school,” he recalled. “Christmas day we rolled in there and I was like ‘Wow, my kids are at home eating and these kids are standing out in the rain wanting something to eat.’” “It made me appreciate America when I got over there. It was pretty bleak. It was pretty sad to see,” Sargent Losing said as he explained the living conditions in Kirkuk, Iraq. During his deployment he saw undrinkable water, inadequate healthcare, and unsafe electrical. “A lot of times it was just simply wires run over a pole or something. Basically, all they had was lights in their house. They had a control panel there and they just started sticking wires in it and running it to their houses.” “People all seemed to be happy there, for the most part. People would tell you that they didn’t want to fight, all they wanted to do was have an education, a job, and peace. They didn’t want any

Jerry Losing, a Baker native, enlisted in the National Guard in 1981 after graduating from Baker High School in 1980. Sargent Losing is one of the many veterans in our community that we are able to thank, honor, and regard this coming Veteran’s Day, Monday, November 11th. Sargent Losing, husband of Jill Whiteman and father of Chandler and Spencer Losing, served for almost three decades. The beginning of his service was spent locally, filling in for employees at Pine Hills Juvenile Facility in Miles City, Montana during a time when they were understaffed due to a wage discrepancy. He also traveled to the Western side of the state to fight fire in between Helena and Townsend. Sargent Losing had an 18-month deployment, with 12 of those months spent in

This year’s recipients, Sons of the American Legion, Green Horn Shooting Sports Program, Baker Wrestling Club, Beaver Creek Rendezvous, Ekalaka Fire Dept. and Baker Lions Club, will share the proceeds from this year’s Wild Game Feed. Like always, there will be several guns raffled off and other prizes given away. There will also be guided antelope hunts in Colorado, hog hunts in Oklahoma as well as other hunts and a trip to the NFR in Vegas.

Despite strong reports from Wall Street and news of low unemployment, families are struggling to get by throughout Fallon County, as well as throughout the country. One in eight Americans - 42 million people - still struggle to get enough to eat. And while that number has been going down recently, hunger appears to be getting worse in some economically distressed areas, especially in rural communities. It’s a subject that is hard to think about. Many of these families have two working adults in the home and just don’t have enough to make it between paychecks without the cupboards getting bare. Sometimes it’s a disability or serious health problem that suddenly changes the family finances or the death of the sole provider that necessitates temporary assistance.
Or sometimes it’s a single parent trying to provide for their children. Whatever the circumstance, for some, the choice between making the rent and buying groceries is rarely that far away. The local donations to the Community Cupboard have made the difference between full stomachs or their families going hungry. “One thing that

I have always found very special about our food cupboard in Fallon County is that it is solely supported by the generosity of our community,” said Angel Wyrwas, Co-coordinator for the Community Cupboard. “This means that people don’t have to fill out a bunch of forms verifying their income to receive food. No state or federal program is tracking their information.” “It’s very simple to receive a food box,” continued Angel. “People just call the Baker Senior Center at 406-7782600 to request a food box and set up a time to pick up their supplies. We ask them to sign our book so we can track how much the Cupboard is being used and if needs are greater at certain times of the year.” The Cupboard tries to provide food appropriate for the
