Leslie Bohle, honored as 2019 Fallon County Friend of 4-H Leslie Bohle was awarded the Fallon County Friend of 4-H award on Oct. 13, 2019 at the 4-H Annual Achievement Night.

Fallon County 4-H is pleased to honor Leslie Bohle as a Friend of 4-H. For ten years Leslie has volunteered her time and photography skills to take the market livestock pictures at the fair. Some years this has involved being present for parts of three different days. Leslie then prints the photos for members to use in their buyer thank-yous, all at

Downtown storekeepers will be rounding up a harvest of sweet treats for trick-or-treaters on Halloween day. The Baker Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture is sponsoring the sixth annual “Downtown Trick-or-Treat” Oct. 31, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Business owners, not in the downtown area or in the shopping center, are encouraged to be involved by participating in a trunk-or-treat.

Each participant is encouraged to decorate the tail end of a pick-up, trunk of a vehicle or any other mobile unit and park in Russell’s parking lot so the children can parade by to pick up your treat. It would be a “spooktacular” good time if all business people would join in the fun by dressing up.

All participating businesses should register with the Chamber to be included on the list.

Everyone in town is encouraged to dress up and join the fun. A list of participating businesses will be available at local stores.

Leslie came to our community as a sign language aide for a student at Plevna and has continued her education to make photography a business as well as being a ranch wife and mother. Not every photographer has the challenge of making an animal and the member look good at one time! Our 4-H program truly appreciates the time that Leslie has taken to help us with this important aspect of our 4-H year.

Long Term Care to hand out candy Fallon Medical Complex Long Term Care will be having the residents out in the dining room to pass candy out for trick or treaters on Thursday, Oct. 31., from 4-5 p.m.

Superior Care Villa will also be handing out candy to trick or treaters on Thursday, Oct. 31., from 3:30-5 p.m.

Chamber members host Moonlight Madness

On Oct. 17 the Baker Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture put on the annual Moonlight Madness event, held in downtown Baker.

Local Chamber retailers kept their doors open late while Chamber members served a dinner at Thee Garage and Steakhouse Showroom. The supper began at 4:30 p.m. and ran until 7 p.m. Chamber members served roughly 160 people a dinner of roast beef, hotdogs, baked beans, coleslaw, and ice cream as they took a break from shopping.

In previous years, the Chamber members serve approximately 200-250 people. This year they weren’t nearly as busy. Several chamber members voiced that they thought this was due to families traveling out of town for the long weekend since students were out of school due to a teacher’s convention.

Eastern Plains Economic Development Corporation receives grant for motorcyclists Eastern Plains Economic Development Corporation is excited to announce the receipt of a $32,0000 grant from the Montana Department of Commerce as part of a new, community-led initiative to encourage long-term tourism and economic development in eastern Montana communities.

Eastern Plains Economic Development Corporation (EPEDC), which serves Fallon, Carter, Wibaux, Prairie and Dawson County assisted Prairie County Economic Development in the grant writing process. EPEDC is committed to providing the support needed for a better economy in eastern Montana.

The grant funding will be utilized for the creation of the MonDak Motorcycle Loop.

The idea behind the project is that the MonDak Motorcycle Loop is a print and online marketing tool that features a map and destination attractions along a route that explores eastern Montana, western North Dakota and northwestern South Dakota. It is specifically marketed toward motorcyclists.

Riders can begin at any point along the MonDak Motorcycle Loop and experience a wide variety of landscapes and attractions.

The key locations featured on the map include Makoshika State Park in Glendive, Wibaux, Baker and Ekalaka, MT, Deadwood, Spearfish and Buffalo, SD and Bowman and Medora, ND. The Fallon County Health Department is receiving allocated shipments of H1N1 (swine) vaccine weekly. . .Scott Anderson of Baker High School was selected as MBEA’s Outstanding Young Business Teacher of the Year for 2009. Scott will now be eligible to compete for Montana ACTE’s Outstanding Young Teacher of the Year in 2010. . .Vic and Carol Scheuffele will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 1 in Great Falls. . .Sandstone Chapter of Pheasants Forever is sponsoring the first annual Youth Pheasant Hunt Nov. 8. . .Joe Halmans is pictured presenting a check for $609.16 to Pam Owens of the Baker Beautification Project. They will use these funds to engrave “Welcome to Baker” on the rock on Main Street. The proceeds are from donations by Reynolds customers participating in the “Green Bag” Program. . .Casey Hande is pictured presenting Carla Brown a check for $1,000 for the Baker Community Cupboard. Second county-wide economic development meeting was held Oct. 18 with approximately 50 people in attendance. After a brief opening by County Commissioner Don Rieger, everyone was divided into seven smaller groups to brainstorm long and short term ideas. . .For approximately a year and a half, Harvey and Renee Reetz of Baker and their son Ryan have been fixing used bicycles and giving them away to youngsters in Fallon County and other surrounding communities. They have fixed approximately 350

bikes and given away nearly 300 of them. . .Irene Bechtold will celebrate her 80th birthday Oct. 24. . .Moonlight Madness and Customer Appreciation Supper were well attended by area residents.

Alice Heiser reported a turnout of approximately 750 people at the free meal served at Thee Garage. . .Football coach Don Schillinger won his 200th football game. . .Ida Wild celebrated her 91st birthday. . .High temperature Oct. 13 was 75 degrees, low temperature was Oct. 16 with 13 degrees. . .“Taste the Beef” cooking school will be held Nov. 6 at the Plevna Fire Hall. It is being sponsored by the Fallon Creek CowBelles, Beef Check-off Dollars and Reynolds Supermarket.

40 YEARS AGO Thursday, Oct. 25, 1979--

Ten Baker seniors will hang their jerseys this Friday following the Baker-Bowman game. The team has only lost two games this year. Pictured are Tom Barth, Randy Ketterling, C. B. Heiser, Tom Breitbach, Dale McCamish, Doug Vanderpan, Shane Farstveet, Mike Domagala, Lester Straub and Ward Anderson. Not pictured are Marty Williams and Jeff Haase. . .Doug Austin, director of the District III Alcohol Program, announces the placement of Margie Dunlap as the new alcohol and drug counselor in Baker. . . A fire broke out at the Lois Zupanik ranch, making the winter feed supply go up in smoke. Before it could be controlled, it burned 100 ton of hay and continued over to the next stacks of round bales. It was finally contained just ten feet from the second pile of hay and the building of the ranch. . . A no-host going away party was held at the Blue Room for Mr. and Mrs. Duane Rindy. They will be leaving the community for their new home in Olympia, WA. . .What was alleged to be a pot party ended in a street and bar room brawl Saturday in Plevna. Last count of injuries had one man with a broken nose, two men with concussions - one treated and released, the other admitted to the hospital.

Mrs. Katherine Weeks, president, conducted the meeting. Sixteen clubs were represented. . .Mrs. Ida Hempler of Hanover, Germany is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Jake Ehret and family. . .First in a series of meetings on good grooming for 4-H club members, leaders and mothers was held in the courthouse. The weather man was decidedly contrary last Saturday but hundreds of people disregarded him and came to Baker to take in Bargain Day and the Farmers Frolic. Attendance at the Frolic came close to 500. . .Fourth annual community Halloween party comes up next Monday night and there will be lots of fun and eats for all children of the community. . .Askin-Becker Associates moved in a big drilling rig today on their holdings in the Plevna anticline. Janet Jean Tuggle, 82

Janet Jean Tuggle, of Mt. Juliet, TN, passed away on Oct. 18, 2019. She had just celebrated her 29th birthday on Sept. 29.

Janet was born in Broadwater, NE and graduated from Chadron State College with a degree in Music. Her love for music and children led her to spend the majority of her life as a music teacher in Montana and Nebraska.

Janet’s spring programs were legendary and the highlight of the year for her K-4 students and parents.

Janet and her husband retired to Custer, SD, where, among other things, Janet developed a true love for horses, after she and Gary lived on and helped manage an Appaloosa Ranch for many years. Janet loved football

and was an avid fan of the Nebraska Corn Huskers and the Green Bay Packers.

Throughout Janet’s life, she made a huge impact on her students and there are a lot of lives out there that will forever be touched by her and we couldn’t be more proud to share those accomplishments. However, we truly hope that Janet Jean Tuggle left this earth knowing that when she was Mom, Gram, and Great-Gram, that is where she truly shined and she was so loved.

Janet was preceded in death by husband, Gary Bryan Tuggle; son, Kevin; sister, Judy Wyland; and mother, Dorothy Berta.

Janet is survived by sons, Gresh (Shellie) Tuggle of Mt. Juliet, TN, and Scott (Gail) Tuggle of San Diego, CA; daughter, Cristy Tuggle of Rapid City, SD; six grandchildren, Kelly (Jay) Steele, Vince Tuggle, Dylan Tuggle, Joseph Tuggle, Kevin Benavente and Bryan Benavente; as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Nora June (Wiser) Pratt, 87, passed away on Oct. 11, 2019 in Baker, MT. She was married to Floyd H. Pratt on April 1, 1948. They spent 65 loving years together until his passing in 2013.

The mountains of Young Harris, GA had been their home for many years. She was the middle child of five born to Elton S. and Esther E. (Childers) Wiser on Aug. 5, 1932 in Sand Springs, OK. Nora is survived by her ten children: Judith Marke, Susan Hess, Peggy Johnson, Debra Pratt, Pamela Burkard, Cheryl Bunce, Carol Griffis, Floyd (Jay) Pratt, Jonathan Pratt and Ginger Pratt-Williams. Even up until recently Nora was heard repeating the names of her children “Judy, Susan, Peggy, Debby, Pam, Cheryl, Carol, Jay, Jon, Ginger” whom she dearly “loved” and was so “proud of.”

Tester demands regulators USDA hosting Farm Bill meetings allow hemp producers to in 23 Montana communities bank locally Senator: “It is absolutely unacceptable to deny legally available services to those who need them” U.S. Senate - Following six months of inaction from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) on updating its hemp-related guidance, U.S. Senator Jon Tester is demanding that they comply with federal law and cease prohibiting local banks from accepting funds related to hemp farming.

“Montana leads the nation in hemp production, planting more than 40,000 acres in 2019,” Tester wrote to FinCEN Director Ken Blanco.

“Yet, as producers pioneer a new crop, they are shut out of the banks that they have worked with for generations. I am hearing from folks across Montana that their banks will not accept funds related to hemp farming, fearing enforcement ac-

tion from their regulators… especially as most farmers are harvesting their very first hemp crop, it is absolutely unacceptable to deny legally available services to those who need them.”

FinCEN is among the last regulators to implement yearold laws allowing farmers to produce hemp, preventing many financial institutions from banking hemp due to fear of enforcement action from the organization. FinCEN is refusing to update its guidance until a USDA federal hemp plan is released.

Hemp was removed from the list of Schedule I controlled substances nearly a year ago, following the passage of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, which now permits producers to grow the crop. In August, the National Credit Union Administration announced that it will provide financial

services to legally operating hemp businesses and farmers. The Fiscal Year 2020 Senate Appropriations package currently making its way through Congress would direct the Farm Credit Service to bank hemp as well.

Tester has been a champion for Montana hemp producers since they started cultivating the plant as part of a 2014 pilot program. Last month, he secured nearly $165,000 to research hemp and establish Canadian markets for the crop, and earlier this spring, he successfully pushed Customs and Border Protection to update their hemp guidance to allow Montana producers to purchase hemp seeds from Canada. Tester was the first member of Montana’s Congressional delegation to ask federal agencies to address this issue in a March 12 letter to USDA Secretary Perdue.

Learn about changes to the Agricultural Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs BOZEMAN - USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in partnership with Montana State University (MSU) today announced the schedule of 23 informational Farm Bill meetings across Montana in October and early November 2019.

USDA and MSU are conducting the meetings to inform Montana agricultural producers about FSA’s Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs authorized by the 2014 and 2018 Farm Bills. Attendees can learn about program changes and ARC or PLC election and enrollment options. The meetings are expected to range from two to three hours in duration.

The Lady Spartans traveled to Forsyth to take on the Lady Dogies. The Spartans started slow, losing the first two sets (14-25) (13-25), but rallied, coming back and winning the third set (25-18).

The Spartans and Dogies then competed in a thrilling fourth set. Battling all the way, the Lady Spartans finally fell to the Dogies losing (29-31). Sady Harbaugh led the Spartans in serving with 5 aces. She also had 2 kills and 7 digs. Shelby Moore led in hitting with 10 kills and also had 2 blocks and 11 digs. Katie Wang led in blocking with 6 blocks and also had 6 kills and 6 digs. Macee Hadley led in setting with 18 assists.

2019 Penny War, helping to make a change

The 2019 Penny War came to an end on Oct. 11 at 2:05 p.m. This competition, which raises money for the Make a Wish Foundation, has long been a favorite activity. The staff and classes 7-12 collected a total of $1,189.33 this year, which will be added to a donation from Student Council and tips collected from concessions. These funds will be presented to the Make a Wish Foundation at the State Student Council Convention in a few weeks.

The 7th graders collected a total of $107.53 and had a negative balance of $71.57 towards the penny war. The 8th graders also had a negative balance of $60.51 and an overall total of $131.59.

The 9th grade had a negative $124.89 balance with a total of $130.41. The tenth grade had a negative balance of $82.04 and a total of $257.26. The 11th grade collected a total of $116.82 with a negative balance of $63.58.

The seniors collected the most money during and after the official time frame of the contest; they had a grand total of $270.89, and had a positive balance of $32.19.

The staff managed to gather a total of $174.83, but had the lowest amount with a negative $160.77. The sophomore class was awarded the prize of having won the actual Penny War itself, with the most pennies collected during the actual time frame of the contest. The seniors collected the most money during and after the time frame of the Penny War; Mrs. Bettenhausen, Student Council adviser, announced that both the sophomore class and the senior class will receive a pizza party in thanks and recognition of their outstanding work to help support the Make a Wish foundation.

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) advisers Cindy Quade and Carole Bettenhausen, along with the members of SADD, have been hard at work planning the 2019 Red Ribbon Week.

Monday, October 28, is “Hats Off To Being Drug Free”!

Students will be permitted to wear their favorite hat to and in school.

Tuesday, October 29 is “Be Super--Be Drug Free”! Students are encouraged to dress up like their favorite super hero.

Wednesday, October 30 is “Wear Red Day”. Students are challenged to wear as much red as they possibly can.

Thursday, October 31 is “Say ‘Boo’ to Drugs”; students should wear their finest Halloween costumes/disguises.

Friday, November 1 is “Say ‘Aloha’ to Drugs”; students are encouraged to dress up in their finest Hawaiian/school appropriate attire!

This October, Alissa Schell had the amazing opportunity to play alongside the state’s finest young musicians in Montana’s All-State Band.

Back in June, she sent in a recorded audition and in late August received the exciting news that she was one of the 15 flute players across the state that was accepted. This was a great honor, as 100 of the 116 All-State band members came from class AA schools. After receiving the challenging music in September, Alissa spent the entire next month learning and practicing it in preparation.

On Oct. 16, she traveled to Billings for chair placement auditions and sectionals that evening. The next morning, the full band rehearsals began. Aside from a few breaks, the group spent nearly every waking hour of the next two days rehearsing and perfecting the music. On Thursday night, however, the groups

had a break from their intensive practice to attend the AllState host night concert. This year, the concert consisted of two men’s a capella groups, “Sound of the Rockies” and “Storm Front”. After yet another day of rigorous rehearsals, the All-State Choir, Orchestra, and Band presented their annual concert that Friday night. The choir, conducted by Dr. Mark Wilberg, performed first, followed by the orchestra, directed by Dr. Michael Griffith. The band concluded the concert, and was conducted by world-renowned director Dr. Peter Loel Boonshaft, Professor of Music at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. The band’s stunning performance was an outstanding end to the concert, receiving a standing ovation from the audience.

Alissa remarked, “It was an amazing experience! I’m so glad I had the opportunity to work with such amazing musicians!”

On Oct. 13, the Plevna FFA members Jenna Paul, Dacy Buerkle, Chloe Tudor, Jaeda Paul, Maddi Butori, Whitney Thielen, Wyatt Thielen, Kalob Bollinger and Tristan Buerkle traveled to Billings for Livestock Judging competitions. They judged Breeding Gilts, Market Hogs, Breeding Does, Red Angus Heifer

Calves, Simmental Angus Heifers, Simmental Angus Bulls, Hereford Heifers, Market Steers, Market Lambs and Wether Dam Ewes.

They had three reason classes: Market Hogs, Simmental Angus Bulls and Market Lambs.

Overall, it was a fun and educational practice for the Livestock Judging Team.

October 18, junior high girls’ basketball teams played their first game of the season in Wibaux. The grades 4-6 team played a hard game, with the final score being Plevna 2 and Wibaux 26. The grades 7-8 girls’ team played

against Wibaux finishing with a score of Plevna 17 and Wibaux scoring 52 points.

They then played their second game in Broadus on Oct. 19. The grades 4-6 team ended the game with a score of Plevna 14 and Broadus 26.

played Wibaux also completing the game with a score of Plevna 10 points as Broadus scored 38. The girls’ basketball team will play their next game at home against Jordan on Oct. 25. Good Luck!

October 18, the junior high Boys’ Basketball teams traveled to Wibaux for the first game of the season!

The grades 4-6 team played a hard game, with the final score being Plevna 36 and Wibaux 13. Congratulations

on your win! The grades 6-8 team also played against Wibaux. The final score for this game was Plevna 10 with Wibaux scoring 51. The boys’ basketball team then played their second game in Broadus on Oct. 19. The grades 4-6 team finished the game with a score of Plevna 12

and Broadus 45. The grades 6-8 played a hard game ending with a score of Plevna 7 with Broadus putting in 58 points. They played well and brought great spirit! The next game will be played at home Friday, Oct. 25, against the Jordan Mustangs.

3rd grade study frog adaptations

Mrs. Fry and her third class have been learning about animal adaptations in nature.

They did an experiment with origami frogs to test their knowledge! One group of the class made their frogs with paper tongues, which they dampened to represent the frogs before adapting.

The other half of the class made their frogs with tape, to represent the adaptation of sticky tongues. Then, they split into pairs with a wet tongue and a sticky tongued frog in each group. The third graders used hole punch confetti as insects for the frogs to catch with their tongues.

After a small competition, they decided the adaptation of sticky tongues led to more food for the frogs. When the experiment was over, they jumped their origami frogs

around for a bit! Overall, they had a wonderful time learning about adaptations of animals in nature.

2018 fatal motor vehicle crashes: overview Free Financial Education Webinar series to begin Oct. 30

There were 36,560 people killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes on U.S. roadways during 2018, a 2.4-percent decrease from 37,473 in 2017, which came after a 0.9-percent decrease from 2016 to 2017. Prior to 2016 there were two back-to-back yearly increases of 8.4 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively.

Fatalities decreased from 2017 to 2018 in almost all segments of the population with the exception of fatalities in crashes involving large trucks and nonoccupant fatalities (pedestrians and pedalcyclists).

There were 913 fewer fatalities in 2018 than 2017 in the following (but not limited to).

The fatality rate per 100 million VMT decreased by 3.4 percent from 1.17 in 2017 to 1.13 in 2018.

Over the past 40 years there has been a general downward trend in traffic fatalities. Safety programs such as those increasing seat belt use and reducing impaired driving have substantially lowered the traffic fatalities. Vehicle improvements such as air bags and electronic stability control have also contributed greatly to the reduction of traffic deaths. The partnerships with States on highway safety issues support a range of activities that have saved lives over the years.

California had the largest decrease, with 78 fewer lives lost in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in 2018. Seventeen States and Puerto Rico saw increases in the number of alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities, with the largest increase of 34 fatalities in Puerto Rico followed by 22 more in Montana.

Scary mummies with devilish “Project WILD” Educator Workshop offered in two locations dipping sauce Newspaper Toolbox - This spooky twist on pigs in a blanket is fun to eat and even easier to make. Kids of all ages will be delighted.

Start to finish: 30 minutes Servings: 20 Mummies: •12-ounce package of crescent roll dough •10 hot dogs Dipping sauce: •1/2 cup mayonnaise •2 tablespoons maple syrup •1 tablespoon Dijon mustard •Salt and pepper to taste •Red food coloring (optional) Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°.

2. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper.

3. Cut the hot dogs in half to make two shorter pieces (or you can keep them whole and make ten bigger mummies).

4. Unroll crescent roll dough and cut it into strips that are about half-an-inch wide.

5. Wrap the strips around each hot dog, leaving a portion unwrapped near the end to make the “face.” Place the dough covered hot dogs on the baking sheet.

6. Bake for 15 minutes or until the dough is golden brown.

7. While the hot dogs are baking, in a bowl combine all the dipping sauce ingredients.

8. Let the mummies cool for 5 to 10 minutes and then serve with the sauce. Enjoy!
