Technology seen as key for students

By Brad Mosher The Herald A series of storms made a big impression on the final day of July when they rolled through and drenched parts of Killdeer and Dunn County in heavy rain and hail.

One of the events impacted by the weather was a outdoor grilling event organized by the American Bank Center branch in Killdeer.

Hello, I don’t often make mistakes.

Well, actually I do.

I’ve been making mistakes for seventy years.

Some grievous, some not so bad.

I made a mistake a week ago.

I figured I was done haying. I’ve been haying for several weeks. I put some hay up too wet.

I put some hay up too dry. In between I baled up a few bales that were probably just right.

I don’t know which ones they were, but I’ll bet the cows eat every bale I feed next winter. They aren’t fussy when it is twenty below and a brisk wind blowing.

I mentioned to a friend one time that I had put up some poor hay.

“Beats the hell of a northwest wind and rabbit tracks,” he responded.

The mistake I made a week ago was with our hay cutter.

I had to run down to Reva and I left the keys in the cutter.

I know. I know.

You shouldn’t leave the keys in stuff.

Shirley knew that I always leave the keys in everything so she went to work.

When I got home from Reva I found that I was not done haying.

She had cut hay for another three hours. I wept.

OMDAHL: ‘Send Her Back’ brings Emma to tears...

By Lloyd Omdahl Congresswoman Ilham Omar, a Somali-American, expressed some partisan criticism and was immediately trashed by a crowd in North Carolina with the chant “Send Her Back”, indicating that she had no right to be in this country.

I was shocked.

So UnAmerican, so unChristian, I thought.

But my initial conclusions were wrong.

While it was still unChristian, it was actually very American.

Once the Germans and Scandinavians got in, we quickly slammed the door on the Irish, Chinese, Italians, Czechs, Bulgarians, all of the other people in southern Europe, and now Mexico, Central America and locations south.

Desperate people, high on hope, choked by fear, all scrambling to escape squalid conditions and gang terror in their home countries. But they find no empathy here.

In this land of professing Jesus followers, we turn to Scripture to see how we should treat these unfortunate souls.

Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave or free man, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ

Jesus.”

Romans 15:7: “Wherefore, accept one another, just as Christ accepted us to the glory of God.” Romans 2:11: “…there

is no partiality with God.” James 2:9: “But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as

transgressors.”

“When you look at the calendar, the days that we are going to be off are the days when we are going to have our project based learning,” Musick said, as she unpacked some of the new technology the students will find waiting for them when school starts again in mid-August.

“So, the kids could still come to school five days,” she explained.

“These are the days we would actually have activities. We would actually have electronics and engineering together,” she said, continuing to unpack the electronic building blocks for the learning projects when school starts.

“Super excited” “We are super excited (about the change to a hybrid schedule). We want the kids to do what we call high-order thinking. We want to expose them to this to help them decide careers that they might be interested in,” she said.

The faculty and district is looking at

the curriculum as a way to prepared the students for future jobs, she explained.

The district has chosen a curriculum available through the state, she said.

The curriculum also goes all the way up to the high school level.

“Each year, it will build (on itself),” she explained. “It starts them at Grade 2.”

The students will be getting all the materials together in the classes and have to find the solutions, according to Musick.

“There may be different solutions so they have to choose a solution.

“Then, they’ll have to build a prototype, go test it and then they have to come back and say if it did or didn’t work,” Musick explained.

“And if it did work, how could we improve it. We are starting at age seven, teaching them this (method) and engineering process.

From the first stage, the students will proceed, going to using microbit technology and then to developing simple robots, the school’s technology teacher explained.

Previously, the school didn’t have the technology, she said. “When I came, I said Oh my gosh, they’ll need this when they

get to seventh grade.”

That way, the students could join the robotics team when they go to Killdeer for the seventh grade.

The technology curriculum is part of STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), the STREAM coordinator explained.

“We try to have days right before the holidays so they are very energetic and we try to something fun,” Musick said.

Already Musick has gotten her students invlved in designing bridges and a classroom project.

One of the plans is for implementing a robotics-based curriculum, according to the superintendent.

“This concept has inspired the fastgrowing maker movement which is a trend for do-it-yourself activities for children that involve learning, building and experimentation,” he said.

“Such a curriculum allows for integrating the teaching and learning of math, science, technology and engineering through robotics,” he added.

gency management officer, the rain had impact in some locations, but not in others.

“I know some people who lived south of Manning along Highway 22 had their gardens hailed out,” Diane Brew said two days after the storm.

“I didn’t hear much about measurements from the rain.”

According to Brew, there were unofficial reports in spots of up to three inches.

One Killdeer weather spotter said that he had a .88-inch total measurement in his location near the school.

The free meal grill by the baseball fields drew a lot of people before it was forced to break up early with the downpour and hail sending people sprinting to their cars and trucks.

“They are pulling right up to the front door here to try to get in,” one of the people helping staff the event from American Bank said, as wind was blowing the rain inside.

The open window on the east side of the building didn’t help to much. “ Nine times out of ten, that window would be perfectly fine. The first time we get a wind that comes out of the

east....,” Klint Sickler added, chuckling.

For American Bank Center branch manager Shari Barnes, the inaugural Grill event was a success, albeit a very wet one.

“It went from a picnic to a splash bash,” she said with a chuckle. “We all did get a little wet that evening.”

“We did try to stick it out, but it (the wet weather) did get the best of us,” she said.

The inaugural Grill event managed to serve about 125 people before the storm hit, Barnes said.

“We were prepared for quite a few more than that, but we only served for about an hour and a half, rather than the full three hours.

“It was nice to start with, but then it turned on us and went into a downpour.”

According Barnes, she had .95 inches in her rain gauge at home after the grill building was cleaned and cleared.

“It should take the fire index down a couple of notches for a couple of weeks,” she added with a smile.

As for the Grill, Barnes said planning is already in the works for the second annual event in 2020.

“It was a kind of a community event to say thank you to all of our customers.”

Killdeer looking to fill local committee vacancies The City of Killdeer is looking for community members interested in the following two committees: The Killdeer Complete Count Committee, which is partnered with the U.S. Census Bureau to develop and implement an awareness campaign for population participation in the 2020 Census.

Training will be provided by U.S. Census Bureau to the Committee members to aid the community with any questions or concerns with responding to the 2020 Census.

The City of Killdeer Visitors’ Committee, which shall serve as an advisory committee to the City Commission in administering the proceeds of lodging

tax available to the City under North Dakota Century Code 40-57.3.

Lodging tax monies can be used to help promote and attract tourism to the City as well as various other improvement items NDCC 40-57.3-02.

Both Committees are vital to the long term success of Killdeer and important pieces to the recently updated Comprehensive Plan.

LOCAL Obituary

Hilda Klatt 1922 -2019 It is with much faith in our hearts and sadness in our lives that we journeyed with our mother, Hilda Pauline (Lorenz) Klatt on the afternoon of Sunday, August 4, 2019 as she passed to her eternal home.

Hilda’s funeral service will be 10 a.m., Monday, August 12, 2019

at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Rev. Lisa Lewton officiating.

Interment will follow at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, north of Dunn Center.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Hilda was born on December 18, 1922 in rural Dodge; (the 11th of 19 children) to John and Margaret (Bitterman) Lorenz.

Later they relocated to a farm between Watauga and McIntosh, S.D. where she attended school in Corson Co., S.D. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Evangelical Church in Watauga, S.D. in 1937.

Her family returned to N.D. in 1938 living on a farm east of Golden Valley.

Hilda was united in marriage to Henry Klatt on October 14, 1940 in Sidney, Mont.

They made their home on the family homestead N.W. of Dunn Center for the next 52 years.

In 1992, she and Henry retired from farming and moved into Killdeer. Henry died in November 2008.

In November 2010, Hilda moved to Villard Terrace in Dickinson.

St. Benedict’s Health Center has been her home since July 2014.

Hilda was a member of St. John Lutheran Church (Killdeer and Dickinson).

She enjoyed quilting and crocheting and was a member of WELCA. She belonged to the Killdeer Senior Citizen’s Club.

She also loved playing cards and bowling.

Grateful to have shared her life were her five daughters: Peggy, Frances, Evelyn, Ella and Kathrein; and one son, Gary.

Hilda was blessed with 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and eight great-greatgrandchildren.

She is survived by two sisters: Violet (Gilbert) Ost, Beulah and Sandy (Ellis) Sabin, Scio, Ore. The family would like to thank all of the caregivers and staff at St. Benedict’s Health Center for taking very good care of their mother and grandmother over the last five years.

BLM volunteer dies at Schnell Rec Area A volunteer for the Bureau of Land Management North Dakota Field Office was found deceased Sunday at the Schnell Recreation Area near Richardton.

The Stark County Sheriff ’s Department is investigating the unattended death, but the preliminary findings are consistent with a lightning strike.

Kyle Brierley, 33, of Dickinson, was a volunteer for the BLM, mowing trails on public

lands at the Schnell Recreation Area and on the Little Missouri National Grasslands. Brierley was dedicated to his family and well-known in the local mountain biking community.

This was his first summer volunteering with the BLM. “Our heart-felt condolences go out to the family and friends during this difficult time,” said BLM Montana/Dakotas State Director John Mehlhoff.

Hoeven, Carson visit housing projects Senator John Hoeven brought U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson to Grand Forks and the Spirit Lake Reservation to see local housing projects and give the region’s officials and service providers the opportunity to provide direct input on HUD’s programs as well as to discuss local needs and opportunities to make more effective use of federal funding.

During the visit, Hoeven highlighted innovative efforts in the state that he has helped advance to provide comprehensive support to families and individuals at-risk of, or working to escape, homelessness. This includes: · The LaGrave on First project in Grand Forks. · Tribes’ work at Spirit Lake and Turtle Mountain to combat homelessness among veterans using the Tribal

HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. · Programs to benefit affordable housing efforts across the state, for which Hoeven is working to ensure strong support as a member of the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Committee.

“As people work to secure permanent housing, they can face a myriad of challenges, including a shortage of affordable homes, and in some instances, accessing behavioral health treatment and furthering their education,” said Hoeven. “That’s why efforts like LaGrave on First and HUD-VASH are so important, because in addition to providing a safe place to live, they help individuals access the services they need to achieve long-term success. Secretary Carson’s visit gives him the opportunity to

see the good work our local housing authorities are doing with the support of federal programs, and we appreciate his willingness to hear from our service providers firsthand.”

REGIONAL California Dreamin’ Students on the Killdeer band and choir got a break from a North Dakota summer in June when they traveled to Northern California.

But it was much more than that.

According to school music director Abby Oase, the group performed at the Six Flags amusement park in nearby Vallejo, and visited the John Muir Woods in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

During their stay, the Killdeer students also visited Chinatown and the former prison known as Alcatraz on an island in San Francisco Bay. While there, the students also watched a performance of the Broadway show “Hamilton.”

“They (the students) were amazed by the magic of the Broadway show,” she said. “The students became closer as friends and as a music family (during the trip),” she added.

According to the music director, the band, choir members wanted to join in thanking the businesses which sponsored the trip to California.

The businesses sposoring the trip were: Benz Oil Company, Bosch Lumber, Dunn County Fair Board Association, Hilltop Home of Comfort, Heinrichs Supervalu, Lariat Liquors, Nana Lil’s and Superheaters.

Oase said that she wanted to also thank the school for its support and the adult leaders on the trip and who helped to return the students safe and sound.

A semi tractor pulling an enclosed trailer was traveling east bound on Interstate 94 east of New Salem.

The semi experienced a mechanical failure to the air system on the truck causing the truck’s brakes to engage.

The semi and trailer skidded on the roadway crossing both lanes of travel and into the median.

written by Merry Helm August 5, 2019 — In 1816, Congress passed a law that stated, “Licenses to trade with the Indians within the territorial limits of the United States shall not be granted to any but citizens of the United States unless by express direction of the President.”

The law didn’t apply to the traders in the north and eastern sections of what is now North Dakota, because at that time, it belonged to Great Britain. Two years later, however, England signed a treaty with the United States that determined that all land south of the 49th parallel would now be American property. The question was... what, exactly, now belonged to the states?

The government put up a quarter of a million dollars for what was called the Yellowstone Expedition, which was planned out by Secretary of War John Calhoun. His stated purpose was “to extend and protect our trade with the Indians.” They would also be finding the 49th parallel and trying out a steamboat route that could provide “safe and easy communication to China.”

Colonel Henry Atkinson was put in charge of 800 to 1,000 soldiers accompanying the expedition, and Major Stephen H. Long headed the scientific corps. It was the first time steamboats were used on the Missouri River, and it turned out to be a mistake;

The interstate was shut down from mile marker 127 to 134 for about two hours until the semi could be removed from the scene.

No injuries were reported from the crash.

navigating steamers up the Big Muddy was far more difficult than using keelboats. Of the five steamboats they used, only one – the Western Engineer – was designed for shallow water, and they didn’t launch from St. Louis until June 21, 1819, after the spring runoff was gone and the river was low.

Only three of the steamers successfully maneuvered upriver. Even the Western Engineer labored to reach a top speed of three miles an hour, and sandbars were a constant problem. Enormous amounts of wood were needed for fuel, and the river’s muddy water clogged the boilers. It was said, “A man can grow corn in his stomach if he drinks Missouri water.”

The expedition made it only as far as Council Bluffs, where they had to stop and prepare for winter. The government severely cut appropriations, and the expedition was ultimately considered a failure. Major Long went back east, calling the plains “The Great American Desert.”

Four years later, however, Major Long headed north again to find the 49th parallel. This time he came by way of the Minnesota River Valley with a small infantry escort. The expedition was treated to a dog feast by the Wahpeton Dakotas, but further north, a different band was not as welcoming.

Long had to push his men with forced marches that covered almost 25 miles a day.

It was on this date in 1823 that Long and his men reached

Pembina. The village was a thriving fur-trading post at that time, but the men found it nearly deserted. James Calhoun, who had planned the earlier expedition, charted the stars that night, determined the 49th parallel, and erected an oak post with G.B. engraved on the north side and U.S. on the south side.

Pembina, which everybody assumed might still be British, was instead in the United States.

The following day, the townspeople returned with 115 Red River carts, each loaded with about 800 pounds of buffalo meat and hides. When Long informed them they weren’t British any longer, they were somewhat unimpressed. The Hudson’s Bay Company had conducted its own survey earlier in the year and came to the same conclusion. Pembina citizens wanting to remain British had already left town, and Me’tis families had moved in to take their place.

William Jennings Bryan’s Lot written by Merry Helm August 6, 2019 — Back in 1914, on this date, Bismarck learned some interesting news. G. J. Koenan, Bismarck’s register of deeds, received a letter from James Emmons, his counterpart in Pawnee, OK. Emmons was trying to clear up a deed transfer on a Bismarck lot owned by one William Jennings Bryan, the famous orator who was then

President Wilson’s Secretary of State. The lot was at the corner of Washington Avenue and “the Capitol boulevard” and was the first property Bryan ever owned.

A story in the Tribune stated, “One cannot help wondering how close the illustrious William Jennings Bryan came to being a citizen of Bismarck and a participant in the political battles of the county and state.”

The Inskter Missile written by Merry Helm August 7, 2019 — On this date in 1965, the first Minuteman Missile in North Dakota was installed in its launch facility near Inkster, in the northeastern part of the state.

The first Minutemen were kept on alert in unmanned underground silos approximately 80 feet deep and 12 feet wide.

Covering these missile tubes were 100-ton blast doors that had to be blown off before the missile could be launched. Environmental control equipment and standby power sources were buried nearby in support buildings, and electronic surveillance was used to detect intruders.

For every cluster of ten missiles, Missile Combat Crews staffed a centrally located launch control center. These control centers were from 40 to 100 feet below ground level and placed at least 14 miles away from neighboring centers. A nearby, above-ground, missile alert facility provided living quarters and support equipment for the site’s crew, which consisted of a manager, security

Dustin Hoffman, Director written by Merry Hel August 8, 2019 — The Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre staged its first production, “My Sister Aileen,” in 1946, and until getting permanent facilities in 1967, they staged their shows wherever they could. In 1963, an east coast actor was hired to direct two of their plays, at least one of which was produced in the Red River Playhouse.

In 2002, when he was interviewed by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune at the Toronto Film Festival, he realized the paper’s proximity to North Dakota. “Can I tell you a story?” he asked the reporter. “I was a young, unemployed actor living in New York City. This was back in the ‘50s. Couldn’t get a job, even waiting tables. I went up to the Equity office – you know, the [stage actors’] union office – to see if there was anything.

And one week there was. There was a note saying that the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theater (sic) needed an artistic director. I applied, and I got the job. You know Fargo? I love it.”

He was Dustin Hoffman, who four years later performed his break-out role in the hit movie, “The Graduate.” Today is his birthday.

New coach grabs Cowboys’ reins

There will be somebody new on the sidelines this season guiding the Killdeer Cowboys in their quest for a regional playoff berth in 2019.

It will still be a familiar face when the football players start official practice Aug. 12.

Andrew Cook has already been going through the morattorium restrictions with his new team.

“It started on the first (Aug. 1). They could come in and lift... and we could supervise. They can run on their own, but we can’t do anything else with them,” he said recently.

“It (the moratorium) won’t be that much different than the rest of the summer,” he added.

The school had an open weight room with workouts posted on the wall for the players who wanted to prepare as much as possible for the new season, accordin to Cook, who also is the elementary

principal at the school.

With school yet to start and official practices still in the future, the new coach said that the new team will be a young team.

“We have only three seniors right now.

There are some who say they are going to play, but I won’t count them until I see the whites of their eyes,” the coach said.

“It could be more... or it could just be those three guys that we have.”

So far, depth may be a problem for the 2019 Cowboys, he said. “We are not very deep, so injuries could really hurt us.

“We will have a lot of sophomores who will be playing. Our sophomore class has a lot of kids who are pretty committed to the program.

“We will be young and inexperienced, but at our leadership positions, we have guys that have been there for a while,” the coach said.

He has several players wanting to take over at quarterback for Dylan Tabor, who graduated.

But he currently sees only one player

stepping right in. “Zach Anderson. He is going to only play quarterback, but we run a spread offense. So we will run him,” the coach said. “He will have more than enough chances to run.”

In the 2018 season, Anderson was part of a potent ground attack for the Cowboys.

Line looks strong The offensive line is looking pretty good going into the season, Cook said.

“We had two kids move in from Utah that have both shown they are good players. They are committed to the program. Dylan and Colby Asay will be a big part of it (the line).” Dylan is a senior and Colby is a sophomore.

They are not the only transfer to help out the Cowboys.

“We also had a kid move in who was all-region last year at Heart River. Ethan Jepson wrestled for us last year and was on the track team,” the coach added.

“He will play guard for us. Jepson is a sophomore.”

New England ready to glow with 5K runners Saturday evening

The black light will glow in New England during Saturday’s 5K run.

New England will be literally glowing Saturday evening as part of the annual Edward Schwartz Memorial Glow Run 5K. Unlike most 5-kilometer races, the event will be held in the evening starting by the lumberyard behind Hank’s Place off Eighth Street.

The race will will be free to participants who can run, walk, or jog the course around the community, starting after 8 p.m. The course will include black light glow tunnels, an arch tunnel, color splash stations, as well as adult beverage station.

For those participants wanting the adult beverages, they will need

to purchase a wristband for $10, which will pay for all-you-candrink keg beer during the evening.

There will be booths downtown for community groups where people can help the groups with fundraising. All of the proceeds with each booth will go to the groups, according to organizers.

The event will actually start at 4 p.m. with obstacle courses, a waterslide, and a dunk tank, along with snow cones, cotton candy, sodas and other beverages available.

At 5 p.m., there will be Mulligans & Grills Gone Wild, along with a Black Light and Color Powder

Booth, Color Blasters and Black Light Route, and a Glow Run apparel booth. There will also be a Glow hair, face paiting and nails booth. In addition, there will be a 50/50 raffle and a booth to purchase some of the Glow items.

At 6 p.m., there will be a pre-race party and a black light photo booth.

At 8:30 p.m. approximately, the “party” will be starting and after the race (from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.) the black light party will be continuing with entertainment.

The race costs are being covered by the sponsors, according to the organizers.

rail disaster in North Dakota history happened at 7:20 p.m. on this date in 1945 at Michigan, about 50 miles west of Grand Forks. The first section of a Great Northern passenger train had to make an emergency stop, and the engine of section two plowed into it from behind.

The two Empire Builders were traveling to the west coast as a pair. The first section contained the Pullman sleeper cars, with 237 aboard, and the second section carried between 600 and 700 in coach cars. A new crew came on at Fargo that afternoon, with section one leaving at 3:25 and section two pulling out about 10 minutes later.

Passengers were almost all military men and women – World War II was winding down and would, in fact, officially end within the week.

The only eyewitness that evening was Annette Desautels, who had just gotten off work at the Red Owl. “...when I got to the Great Northern tracks,” she said, “I...wondered why the train had stopped there, since the Empire Builder never makes a stop at Michigan... I could hear the shrill whistle of a second train coming... then I saw a railroad man with a red flag drop off the rear platform... run back down the track a ways, then frantically attempt to flag the oncoming train.”

There was no time for the second train to stop.

The second engine plunged into the rear car of section one, sending it skyward and splitting it down the middle. The fated Pullman, named Peoria, was a “bobtail” – part observation car and part sleeping berths. One serviceman saw the second train coming and jumped out a window. The remaining 34 were either killed instantly or overcome by steam escaping from the engine below.

Roughly two-thirds were military; the rest were primarily women, with several small children. Only one person was found alive. Mrs. George Bannan, 45, was trapped at the waist with her head caught outside a window. She had been on her way to Velva to attend her father’s funeral.

REGIONAL Within minutes, the people of Michigan (population 500) began rescue efforts. Three welders, one from Tolna and two from Michigan, went for their equipment, ladders were brought, and the job of cutting through the steel and rubble began. As dark came on, people lined up their cars and aimed their headlights on the train until alternative lighting could be rigged.

People provided coffee and food, and others provided space and typewriters to reporters.

Military personnel on board did a great deal to help the train crew and rescue workers, as well as caring for the injured. Over the ensuing hours and days, one sailor helped the local telegraph company send messages to Fargo, to St. Paul and to hundreds of relatives around the nation.

A 20-year-old porter from St. Paul was named several times for his heroic attempts to save Mrs. Bannon. He was supporting her head while a priest performed last rites.

After more than six hours, she was finally freed, but she died in the ambulance 15 minutes later.

The first engine had developed a “hot box” – a wheel bearing that was burning out. W ith smoke billowing from the tender, there was no choice; the train had to be stopped. In fact, it stopped three times – twice in and near Petersburg, where signals were left to warn the second train.

The following engineer slowed for a number of miles but then resumed to 55. When he came upon the stalled train in Michigan, the engineer hit the emergency brakes and turned off all power, but he was only able to slow to 30 mph before impact. Amazingly, the crew survived.

False Peace Flash written by Merry Helm August 12, 2019 — On this date in 1945, the nation learned that World War II was over. It was at 9:34 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, that a news flash came from the United Press in New York saying that V-J Day had arrived.

Carrying a Washington dateline, the flash was first fed into the UP’s southern

wire service and stated that the Japanese had accepted the Allies’ terms of surrender.

A Fargo Forum article stated that people who were out for Sunday evening strolls “stopped beside parked cars from whose open windows they could catch the radio bulletins.

Persons began streaming into the streets,” the article read, “calling to one another, ‘Hey, the war’s over.’

“A woman hurried along the street, her face wreathed in smiles, tears brimming in her eyes,” the article went on.

“Automobile horns blared.

Confetti dropped into the street in front of the Fargoan hotel, tossed there by a boy on the roof. A tiny paper parachute floated down from the same roof. Strangers smiled at one another, unable to keep outward expression of the joy in their hearts to themselves.”

Reporter Joyce Lang went on to describe her own experience of what happened next. “... I was on north Broadway, opposite the Holzer confectionery. I turned around and walked to The Fargo Forum office. By the time I had gone halfway, I knew the report was unofficial without hearing the radio bulletins from cars along the curb. People’s expressions had changed.”

It turned out that the story was false.

Lang said the telephones at the Forum rang off the hook, and paperboys wanted to know when the “extra” would roll. But, then things quieted, and people once again took up their vigil of waiting for peace.

Two minutes after the news flash went out, the UP figured out it had NOT originated at their Washington bureau, and they immediately killed the story. Within a half hour, White House secretary Charles Ross issued a report, saying, “President Truman went to bed about an hour ago. If anything comes in, he’ll be notified.

There is absolutely no word of truth in the report that the president has announced that Japan has accepted the Allied surrender terms.”

The United Press immediately reported the case to the FBI, and UP President Hugh Baillie offered a $5,000 reward for the identification and conviction of the person who fed the flash into the

wire service.

The FCC also wanted to know what happened, and American Telephone and Telegraph – or AT&T – started its own investigation into how the story got released.

There were 12 points along the telegraph poles where stories were regularly fed to the UP wires, and the flash could have been fed from any one of them.

The UP report also went on to describe the possibility of early-day hacking when it reported, “... it would be possible for a person with sufficient mechanical knowledge to hook another teletype on the UP wires and send a few words which would appear to come from a regular bureau point.”

The world would have to wait three more days for the official announcement of peace. The UP story on that day read, in part, “From New York to San Francisco, the people hailed the end of three years, eight months and seven days of struggle against a savage Asiatic foe.

They celebrated as their feelings dictated, in simple prayer and in wild hilarity.”

William Lemke, Prairie Rebel August 13, 2019 — Today is the birthday of William Lemke, who was born to German parents in Minnesota in 1878.

As one of nine children, Lemke’s boyhood was spent in the Big Coulee area of Towner County.

His aggressive father had already acquired 2,700 acres when he died of a stroke when he was outbid on a piece of land he wanted.

William lost an eye in a childhood accident and was described as shy but eager for knowledge. His big jaw, rough skin, and rumpled clothing gave him a tough exterior. This, coupled with fierce determination, led historian Edward Blackorby to label him a “prairie rebel.”

Lemke went to UND, where he was seen as an ambitious student and skilled debater. Although he was only 5’ 8” and 149 pounds, he also gained respect on the football field. He was a member of the Varsity Bachelor Club, whose members were to save each other from feminine wiles. It was in this group that he met many future leaders, including his

sion, he co-sponsored the Fraizer-Lemke Act, which would have helped North Dakota farmers refinance their mortgages to save their farms. Lemke had been instrumental in getting FDR elected, but Roosevelt now refused to support Lemke, and the bill sank. Disillusioned by Roosevelt’s “New Deal” – as many were – Lemke accepted the Union of Social Justice Party’s nomination for president – the only North Dakotan who’s ever run for the office.

He lost but received almost 900,000 votes. In the same election, he was re-elected to Congress in which he served – except for one term – until his death in 1950.

Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher August 14, 2019 — Birders from around the state flocked to see a ScissorTailed Flycatcher following a recent sighting near Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge north of Jamestown, perched on utility wires and on windrows in a newly cut alfalfa field. Jamestown attorney and bird enthusiast, Daniel Buchanan, described it as “nearly unmistakable with its long forked tail and salmon-pink belly.”

Scissortails are up to 15” long, almost two-thirds of which is tail, and are very rarely seen this far north. Of his state bird, photographer Bill Horn writes, “Soon after the birds arrive (here in Okalahoma), the males begin their famous ‘sky dance’...

After climbing about 100’ in the air, the male makes a series of V-shaped flights, then plunges down in an erratic zigzag course often somersaulting while uttering a rolling, cackling call.

The performance has been described as ‘an aerial ballet of incomparable grace’...During flight, the bird opens its tail like a pair of scissors and folds or closes the ‘scissors’ when perching. The principal threat to scissortails is poaching,” writes Horn. “A great number of birds have been killed by poachers who wanted only the bird’s tail.”

Lemke watched farmers fall deeper and deeper into debt as banks, railroads and grain terminals grew fat with profits. Historian Elwyn Robinson wrote that Lemke “became an intense, bitter, tenacious fighter for the plain people against the hated interests; he was a natural extremist... Versatile and emphatic in speech, the language of the threshing crews as well as that of the courtroom came naturally to him. He neither smoked nor drank,” Robinson continued. “When the occasion demanded, he could drive himself unsparingly with a terrible concentration. He was brilliant, a good organizer, ambitious and aggressive, eager for power, a natural promoter and dreamer, an ultra-nationalist... Until America became involved in the First World War, his friends called him ‘the Dutchman.’”

After graduating from UND in 1903, Lemke studied law at Georgetown and Yale, and then practiced in Fargo.

He soon gained a reputation as a friend to farmers and was very drawn to the solidarity of the rebellious Nonpartisan League, which had roots in the Socialist Party. The League had 26,000 members in 1916, when Lemke became a salaried employee. He was very soon on the executive committee. Robinson wrote, “The League became a religion to Lemke.”

One factor that drove many North Dakotans to join the NPL was the state’s perceived “colonial” status – farmers saw themselves supplying the nation with food but getting nothing in return.

As World War I entered the picture, many North Dakotans saw it as just another advancement of corporate interests at their expense and vigorously opposed joining the overseas conflict.

The NPL gained an important edge in state politics in 1916, including the election of Lemke’s old friend, Lynn Frazier, as governor. Frazier, a relative unknown, often turned to Lemke for counsel, and Lemke wielded tremendous political influence.

The state made important strides toward protecting its own interests until the party ultimately failed in 1921.

Lemke went on to serve in U.S. Congress in 1932, where he continued to champion the causes of family farmers.

Legislative Update: Hello everyone, I’ve had a busy summer of electrical work, and my family and I enjoyed a trip to Illinois where I saw some family as well as the graves of my third greatgrandparents for the first time.

I hope summer has treated you well.

I have been assigned to three interim committees: Taxation, Government Finance, and the Legislative Audit and Fiscal Review Committee (LAFRC).

Each committee will meet at least quarterly and then submit a report at the meetings of Leg-

islative Management in November 2020.

Bills may also be drafted by the committees for the next session.
