A group of car enthusiasts visited Baker this past weekend and stopped for a tour of the local car museum, Prairie Rose Classics. They were planning to head west, all driving Fords built prior to 1920. The travelers were from all over the country as well as Canada. Arizona, Montana, Colorado and Arkansas were some of the states they represented.

Poll Election for the City of Baker (Ward 2) only

City of Baker Municipal General Election will be held as a poll election at the Fallon County Exhibit Hall in Baker, MT, on November 5, 2019.

Registered voters in WARD 2 ONLY that are not on the absentee list are eligible to vote at the polling place.

Absentee List: If you are on the absentee list for Ward 2 your ballot will go out in the mail on October 16, 2019. If you do not know what Ward you are located in or if you are on the absentee list, you may call the election administrators office at 406778-7106.

Flu shot clinic

The Fallon County Health Department will hold a Flu Shot Clinic at the Fallon County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall, Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come out and get their flu shot.

The health department will be testing the pod site (Point of Dispensing).

Please bring your insurance card. If you do not have insurance the cost will be: Pediatric (6 months - 3 years) $40; Regular (3 years and up) $40; and High Dose (65 and over) $65.

2019 Homecoming Royalty

The gloomy skies of Sept. 30 could not compare to the atmosphere inside the High School Gym. The student body eagerly listened as Spartanette hostesses Macy Varner and Addison Bryan introduced the Homecoming crown bearers and candidates. First graders Treylan Harbaugh and Kazden Hoversland led the excited royalty into the gym. The first to enter the gym was Trent Collins escorting Halle Burdick. Following was Shelby Moore escorted by Teight Madler. Next up was Macee Hadley with her escort Riley O’Donnell.

Last but not least was Jacob Wang escorting

his sister Katie Wang. The tension was high as the four boys stood in front of the audience.

After much anticipation, Addison placed the crown on Teight Madler, whose father, Rick Madler, had won the title of King 35 years ago.

In turn, Teight then had the honor of crowning the Queen. The girls waited with bated breath to see who would be receiving the crown. All was revealed as Teight placed the crown upon Katie Wang as the 2019 Homecoming Queen.

The band concluded the ceremony with the school song. As the students exited the gym, it was clear that this was only the beginning of a fun-filled week.

Labor and Industry (DLI) to adjust the Montana minimum wage for inflation using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Consumers (CPI-U).

An estimated 10,200 Montana workers, or 2.2% of the workforce, received hourly wages less than $8.65 per hour in 2019 and are likely to receive higher wages due to the 2020 minimum wage increase.

In 2018, the industry with the largest number of workers earning minimum wage was the accommodations and food services industry followed by the retail trade industry.

The minimum wage is determined by taking the current minimum wage of $8.50 and increasing it by the CPI-U increase from August of 2018 to August 2019. The CPI-U increased by 1.75% over the year ending August 2019. To keep the minimum wage at the same purchasing power as the prior year, the wage should increase by $0.148 per hour. The resulting wage is $8.648 and statute specifies that the wage must be rounded to the nearest 5 cents. OCtOber 6 - 12

The City of Baker has received funding from the Montana Department of Commerce Community Development Block Grant to rehabilitate owner occupied and rental homes in Baker. . .2009 Homecoming candidates are: Dalton Arnell, Bryce Kramlick, Kelby Newell, Kelsey Hadley, Bryan Overton, Medori Gray, Bailey Woolington and Alyssa Mitchell. . .A surprise 35th wedding anniversary celebration will be held for Lee and Linda Moore Oct. 2. . .Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. natural gas customers can expect to spend about 12 percent less than last year to heat their homes during the upcoming heating season. . .The Montana Governor’s Cup Marathon was held Sept.

Baker was represented in the 10K race by Kristi Burns, Mardi Brown and Harold Miller. . .Over Labor Day weekend, the Boucher family held a family reunion at Fort Peck to celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of Everett Boucher and Evelyne Boucher. There were 75 in attendance. . .Fallon County 4-H program held its annual Fall Livestock Judging Sept. 27.

An admirable and appreciated piece of public spiritedness was exemplified recently by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Otter of Deer Lodge, formerly of Baker, when they notified the Baker Public Library board they had deeded the four city lots Nos. 13,14,15 and 16 in Block 3 of Park Addition to Baker to be used as a public library site. . . A Junior Woman’s Club was organized Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Claude Erther. Marjorie Siebert was named president; June Flint, vice president; Genevieve Marking, second vice president; Carolyn Goodspeed, secretary; and Marriett Tullock, treasurer. . .The crew of nine U.S. engineers arrived in Baker Wednesday with considerable equipment to survey, check over and seismograph the Little Beaver flood basis for flood control.

Red Butte Ramblers 4-H Club met to make plans for National 4-H Week. The meeting was called to order by president Sayge Barkley. Pledges were said and roll call was answered with your favorite class. Under old business the fair was discussed as well as the fall livestock judging held last week.

4-H clubs are decorating hay bales for National 4-H Week in October. Our club’s bale will be in Plevna and a committee was formed to make a final plan. Achievement Night will be held Oct. 13. The club will sell Greytak calendars again this year.

Our next meeting will be held on Oct. 20 and the hosts are O’Connors. We will clean highway and elect officers for the new year.

Anyone interested in 4-H can contact the Extension Office at 406-778-7110. This is the start of the new 4-H year and a great time to join!

Clarice Curry, 90

Funeral Service for Clarice Curry, 90, of Ekalaka, MT, was held on Sept. 28, 2019 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Ekalaka, MT. Burial followed in Beaver Lodge Cemetery.

Clarice Mary Overn was born Aug. 30, 1929 on the family ranch near Capitol, MT, the daughter of Clara and Ted Overn. She was the youngest of seven children, with three older sisters: Inez, Carrie and Lollie, and three older brothers: Jim, Maurice and Chet. She grew up on the Overn ranch, helping with the chores as well as fishing, picnicking, feeding bum lambs and riding Queenie, their big white mare. Queenie was a tall horse, and Clarice rarely used a saddle, so she had to lead Queenie next to a fence corner and use it to get up on her back. Once, when her mom was worried because she was late visiting with her cousins, the Waterlands, who lived some distance away, her dad walked in the dark all the way there, checked that Queenie was in the barn, then walked back home, with Clarice none the wiser at the time that she had been a concern.

Clarice attended the Little Missouri Lutheran Church at Capitol and went to the Capital School. She started high school in Ekalaka but did not finish due to distance and another distraction: when she was 16, Clarice was at a dance where her cousin, Lute Waterland, introduced her to a handsome returned soldier from the Bell Tower community named Jimmy Curry. They were married in Baker on Sept. 14, 1946 and spent the next fifteen or so years ranching along the Box Elder. Their first child, Darrel, was born a year after their marriage, and was soon followed by Bob, Tom, Toby, Cindy, Rich and Chris, completing their family of nine. It bothered Clarice that she didn’t graduate from high school, so she made sure she eventually got her GED. When the family moved to Ekalaka in the early 1960s, Clarice worked at various

OBITUARIES jobs to help support the family, including as a receptionist for Dr. Musser. The family moved to Baker around 1967.

She worked as a nurse’s aide in the hospital and nursing home, and eventually went to work in the clinic office. She stayed with the clinic until her retirement in 1999, at the age of 70.

In her younger years, she played the piano and the accordion. Clarice loved cooking, baking, gardening and needlework, especially crocheting. She had large gardens on the ranch, in Ekalaka, and then in Baker.

For many years, her garden filled the backyard of their house on Second Street.

Her grandchildren played on the wooden garden paths that their grandpa made for her and sometimes helped themselves to the peas. She crocheted many gifts for her children and grandchildren, but her loved ones young and old most appreciated her talent for baking. Clarice loved to enter the fruits of her labors in the Baker Fair, whether it be flowers from her garden, needlework, or her extensive and wide-ranging culinary entries, including various breads, jellies, jerky and lefse, to name a few. After the fair she would bring home an armload of ribbons, with multiple purple Best in Show ribbons over the years and prizes for the Best Culinary Display. When Bob worked for the fair board and they were assembling the fair books for the coming year, they just handed one to Bob and told him to give it to his mother.

But above all else, Clarice was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and Jim loved attending their

children’s, and later their grandchildren’s, activities, from drill team to wrestling, football and basketball. Her home was the center of the family, where they would gather for Christmas, Easter, family reunions and summer get-togethers, filling the house with love, laughter and pinochle. Her out-of-town grandchildren often came to stay with their Grandpa and Grandma Curry, and she always had Sunday dinner for Bob’s family that lived in town, and any out-of-towners who were visiting. And if you didn’t like onions, she would make a separate dish for you without!

After Jim passed away in 2009, she continued to live in the family home with her cats for company until 2013, when she (and a cat, of course) moved into the Superior Care Assisted Living facility in Baker. She lived there until 2018, when, due to health issues, she moved into the Fallon Medical Complex Long Term Care facility. Her health continued to decline, and she passed away on Sept.

24, 2019.

Clarice is preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents Theo and Clara Overn, her brothers Jim and Chet, and her sisters and brothersin-law, Inez and Otto Johnson, Lollie and Melvin Odell, and Carrie and Quentin Major.

She is survived by her brother, Maurice Overn of Belle Fourche, her children, Darrel (Kathy) of Boise, ID, Bob of Plevna, MT, Tom of Billings, MT, Toby (Joanne) of Sioux Falls, SD, Cindy (Harry) Averett of Gillette, WY, Rich (Diane) of Missoula, MT, and Chris Klein of Dickinson, ND. She is also survived by 21 grand-

children, 28 and counting great-grandchildren, and numerous much-loved nephews, nieces, and dear friends.

She was a great lady and a fighter to the end.

Gladys Viola Wicker, age 90, of Casper, passed away Sept. 3, 2019. Gladys was born July 12, 1929 in Baker, MT to Hans and Albina OngeborgUlven) Tronstad.

She met and married Donald Johnson, and to this union they welcomed three children, Carlotta, Lonnie and Jessie and later they divorced. Thereafter, she met and married Dwight Wicker, the love of her life, and they spent their lives together in the same home they bought when they got married, until his passing in January of 2019. She was a homemaker for the majority of her life, caring for her husband and children. Gladys and Dwight enjoyed rock hunting, fishing, and going out dancing.

Family and friends enjoyed many holiday get-togethers and home cooked meals such as their specialty foods - canned fruit and vegetables, jams, lefse, milk gravy and the more decadent foods like prime rib, king crab and divinity. She enjoyed time gardening. Throughout her life, she always had a dog, “additional family members, not just a pet”. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother - and was greatly loved by all. She had no favorite children or grandchildren but each were made to feel as if they were the most special, because of the love and attention she gave each one of them.

In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Dwight Wicker, children, Carlotta Spaniol and Lonnie Johnson, three sisters, and three brothers.

She is survived by her son, Jesse Johnson, brother, F1oyd Tronstad, numerous grandchildren, great-children, nieces and nephews.

Silver Alert helps find missing woman

The saga of Clara Mae Braun started Sept. 16 when her relatives could not find her or her 2012 Chrysler 300 in South Dakota.

Days later she was found in a rural section of Hettinger County by local residents who helped get her taken to the West River Hospital in Hettinger by EMS responders.

In between, Facebook and North Dakota’s Silver Alert program played a major role in finding Braun stuck and out of gas off a section road in southeast Hettinger County, close to the Adams County line.

It was a happy ending for Jackie Christman, Braun’s granddaughter, and the rest of her family. It was a ending which also played out on Facebook.

Tuesday evening, the Hettinger resident reported on Facebook that a trucker had claimed to have seen Braun’s vehicle south of the city of Lemmon on Highway 73 near Shadehill.

Christman added a post Wednesday morning that her grandmother had been seen near Mott. “Grandma stopped and asked for direction at a farmstead Monday mid morning southeast of Mott, ND. That is the last time anyone has seen her that we know of,” Christman posted on Facebook.

That report helped to focus the search on the area near the Hettinger County seat.

Later Wednesday, Christman added that “Grandma is still missing, planes and ground crew search the Mott area since they knew she had stopped there. All other tips haven’t been Grandma, but we appreciate people reporting! Thank you to everyone for the thinking of Grandma and saying a prayer, she believes in the power of prayer.

We appreciate all the support.”

That patience would pay off the next morning when some Hettinger County residents decided to do their own search nearby.

An early post Thursday morning still was hopeful.

husband are going back there today, it was searched well by planes and ground crew yesterday but doesn’t hurt to look again,” she posted at 9:08 a.m. Thursday.

Minutes later (9:30 a.m.), she got the news for which she had been waiting and hoping. “GRANDMA has Been FOUND. She is alive.

All I know is she was found in Mott Area and an ambulance is on the way to get her. Thank you again for all prayers, support and help!!”

About 90 minutes later, Christman posted “Grandma was found by Brent (Roth), Carrie Roth and Bennie Kruger this morning. She was weak and dehydrated but knew her name and address, she also told them the roads were terrible and to have Jason blade them?, she is in the Hettinger hospital. My dad has been there and she knows him and the other visitors.

Her car was stuck and out of gas on a section line a few miles south of the last place she was seen. The outcome is amazing and we appreciate everyone!!”

Carrie Roth was one of the thousands of people following Christman’s Facebook posts.

According to Christman, early Thursday morning he texted a map to Carrie Roth showing where Braun had last been reported to be seen.

Carrie Roth showed the map to her husband Brent.

He said he knew the area and the poor conditions of the roads. He joined with friend Bennie Kruger to check the area out.

They found her vehicle two miles down a road after seeing car tracks on a section line. She was lying on the ground next to her vehicle.

The searchers called 9-1-1.

A big factor in the search was when the North Dakota Silver Alert was activated.

The North Dakota system was set up in 2017 to help locate missing people who were elderly of had health problems.

Christman has also said that the Silver Alert was probably crucial to finding her grandmother. It also has impressed the Harding County Sheriff who has publicly stated that it was more effective than south Dakota’s Endandered Persons Advisory.

South Dakota does not have a Silver Alert system.

Getting message out In addition to a Silver Alert, Hettinger County’s Emergency Manager, Tracy Kruger, sent an alert for Hettinger County residents on landline telephones.

“This layer of alerting has

been an option for some time, and we are fortunate to not have to use it very often. This message showed up on caller id as (701) 000-0000. Some landlines are setup on answering machines or voicemail, so some citizens got the message. Some telephone lines ignored the phone call/ message and some citizens answered their telephones and received the message,” Kruger explained in a Facebook post.

There may be changes, she added. “Soon, I will be launching a voluntary citizen sign-up campaign which will be another way to receive local emergency notifications, if you so choose.”

Air search The search wasn’t just online via Facebook or using the Silver Alert. The South Dakota Civil Air Patrol conducted an aerial search of Hettinger and Adams counties in North Dakota.

The Harding County Sheriff, Wyatt Sabo, thanks the local agencies for helping out in the search for Braun just the night before she was located.

“I would like to thank the Perkins County Sheriff’s Office, Hettinger County, Adams County, Slope County Sheriffs offices, the ND State Highway Patrol and all others on the ground in Perkins County. I don’t know all (the) agency’s. The civil air patrol brought two planes up to fly a large area today along with several other planes. The last confirmed place Clara was seen was about eight miles south of Mott ND on Monday around 10 a.m. but that does not mean she can’t be anywhere so please keep an eye out for her. Thanks again for all the help today. Have a good night,” he posted.

She was found just over 12 hours later.

Sabo had started the initial search Sept. 16 when he issued a Endangered Missing Advisory in South Dakota.

‘Its a miracle’ As far as Kruger is considered, finding Braun after three full days missing still alive and in relatively good health was miraculous.

“I don’t know why, but it goes back to what prompted the farmers to go out to an area they had already been to. That is unexplained. He (Roth) saying he just had a feeling... That is a miracle. It truly is a miracle. It ended very well in that she was found and alright....in a remote area and stuck in a slough,” the emergency manager added.

Time to plan The county emergency also suggested that family should take some time to make plans on how to survive extreme situations.

“There are lots of common sense things that we can think about that people should probably do. They can’t plan for everything....but...,” she added.

Secretary of State Corey Stapleton is pleased to announce that his office is modernizing the software used for filing liens.

New software has now been implemented to assist the customers who file Uniform Commercial Code liens, Effective Financing Statements, Title 71’s, and all other liens and searches that stakeholders utilize.

“Constant improvement is our goal, and this new software has been in the making for over a year,” Stapleton said. “We have taken thousands of calls from the business community, using each interaction as an opportunity to learn and improve. We’ve listened to the feedback and have launched our new software which will be more intuitive, easier to use, and will include menus to guide our users to filing error-free liens.”

Stapleton also announced that notary and business registry services will also be implemented into this software in the near future.

Spartans cage the Panthers

On Sept. 28, the Baker Spartans hosted the Roundup Panthers for the Spartan’s fourth football game of the season. Kickoff was at 7 p.m. The Spartans received the ball and started marching down the field but were stopped and forced to punt.

Baker then held Roundup and forced them to turn the ball over very quickly. The game went back and forth throughout the first half but neither team could manage to score.

After halftime Baker came out strong and were playing hard but the Panthers still managed to get into the end zone once for a touchdown. The Spartans came out with a vengeance after the score by Roundup and started marching right down the field. In the fourth quarter Riley O’Donnell scored for the Spartans on an 8 yard run. Riley also ran into the end zone for a 2 point con-

version to put the Spartans up 8-6. Baker kept playing hard and Garrett Lesh intercepted the ball, setting the stage perfectly for another Spartan touchdown, a 4 yard run also

by Riley O’Donnell. After beating Roundup, their first conference win, the Baker Spartans remain undefeated at home.

Individual stats are: Riley O’Donnell had 14 points with 2 touchdowns and a 2 point conversion. Riley O’Donnell and Garrett Lesh each had an interception. Riley O’Donnell lead the team in rushing with 15 carries for 91 yards. Dillon Hickey had 27 carries for 70 yards. Avery Uecker had 13 carries for 42 yards. Riley O’Donnell passed 7 times for 58 yards.

Garrett Lesh had 2 receptions for 47 yards. Teight Madler was the leading tackler with 6, O’Connell Qualley had 5, and Dillon Hickey and Garrett Lesh each had 4 tackles.

Lady Spartan volleyball competes in the Dickinson Invitational

The Lady Spartans traveled to Dickinson to compete in the vigorous Dickinson Invite. The Lady Spartans began the weekend with pool play Friday afternoon, playing Killdeer, Dickinson and Glasgow. The Lady Spartans won against Killdeer 3-0, lost to Dickinson 1-2 and lost to Glasgow. The result of Friday’s pool play positioned the Spartans in the silver bracket. The opening match was against Hettinger, who defeated the Lady Spartans (19-25) (13-25). The Spartans then took on Hazen in a highly competitive match, losing (23-25) (25-27). To finish out the tournament the Spartans defeated Beach (25-22) (25-18).

On Saturday, Shelby Moore led defensively with 19 digs.

Sady Harbaugh led in serving with 4 aces. Macee Hadley led in setting with 37 assists. Katie Wang led in hitting and blocking with 11 kills and 3 blocks.

Not so new students Spartan JV gives the at Baker High School Eagles a run for their money

David Moore is a returning junior at Baker High School, having attended school in Baker for first through sixth grade. During his years away from Baker, David has stayed in many different places including Ekalaka, Wibaux, Shepherd, Marmarth, Broadus and towns in Idaho. This year, however, his father, Stevan Rodrigues, was able to bring his family back to Baker because of his job with the pipeline.

David’s mother, Dawn Rodrigues, works at Cabin Creek Cafe, and his younger brother, James Thornock, will also be attending school in Baker this year. David’s favorite classes this year are Ag Mechanics and Art, and he is currently a member of the high school football team and plans to play basketball this winter. In his free time, David enjoys hunting, fishing, playing football, hanging out with friends, and spending time with his two dogs and cats. When asked what his favorite part about being back at BHS was, David simply replied, “The people, the team, and the friends.” David is glad to be back, mentioning that based on his experiences with Baker Schools, “there’s nothing not to like.” Likewise, BHS is excited to welcome back such a positive familiar face this year!

Kaden Wood is yet another familiar face back at BHS this year after spending his sophomore year at Plevna’s school. His mother, Marc-Annette Steen, is a massage therapist and his father, Robert Wood, works for G&G. On Sept. 28, the Spartan JV football team traveled to Sidney, MT to play the Eagles at 11 a.m. under cold and windy conditions. The game began with the Eagles kicking off the ball to the Spartans to receive; the Spartans had a decent return and the battle commenced. The teams battled back and forth the entire first half, with neither team successfully scoring. Although the Eagles got into the Red Zone a few times, the Spartan’s defense was able to withstand the Eagles offense for the first half.

The Spartans came out after halftime and kicked the ball off to the Eagles; the Eagles returned the ball to about the 30 yard line. The battling resumed until finally the Eagles ran a sweep and got outside of the Spartan’s defense and scored. The Eagles tried to run it in for the PAT, but the Spartan’s defense stood the Eagles up and kept them out of the end zone. At the end of the third quarter, the score was the Eagles 6 and the Spartans 0.

Despite relentless attempts and tough playing, the Spartans were unable to score, although they did keep the Eagles from scoring again. The game ended 6-0 in favor of the Eagles. Jaxson Tronstad said, “We played great as a team especially for only having twelve kids and we never gave up.”

2019 Annual Penny War

This year’s Penny War pitting the 7th graders, 8th graders, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and the staff against each other begins on Monday, October 7 and will conclude Friday, October 11 as the bell rings to end the school day.

Each group will be given a five gallon bucket that is placed in a different room according to grade. Students bring in pennies to add to their class bucket; of course, many students will drop in coins other than pennies to the opposing classes, as the point of the war is to see who can bring the most pennies for their class during a week’s time. If someone from another class puts silver coins or paper currency in a class jar it is subtracted from the penny amount. The buckets will be taken to the Bank of Baker, where the workers there will tally up all funds. Whichever class has the most pennies, or the least negative balance, will be dubbed the winner and be the recipient of a pizza party hosted by BHS Student Council. The goal this year is to earn $1,500 dollars that will then be donated to the MakeA-Wish Foundation when the Student Council members attend the Student Council State Convention.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation was created on April 29, 1980 in Phoenix, AZ. The mission of this foundation is to give children with terminal illnesses a chance to make the wish of a lifetime. The values of the organization include; Child Focus, Integrity, Impact, Innovation and Community. The foundation hopes to be able to grant the wish of every eligible child. Baker High School has used the Penny Wars as a donation opportunity every year in the goal of helping The Make-A-Wish Foundation sponsor a child’s wish.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC The Fallon County Commission gives notice to the public that: A person who purposely and knowingly removes gravel from a county road can be prosecuted for THEFT, in violation of §45-6-301, MCA. The statute states, in relevant part: A person commits the offense of THEFT when a person purposely and knowingly obtains or exerts unauthorized control of property of the owner and has the purpose of depriving the owner of the property or uses the property in a manner that deprives the owner of the property.

Depending on whether it is a first, second or third offense, a person convicted of theft of property not exceeding $1,500 in value may be fined a possible $500 and imprisoned in the county jail up to 1 year. If the theft is of property that exceeds $1,500 in value and does not exceed $5,000 in value, a person could be fined up to $1,500 or be imprisoned in the state prison for a term up to 5 years, or both. If the theft is of property exceeding $5,000 in value or as part of a common scheme, a person could be fined up to $10,000 or be imprisoned in a state prison for a term not to exceed 10 years, or both.

On Sept. 23 the Plevna FFA Livestock and Range teams headed to Ekalaka to compete in Fall Districts. The members started the morning with breakfast and opening ceremonies.

Afterwards, the Range teams headed to the range site for the competition, which consisted of Plant Identification, Similarity Index, Animal Unit Month tests and Utilization, Plant Anatomy, and Soil Testing.

When the Range competition was finished, the members headed back to the school for a lunch of sloppy joes.

After lunch, the Livestock teams started their competitions with a team test before splitting into groups. While awaiting results, the members played a game of partner tag to pass the time. The FFA members then ended their day with an awards ceremony. Chloe Tudor placed 10th in Livestock and the Livestock Team placed 3rd. Congratulations!

Many investment & retirement savings accounts are TOD to begin with. Badlands Youth Football League The Baker Recreation Department’s 5 & 6 grade tackle football team has wrapped up their season of participating in the Badlands Youth Football League. Baker was seeded fourth in the season and played for third place in the playoff games on Sept. 28. Killdeer defeated Baker for third place, while Hettinger/Scranton defeated Bowman in the Championship game. The season begins each year with a jamboree the third weekend in August, with weekly games until playoffs.

This was the league’s sixth season, and includes Baker, Beach, Belfield/South Heart, Bowman, Hettinger/Scranton, Killdeer and New England. Baker has participated each year with the exception of the 2018 season due to not having a head coach. This year, Jon Griffith volunteered to coach, Cameron Farrell served as head coach from 2015-2017 and Klint Flint led the first team in 2014.

Without the commitment of our head coaches and all the parents that help out throughout the season, we would not be able to represent Baker in this league.

The Recreation Department has also offered a cheerleading program to coincide with the football league since 2016. This program is offered to 3 - 6 graders and allows them to cheer when Baker hosts the Badlands Football League at Schillinger Stadium.

Private Dinardi graduates Private E-2, Tyler M. Dinardi, graduated from United States Army Basic Infantry Training at Hilton Field in Fort Jackson, SC on Sept. 12, 2019. Private Dinardi successfully completed ten weeks of intensive basic training.

While in recruit training, Private Dinardi achieved recognition as a sharp-shooter and was named bay leader.

Immediately following basic training graduation, Private Dinardi reported to Fort Leonard Wood, MO where he is currently completing his Advanced Individual Training (AIT) in Horizontal Construction Engineering. Following his training, he will return to Miles City where he will serve as a U.S. Soldier in the Army National Guard.

Private Dinardi is the son of Rich and Jessica Batterman of Baker and Scott and Denyse Dinardi of Miles City. His grandparents are Barnet and Shelley Dean of Willard and Dave and Janet Dinardi of Miles City.

He is a 2019 graduate of Custer County High School.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE IS HERBY GIVEN, that the Town Council of the Town of Plevna, Fallon County, Montana, will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the Plevna Community Center at 211 N Main Street in Plevna, Fallon County, Montana, for the purpose of consideration of an increase in rates for public water, sewer and garbage charges to its consumers.

The cost of materials, labor, power, and other operating expenses since the existing rates were established in 2015 are to the extent that present operating revenues are not sufficient to meet the requirements to properly operate, maintain and upgrade service to the Town of Plevna water and garbage utility systems. A sewer rate increase is necessary to offset the increased cost of operating the system and to build reserves with future capital improvements and maintenance.

Furthermore, the combined water and sewer service rates are well below the target rate for user fees based upon formulas established by the Montana Department of Commerce. The target rate is major criteria used to determine eligibility for grant or loan funding assistance through various government agencies that provide funds on a competitive basis to assist with costs of major public utility system improvements in Montana. The Town of Plevna combined target rate is currently listed at $93.44 per month per residential user. The Town of Plevna therefore proposes an increase in monthly rates and fees to prepare for necessary upgrades to the water metering system and sewer infrastructure as well as to address increases to maintenance and operation costs of the Town of Plevna garbage dump site.

The proposal is to be implemented over a three (3) year period to the water, sewer and garbage utility rates and the utility deposit as described below.

It is the intent of the Town of Plevna to implement rate increases for users of the Systems effective November 1, 2019; effective November 1, 2020; and effective November 1, 2021, as set forth herein.

WATER SEWER GARBAGE

At the hearing, all persons, associations, corporations or companies affected or interested, including the Montana Consumer Counsel, may be present and heard and may be represented by counsel. The hearing may be continued from time to time by the Town Council of the Town of Plevna and at the conclusion of the hearing, all interested parties will be allowed to make such arguments as they consider proper. Three mules and a man stop in Baker

On July 1, Emile Brager packed up three mules and started his two-year adventure encircling the United States and Canada. His three mules, Jojo, Sally and Jack, carry a tent, a sleeping bag, a few days rations of food, a slicker and few buckets to water them.

“I camp outside” he said. “I ask for hospitality and to put my sleeping bag in the back yard and the mules.”

Brager is an experienced horseman from France. Once, Brager and his wife rode from the deep south of Argentina to Fairbanks, AK, taking them four years. He was looking for a new challenge and decided on a two-year loop riding around the U.S. and Canada.

Brager stopped in Baker Sept. 19, spending the night at the Fallon County fairgrounds. The next morning he left for Marmarth, ND and onto Medora to see bison.
