Fall is Time to Get Cattle Ready for Winter

Checking cows’ body condition scores, evaluating bulls and vaccinating against diseases are good management steps in the fall.

One step is good management, according to livestock experts at North Dakota State University.

Bulls need evaluation in the fall as well, Dahlen says. Producers should assess the animals’ feet legs and BCS, and check the bulls for penile injuries. Mature bulls should have minimal weight

loss during the breeding season, while yearling bulls will lose some weight during that time and would benefit from improved nutrition when removed from the breeding herd.

Selecting the right vaccine is another part of good fall livestock management.

“This aspect of ‘crop insurance’ must be done in consultation with your veterinarian because it involves an assessment of the risk of certain dis-

eases, and the efficacy and safety of specific vaccines,” says Gerald Stokka, NDSU Extension veterinarian and livestock stewardship specialist.

“The preweaning vaccination protocol provides an ideal opportunity to follow up on springtime vaccinations and enhance the immune response to respiratory pathogens.”

Respiratory disease is one of the primary risks to weaned calves, Stokka notes. Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is associated with the stress of weaning, a change of diet, transportation or movement to

new surroundings, and often the commingling of different pasture groups on the same ranch. Enhancing the calves’ immunity to specific potential pathogens decreases the risk of BRDC. Depending on the veterinarian’s assessment of the disease risk in a herd, calves may receive booster doses at weaning or simply may be separated from their dams without additional vaccinations.

Modified live virus vaccines, often called fiveway viral vaccines, can provide excellent protection when handled properly and administered according to label instructions, Stokka says.

Other bacterial vaccines may be used, depending on herd history and risk.

“What is important to remember is that killed/ inactivated vaccines usually will require a booster dose to achieve an ade-

quate level of protection,” Stokka says. “Consult your veterinarian about specific products related to viral and bacterial vaccines.”

Other diseases that can affect cattle in the fall include: Clostridial diseases, commonly called “blackleg” - The risk of this infection is difficult to assess; however, this organism lives in the soil and can cause severe illness and death in susceptible animals. A second dose of vaccine administered at this time will enhance protection against this family of pathogens.

Internal parasites Cattle on grass will have internal parasites. These parasites can reduce calves’ feed/forage intake, resulting in reduced weaning weights, and have a negative impact on the calves’ ability to respond to vaccination.

If dewormer products are used at preweaning, calves should be moved to clean pastures to avoid

re-infection.

Rotational grazing can increase parasite loads, especially if the cattle are left too long on rotation units or if some units are used several times during the grazing season. Conversely, rotational grazing can decrease the internal parasite load when cattle are moved appropriately (one month or less) to clean grazing units. Producers should consult with their veterinarian about which products to use.

External parasites - They will be very evident at this time of year.

Horn and face flies can be bothersome to adults and calves. Topical treatment at preweaning for cows, bulls and calves is advisable, depending on the fly population. However, Stokka doesn’t recommend treating for biting and sucking lice now.

Lice’s feeding activity will increase with colder weather, so hold off on systemic treatments until signs of lice appear.

Learn how farming used to be at annual Threshing Bee

By Bryce Martin / Pioneer Members of Yesterday’s Farmers of Bowman County were eagerly preparing for their 33rd Annual Threshing Bee. Shawn Allerdings, a Yesterday’s Farmers member, used the opportunity to give his children a history lesson on how farming used to be done decades ago. That, he said, is the mission of Yesterday’s Farmers.

His children, Elsie, 4, and Eamon, 3, had a great time this week riding along on the old tractors formerly used in the crop fields as hay was bound prior to the event.

The Threshing Bee is one of the group’s annual events that showcases how it once was in the agriculture industry; Allerdings said the farming techniques and equipment of days past have become somewhat forgotten.

The Threshing Bee has been a staple of the agriculture community in Bowman County since it began in 1981, and traditionally attracts a large crowd from the tri-state area, he said.

Antique engines, tractors and appropriate antique farming equipment were on display during the Bee at the Yesterday’s Farmers grounds on the west side of Bowman.

Nick Werth of Rhame had his model steam engine on display during the weekend and up for operation.

Each year Yesterday’s Farmers hosts a raffle contest, offering a grand prize of either a tractor or $1,000. Tickets are widely sold throughout the community.

The event culminates in a large parade of tractors and other farming equipment down Main Street.

“I love it,” Allerdings said of being a member.

LaCross named Bullfighter of the Year

By Sherry Phebus Vogel / Fallon County Times Montana cowboy Sylvan LaCross was awarded the coveted Bullfighter of the Year award by the Northern Rodeo Association (NRA) on October 11 in Butte, Montana.

For nearly a decade this 27-year-old polite, soft-spoken cowboy has been competing in rodeo on both the NRA and PRCA circuits. He began bareback riding while attending Red Lodge High School, graduating in 2006, but his love for the sport began long before then.

As a young boy growing up in Baker at just four years of age, family friend cowboy Gary Singer would let him come behind the chutes at the Fallon County Fair Rodeo. “He got me hooked,” quipped LaCross. While growing up he admired Plevna, MT legend Lloyd Ketchum, former world champion bullfighter. No novice at bareback, LaCross enjoyed watching the bull riding event. He became intrigued with studying the situation “just before the wreck happens.” He began to evaluate the position of the enraged bull in regard to the bucked off cowboy.

It led him to the revelation that he would like to try his hand at bullfighting.

(Photo By Jackie Jensen Photography.com) Whatever LaCross is doing must be working because although he has had no formal training his mere desire, his time spent watching and evaluating, and “just learning from hard knocks” has paid out. Cha-Ching! It has paid out not only in honor but also in his billfold. The occupation of bullfighter earns a “guaranteed paycheck.” In this past year, from April to October, LaCross has fought in 30 rodeos. He has “double dipped” in 15 of them. This means he has competed in the bareback event as well as bullfighting in the same

rodeo.

This year he will make a total transition focusing entirely on his bullfighting. He admitted, “It’s hard to fight ‘the itch’ to get on a bucking horse.”

As of late, LaCross has become acquainted with

accomplished bullfighter Al Sandvold, of Bozeman, Montana. Sandvold is helping to fine-tune the younger cowboy’s skills.

LaCross shared the most important lesson learned concerned his timing in the arena. “After clear-

ing a situation out, I’ve learned to move a lot slower,” he said. “This gives the bull time to recognize me as a bigger threat than the downed bull rider.” If he moves too fast the bull perceives him as a passing intruder and still remains focused on the cowboy. At times, this gutsy fighter has actually laid his hand on the bull to get his attention.

Consequently, LaCross has accumulated quite a rap sheet this season.

The list includes being launched in the air, ran over, and stepped on.

This passionate bullfighter takes his job very seriously. His ultimate goal is to ensure that no cowboy is maimed or killed, but being a circuit rider himself he also wants to ensure that each rider remains uninjured “so that he will be able to get down the road, riding the circuit to his bigger goal of making National Finals in Las Vegas in December.”

When asked what his

goals are he listed his short-term goals first. He wants to participate in the Binion Bucking Bull Sale in Las Vegas right before National Finals. He is also looking forward to having his own booth in the trade show. LaCross said, “This will help get my name out there. He will be handing out his cards and showing a promotional DVD of himself fighting in the arena. In January, LaCross will continue to make circuit finals in Great Falls, Montana.

In our conversation I had asked LaCross to share with me five attributes of the bullfighter.

The five words he used to paint a bullfighter’s portrait were: tough, skilled, athletic, personable, and selfless. Glancing up from my notes, I realized his face reflected that very description.

LaCross, a fifth-generation native of Baker, Montana, is the son of Lon and Monica LaCross of Baker, Montana and the late Patricia LaCross.

Brooks elected for second-term as Stockmen’s Association president North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) members tapped Steve Brooks of Bowman for his second term as president of the 86-year-old organization during the NDSA’s Annual Convention & Trade Show, “Here for the Long Haul,” in Bismarck Sept.

24-26.

In his remarks during the convention’s opening session, Brooks highlighted several policy issues facing the North Dakota beef industry.

He said the NDSA would continue in the next year to work for its members’ interests on issues ranging from dietary guidelines to revamping the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

“This organization was founded to help pre-

vent cattle rustling and protect private property rights,” Brooks said.

“That is still what we’re after, to keep our members in business and to protect our membership from the issues that face the industry today.”

Brooks pointed to the NDSA’s work on the ESA. the Waters of the United States rule and defeating Measure 5 last fall as several examples of the association’s work to curb federal overregulation.

He remained optimistic through the recent downturn in the cattle market.

“There is still room for

more cattle in places like Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas,” Brooks said. “I

think it’s going to surprise you by the end of November to see what

these cattle will bring.

We just have to hang in there.”

sLow crop prices causing headaches for farmers t

By Bryce Martin / Pioneer An image that has been circulating on social media pages gives an all-too-true depiction of the blight of the modern farmer.

Written above a photo of a truckload of wheat reads, “FYI: This truckload of wheat will make 42,000 loaves of bread worth $84,000.” Under that, a disturbing truth, “The farmer gets $5,200 for it.”

That’s in part due to the low price of wheat as a commodity. The cause of that, also in part, is supply and demand.

Those not in tune with the agriculture industry might not realize crop prices are set in an arena similar to the nation’s stock market. Instead of stocks and bonds, however, they’re trading commodities; in this case it’s crops. A commodity is a raw material or primary agricultural product that can be bought and sold. These commodities are traded constantly on commodity exchanges around the world such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Winnipeg Commodities Exchange (WCE) and the New York Mercantile Exchange

(NYMEX).

The Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), the nation’s oldest futures and options exchange, saw most-active wheat contract rise nearly 2 percent on Tuesday, to $4.76 a bushel. According to various reports, that’s due to a lower US Dollar Index— meaning a weakening in the worth of the US dollar measured against various other currencies.

Nationally, wheat has experienced a dive in

prices since crop commodities reached highs in 2012 and 2013.

Because they’re traded on exchanges, crop prices aren’t set by a single person or entity. On the exchanges, commodities are traded via futures contracts, which force the holder to buy or sell a commodity at a predetermined price on a future delivery date.

“We are seeing a bit of support for wheat around five-year low levels as there is some end-user

demand,” Paul Deane, senior agricultural economist at ANZ Bank of New Zealand, told Reuters this week.

If the USDA’s report at the end of this week confirms high corn yields, there could be further fund liquidations and if corn is sold off, wheat will face pressure, according to Deane.

A commodities futures price is determined primarily by the supply and demand for the commodity in the market.

But there are also many economic factors that will have an effect on the price of a commodity.

plete; North Dakota—the top wheat producer in the nation—has about 7 percent left and Montana has about 8 percent left to go.

“Yes, it is possible to see high grain prices again, but it likely will not happen this year,” Frayne Olson, crops economist with the NDSU Agribusiness and Applied Economics Department, wrote in a recent column.

“That doesn’t mean that current crop prices can’t improve, but they won’t reach the lofty levels we saw in 2012-13 for some time.”

According to Olson, the price volatility and price levels seen in crop futures since 2007 are the result of three key interconnected conditions: the expansion of corn ethanol, the growth in Chinese soybean imports and historically tight U.S. grain ending stocks.

As long as crop production continues to grow at about the same pace as consumption, crop inventories are large enough to buffer short-term supply chain disruptions, Olson wrote.

Olson’s view is that the next several years will be a blend of the conditions experienced in the 1980s, meaning further hardships and uncertainty, and those seen in the past several years.

The “typical” market will result in relatively low, stable crop prices and tight farm-level profit margins, according to Olson. But farmers will have periods of rapid price rallies and better profit opportunities.

Unfortunately, as Olson noted, the timing of these price rallies are impossible to predict and likely will not last for a long time.

Fierce, Not Fragile

Female former PRCA pickup ‘man’ talks poetry, injuries and how it is to work in a man’s world

By Bryce Martin / Pioneer The term “cowboy” doesn’t suit Ann Secrest Hanson.

She knows what it’s like to be a woman in the male-dominated world of rodeo. Her experiences decades ago as the only female pickup “man” and her subsequent induction into a national hall of fame has earned her the description of being fierce, not fragile—she’s a true “cowgirl.”

Hanson of Bowman now lives a more quiet life raising quarter horses with her husband on their property near Amidon, but she vividly recalled her heyday working and riding in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association rodeos.

As glimpses of her past life in the rodeo resurface with the annual PRCA Rodeo in town, she’ll be heading in a different direction—reading her true-tale poem, “Saga of Applesauce,” during the Cowboy Poetry Gathering at the Mystic Theater in Marmarth.

For the last 25 years, Hanson has traded in her spurred boots for a softer life of attending events where she reads her poetry.

Her plethora of experiences throughout the years raising horses and working in the rodeo has helped her develop her love of poetry, which she has been writing since at least 1960.

Still, her past graces as one of the only—if not the only, as she claimed— female pickup men in

the PRCA will never be forgotten.

Born north of Jordan, Mont., Hanson lived in Miles City, Mont., where she and her ex-husband had a rodeo company, picking up the Bucking Horse Sale in Miles City for 25 years.

She found her start in the rodeo world working alongside her ex-husband. He was a pickup man and was first hired in 1961 to work the Bucking Horse Sale.

When another pickup hadn’t shown up to work, her then-husband suggested that Hanson help fill in.

“I had watched and helped enough,” she said, so she felt comfortable entering the arena. “I did it and got by, so the next year they hired me.” And they had again for the next several years.

A pickup man is the person that picks up cowboys from the horses when they’re bucking during a rodeo’s rough stock event.

swoop in after rides are finished or a contestant is bucked off, sidling up next to bareback or saddle bronc horses and helping herd ornery bulls out of the arena. They are integral to the safety of contestants, both the two- and four-legged variety.

She claimed she was the only woman “allowed” to pickup, but she never was able to get an official card that permitted her working the rodeo. Instead, most people involved with the

rodeos knew her and verbally granted her permission.

“Right now, they wouldn’t even know who I am,” she laughed, noting that so many years have passed since her glory days.

In her prime, she traveled across the country and, as she put it, survived a lot.

Working as a pickup man was dangerous.

Many times Hanson found herself on the ground with an out-of-control bucking horse

towering over her, an occupational hazard that she respected but didn’t balk at.

Hanson said on one occasion she was hit broadside by a bronc, throwing her from her horse and flat onto the ground. She was knocked out for a bit.

Another time, as she was attempting to pick up a cowboy from a horse, she inadvertently pulled him off too hard and he spurred her horse in the flank. The horse ended up bucking both onto the ground.

She was once hired to pick up a rodeo where she accidentally allowed a bronc to proceed ahead of her—she explained she should have been in front of it—and it passed under her horse’s neck and tipped them over.

She, again, fell onto the ground. But when she looked up, she couldn’t help but laugh.

“I never saw so many farmers in my life jump down off the coral fence and come to help me,” she chuckled. “I’m lying there, looking up, and all I can see are big overalls and

suspenders and these farmers asking, ‘Are you all right.’”

She found the incident quite funny. Throughout her years working the rodeo, she was fortunate not to be seriously injured.

But the hard work as a pickup man wasn’t the only thing that forced Hanson to adopt a tough demeanor; it was working in an industry ruled by men.

“You’ve got to prove yourself first,” she said.

“At first you get a lot of naysayers.”

Hanson said it was required that she be in good, physical shape and that she ride a good horse—“I mean a good one,” she reiterated. It was also important to work together when going up against broncos.

When she started working alongside her husband, she found that she wasn’t being paid as much as he was. It was discrimination, as she called it, based on her gender. Taking on as many horses, days and just as hard of work finally brought her level with the other rodeo men.

“It was a woman thing,” she admitted.

The main thing she discovered, while working on ranches, too, was to keep her mouth shut, ride a good horse and do the job.

“I learned that the hard way. You just shut up and do your job,” she said. “Then they’re great and they don’t care.”

to keep quiet and let the men be the boss. “You learn a lot,” she added.

“You pick your battles.”

Other than those initial experiences, Hanson said she never really had a problem as u a woman working in a man’s world. And she nt was respected as a strong ut pickup man, who only once was refused by a contestant, but it wasn’t because she’s female.

A male contestant had been blacklisted for e refusing to secure donations for the next bronc gh rider’s purse after he had - just won, which were d the rules. As secretary of the rodeo association, Hanson had to print the newsletter that listed all the people being blacklisted.

Fall 2015 back rider and as the whistle blew and he was ready to get off, she came alongside him only to hear him mutter some unkind words and told her he was not getting on her horse.

“I just pulled up and let him ride while that horse was bucking and beating him,” she said.

“I thought, let the horse beat you to death then, I don’t care.” She rolled her eyes.

When she rode up to her husband and explained the situation, he was furious. He headed out to the man, picked him up on his horse then threw him to the ground.

He made it clear that when a person came to pick you up, you best get on their horse.

She offered a little laugh.

Hanson retired from working as a pickup in

1986. She was later inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2003. The hall of fame is dedicated to honoring women of the American West who have displayed extraordinary courage and pioneering fortitude.

Now Hanson’s passion is focusing on poetry, using her past experiences to influence her writing. Her latest poem,

Bowman inducted into Hall of Fame Veterinarian, equine dentist gets honors

He is mindful of the way medicine was once practiced, when house calls were a way of life, when the practitioners of the science had a neighborly bedside manner and enjoyed visiting as much as doctoring. Above all, when the care and treatment of the patient went beyond the dictates of the bottom line and the corporate intrusions on time command attention to detail.

There is a price to be paid for such dedication to duty, however, and it's typically expressed with a question from one of his colleagues: "Have you

seen Bowman?"

The answer usually can be found by locating the barn sending the tempting scent of fresh bakery into the surrounding atmosphere.

and has the good Doc's ear, if, in fact, he doesn’t have theirs.

Canterbury Park has its Richard of North Dakota.

Dick Bowman has saved hundreds of horses

from a dismal life if not a dreadful demise once their racing careers have ended, hauling them 600 miles to his North Dakota ranch, then tending to their infirmities, fixing their teeth, feeding them and generally restoring them to the good health necessary to live out the remainder of their lives, quite often right there in rural Bowman, and all too often at his own expense.

At any given time, there are 50 to 60 horses located at his Second Chance Ranch, at one time as many as 80, all waiting for someone to adopt them, perhaps after seeing them on the Facebook program on which they can be found.

Bowman often gets repaid with the simple recognition the animals provide.

"When they first get to the ranch they want to be left alone. They don't want anything to do with people for a while," he said. "You can't even walk up to them. Eventually they come looking for us, wanting to be petted, wanting some contact with humans."

The transmission in his truck recently went out, so Bowman had to hire help to take a load of six horses to his ranch, a trip that, including the $300 in fuel needed for the trip, ran about $1,800.

"Caring for horses isn't cheap," Bowman added.

"The University of Montana farrier school comes out (to the ranch) every six weeks or so, and that can run $1,500. It’s another $1,000 to vaccinate them."

Donations help and adoption does, too, but

there is seldom enough in either case.

The best case for a former racehorse is a new line of work as a pleasure horse or jumper with a responsible owner.

Bowman had an equine dental practice involving clients in six states for 1 7 years, traveling 60,000 miles a year caring for the teeth of horses in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and even in Wyoming one year. He sold the practice a few years ago, allowing himself more time to devote to his cattle ranch, the horse adoption program and his duties at Canterbury Park during the live racing meet.

"It's never been a thing that made me money," he said. "But it's probably the most fulfilling thing I've done in life."

Bowman went to work out of veterinarian school at several tracks in Florida, which is where he met Camille McArdle, an early vet at Canterbury and currently a member of the Minnesota Racing Commission. He moved onto the backside at Canterbury in 1 986 and was a fixture until the track closed after the 1992 meet.

He returned sometime after the track reopened in 1995.

Bowman's outgoing, friendly demeanor has made him a favorite around the stables in Shakopee as well as in the test barn among the numerous young aspiring veterinarians.

USDA offers help to fire-affected farmers, ranchers The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reminds farmers and ranchers affected by the recent wildfires in Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington State that USDA has programs to assist with their recovery efforts.

The Farm Service Agency (FSA) can assist farmers and ranchers who lost livestock, grazing land, fences or eligible trees, bushes and vines as a result of a natural disaster. FSA administers a suite of safety-net programs to help producers recover from

eligible losses, including the Livestock Indemnity Program, the Livestock Forage Disaster Program, the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and FarmRaised Fish Program, and the Tree Assistance Program.

In addition, the FSA Emergency Conservation Program provides funding and technical assistance for farmers and ranchers to rehabilitate farmland damaged by natural disasters and for carrying out emergency water conservation measures in periods of severe drought.

Producers located in counties that received a primary or contiguous disaster designation are eligible for low-interest emergency loans to help them recover from production and physical losses.

Friend secretly enters area farm family into statewide contest

By Bryce Martin / Pioneer Bowman County is home to a large number of hardworking farming and ranching families.

Every so often, one gets a chance to shine. This week marked the moment when the Kinsey family stepped into the spotlight.

Scrolling through her newsfeed on Facebook, a familiar photo popped out to Joy Kinsey of Bowman, a photo of her family that she hadn’t posted.

She noticed it was for a contest.

Robin Welch, a friend of the Kinsey family, had so much admiration for the Kinsey’s that she entered them into a contest to become the CHS Farm

Family of the Year, sponsored by CHS Inc. and North Dakota State University.

“It’s exciting,” Kinsey told the Pioneer. “It’s very neat.” She seemed somewhat at a loss for words.

NDSU will honor a farm family that the community believes is outstanding.

The school teamed up with CHS, a Fortune 100 company diversified in energy, grains and foods, to give-away prizes and a trip to an upcoming game.

Kinsey was unsure of being interviewed for a story since they’ve only been nominated—she was clearly appreciative but was quick to explain that so many other families also deserved recog-

When asked if she thought Kinsey was a modest person, Welch said, “Oh my lands, yes.

She doesn’t like recognition or accolades. She just does the things she does because that is how she grew up.”

Kinsey had no idea she was entered into the contest until she discovered the photo on Monday. It came as a surprise. Later that day, Welch had posted a link to the online contest on Kinsey’s social media page.

“I totally appreciate

how (Robin) sees us and how she appreciates what we do,” Kinsey said.

Kinsey and her husband, Zach, are part of Soriede Charolais Ranch.

Together they have three children, Kaylee, Casey and Johnny.

Welch randomly came across the contest on social media. Intrigued, and with a deserving family in mind, she investigated further to see what she had to do to pay tribute to a local family.

“The Kinsey family is a true working family,” Welch wrote as part of the contest entry. “They not only work with the cattle, but volunteer in our community in so many ways.

The kids are out doing chores, having mud fights

and teaching their ‘city’ friends the way of life out on the farm/ranch.

“The Kinsey Family works, works and works some more and rarely takes the time deserved to relax and have fun away from home.”

Welch said the Kinsey’s play a large role in her daughters 4-H group.

When she thinks of a family unit, the Kinsey’s immediately pop into her mind.

Without them, said Welch, my “city girl” Emma wouldn’t have a place to get her boots dirty and play in the hay.

She loves to go there and is a part of the family and expected to work as a part of the family when she is there.

The country surrounding Rhame is highlighted by the buttes that crest its horizon, wide-open hill country and a ranching tradition that marks the transition into North Dakota’s Badlands. For Larry Njos and his wife Peg, these “foothills” are home.

Larry, a 35-year North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) mem-

ber, is the NDSA’s 2015 Rancher of the Year. He was honored with the award at the annual banquet during the NDSA’s 86th Annual Convention & Trade Show at the Ramada in Bismarck on Sept. 26.

“I think of myself as a traditional rancher,” he said. “We continue to update our practices, but there have been a lot of generations previous that built this, and it takes a lot for me to say that they were wrong.”

Today, the Njos family operates a 260-head Angus cow-calf operation. But, prior to Larry’s father starting the herd in 1964, the Pronghorn Ranch was known for its sheep production.

Larry graduated from Rhame High School and immediately began ranching full-time. He said ranching is the only career he has ever wanted.

“Ranching is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and to be named by my fellow ranchers for this award means so much,” Larry said. “I’ve always looked at awards like this as something other people win, not me. I was completely surprised when I got that nomination letter.”

Larry’s father, Selmer, moved to the ranch from his father’s homestead in Harding County, S.D. As

part of a large family, his father served four years in Panama during World War II before moving back to southwestern North Dakota and starting the ranch.

Before moving to the ranch, Selmer lived in town in Bowman.

servation. Larry points to a strong working relationship with his family as a primary reason for the ranch’s success.

“Having Peg and the kids there, that’s an incentive for me to keep making the place better and better,” he said.

“If I didn’t have them, I don’t know where I’d be.

I probably wouldn’t have the same initiative to keep up these days.”

Larry’s and Peg’s two sons both grew up in the ranching tradition.

Royce, their oldest, is now a bank executive in Red Lodge, Mont., where he lives with his wife Jackie, daughter Peyton and son Miles.

Ryan is a full partner in the ranch, where he lives with his wife Nicole and sons Owen and Ian. “Any decisions that are made on the ranch are made together as partners,” Larry said. “We’re okay there. You have to work at it. There’s always moments, but I had a good working relationship with my dad and now that has just kept working with my son.”

Ryan took to one of the Njos family’s longest held traditions, leaving home for a brief stint as an assistant driver with the Priefert Percheron Draft Horse Hitch. The family has always owned a team of Belgian draft horses.

Larry used to raise the breed on the Pronghorn Ranch, and continues to feed with the horses at times today.

Larry grew up riding and working horseback.

As an adult, he teamroped on both the head-

Larry said horses built a sense of community for him as a child, when he and his neighbors spent most of their free time roping and riding the countryside south of Rhame.

“We have great neighbors,” he said. “They would come on the run if we needed them. We all used to get together at branding time and rope calves.”

As they’ve gotten older, they’ve changed their method of branding to include the use of a calf table, but continue to work alongside their neighbors.

Larry also continues to give back to his commu-

nity, serving on the Badlands Ministries Board of Directors for one term; the Bethany Lutheran Church Board for 21 years; the Rhame Rural Fire Protection Board for more than 20 years and as a member of the Rhame Saddle Club.

For Larry, the key to the Pronghorn Ranch’s success is his family, neighbors and hard work.

“All of my experiences have helped me,” he said. “Growing up out here, none of it hurt me.

It helped me appreciate what we have now.

Ranch life is a good way of life.”

Rhame resident’s photo receives state honors A photographer and artist received an honorable mention this week for her submission to the governor’s photo contest.

Nicole Njos of Rhame was honored for her submission to the contest entitled “Running Beauty Earlier this week, Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley recognized the winning photographs and honorable mentions from the 12th annual North Dakota Governor’s Photo Contest in a ceremony in Memorial Hall of the North Dakota Capitol building.

Photos were judged on originality, subject matter, visual appeal and ability to portray North Dakota as a legendary travel destination in the categories of adventure, attractions, events, people, scenery and wildlife.

The North Dakota Governor’s Photo Contest began as a collaborative program between the Governor’s Office and North Dakota Tourism, and has grown to include AAA as a contest sponsor and the NDCA as a collaborative partner.

The 2015 winning photos will be on display during the months of October, November and December at the Capitol in the offices of Governor Jack Dalrymple, First Lady Betsy Dalrymple and Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. This is part of a cooperative program between NDCA and the First Lady’s office. Canvas displays were printed and sponsored in part by Mathison’s.

Top category photographers will receive a $200 cash prize for each winning photo and have their work featured in North Dakota Tourism’s marketing materials, along with even greater exposure through contest partner AAA. A Best of Show photo was selected from the winning photographs, and the photographer received an additional $300 cash prize and a free, one-year basic membership to AAA. Baker to Host 2016 State High School Rodeo Finals

By Sherry Phebus Vogel / Fallon County Times Word was received earlier this week that our community has been awarded the bid to host the MHSRA finals next summer, June 7-12, 2016.

When Kalispell, MT chose not to host the event this year the Fallon County Fair Board met with the county commissioners to discuss welcoming the finals to Baker, MT. Fallon County is prime for such a venture. The Fallon County fairgrounds is one of the finest in the state with the recent addition of the new 1338-seat capacity covered grandstand.

Also completed just this past season is the

high school rodeo season. It is a “big deal” with an estimated 300-400 excited young cowboys and cowgirls from across the state coming together to compete. They will be followed by approximately 1200-1500 devoted family, friends, and fans. Many will be in need of food and lodging although some will come with self-contained RV pro-rodeo arena.

“This is a huge undertaking for a small community,” stated Jerrid Geving, fair board member. “It has always been held in a bigger community like Kalispell or Bozeman, but I think people will like the small town hospitality.”

Radar back in service Crucial to farmers, radar now rests at new airport

By Bryce Martin / Pioneer A month-long process to move Bowman’s radar finally ended last week when it arrived at its resting spot at the new Bowman airport.

The massive structure, which sat at the previous airport since 1997, has played a pivotal role in the region’s weather modification program.

As of last week, it’s back up and running after being taken out of service in preparation for its relocation.

The radar was shutdown Sept. 16 and was down for about a month while crews readied the advanced electronic equipment for the move.

The radar’s owner, the North Dakota State Water Commission, had to get contractors in line for

the electrical work, crane service and technician service.

A building at the new airport was constructed with the sole purpose to house the radar’s transmitter and computer equipment.

The radar provides coverage for the southwestern part of North Dakota, for southeast Montana and northwestern South Dakota where coverage from the National Weather Service offices in Bismarck, Rapid City and Billings don’t reach.

“Bowman really helps to fill that void,” said Darin Langerud, director of the North Dakota Atmospheric Resource Board in Bismarck, a division of the state water commission.

The radar was previously used in Bismarck as property of the National Weather Service.

around in a 360-degree sweep. Depending on the scan strategy being used, the radar steps up the dish to point up a little bit further, several times, taking a mosaic of the entire sky.

But its not pointed straight up, 90 degrees.

That’s where a thing called the cone of silence comes into play. It sits over the radar, like a shadow, not allowing radar images from that area, but Langerud cautioned that it’s very small and almost unnoticeable to people that aren’t familiar with it.

“It’s not terribly material to the coverage of the radar over that location,” he said.

An Autumn Bucket List

Recently, my out-of-state college roommate called to say that she and her husband need a respite from their crazed, big-city schedules. She thought a trip to North Dakota, the "heartland," is exactly what they needed. Her request: Suggest a half dozen things to do in your state, this fall. Now. My college roommate is a city girl through-and-through (and through), so in a state flush with natural beauty and outdoor activities, my goal is to give her a balanced view of all North Dakota has to offer. Having moved here myself from a large metropolitan area, I think I have some perspective on what visitors might consider especially unique, fun and memorable in our fine state. As I brainstormed, I felt inspired to get busy showing my own children my ND to-do list. Here's what I concocted. (By Marnie Lahtinen)

expanse of prairie grasslands and eroding clay hills took my breath away when I first saw it: The view embodied my youthful imagination of what the wild, wild west must be like. Beneath scopious skies roam buffalo, elk and wild horses. The effects of wind, water, fire, and wild temperature variations are evident everywhere you look. Stop at the South Unit Visitor Center, and then take a drive along the road through that portion of the park. Feeling vigorous? There are plenty of places to hike, and the Maah Daah Hey Trail offers mountain bikers, hikers and horseback riders 144 miles of trail and unending adventure (not for the faint of heartplease visit with locals/ park personnel before attempting). Check out quirky Medora, with it's faux western shop fronts and eclectic gift stores. A must: The Cowboy Cafe for breakfast. You'll understand why I sent you there.
