shut off while the family ate their supper together. After the supper dishes were washed, the entire family would sit down together to enjoy a family Christmas variety show. Christmas time was the best time of year to watch TV because of the special Christmas programs. Perry Como, Andy Williams and Bing Cosby crooned such tunes as The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, A Holly Jolly Christmas, White
Christmas, and A Winter Wonderland. The Lawrence Welk Show was extra special as beautiful, young talented men and women were dressed in elaborate holiday costumes singing new and old Christmas carols as champagne bubbles floated through the air. Even Christmas commercials were exciting to watch as a puppet Santa might suddenly appear riding a ‘Noel-co” shaver across the nine inch screen of the television as jingle bells jingled in the background. Coke commercials were classic as a jolly, rosy cheeked, rotund Santa might be viewed enjoying an eight ounce ‘bottle’ of cola, the only serving size back then. A bottle of soda or pop, as it was often called, was a treat. A child might get two or three bottles a year on a special occasion. Some children had a bottle of pop high on their Santa wish list. With today’s modern technology enabled by the internet and fancy devices like iPad, iPhone and laptop computers the ‘information highway’ might have been considered an inference to some long two-way state road connecting two towns together. Christmas shopping trips out of town were rare. People shopped at home. They shopped Baker stores with names like Samsel’s, Eilek’s, Russell’s, Ben Franklin, Red Owl Store, Super Valu, L. Merry Christmas Baker! By Pastor Mike Davis, Lakeview Baptist Church As we consider Christmas this year I would like to encourage all of us to remember why we celebrate. The presents are fun, the decorations are beautiful, and the food is delicious; and the time we spend with family and friends can’t be replaced. But is that what Christmas is all about? Why is it that December seems to bring with it a fair amount of stress? I would like to answer my questions with a simple answer. God on this day offered mankind a gift. It didn’t come in a fancy box with a bow on it, and it wasn’t found under a tree. It didn’t come from Santa, or a store, it came from heaven. God manifested Himself in the form of a baby to fulfill the Bible prophesy that a savior would be born of a virgin so that those who would believe in Him (Jesus) would be saved. Now through the birth of Jesus we have Hope, Joy, Peace, Love and Assurance of eternal life. If we were to remember that we are to love those around us, and love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, it might just help us to enjoy this Christmas a lot more. Trusting in Jesus gives us eternal life. Focusing on that day will help us to keep what is important important, and will make this Christmas a day we will never forget. Getting and giving presents is not a bad thing, unless it’s the most important thing. God loves each one of us and wants us to have life and have it abundantly. But without Jesus there is no abundant life. Please don’t let the blessings of Jesus pass you by because you are more focused on the commercial end of Christmas than the spiritual. The birth of Jesus is one of the most significant days in the history of man second only to the creation of mankind. Thank you God for your gift of eternal life Jesus Christ. I pray for each person on this earth that this Christmas would take on a new meaning. One with Jesus being the center of attention. Amen.

By Sherry Vogel Weather conditions Dec. 9 couldn’t have been more favorable for lining up the floats entered in Baker’s Christmas Parade of Lights. It was unusually warm for a Montana winter’s night and the sky was clear. The Fallon Medical Complex parking lot was abuzz as shepherds dressed, angels sprouted halos and wings, three wisemen mounted their steeds, and Joseph helped Mary upon a donkey. As generators kicked on, every float was aglow. Preschoolers, Cub Scouts, Santa and elves took their places under the watchful eye of some very well dressed mannequins. The entourage cruised out of the parking lot led by a convoy of law enforcement vehicles and fire trucks as the sky spit small drops of rain, and the night air began to dance. As the glistening group advanced up Third Street and turned the corner onto Railroad Ave., strong gusts of wind propelled them forward onto Main Street where enthusiastic crowds awaited. Ten organizations participated this year, many of them gifting the children with candy. They were Lakeview Baptist Church, Changed for Life Church, Baker Assembly of God Church, Medicine Rocks Church, Baker Rec Department, Brightside Day Care, Eastern Montana Community Health Center, WBI Energy Resources, Faith Home Schooling Group, and Boy Scout Troop #256. This enjoyable parade was the grand finale of a very busy ‘Countdown to Christmas’ day of celebration.

Jingle Bell Bingo winners for week number two and three are Joyce Jardee, Lynne Miller, Carol Hardenbrook, and Brenda Dietz. . . Baker was blasted with a three day blizzard last week. Temperatures were cold and the wind chill factor was extremely dangerous. It’s hard to determine how much snow fell because the wind moved it around so much. Highway 7 between Baker and Ekalaka was closed until the cuts could be cleared out. . . Bank of Baker will honor Shirley O’Connor with a retirement open house Dec. 29. . . New members inducted into the Plevna chapter of the National Honor Society were George Sparks, Justin O’Connor, Katie Gray, Cassandra Klos, and Rebecca Weidmer. . . It includes letters to Santa, poems and Christmas stories. 20 YEARS AGO Friday, December 22, 1995Many military personnel are being sent to Bosnia at this time. Anyone wishing to have a friend or relative’s address printed in the paper so these service people can receive mail from home need only to contact the Times Office and the military addresses will be printed free of charge. . . Chemotherapy is now available at Fallon Medical Complex. George Chavez, R.N., is the primary chemotherapy nurse. Both he and Robin Wright, R.N., received specialized training. . . Lynda Herbst, president of the Baker Jaycees, is pictured presenting Alice Heiser, president of the Baker Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, a check for $600. This check was the direct result of the rifle raffle and spaghetti supper the Jaycees held to earn money to help pay for the new Christmas lights. . . Paige O’Connor, a sophomore at Plevna High School, won second place in the annual Mid-Rivers essay
contest. She won $50 from Mid-Rivers. . . Toys for Tots will be available for needy families and may be picked up at the Kent Ehret residence. 30 YEARS AGO Thursday, December 19, 1985 - According to County Assessor Curt Huether, between the years of 1981 and 1985, 18 businesses ceased to exist but eleven new ones opened their doors - so the economy of Baker in the past five years has not been as bleak as suspicioned. . . During the week of Nov. 12-17, three members of the Baker FFA - Ward Clark, Gary Singer and Quint Wiseman attended the 58th National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. . . Seven Spartan football players were honored for their superior athletic ability by being awarded spots on the All-State Team. Those players are Doug Bechtold, James Herbst, Quenton Hickey, Dave Schweigert, Dan Stanton, Sean Smith, and Mitch Domagala. . . Frank and Ellen Gonsioroski celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 8. 40 YEARS AGO Thursday, December 18, 1975 - Baker wrestlers came back from the Laurel tournament with wins for the local team. Tom Madler placed fourth in the 155 lb. class and John Beach was the heavyweight champion. . . Winners of the Santa dolls drawn this week by the Chamber of Commerce were Michelle Gawryluk, Barbara Bender, Rhonda Askin, Lisa Johnson, Jerry Losing, Misty Lynn Sparks, Jerad Singer, James Miller, John Sieler, Leighton Redmond, Julie Bruha, David Schweigert, Richard Whitmore, Alice Abrams, and Frankie Welch of Ludlow, SD. . . . Rev. Richard M. Babcock of Antioch, CA, is the newly elected pastor of the Assembly of God Church. He succeeds former Pastor Alan Warneke. . Cenex has announced plans to build a Soil Service Center in Baker. . . Dec. 23, the senior class and student council are sponsoring a “Winter Formal” with candidates from each class vying for king and queen. Candidates are Kevin Miller and Angie Schell freshman class, Bret Mayo and Terry Anderson - sophomore class, Richard Curry and Connie Johnson - junior class, and Steve Baldwin and Kathy Crippen - senior class.
50 YEARS AGO Thursday, December 16, 1965 -- Baker Homemakers held their annual Christmas party at the Margaret Lathrop home Monday where members brought money to spend on a gift for the new nursing home. . . Mrs. Art Kuehn celebrated her 80th birthday recently along with her 20th anniversary of being in Baker and operating Eilek’s Ready Wear. 60 YEARS AGO Thursday, December 15, 1955 -- The Ford Foundation Monday in one stroke gave away a half a billion dollars to colleges and hospitals of which the Fallon County Hospital received $10,000. . . Fallon County March of Dimes director, R.R. Stevens, announced that Danny Kohler has been named chairman of Teens Against Polio, the newest addition to the ranks of the March of Dimes. . . Baker Woman’s Club held their annual Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Harry Schenck Tuesday evening with Mrs. Howard Yokley presiding. The program was presented by Mrs. George Severson. 70 YEARS AGO Thursday, December 13, 1945 -- Eager beavers were hard at work this week in the new Gambles store putting into place and unpacking fixtures and arranging new merchandise for their formal opening. Edgar Boucher is the new owner. . . The Rev. A.W. Allen and Fred Korneychuck, church trustees of the Baptist Church, spent Tuesday in Miles City consulting an architect about plans for a church building to be erected next summer. . . Karl Hepperle, Plevna, lies in a Billings hospital with internal injuries sustained in a car accident enroute to Baker from Billings. 80 YEARS AGO Thursday, December 19, 1935 -- Governor Cooney, Montana’s ninth governor, a 53 year old cowboy, died Sunday night in Great Falls from a heart attack. Elmer Holt is sworn in. . . Henry Jensen, Henry Beckman, Albert Gustafson, Alfred Lunder and O. Jacobson completed the Lutheran parsonage. It is now a comfortable five room dwelling. . . A white Christmas is betokened unless the temperature rises too much.

Many wear their finest clothes to special dinners, parties and other food and drink related events, only to be disappointed by spilling or dropping food on their best garments. Following are a few suggestions of how to remove some common holiday stains. • Alcohol beverage stains are best treated by immediately sponging the spill, then soaking in a solution of one quart warm water, one-half teaspoon detergent and one tablespoon white vinegar for 15 minutes. rinse with water. If stain remains, sponge with alcohol, rinse thoroughly and launder. Add bleach, chlorine-type if safe for fabric, to wash water. • Gravy or cosmetics: Sponge with dry cleaning solvent or waterless hand cleaner. Rinse with water. Air dry. Apply detergent to stain, launder or if available treat with a pre-wash spot and stain remover; launder. • Perspiration markings: Sponge or soak stain in cool water. Apply detergent to stain and launder. If odor remains, rub with bar of deodorant soap and launder again or soak overnight in a quarter of warm water with four tablespoons of salt. Rinse and re-launder. Color may be restored with ammonia (new stains) or use vinegar (old stains). • Wax, candle drippings: Scrape excess from fabric with dull knife. Place stain between paper towels and press with warm iron to remove wax. Sponge with dry cleaning solvent or waterless hand cleaner. Rinse with water. Apply detergent to stain, launder using hot water and chlorine-type bleach if safe for fabric. • Soft drink spills: Same procedure as first half of alcoholic beverage procedure minus the sponging with alcohol. Be aware if soft drink stains are allowed to remain in fabric too long, they may result in permanent yellowing.

Ernest Scheetz
Ernest “Ernie” Scheetz, age 73, passed away peacefully at his home in Glendive Dec. 14, 2015, with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Rosary services were held Dec. 16 at Silha Funeral Home in Glendive with Bill Breitbach officiating. Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 17, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive with Father Francis Schreiber officiating. Rite of Committal was held in the Dawson County Cemetery in Glendive. Silha Funeral Home of Glendive was in charge of arrangements. Ernie was born May 21, 1942, in Flasher, N.D., the son of John and Ermentina (Doll) Scheetz. He was raised and educated in Flasher where he graduated from Flasher High School with the class of 1962. Throughout Ernie’s life he was employed at Daniels Oilfield Service, Northern Line Layers, CHS (Cenex), and retired from Crawford Construction as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. Ernie met and later married Barbara Volk on Sept. 28, 1963, in Flasher and to this union three children were born: Shandon, Ernie and Glenda. He was very active in his children’s lives and then his grandchildren’s lives. Ernie would attend sporting events or anything his grandchildren were in to support them. He was a Mr. Fixit and could just about fix anything. He enjoyed traveling to Canada and Hawaii, watching college games, and the Rough Riders in the CFL, and collecting items. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ermentina; and siblings, Edmund Scheetz and Jeanette Scheetz. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Scheetz, of Glendive; children, Shandon Ray Scheetz (fiance Jennifer) of Glendive, Ernie (Cindy) Scheetz of Baker, and Glenda Katherine (Kevin) Mitchell of Glendive; ten grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; siblings, Arlene Heim and friend Monty of Baker, Edward A. Scheetz of Spanaway, Wash., and James J. (Charlene) Scheetz of Bismarck, N.D.; numerous nieces and nephews. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at: www.silhafuneralhomes.com.

At Christmas time most children excitedly awaited the arrival of the Montgomery Wards Christmas Wish Book or the JC Penney, Sears or Spiegel Christmas Edition catalogs so they could decide what to ask Santa for in their handwritten Santa Claus letter. The Christmas Wish Book had pictures of the latest toy inventions of the year. The glossy colorful cover would often have a delighted, smiling child gazing at a beautifully wrapped present, which played into the fantasy of what might await any child. Their expectations many times outweighed their reality. A child usually received one toy and perhaps a needed piece of clothing like a pair of shoes, snow boots, or pajamas. Boys still loved to play war and girls still loved kitchen sets. Toy manufacturers were making toys electronic anyway possible because if it was electric that meant it was new. New that year was the Easy Bake Oven that generated heat from a 100 watt bulb to bake a small cake in a small round metal pan. Boys that year were thrilled to receive Mattel’s GI Joe, an eleven inch soldier doll with 11 movable parts. He was dressed in a camo uniform, fully equipped with dog tags, rifle, and a training manual. A little girl might hope for a Mattel’s Chatty Cathy, world’s most famous talking doll. Pull Chatty’s ring and she would spurt out, “Please take me with you”. It was magical and, of course, she never got left home. Etch-A-Sketch was popular. A child turned the knobs to create lines, circles, and diagonals and then if by magic when it was shaken the screen would clear and one could start over again. Remco Toy Co. made Firebird 99. Although a much more pricey toy at $6.44, a fortunate child could have a dash so he could drive right along with dad. Fisher Price barn yard sets, Hasbro’s Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head, and Tonka dump trucks with a hydraulic bed were at the top of many lists. Teenagers, many of them still wanting to believe in Santa, wanted a transistor radio advertised as “fits in your pocket to let you listen to all your favorite stations”. They were even equipped with ‘crystalized’ earplugs, all for $4.99. Teenagers also asked for the latest 45 rpm record. Songs by Elvis Presley such as ‘Let Me Be Your Teddy Bear’ were in high demand. Teenage boys asked for The Baking Soda Submarine or a Gilbert Chemistry Set. Surprisingly, the chemistry set actually contained the chemicals that were highly flammable such as ammonium nitrate and potassium permanganate. Other toys on a child’s wish list were: Erector Set, Lincoln Logs, Pot-Holder Loom Set, Spirography, toy Doctor and Nurse Kits, metal doll houses or gas stations, and the latest rage Mattel’s Major Matt Mason, “Man in Space”. When local Christmas trees arrived on the Boy Scout lot, it was a day to celebrate! If you didn’t go out in the country to
cut down your own tree, Baker’s only supply of cut trees were sold as the annual fundraiser for the pack. Back in the early 1960s, Boy Scouts sold trees down in the older wooden building between the American Legion and the old Economy Grocery Store. The night air would be frigid cold, as Bing Crosby sang ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’, the family bundled in woolen coats, scarves, hats and mittens piled into the family car to bring that yuletide tree home. A child patiently awaited while watching the vaporized breath of the uniformed Eagle Scout salesman as he cut the strings off the selected tree and shook it twice hard on the ground to drop its branches for closer inspection. Children were always happy to pile back into the car while dad placed that prized tree in the trunk or on top of the automobile. Once home, daddy and the boys would take out the saw to make a fresh cut on the bottom of the stump. They carefully placed the tree in the red and green metal stand and tightened the three silver screws. It was always a thrill to have a real live tree standing right in your very own living room. The evening was thoroughly enjoyable as parents brought store boxes full of treasured Christmas ornaments from the attic or basement. Dad went to work untangling strings of colored glass bulbs. Sometimes this took longer than a child wanted it to. If only one light in the string was burned out, it had to be found or the entire string wouldn’t light. Next came the set of cherished shiny glass baubles dusted in glitter. A few handmade ornaments from school brought out year after year were greeted like long lost friends. Next came the garland often times handmade of red and green construction paper rings, popcorn strings, or store bought silver tinsel ropes. Then, finally came the laying on of the
long thin pieces of shiny tinsel. These were carefully and individually laid piece by piece on each branch to resemble glistening icicles … well the process became tedious … then one child, often a brother, would throw caution to the wind, literally. He would take a handful of the tinsel and toss it in the general direction of the tree. Hopefully catching the edge of a branch as it rapidly fell in a downward descent. Now that could be a dangerous maneuver if an older sibling wanted it to look ‘just perfect’. This could start a family brawl. As siblings chose sides, mother would loudly break into song … ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ emphasizing the sentence “He is making his list and checking it twice to see who is naughty or nice”. This was reminder enough that kids should be on their very best behavior. The finishing touch was the Christmas tree topper. It might be a star, an angel, or the classic temple shaped, sharp pointed fragile glass bauble. One lucky well-behaved (or light) child would be lifted to the top of the tree to crown it. Then the long awaited moment … the shutting off of the lights so the family could “ooh and aah” over the beautiful lighted glow of that sparkling tree. Decorating wasn’t complete till the stockings were ‘hung by the chimney with care’. What if there wasn’t a chimney or fireplace? Families could buy a corrugated cardboard fireplace at the Ben Franklin store or any Christmas catalog. This fireplace would be outfitted with a rotating paper flame that would roll around a light bulb. This seasonal piece of furniture sold for $2.49 and would be carefully folded up and used year after year. It never dawned on a young child that with no chimney Santa couldn’t possible come down that fireplace. Children would

leave cookies and milk on the cardboard hearth and each year Santa would take a bite of the cookie. Proof that he wasn’t particular whether it was a brick or a cardboard fireplace that he slid down. As Christmas drew near, Sunday schools were busily preparing their annual Christmas Eve Children’s Pageant. It was always an honor to be chosen for a part. Everyone was included. Older students had speaking parts and often times played Mary, Joseph or one of the Three Wisemen. All of the younger children were dressed as angels or shepherds. Angel robes were sewn from white sheets and halos were bent metal clothes hangers covered in tin foil as were the cardboard wings. The young shepherds were decked out in burlap bags tied with twine. Unbeknown to them they were wearing mother’s dishtowel tied to their heads for a head covering. For a small child it was often a challenge to see beyond the bright stage lights to catch a glimpse of mama or daddy or a cherished grandparent. Once the dear relative was spotted, an excited boy or girl might cover their eyes with the back of one hand as the other hand eagerly waved at their loved one. The child was oblivious to the laughter of the crowd. It was a special wonderful night to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus and to act out His story each and every year. After the program, many a child anxiously awaited the ‘treat bags’ gifted to each one. They eagerly received the brown paper bag filled with salted shelled peanuts, a few pieces of hard ribbon candy, a popcorn ball, an apple or orange, and one chocolate covered white

cream drop. It was tradition for many a family to drive around town after the Christmas pageant to view the giant decorated community Christmas tree that used to stand on the end of Main Street. It was located where the deer statue stands today. Another practice of families was to drive around town and look at the Christmas trees that were displayed in the picture windows of many of the homes. Families differed as they do today whether they opened their family gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Some families having arrived home after the Christmas pageant would be pleasantly surprised that Santa had been there while they were out and had left the toy on their wish list. It never dawned on the young child that while they awaited their candy bag and then returned their costumes to the choir room that a parent had rushed home to play Santa. Usually around eight years of age, after being tricked one too many times, the young child started urging their father to “hurry home, we don’t want to miss Santa”. Nothing smells as good as a new doll on Christmas, nor do new wheels run across the floor as smoothly as on a brand new race car or truck. Little children of the 60s fell fast asleep on Christmas night contently dreaming of playing with their new toy for the next year to come. It is truly a blessed time of year for children, families, and entire communities as memories are made and traditions bind our hearts together. Sweet dream, Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night!

Spartan Basketball By Austin Braun The Baker Spartan boys’ basketball team traveled to Glasgow Dec. 11 to face off with the Scotties for their first game of the season. The Spartans won the game, 46-35. In the first quarter, Baker outscored Glasgow 12-8, but there was a different story written in the second quarter as Glasgow outscored Baker 15-12. The Spartans went into the half 24-23 and never looked back. The Spartans only allowed four points in the third quarter and outscored the Scotties 11-4. In the final quarter of the game, Baker only allowed Glasgow to score 8 to their 11. tans walked off their home court with a win as they improved to 2-0 on the season. Baker defeated Roundup 5645. Defense was the story of the first quarter with both teams only allowing eight and nine points, but the Spartan defense thrived in the second quarter when they only allowed seven points to their 18, going into the half up 27-15. The story was the same in the third quarter as the Spartans only allowed another eight points to their eleven. The fourth quarter was all offense as Roundup scored 22 and Baker score 18 points. Isaac Rost (Roy & Melissa) took first place in Human Resource Management and Prepared Speech, Taylyn Dukart (Kevin and Jennifer), who took first in Computer Modeling. Paul Wang (Dean & Karen), Keegan Kary (Eric & Kori), Andrew Craft (Brad & Hannah Lecoe), and Terrell Koenig (the late Dustin & Kandi Koenig) all made it to finals and placed first by defeating some very tough competitors; Andrew and Paul had lost to some earlier in the season, but beat them this time.

Cougar Den completion December 11, the second grade students were able to complete their Cougar Den project. The class created a business where they sold snacks and school supplies after lunch. Their goal was to make a profit and use the money to purchase items for Christmas meals. The students took a trip to Reynolds in Baker to select food items. Mrs. Benner, Andrea Rieger, Mrs. Bidwell and Plevna’s National Honor Society members Dylan Sander, Jessica Stockett and Nicole Allerdings guided the students in choosing products with the best value.
The class was divided into three groups and each group had a budget of $5 to buy enough ham, stove top stuffing, canned yams, instant mashed potatoes, and cookie mix to feed three families. After purchasing these items, the group visited the Community Cupboard. Tiffany Davis aided the students in filling bags with food for Christmas dinners. The class learned how the Community Cupboard receives donations from several sources to be able to provide food for those in need. The second graders enjoyed this project as it was a unique way to give during the holiday season.
First grade Christmas project By Nicole Allerdings Mrs. Tunby’s first grade students have been learning about Christmas traditions. They discussed special foods made during Christmas. December 14, the students were able to create their own Christmas treats. They spread melted almond bark on pretzel rods and covered them with sprinkles. Each student also crafted a Christmas tree using a waffle cone, green frosting and red candies. The class also completed a project about gingerbread men. They used colored candy pieces and gingerbread men to decorate a gingerbread house. SOLAR BEE CONTRACTThe Commission discussed continuing to have Solar Bee service the County’s Solar circulators for Baker Lake and will schedule a conference call with a Solar Bee representative to discuss the contract and fee. FORMS- The Commission reviewed and signed the New Hire Approval Forms authorizing Lori Hall and Michael Heiser to be hired as Emergency Communications Dispatcher/Detention Officers in the Dispatch Department. The Commission reviewed and signed the Change of Rate of Pay Approval Form increasing Jessie Johnson’s hours from 24 hours per week to 36 hours per week in the Dispatch Department. CORRESPONDENCE Road Related- The Commission received a letter from Dick Malcolm, Patty Malcolm and Chad Follmer regarding the problems they have with the Big Hill Road. Extension Department- The Commission received a letter from Sharon Schwartz, 4-H Program Assistant, stating she will be resigning from her position. Westmore Bridge Replacement- Shannon Hewson, Brosz Engineering, gave the Commission a copy of the email correspondence between him and Matt Rugg with MT Fish, Wildlife & Parks regarding the hydraulic analysis of the Westmore Bridge Replacement for them to review. Triangle Park Parking LotBobby said the parking lot is complete. Big Hill Road- The Commission gave Bobby a copy of the letter they received from Dick Malcolm, Patty Malcolm and Chad Follmer regarding issues with the Big Hill Road and they discussed it. 10:25AM - Commissioner Baldwin excused himself to attend a funeral. Dave Havens left the meeting also. 11:00AM GRAVEL BID OPENING Present: Bobby Wiedmer, Road Supervisor; Jasen Wyrick, Wyrick Construction The Commission opened a bid for 100,000 yards of gravel from Nelcon Inc. in the amount of $3,650,000. The Commission opened a bid for 100,000 yards of gravel from Ward Crushing in the amount of $10,345,000. The Commission opened a bid for 100,000 yards of gravel from Wyrick Construction in the amount of $950,000 with the option of purchasing the gravel in one pile versus two. Darcy said the Commission could purchase a little more than 100,000 yards since the bid specs said “approximately” 100,000 yards. The Commission made and approved the motion to accept Wyrick Construction’s bid for 120,000 yards of gravel at $9.50/yard at two locations within 30 miles of Baker. Land Leases- The Commission reviewed the spreadsheet Darcy made showing the land lease rates based on AUM versus acreage. Commissioner Baldwin said he has talked to several people about charging $4/acre and everyone said that was a low price. The Commission agreed and said they want to stay with the $4/acre rate. Miscellaneous - Darcy and the Commission discussed the Commission writing a letter to the Fallon County Times in response to the Administrator Officer article. Christmas Memory
Kindergarten traditions A tradition can be defined as “passing on beliefs, ideas, or customs from generation to generation”. Beginning December 7th and continuing through the 23rd, the kindergarten students from Mrs. Wedemeyer’s class will learn about traditions that can be observed this time of year, encompassing Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Los Posadas, and more. A fun and lighthearted tradition Mrs. Wedemeyer takes time to teach about each year is gingerbread. The class listens to stories including “Gingerbread Baby” by Jan Brett, “The Gingerbread Pirates” by Kristin Kladstrup, and “A Cookie for Santa” by Stephanie Shaw. In addition, each student makes a gingerbread boy or girl ornament, and for the first time this year each student built his or her own graham cracker gingerbread house. “The hope is that these kindergarten students look back and remember some of these traditions learned and celebrated during this time of year,” says Mrs. Wedemeyer.

By Janet Enos My father, Gilbert Glockzien, was raised in a German community of Berlin, Wisconsin. During the First World war, my grandfather changed the name to Clocksene as being German wasn’t too popular at that time. I was raised in a family of four girls, all born in a different state. My youngest sister, Joan, was born in the Nason house in Baker. Now for my Christmas memories. Our Christmas tree was decorated with candles. We had candle holders that snapped on the tree. Then we had popcorn garlands that we made by stringing popcorn. On Christmas Eve, my father would say I think I hear jingle bells and would suggest we look outside to see if Santa had left us something. When we’d look, we would find a large box with a gift for each of us. Our one aunt would give us each a large orange for Christmas and one year she gave us each a box of chocolate covered cherries! A few years later, my father borrowed the Santa suit from the country school and dressed up as Santa on Christmas Eve. My sister Jo said, “He has daddy’s shoes”. I don’t know if she connected that it was our dad or not. We older girls knew. School Christmas programs were held in the afternoon. The sack of candy we got after the program was exciting. It seemed like we had lots of snow then. A bobsled and team of horses was our transportation. We sat in the hay covered by a horse robe which our grandfather had given us.

Baker Kindergarten We read the book “Santa’s Stuck” by Rhonda Gowler Greene. In this story Santa gets stuck in someone’s chimney after eating too many Christmas treats left by the children. After listening to the story, students were asked to tell how they would help Santa if he got stuck in their chimney. Their answers are as follows. If Santa was stuck in my chimney, I would: Kyson Barth - pull him out by his legs. Kynlie Moore - wake everyone up to help push him out. He would pop right out! Abbie Mills - grab my par-
