‘Challenge of the Champions’ brings new look to Redwood Coast Rodeo The 2019 Redwood Coast Rodeo will have a different, more exciting look to it when it bucks into the Del Norte County Fair Saturday, Aug. 3. “Challenge of the Champions Bulls and Barrels” will feature top cowboys and cowgirls competing in the Tri-Counties Bank Arena beginning at 4 p.m. In the past years, the rodeo found itself trying to compete for high-caliber rodeo athletes and animal stock against bigger rodeos on the West Coast. The new format features just professional bull riders who complete in a seasonlong competition. Currently in first place is Jake Davis, whose career average score is a remarkable 75 points. At least 25 bull rides will be attempted this year, far higher than have been seen in the past. “We contacted other rodeos who have used “Challenge of the Champions,” said Kim Floyd, CEO of the Del Norte Fair. “They were thrilled with the product.” The public will also have an opportunity to meet the cowboys before the show, something that rarely happens at traditional rodeos.
Along with bull riding, barrel racing will be part of the rodeo action. Preliminary racing will begin at 11 a.m., with the top six in each division advancing to the prime-time show. Entries from Del Norte and Curry counties will highlight the event. The always popular mutton busting will be offered as well, as young people will get the opportunity to ride sheep. Also on the agenda will be the calf scramble, where youngsters win prizes if they are able to grab a ribbon from one of the many calves turned loose on the arena floor. “It’s literally fun for all ages,” Floyd said. The day’s activities conclude with the afterrodeo dance in the beer garden from 7 to 10 p.m. Camryn Ciara Ridgley and her band will perform. Ridgley grew up in Del Norte County, and now lives in Nashville where she is pursuing a country music career. Ridgley will also be the opening act Friday night for Mark McGrath, the lead singer of the popular group Sugar Ray. That show starts at 6 p.m. in the front of the Tri-Counties Bank Arena grandstand.

Lead singer of Sugar Ray to tops entertainment ing a unique sound that is part pop, part alternative, and part hard rock, with some soul and rap in the mix as well. Sugar Ray’s first album was released in 1995 and quickly established the group as a force in popular music. What added to the group’s popularity was McGrath’s fun nature, which has made him and the group such a popular attraction when touring throughout the world. Along with his music career, McGrath has established himself as a television personality, serving as host on numerous music shows on MTV and VH1, as well as “Killer Karaoke.� He was also a three-time champion on VH1’s “Rock and Roll Jeopardy.� Music has again been
his focus of late, as Sugar Ray has joined forces again for a new album, “Little Yachty� expected to be released during this tour. Opening for McGrath is a singer and performer well known to Del Norte County residents – Camryn Ciara Ridgley and her band will step into the spotlight Friday night, and then again Saturday for the After Rodeo Dance in the fair’s beer garden. Ridgley is a Del Norte High product who was, among other things, a standout softball pitcher for the Warriors. In 2010, she won the Del Norte County Colgate Country Showdown. Now living in Nashville, she has been performing and recording country-style music and getting strong encourage-
ment from numerous established stars. A day before McGrath and Ridgely perform, the Del Norte County Fair will present an artist many feel is on the verge of breaking big – Coffey Anderson will perform on the main stage Friday starting at 6 p.m. A country and Gospel singer, Anderson has been finding more and more fans via his You Tube productions. The Texan also found an audience thanks to his performance on “Nashville Star.� According to Itunes, Anderson’s music has been downloaded more than a half-million times. Another musical highlight will be on Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as local singer/performer Stephanie La Torre will join her band The Reverbs to be part of the 11th annual Coast Central Credit Union Car Show next to the amphitheater stage. All shows are free with Del Norte Fair admission.

The Del Norte County Fair has a long history of bringing well known entertainers to Crescent City. Over the years, country music legends such as Jerry Reed, John Conley, Aaron Tippin, Sammy Kershaw, and John Michael Montgomery have performed. Last year, the fair went in a slightly different direction, as rock-pop star Uncle Kracker played to a sold-out show on the stage in front of the TriCounties Bank grandstand. This year’s star performer may be one of the most noteworthy yet. Mark McGrath, lead singer of the popular group Sugar Ray, will highlight the day’s events starting at 6 p.m. Friday. Fair Sunday, when the annual Tuff Trucks and Demolition Derby begins at 2 p.m. in the Tri-Counties Bank Arena. Entry is free with paid fair admission. The demo derby has been a staple of the Del Norte Fair for years, and a full
house is expected again for this year’s event. Two vehicle divisions are offered: Compact and large. Heats will be conducted, and those vehicles and drivers that advance to the finals will be competing for a first-place check of $1,000
in each category, $500 for second, $300 for third. While safety is the top priority, demo derby organizers are insisting that drivers be aggressive. Cars judged to be “sandbagging� -- hanging back and not initiating contact -- will be dis-
qualified. The “Tuff Truck� event is open to all vehicles, especially pickups, Jeeps, sand buggies, and four-wheel drive rigs. The object is to be the fastest down the Tuff Truck course, going over
and through obstacles, mud bogs, and other challenges. This year’s winner will take home $500. New safety measures have been installed around the arena, with volunteers stepping up to install new railing.

Sounds, smells, sunshine, oh my A
county fair is filled with flashing lights, a cacophony of sounds, and people moving rapidly from one location to another seemingly in every direction possible. For some -- especially special needs children -- all that light, sound and movement is just too much. This year, the Del Norte County Fair is offering a place for people to go when their senses are overloaded. What was a dusty, almost-forgotten paint closet is now the Del Norte Fairgrounds Sensory Room, offering visitors a supervised escape from the hustle and bustle of fair time and other fairgrounds’ activities. Kim Floyd, the fair’s CEO, was introduced to the idea at the Golden One Center in Sacramento. She shared the idea with her staff,who agreed that some children and even the rare adult at times need a quiet place. Floyd turned the job over to Whitney Floyd, giving her a budget and a place to make it happen -- a room inside the Commercial Exhibits Building, aka, the “ten-
nis building.” The room was cleaned, painted, and outfitted with a range of items designed to help those youngsters feeling overwhelmed. First Five and the Family Resource Center proved to be very supportive of the project, as well as Coastal Connections and the Glen Haven Adult Day Program. “Whitney had a lightbulb moment,” Floyd said. “She did a lot of research.” The result was a room that came in under budget, and is actually a little bigger than the one in Sacramento that inspired the Del Norte County Fairgrounds version. Special needs instructors will be manning the room during the fair from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Floyd emphasized the room is not a babysitting service. Parents must stay with children at the site. Another aspect of the project is the creation of “sensory bags” that parents can borrow. Inside each bag are items to help young people
cope with all the sensory input, but still enjoy the fair. These items include headphones, a fidget-spinner, a squishy ball, and emotion cards that allow youngsters to explain their feelings. The bags can be checked out at the fairgrounds’ main office. Parents will need to leave behind their driver’s license.

Gone are the concession booths previously located behind the arena grandstands. Fair officials made the decision to remove the wooden structure after an examination of all options. “It wasn’t fiscally prudent to make the necessary repairs and to bring the facility up to code,” said Kim Floyd, the fair’s chief executive officer. “Especially considering the building was being used just four days of the year.” The challenge was to find a way that would allow concessionaires to sell their products during the fair, but would allow the space to be used the rest of the year. The answer: Hook-up sites like those used in R.V. parks. Providing power and water, the pedestals allow more vendors to serve food during the fair using their own trucks and trailers. The area will also be available for other events and uses.

Try goat yoga at the fair
What in the world is “goat yoga” and why is it coming to the Del Norte County Fair in 2019? A search of You Tube finds numerous videos of people practicing yoga along side -- and often with -- baby goats, which are, of course, about the cutest creatures on Earth. Del Norte County Fair CEO Kim Floyd saw goat yoga and was amazed by how much the participants -- both two legged and four legged -- enjoyed the session, and thus, brought it to this year’s Del Norte County event. When an individual is in certain positions (such as a plank) a baby goat’s natural tendency is to step up and onto the back of the person. And since a baby goat weighs about 15 pounds, it is the perfect weight for the exercise. Plus, who wouldn’t want a baby goat on their back? Goat yoga will be offered at noon Saturday in the livestock barn. Participation is free.
