illamook County is rich with T adventures–both indoor and in nature–and we celebrate the arts.
Dotted with small communities, a multitude of parks and wideopen coastline, this Pacific Coast region of north Oregon caters to the outdoor enthusiast, or to those seeking a pleasant and relaxing respite from hectic day-to-day life. It offers a great opportunity to bond with loved ones and share adventure. Picturesque beaches, rivers perfect for recreation, serene lakes, forests and farm country shape the character of this part of rural Oregon. At the northern border of Tillamook County, take in Oswald West State Park for a day of surfing waves, or gather for a picnic. Hike through old growth rain forest and explore Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain. Later on, enjoy the communities of Manzanita, Nehalem, Wheeler and Rockaway Beach – each with their own unique attractions and
seasonal events. Farther south, don’t miss the fishing and logging community of Garibaldi with its lively marina and scenic location on Tillamook Bay, or Bay City and the delicious Tillamook Bay oyster. Tillamook is our county seat. The town is set in a pastural setting between the Pacific Ocean and Coast Range. It is a shopping hub and features several popular tourist attractions. Here you will find the home of Tillamook Cheese and famous visitor center. Tillamook Pioneer Museum, Blue Heron French Cheese Company, small shops, popular brew pubs, food carts and restaurants make Tillamook a good stopover. Heading west, it’s only a few miles back to the beach and Netarts, Cape Lookout State Park, Oceanside and agate hunting, then on to Cape Mears Lighthouse. East of Tillamook, if you follow Highway 6 you’ll find the Tillamook Forest Center. It

features outdoor hiking in wooded settings along the Wilson River, as well as a history center where you can learn all about the famous Tillamook Burns. Following Highway 101 south of Tillamook you will find the Tillamook Air Museum, originally built as a blimp hanger in WWII, followed by the tiny communities of Beaver, Hebo and Cloverdale. Take Brooten Rd to Pacific City to see Oregon’s lesser known Haystack Rock and let your kids get their wiggles out climbing up the huge sand dune at Cape Kiwanda. Further south is the sleepy community of Neskowin, perfect for a secluded beach retreat. Tillamook County is a go-to area for sports fishing and hunting, and for experiencing locallysourced cuisine. Get in touch with your inner angler in pursuit of the Chinook salmon, steelhead and a variety of trout. Or, let the captain guide you toward ocean fishing adventure on a chartered excursion where you can catch Albacore tuna and popular west coast seafood. You can drop crab pots for the renowned Dungeness Crab at one of several local marinas. For great shoreline adventure, grab a clam shovel and harvest cockles, blue gapers or butter clams in Tillamook Bay. Stop by a fresh seafood market and pick up some Netarts Bay oysters, smoked fish and many other local seafood delicacies. Enjoy wine tasting, famous ice cream, locally-crafted cheese and award-winning beer at local eateries and attractions throughout the county. During the growing season, many of our communities feature farmers markets packed with vendors selling locally grown food. swald West O State Park is located on U.S.
Hwy.101 four miles north of Manzanita. It is famous for the secluded beach, Short Sands, and includes 16 miles of hiking trails through old growth forest to tip of Cape Falcon, and 13 miles of the Oregon Coast Trail, this is a popular surfing spot. One of the most spectacular State Parks in Oregon this 2,484 acre park encompasses a 13 mile stretch of the Oregon Coast Trail weaves tjhrough the area and two prominent headlands: Cape Falcon and
Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain are included and offer great hiking opportunities. Temperate rainforests leading to Short Sands Beach are just a half mile hike down a well kept trail.

Neahkahnie Mountain, a 1,70 0 -foot peak. The town is bracketed by t wo huge state parks, Oswald West State Park on the nor th and Nehalem Bay State Park on the south, which ex tends to the tip of the spit enclosing Nehalem Bay. A popular trail up Neahkahnie Mountain leads to a breathtaking panoramic view of the nor thern Oregon c oast and the Pacif ic Oc ean. Legend has it that there is treasure buried on Neahkahnie Mountain, but it has never been found. Nehalem was a lumbering town; logs c ame to town by way of a rail line that ran up the Nehalem River, and par t of the mill was built over the river. Today, only pilings remain, and the town is known more for its f ishing.

Nehalem, and the river and bay at tached, are named for the tribe that “ Nehalem” is a Salish word that means “plac e where people live.” The town was set tled in the 1850s bec ause of its proximit y to the river and to the lush farmlands upstream. It got a post of f ic e in 1871.

Manzanita, Nehalem & Wheeler
Nehalem has one of t wo Nor th Count y elementar y schools. The old Nehalem elementar y school building, which has Nor th Count y’s only swimming pool, is now home to the Nor th Count y Recreation District and houses the of f ices of the Por t of Nehalem, and classrooms for Tillamook Bay Communit y College; the auditorium is used for concer ts, and per formances by the Riverbend Players theater group. Nehalem is the home of f ice
Wheeler was incorporated as a cit y in 1913. Prosperous in its early years because of its location along the railroad line that ran from Tillamook through the Coast Range into the Willamet te Valley. Wheeler is located on a sweeping cur ve of Nehalem Bay. Downtown is along Hw y. 101, and the homes are situated along the steep hills that give a near stadium seating ef fect for an amazing view of Nehalem Bay. In the 199 0s Wheeler formed the Wheeler
Business Association and brought together merchants and residents to reinvent the town, organizing events aimed and at tracting visitors. Today, a variet y of shops and restaurants line U.S. 101 and adjoining side streets. Antique stores invite visitors to stop in downtown, and the Old Wheeler Hotel at tracts those looking for either a thrill or a quaint stay in a period decorated inn.
There’s a water front park, boat launch and marina in the center of town to at tract spor ting enthusiasts. Fishing and crabbing are popular in the area, and the train depot in Wheeler is one of the stops for the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. Oh, and you can’t forget the numerous kayaking oppor tunities and, of course, the newly established Oregon Coast Railriders!

Tillamook
Air Museum
A
s part of an ambitious plan to protect the west coast from enemy attack during WW ll, Naval Air Station Tillamook was built with two massive, wooden, 1,000ft. long hangars, each using enough wood to build 279 three-bedroom homes. Designed to house blimps that would be used for hunting Japanese submarines, the first hangar, Hangar B, was begun in November of 1942 and completed in a remarkable 9 months. The second hangar, Hangar A, was completed in an astounding 27 working days! With the ability to fly low and slow, and with large Plexiglas windows, these blimps were ideal platforms to spot enemy craft. With the war ending in 1945, the air station was closed soon after in 1948 and the hangars were used for many years thereafter for a variety of purposes. In 1989, the Museum’s Hangar B was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, permanently cementing its role as a local AND national treasure. In 1991, the illusionist, David Copperfield, used Hangar B for the site of one of his television specials, where he made a train from the Orient Express, disappear. In 1994, Hangar B was chosen for the site of the new Tillamook Air Museum, a museum dedicated to preserving and protecting our shared aviation heritage and wartime history. With over 25 aircraft, interactive exhibits, and an Exhibit Hall with rare wartime and aviation artifacts, the Tillamook Air Museum is a sight to behold for young and old alike! Latimer Quilt
& Textile Center T
he Latimer Quilt and Textile Center, opened in 1991, is housed in the “new” Maple Leaf School, built in the 1921 (The original one-room schoolhouse, now gone, had been moved here in 1900.) The Center has exhibits of antique and contemporary quilts, weaving and spinning demonstrations, and offers instruction in various textile arts. The Center hosts meetings of the Oregon Coast Fiber-Artisans, the Ocean Breeze RugKrafters, the Tillamook County Quilt Guild, Cordelia’s Knitters and the Latimer Weavers. Regular classes are offered to 4H and High School Students, plus workshops and adult classes periodically. There is a climate controlled textile repository, a gift shop with hand-made items, books and vintage textiles. The Center’s extensive research library covers every aspect of fiber arts with emphasis on quilting, hand weaving spinning and rug hooking. Many of the books are rare and out of print. All Library materials are available for use on site for research. Also included are collections of quilt blocks and patterns and newspaper needlework clippings.

I
n its early years, the town of Tillamook, the first community to be settled in the county, bore the unofficial names Lincoln and Hoquarton, a native word meaning “the landing.” Its name was eventually changed to Tillamook, another native word meaning “the many peoples of the Nehelim.” William Clark of explorers Lewis and Clark wrote in 1806 of the Killamox Indians but according to research by the Clatsop-Nehalem Confederated Tribes, the ‘K’ was not used in the name of the tribe. Local folklore used Land of Many Waters as the meaning of Tillamook. Though it is a fact that Tillamook is a land of many waters it is not the true meaning of the name Tillamook. When Thomas Stillwell laid out his town of “Lincoln” in 1861, there were already other settled towns in Tillamook County – Bay City, Garibaldi, and Nehalem. When the post office was established in 1866 the name was changed to avoid confusion with Lincoln City, which already existed further south. Tillamook became the county seat in 1873. In 1893, a great portion of the city, located on 1st Street at the time, burned to the ground. Downtown Tillamook originally fronted Hoquarton Slough, where oceangoing vessels used to tie up and there was a floating hardware store; after
the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 101) was improved downtown’s axis shifted and became north-south, along the highway. On the east side of town, out Third Street, is the county fairgrounds, as well as Tillamook Bay Community College. To the west, on Highway 131 to Netarts, Oceanside and the “Three Capes Scenic Loop,” is the Tillamook Regional Medical Center and its associated clinics and doctors’ offices. Motels, restaurants, food carts, breweries, family attractions, service shops and specialty shops line U.S. Highway 101 north of the city. The town’s center features restaurants, flower and gift shops, handmade items, beauty salons, a historic movie theater. At the north end of town, on the north side of Conde McCullough’s famous Wilson River bridge, is the Tillamook County Creamery Association cheese factory, the biggest tourist attraction in Oregon, drawing over one million visitors each year from around the world. Tillamook has eight city parks; there are boat launch ramps at the Sue H. THE BLUE HERON FRENCH CHEESE COMPANY
The Blue Heron French Cheese Company was founded by Denny and Chris Pastega in 1979. The historic 1930’s Dutch Colonial barn was previously a Grade A Jersey Farm ran by the local Zwald family. Upon purchase of the building, the Pastegas converted the barn into an old-world style cheese factory (producing French-style brie cheese), and a gourmet food and wine tasting shop. Today the Blue Heron has grown to include the surrounding 40-acre property and boasts a full service delicatessen, expanded wine and cheese tasting room, petting farm, and one-of-a-kind gift shop. Visitors enjoy free samplings of gourmet local and imported cheeses, including famous Blue Heron Brie (four flavors include traditional, herb and garlic, black pepper, and smoked). All guests are also encouraged to sample our best-selling Riverhouse Dressings and other rotating local and
imported cheeses. Complimentary samples of locally made jams and jellies, salad dressings, dips, mustards and hot sauces are also located throughout the store. In the summer months the Blue Heron petting farm and picnic area is a bustling attraction. Guests can purchase a bag of feed to share with the goats, chickens, donkeys, and more barnyard friends. The petting farm is a great place for photo opportunities. Visitors of all ages also enjoy exploring the collection of vintage tractors and farm equipment displayed on the Blue Heron grounds. THE TILLAMOOK COUNTY FAIR
The Tillamook County Fair was initially held at a site on Third Street near what is now downtown Tillamook. The current 68-acre fairgrounds were donated in 1925, and the first building was constructed that same year. The structure is recognizable by the domed roof and is still in use today as the main exhibit hall. Currently, the fairgrounds has 27 buildings, including the main exhibit hall, a convention center and auditorium, 4H Hall, Tennis & Pickle ball courts and an Indoor riding pavilion. There are six livestock barns and horse stables, covered Grandstands, rodeo arena and a half mile racetrack. The county fair in August is the biggest draw to the fairgrounds, but the facilities are in use year round. The fair annually highlights the Pig N Ford races, the only auto race in the world involving Model T Fords and live pigs, live Pari-Mutuel horse racing, Tillamook being one of only five locations in the State to showcase this event and home to some of the best 4H & FFA student exhibits and animal showmanship. The fairgrounds also host many large events such as the Tillamook County Rodeo, Jersey & Holstein State show and Sale, Jeep Jamboree, Bulls N Barrels, and the Home and Garden show. Multiple buildings within the grounds can be rented to facilitate
a wide variety of meetings, events, parties and gatherings. There is a Roller Skating Rink open year round for private skate parties, an indoor Tennis & Pickle ball court, a renovated 4H dormitory with full kitchen, used for parties, meetings and overnight stays. The convention center and auditorium is the largest open space available used primarily for wedding receptions, dinner & auctions, family reunions, local fundraisers and corporate presentations. The fairgrounds is a great place for hosting events, with two commercial kitchens, tables & chairs, 5pc stage set-up, portable bars or buffet counters and an outdoor

downtown Tillamook is an historical artifact itself. Built in 1905, it was Tillamook County’s second courthouse. It is located across the street from the “new” courthouse, built in 1933. The 16 rooms of exhibits include a room dedicated to local Native Americans, a pioneer home, a military room, and a Victorian-era bedroom. The Alex Walker Natural History Room houses an extensive collection of birds, animals, rocks, fossils, and butterflies, said to be one of the best displays on the West Coast. Another gallery displays a portion of the late U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield’s collection of Lincoln memorabilia. The Pioneer Museum is home to the last stagecoach to cross the
mountains from Yamhill County in 1911, a collection of logging, dairy and farming tools, and a replica of the stump lived in by Joseph Champion, Tillamook County’s first settler. Rotating exhibits in the Main and Northwest Galleries host everything from artists’ exhibitions to historical featured shows. Five miles north of Tillamook, the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum has developed Kilchis Point Reserve, two miles of interpretive trails on 70 of the 200 acres it owns in west Bay City. This site is opened to the public for hiking, nature walks, and picnics from dawn to dusk daily.

eaver is named after the state of Oregon’s official animal. The Beaver post office was established in 1889; at the time, six lumber mills called Beaver or nearby Blaine home. Today, Beaver has less than 150 people, but has a post office and a grocery store that also sells guns. Here you’ll find the only gas on Hwy. 101 between Tillamook and Lincoln City. The Beaver Mercantile building (1906) is a former cheese factory, one of several that existed in the county before the Tillamook County Creamery Association absorbed them all. Highway 101 makes a 90-degree turn at Beaver; the “extra” road (a left turn if you’re headed south on the highway, straight if you’re headed north) is Blaine Road, which six miles upriver (at the tiny community of Blaine) becomes the Upper Nestucca River Road, officially a National Forest Scenic Back Roads Byway, The back road to Carlton, in the Willamette Valley. The road is drivable by passenger cars much of the year. No one really knows how Hebo got its name, the post office was established in 1882; back then, Hebo had a lumber mill, dance hall, and even its own newspaper. Hebo straddles a sharp bend in Highway 101; here, the “Hebo Highway,” State Hwy. 22, branches off and follows an old Indian trail to the Willamette Valley. Hebo is the only Tillamook County community to have a song written about it. The “Welcome to Hebo Waltz” portrays the community as a ghost town.

Little Cloverdale (population around 200), two miles south of Hebo on Hwy. 101, was founded in 1884 by Charles Ray, who named the town after a favorite place of his in California. The post office was established in 1889 in Ray’s store.
Cloverdale’s turn-of-the-last-century downtown, dominated by the spire of the old and picturesque St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, has a veterinary hospital, bank, auto parts store, farm store, and a few galleries, shops and restaurants. A statue of an angel, memorializing former residents who died in service to our country, stands next to the bridge on the Nestucca River. The Nestucca Valley Junior/ Senior High School is located on the steep hill behind the church, and the Elementary School is south of town on Hwy. 101. When you visit, make sure and check out Munson Creek Falls, the highest waterfall in the Coast Range mountains.

here are no cities in south Tillamook County. All the communities are unincorporated, including the one with “city” in its name. Most started as market centers for local farmers or fishermen; some later developed lumber mills. A couple were founded as – and still are - resort communities.
In addition to its post office and fire station, Neskowin has restaurants that offer delicious food and a gourmet grocery. A variety of lodging can be found!
Located near the beach, the little village of Neskowin (the name means “place of plenty fish”), founded in 1910, has a year-round population somewhere between 100-150, and is the southernmost community in Tillamook County. Neskowin is a coastal village with a lot of charm, a friendly neighborhood feel and a magnificent natural setting. The beautiful beach is over 3 miles long, stretching north to the Nestucca River mouth and on the south end, dramatic Cascade Head rises over 1200ft. Most roads in the village are one lane wide (and also function as sidewalks); there is nowhere to park or turn around an RV except at the wayside next to Highway 101. Neskowin is the site of Cascade Head (the southern boundary of the county), and of Proposal Rock, site of numerous engagements and weddings. Immediately south of the wayside you can access Neskowin Beach State Park, and a few miles down Slab Creek Road you’ll find
The Neskowin Golf Course has been a favorite for golfers since the 1930’s and the view from the seventh tee is spectacular. The course features nine holes covering 2,591 yards with a par of 35. Horseback riding, a climb up Proposal Rock from the beach and the Fourth of July celebrations are all fun attractions for visitors.

here are only a few communities T on the Oregon coast that aren’t located on Highway 101. Pacific City, on the “Three Capes Scenic Loop,” is the largest. Highway 101 is three miles inland at this point. Cape Kiwanda, at Pacific City, is the southernmost of the Three Capes. It’s named after an Indian chief. Here, the Nestucca and Little Nestucca Rivers empty separately into Nestucca Bay. Haystack Rock, the largest of three almost-identical monoliths along the Oregon coast, and the third largest monolith in the world. is about a mile offshore. It is supposedly possible to see Chief Kiawanda’s face in the rock when the light is right.
If Pacific City were actually an incorporated city – it’s not – it would be the third-largest city in Tillamook County. An estimated 1,200 people live here. Originally called Ocean Park, the town was platted in 1883 – and promptly moved to higher ground after a flood. The older community of Woods, across the river, was originally the commercial center (reached by ferry and later by a footbridge), but was outstripped
by Pacific City. Today, all the commercial activity is in Pacific City, while Woods is a quiet residential community with tame deer roaming the streets. Pacific City has a branch of the county library, a post office, numerous churches, and a mediumsized supermarket. There’s also a hardware store, medical center, with a dentist and fitness center as well, gas station and deli-mart, many motels, campgrounds and RV parks, restaurants, a bakery, galleries, a community center with weekly Bingo games, a brewpub on the beach, a wine shop bar, real estate agencies and many shops. The 1,875-foot long Pacific City State Airport, built in 1950, is the only public airport south of Tillamook.

South of town is a large portion of the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, a favorite with birders and hikers.
