Lumber supplier has deep roots... And just about anything for your next project The story of Tillamook County began on August 14, 1788 when Captain Robert Gray, an American sailing the sloop “Lady Washington,” anchored in Tillamook Bay thinking he had found the “great river of the West.” This was the first landing on the Oregon coast. In its early years, the town of Tillamook, the first community to be settled in the county, bore the names Lincoln and Hoquarten, the latter believed to be an Indian name meaning “the landing.” Its name was eventually changed to Tillamook, an Indian word meaning “land of many waters.” Rosenberg Builders Supply was once A. F. Coats Lumber Company. Coats Mill had a seven and a half mile logging railroad on the Tillamook River. Coats Lumber Mill employed more than 75 employees, and daily manufactured 80,000 shingles and produced anywhere from 1,400 to 2,000 board feet. Coats Mill, built in 1907, has constantly been altered. Back then it was meant to accommodate all the lumber and equipment for Coats. After many remodels, additions and face lifts, the building today barely resembles what was built in 1907, and changes are still underway. That was just the start of what the employees all know now as home. Rosenberg’s has been an established company in Tillamook County for many years. Coats was purchased in 1962 by Glenn and Verna Rosenberg. Their son, Doug Rosenberg, started working at the family store at a young age. In 1969, Doug took over the family store. Originally, Rosenberg’s only sold wood products, but that soon changed as community needs were much greater. As those needs grew, Rosenberg’s decided to partner with ACE Hardware. The current owner of Rosenberg’s is Loten Hooley; he closed Loten Hooley Construction to take up a new dream of owning a
lumber store. Year after year, he continues to support our local schools and community projects. He takes great pride in his community, family and friends. Bathroom renovations Bathroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. The popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms. While “easy” is a relative term, there are ways homeowners willing to make certain concessions can keep the work and cost of a bathroom renovation to a minimum.
When possible, covering up what you have in the bathroom is much less expensive and less laborintensive than tearing out existing fixtures and floors and replacing them anew. Resurfacing can extend to refinishing bathtubs to installing shower liners. Those who have unsightly walls or wallpaper that they’re just not ready to remove may consider using wainscotting to cover a portion of the room or even tiling entire walls. It is important to note that resurfacing and covering up items in the bathroom should only be reserved for cosmetic fixes. Scale back on materials One way to save money on a bathroom renovation project is to choose less expensive materials. For example, you may not need to install travertine or marble flooring in a space where less expensive flooring like vinyl is adequate. Advancements in vinyl flooring have enabled this affordable material to mimic the look of more expensive materials at
a fraction of the cost. When redoing tile on walls and shower enclosures, many domesticallyproduced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.
Paint Do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom. Dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. Cavernous bathrooms that
look empty may prove more inviting with darker hues. Pick a paint that is designed for bathroom application so that it will inhibit the growth of mold and mildew.

Energy Saving Advice from Tillamook PUD Tillamook PUD is committed to energy efficiency. Everyone is interested in using electricity wisely and saving energy dollars. Reducing your energy consumption doesn’t have to take a lot of time or money or compromise your comfort. Try these simple steps to energy savings in your home.
HEATING • Don’t touch it! Before bedtime turn down your thermostat for more energy savings. If you don’t want to wake up to a cold house, let a programmable thermostat turn the heat up before you wake up. • Insulate your home properly. A large portion of your heat can be lost through your ceiling, walls and floor. That means you’re paying for something you’re not keeping. Proper insulation will keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The higher the “R” value, the greater the insulation power. • Keep it clean. A furnace with a dirty filter has to work harder to heat air in your home. Check filters at least twice during the heating season, and either clean or replace them. • Wear the layered look. Consider wearing layers of clothing inside the house. It will keep your body heat in and you won’t need to turn up the thermostat. • Close them at night. Closing blinds and drapes at night will help keep the cold out and the warmth in. In cooler months be sure to open them in the morning so the warmth of the sun can help heat your house.
LIGHTING • Let the sun shine in.
Why use the lights when you can use the sun? Open blinds and curtains during the day to take advantage of the natural light. Use compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). CFLs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to ten times longer than incandescent bulbs with comparable light output. Although they cost more, they are worth the investment. • Plan for that vacation. If you’re going away, you’ll probably want to leave some lights on for security reasons. If so, consider buying timers to turn your lights on and off instead of leaving them on 24 hours a day. • Use only what you need. Do you ever go into a room and turn on all the
lights? Or leave landscaping lighting on all night? Inside and outside, use only as much light as you need.
WATER HEATING • Consider high efficiency water heaters. If you are in the market for a new water heater, consider buying a high efficiency model. It may cost you a little more to buy, but it costs less to use, so you will save over the life of the unit. • Set the thermostats properly. To operate most efficiently, your water heater should be set between 120° F and 130° F. If you have a dishwasher, you may need to increase the temperature settings to 140°.
Refer to the owner’s manual for the proper temperature settings for your dishwasher. • Reduce the flow. Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators in your bathrooms and kitchen. They can cut up to 11% of your water use, which will reduce your energy use and water bills. Also consider taking short showers rather than baths. • Fix those drips. If you have a leaky faucet, you’re pouring money down the drain. A slow drip can waste up to 450 gallons of water a month. If it’s hot water, you are not only paying to heat the water, but you’re paying for the water. • Use cold water when you can.
Use cold water instead of hot to wash clothes or rinse dishes. Hot water for dishes uses about two kilowatt hours and washing a load of clothes in hot water uses about five kilowatt hours.
REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS • Go for high efficiency. New more efficient refrigerators use half as much energy as many older models of the same size, so they cost half as much to operate. • Use the proper temperature settings. Check your thermostat controls. To work most efficiently your refrigerator should be set between 38° and 40° and the freezer at 0°. • Keep it maintained and cleaned. Check the door seals and
if one is cracked, or cold air is leaking out, the seal should be replaced. Coils, found on the back or bottom of the refrigerator, should be vacuumed and checked at least twice a year. • Unplug it. Some people keep their old refrigerator or freezer in the garage, but if it isn’t filled to capacity you could be wasting as much as 2,400 kilowatt hours a year for an extra refrigerator, or up to 1,200 kilowatt hours a year for an extra freezer.

How to rid your home of drafts Think about what it might be like if you turned up the heat and then opened all of the windows in your home. All of that warm air would rush right out, and you would be left with a cold home and a hefty heating bill. A home that is full of drafts is inefficient and expensive. And drafty homes are not just a problem when the weather is cold, as air that seeps in when you’re trying to keep the home cool can be an inefficient nuisance as well. Higher energy bills and wasted resources do not have to be tolerated if you simply scour your home for drafts, sealing them to cut energy costs and make the home more comfortable. Drafts are often small cracks around windows and doors, but there are many other places where drafts can form. Knowing some of the less visible spots where drafts come from may help you to seal out unwanted cold air more effectively.
Attic Homes that feature attics with pull-down stairs tend to be drafty. In such homes, a large hole is cut out of the ceiling so residents can access the attic. So instead of thick insulation, these homes may
only have a sheet of plywood blocking your interior space from the outdoors, as many attics are directly vented to the roof. To determine if there is a leak, turn on the attic light, close the attic door, and check to see if you can see the light on from below. If you can, then there is a gap letting both the light and air escape. In addition to using flexible rubber around the opening of the attic to better seal the door when it is closed, you can think about adding a thicker, more insulated door.
Dryer vents
The standard home laundry dryer vents outdoors via an exhaust duct. This duct is open to the outdoors, and it may be letting cold air into the home. That’s because there is typically a flimsy flapper made of sheet metal on the outside of the vent to help protect against air infiltration. But over time dryer lint can accumulate at the vent opening, causing the metal flapper to stay open when it should close. Homeowners can invest in dryer seals that close the vent when the dryer is not in use. Not only does this prevent cold air from entering the house, but also it keeps out pests, like bugs and rodents.

Pipes Check pipes that exit the home, such as those that feed outdoor water spigots, as such pipes can let cold air back into the house. The same can be said for waste pipes. Also, check to see if pipes that connect to garages, basements and crawl spaces are not insulated. Use sealant around these pipes to block drafts into the home. Foam insulation can be sprayed into small crevices, where it will expand and harden, blocking off air access. These damp, cool spots are also great places for insects to enter the home. Sealing drafts also may prevent bugs from entering the home.
Fireplaces
Although fireplaces often make for decorative and appealing accents to a home, many are not effective sources of ambient heat. They may draw more warm air out of the flue than they bring into the house. When a fireplace is not in use, air can rise out of the chimney and a draft can be felt in the home. Some studies indicate that an open damper on an unused fireplace, even in a wellinsulated home, can increase overall heating and cooling energy consumption by 30 percent. If you simply must have a fireplace, remember to always keep the damper shut when the fireplace is not in use and use a glass cover you can seal tightly to further block the opening to the fireplace from your living space. Fireplace plugs, which can keep out drafts during the season when fireplaces are not in use, may also be a worthwhile investment.

Outlets and light switches can be significant sources of drafts in a home. Check to see that the switch plates are secure. If drafts still come through, then employ outlet draft blockers to prevent cool air from entering the home and warm air from exiting it.

Port of Tillamook Bay’s digester: it’s great for the environment A decade ago, the Port of Tillamook Bay was on the cutting edge of green energy by providing one of the first community digesters in the nation. The Darlene Hooley Digester converted manure from more than 4,000 dairy cows into electricity. Now, 10 years later, the port is still leading the nation in environmental consciousness by constructing a newer, updated digester. The $6 million project, paid for by state dollars and funds awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency following the loss of their railroad in 2007, was completed in July of this year. According to port manager Michele Bradley, this
new digester was built to specifically accommodate the needs of the farms around the area. The manure that the port receives from the farms is processed in the digester and then returned to the farm to be used as fertilizer, cow bedding and nursery soil amendments. The methane gas collected is then converted into electricity to run the plant and sell back into the energy grid. During this process, harmful greenhouse gases are trapped and sequestered. A single cow can produce 2.5 tons of greenhouse gases every year. The digester captures approximately 5,000 tons of these
emissions every year, which is roughly equivalent of taking 1,000 passenger cars off the road over the same one-year period. On top of that, the product that is then returned to the farms has less smell, no pathogens and no fiber so it absorbs more quickly into the soil. But the port isn’t stopping there. A separate 4,320-squarfot building will be constructed so the separated solids can be dried and turned into usable fiber and bagged for sale and shipment. This future service could generate up to $120,000 a month in sales and create several new, local jobs.
