Cardinals runners look to continue success in 2020 By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer Last year was one the best in recent memory for Langdon-EdmoreMunich Cross Country. Both the girls and boys teams finished in the top 10 at the state meet in Minot. The girls took sixth and the boys, eighth. Lost from the team on the girls side was their only senior, AllState runner Elise Ramberg, who took seventh overall last season. On the boys side, All-Stater Blaine Perry has been lost to graduation along with Arik Christianson and Logan Harder. This year Cardinals have 10 seniors out for the boys team, led by two seniors, Caleb Hetler and Tucker Regner. There are two juniors, Mason Mittleider and Alex Brinegar, one sophomore with Mason Christianson, two freshman in Dameon Bernstrom and Edward Freer, plus three eighth graders: Brock Freer, Jaxen Radamacher and Kartheek Chapara. There are five athletes out for the girls team led by senior Lauren Baril and junior Alexa Schneider, who is new to the
program. Also on the squad are twin freshman Kate and Jane Sillers and sophomore Clarice Brinegar. Todd Hetler is once again head coach of the Cardinals, and he is assisted for the first time this season by Kiara Bassingthwaite. When asked about this year’s team, Hetler said, “Our number of athletes that we have out is looking pretty good. We added some real quality individuals to our program. We also have some very good veterans returning to our program as well. Due to the fact that we didn’t have a track season, it is going to take us a while to get into top shape. We’re really going to focus on taking each day and each meet as a stepping stone towards being our best for the East Region Meet and the state meet. We’re just so thankful to be back together as a team.” Both Cardinal teams will start their season with an opening meet at Hillsboro on August 22. The Cards will host a tournament at the Langdon Country Club on September 21. The State B Meet is scheduled for Jamestown on October 24.

Cardinals football looks to push for a rare “3-Peat” on the Class A gridiron By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer
2-Time State Champs ride a 25 game winning streak into season
In a 2018 season when LangdonEdmore-Munich surprised the North Dakota football world by winning their first-ever football championship, the 2019 year was much more businessman like. The Cardinals took care of business in every game they played. Impressively, they won their second straight title by beating every opponent they played by 28 points or more. The 2020 Cards are poised to try and win their third straight title this season. The last loss for the Cardinals was in the 2017 State Championship game, and their winning streak has now gone to 25 games to begin this year. The Cardinals were hit hard by graduation, losing three All-State players in Jackson Delvo, Jesse Fetsch and Sean Gette. Other seniors no longer around are Sid Ullyott, Peyton Ullyott, Noah Anderson, Brett Myers, Hunter Feil and Wyatt Kartes. But the reason for optimism for the 2020 Cards is that they have a ton of talent back led by two-time All-Staters, seniors Simon and Grant
Romfo. There are 28 players total out for the team in grades 9-12. Other seniors include Cooper Zimmer, Alex Cluchie, Drew Simpson, Roger Economy, and Skyler Fincher, who is new to the program after moving to Edmore from Larimore. There are just three juniors out for the team in Tucker Welsh, Jacob Pollestad and Shaun Goeser. The sophomore class is led by two boys who have seen lots of varsity action the last two years, Jack Romfo and Carter Tetrault. Other sophomores are Markus Kingzett, Brody Steinmetz, Gage Goodman, Ethan Okeson and Alex Gellner. The biggest class on the team, by far, is the freshmen: Mason Romfo, Nic Kingzett, Parker Rime, Brayden Schwartz, Chase Moen, Jace Rime, Cole Welsh, Kaden Hoffman, Kadyn Hein, Rayce Worley and Dawson Hein are all ready for their first taste of high school football. Three-time Class A Coach of the Year Josh Krivarchka is once again heading up the Cardinals program, assisted this year by Tim Polansky, Sam Preble and Marty Tetrault. We asked Coach Krivarchka to give his thoughts on the upcoming season, and he said, “We are really excited for the opportunity to play this upcoming season. We have some really talented players returning this year, and we are excited to see some of our younger guys step up this season. It should be a fun year for Cardinal football.”
Langdon-Edmore-Munich is once again in Region 2A this year, which includes the same eight teams as last year - Grafton, Park River Area, Bottineau, Harvey-Wells County, Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn, Carrington and Rugby. The Cards open their season with two non-conference games, one at Northern Cass on August 21 then at home versus Hatton-Northwood on August 28. They open up their conference schedule at Park River on September 4.

State Champion Lady Cards ready to defend title with veteran leadership and new faces Rich Olson enters his 25th year as head coach of Cardinals Volleyball By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer
What a year it was last season for Langdon-Edmore-Munich volleyball. The Lady Cards won their fifth straight Region 4 Tournament title and won their fourth State B Championship at the Fargodome in November, winning 3-1 over Oakes. Callie Ronningen won Region 4 Senior Athlete of the Year, made the AllState team for the third year in a row, and was named to the All-State Tournament team along with now senior Lexi Olson and junior Morgan Freije. Ronningen has taken her talents to play college volleyball in Jamestown. All-Region 4 setter Calyn Crockett will play volleyball in Wahpeton, and All-Region libero Kaitlynn Scherr is set to play college basketball at Dakota College in Bottineau. Other seniors lost to graduation are Brooke Bakke and McKenna Belle. But the cupboard is far from bare for this year’s Cardinal team. They have 21 girls out for the high school team and 22 for junior high. Leading the team will be All-Region players Olson and Freije, along with seniors Kaylee Lowery and Raelyn Klindt. Juniors on the squad are Abby Forest, Marlee Hetletved and Morgan Thielbar. Sophomores on the 2020 version of the Lady Cards are Taryn Amble, Olivia
Christianson, Halle Jabs and Sarah Nelson. The biggest class is a talented group of freshman in Cora Badding, Arianna Haraseth, Payton Harpestad, Jaya Henderson, Jada Moen, Isabelle Olson, Taryn Romfo, McKenna Schneider and Jalynn Swanson. There is also one eighth grader who made the high school team in Meredith Romfo. When asked about the upcoming season, Rich Olson, who is in his silver 25th season coaching the Cardinals, said, “We are all looking forward to competing against teams around the state with 20 regular season matches now scheduled this season. Having no regular season tournaments is disappointing for our players, but they are excited for the new competition that the revised schedule presents. I love that we have strong leadership and a great work ethic to go along with our talent. I believe this gives us the potential to be one of the top teams in the state. Our girls have worked hard and want to prove how good they can be! We all look forward to the challenge of a tough regular season schedule along with the opportunity to defend our post season championships!” Olson is assisted this year, again, by Tami Flink and Alison Podhradsky, while the junior high will be coached by Jane Hart and Morgan Titus.
