Dunn County preps for big fair weekend

Staff Report The annual Dunn County Fair will be starting Aug. 30 with exhibits, pies and a fish fry, but it may be a pigskin which gets the most local attention. Killdeer will be hosting former rival Hazen in the team’s home opener, starting at 6 p.m.. in the Killdeer Sports Complex. On Saturday (Aug. 31), the fair will still have all day displays of machinery, livestock, car show, but the early birds may be on the run when the 5-kilometer run/walk kicks off at 8 a.m. There will also be a girls varsity volleyball tournament at the Killdeer gymnasium all day. For those staying close to the High Plains Community Center, there will be a clown, a petting zoo and a chance to guess the weight and height of a steer all starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. There will also be a softball tournament starting at 10 a.m. at the nearby baseball diamond complex just east of the city. There will also be an opportunity to dunk a deputy when the Sheriffs Office has a dunk tank running from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a free lunch sponsored by the local oil companies. At 5 p.m., there will be a free community supper, sponsored by the County Commission. At 6 p.m., there will be the Badlands Iron Cowboy Rodeo, followed at 8 p.m. by a free concert and dance (indoors) with Josh Kehr performing. In addition to machinery displays all day, there will be a cowboy church at 10 a.m., followed by a Mud Volleyball tournament from 10 a.m. until about 6 p.m. There will be a Brunch at 11 a.m. with a $10 charge for adults and $5 for kids. At 1 p.m., there will be a group of native dancers performing, before the action switches to the Wild Rides Rodeo in the rodeo arena. The final fair event will be a golf scramble tournament starting Sept. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Medicine Hole Golf Course north of Killdeer.
