Lundberg takes over school district reins

Larry Lunberg was just re-elected.

Again.

His latest election win wasn’t on the ballot.

He was unanimously picked as the new school board president July 17 in the district board room next to the district offices.

For Lundberg, it was a step up from his previous post as vice-president.

Levi Bang was picked as the vice-president moments later.

Although Killdeer School District is close to finalizing a location for a new campus and will soon be sending out a survey to the public over the proposed new construction meant to handle the school’s extreme growth.

That is just a little too much when it comes to holding an outdoor “Movies in the Park” night in Dunn Center July 17.

It was weather that turned the outdoor setting into a church basement when everything from the movie “Planet 51” to all the snacks and the equipment were quickly set up in the Normanna Lutheran Church basement.

Consolidated set up the Movies in the Park” and public relations manager Rhonda Fitterer made the decision to go indoors and show the animated movie on a sheet.

It was trivia time (above) before the movie “Planet 51” started to play in a church basement July 17, with Consolidated’s Rhonda Fitterer testing knowledge about the animated movie.

Hello, You know I don’t fly a lot. I used to. Once in awhile to a legislative deal, or on an annual vacation. But I don’t really get excited about amassing airline miles on my credit card. Because when you get a lot of miles, you are tempted to use them on an airline ticket.

But a week ago, I went. I saw.

I conquered. Never mind, different story. A week ago, I had the opportunity to spend five days fishing with three of my grandsons and one of their cousins in Alaska. I couldn’t pass this opportunity up.

To get to Alaska, unless you have an awful lot of time, you need to fly. That entails going through airports. You know, spend $15 on a burger, $8 on a beer, jostle shoulder to shoulder with thousands of people, and try to keep your sanity.

The flight from Bismarck to Minneapolis went fine.

Except planes aren’t built for a 260 pound man with a bruised tailbone. But I kept thinking, Lewis and Clark had it worse.

Maybe.

In Minneapolis a thunderstorm kept us grounded a couple hours. No big deal. Right. We missed our flight from Seattle

DEAN MEYERS to Juneau. Overnight in Seattle, which wasn’t real bad. Except we will miss our ride out of Juneau to the fishing lodge. Now it is getting to be a big deal.

In the morning we get to the Alaska Airline counter at 4:30.

Flight to leave shortly after six.

No problem.

Oh, there is a problem.

They have tickets for four boys aging from six to thirteen, but no tickets for four adults.

You know we can’t send four boys to Alaska fishing without a little assistance.

So we stand there for two

hours watching this guy type.

That’s what he did.

He typed. Fast. For two hours.

Occasionally saying there is nothing he could do.

“Call Delta”. “I don’t have their number”. “Google it you idiot”.

We would walk down to the Delta desk.

They would reassure us, “Everything is fine. You are ticketed on Alaska.”

At Alaska. “Four children. No adults. There is nothing we can do.”

The plane takes off. Without us. Our fishing trip has hit a snag.

After over two hours of watching Idiot type, he agrees that we can buy four more tickets on the next flight.

Which I am sure we could have done on the flight we had already missed.

We gladly bought tickets. Or my nephew did.

He’s such a nice man.

And we did make it, only missing a day of fishing.

Next week I will fill you in about the fishing a bit more.

Right now I hear a hay field calling my name.

OMDAHL: A governor may be most difficult office...

By Lloyd Omdahl Speculation on the 2020 gubernatorial race has already begun and, for the incumbent, it looks more like a walk.

There is no use in making a charade out of the whole thing so let’s put the political circles at ease by making an iron-clad prognostication: Governor Doug Burgum will be the Republican candidate but the sacrificial Democrat has yet to be found.

First of all, I am amazed that Burgum survived this first term let alone look for a second. This guy is a mover and a shaker and North Dakota state government doesn’t move or shake. Trying to govern is as frustrating as teaching memory Bible verses in a retirement home.

When I was working on the Fifth edition of State and Local Government in America, I came to the chapter on the executive and wondered how to best describe the job of governor. At the time (1987) I declared the office of governor to be the most difficult of any office in the American governmental system.

Presidents go golfing; members of Congress are beyond the reach of constituents, and state officials and legislators have no visibility. But the press is constantly at the

governor’s elbow; some elected official is always screwing up; most lieutenant governors are political nuances (except in North Dakota); aggrieved

citizens demand to see the governor personally; and the out-party distorts motives.

In North Dakota, we have committees, com-

missions and boards by the dozen and more elected officials than any other state than South Carolina,

By Frank Turner acrnews@countrymedia.net For farmers, the growing season this summer has been unusually rainy, causing difficulty in the managing and planting of their crops.

As August approaches, National Weather Service meteorologist Ken Simosko said that he expects the downpour trend to continue in southwest North Dakota.

“In August, your region experiences an accumulative 1.04 inches of precipitation for the month,” he said. “Right now the outlook map indicates a slight chance for above average precipitation.”

In addition to extra rain, Simosko said that the outlook also calls for below average temperatures.

So what is the average temperature for the region?

According to National Weather Service data, the average high for the month of August is 82.9 degrees and the average low is 54.2 degrees.

Simosko explained that the above average precipitation and lower temperatures are likely correlated.

More cloud cover and the presence of rain conditions usually leads to cooler days.

“Cooler temperatures and precipitation go hand in hand,” he said.

The meteorologist also attributed the cooler temperature to a northern jet stream.

“For the month of August, it looks like there is a northwesterly jet stream that will push air from the west coast, through Canada, and into the Midwest region,” he said.

It’s also important to note that monthly outlook maps are still limited in what they can tell meteorologists.

When looking at an outlook map, meteorologists cannot tell how much the weather is going to be above or below the average.

Instead, the outlook indicates the percentage chance that conditions will be above or below

average.

“As we look into the month of August, it’s not necessarily a prediction so much as an outlook,” he explained.

As for extreme weather, Simosko said that there is no direct way to tell this early whether the southwest region will continue to experience tornados and hail.

With tornadoes touching down in the region, Simosko said that it’s important to stay informed. Even still, disaster storms and tornadoes are hard to predict.

“Generally speaking, there is no way to know from a monthly outlook whether there are conditions that would favor extreme

weather,” he said.

“Sometimes we don’t know that extreme weather conditions are present until a day before.”

Even though it’s not clear whether August will favor extreme weather condition, the meteorologist said that August is still a time that can have hail and tornado events.

“Usually it’s not until late September that the risk for extreme weather starts to significantly drop.”

For now, remember to keep a rain jacket and umbrella on hand, because the region will likely continue to experience even more rain.

The Killdeer Lions Club will host their annual Fish Fry fundraiser at the High Plains Community Center Aug. 30.

It will be same night as the first Killdeer home football game and during the annual Dunn County Fair.

According to a spokesman for the Lions, deep fried Cod will be served along with salads, garlic bread and dessert bars along with punch and coffee.

The Fish Fry will start at 4 p.m. and end by 6 p.m..

The proceeds from the Fish Fry will be used to help sponsor many of the club’s projects during the year.

In the past, some of the money raised in the fundraiser have been used to the continuing growth in enrollment is going to have more impact in the future.

The location of the parcel hasn’t been publicized yet, but the superintendent said that it should be eligible for annexation and city infrastructure. It should meet all the necessary requirements.

Tony England was born in Indiana in 1942, but when he was 10, his family moved to West Fargo, which he calls his hometown. He grew up wanting to be a pilot, but his eyesight wasn’t good enough, and he had to give up that dream. Instead, he studied math and science and went to MIT, where he majored in physics. When he discovered that he liked fieldwork, he brought geology into the mix and got his Ph.D. in geophysics.

England developed theories about how to predict the electrical properties of

the moon and the planets, and it was this work that brought him to the attention of the National Academy of Sciences. The Academy wanted NASA to include scientists in their Apollo and Skylab space programs; Tony said yes, and joined the Apollo program in 1967.

Despite his eyesight, England was to become a pilot after all. He went to Air Force flight school, where he learned to fly jets.

England’s first brush with space disasters came while he was working as a part of the support team for Apollo 13 – the mission featured in Ron Howard’s movie starring Tom Hanks. England was there in the control room

Tony was himself scheduled to fly to the moon on Apollo 19, but NASA canceled the program after Apollo 17. In 1972, England left NASA to work for the U.S. Geological Survey, for whom he led scientific expedi-

tions to Antarctica and the Arctic. NASA tried to hire him back in 1976, but England was too busy and turned them down.

Three years later, they asked him again, this time enticing him with another chance to go into space.

He couldn’t say no.

Tony’s new role at NASA was as a member of the new space shuttle program. For the first three years, he flew shuttle simulators to help programmers and engineers perfect the computer navigation software. When he finally went up in the Challenger in 1985, his job as a mission specialist was to conduct many of the experiments in the onboard laboratory.

Several Dunn County competitors finished in the top tier of competitors at the National High School Rodeo Championships in Rock Springs.

Riley Reiss of Manning, Kazanne Gjermundson of Marshall, and Karly Bang of Killdeer were among the top finishers in the national championships held in Wyoming.

Overall, the North Dakota contingent placed 21 st in the state stangings, while

Texas won the state title.

For Dunn County, Reiss and Gjermudson made it to the top-20 of the short-go.

In the girls cutting performance Saturday, Gjermundson placed in a tie for 12th place.

She finished the competition in 14th place for the Girls Cutting Average.

Reiss finished up the competition with a 17th in the steer wrestling average.

Given the atmosphere in the 2018 election, I was convinced that North Dakota was going to see something like the Johnson landslide of 1994. Sure enough, it was a landslide but in every state except North Dakota. Nationally, Democrats got the House of Representative by winning all across the country, including other rural states.

So what happened in North Dakota? Bickering between the liberal ideologues and the party regulars didn’t help. The hard fact is that they can’t expect to be left-wing liberals and represent such a conservative constituency. In a democracy, we sort of expect the elected officials to reflect the will of the people. At least, most of the time.

The choice is between winning elections and making ideological points.

If the super liberals don’t want to play the game that is called, they might as well get off the field.

It is with great pleasure that I announce that our Killdeer HOSA members returned from a very educational and stimulating event as they engaged in challenging health careers exploration.

Our group is a small grain of sand among the 245,000 HOSA members!

I congratulate our very own Garrett Calkins for being recognized as one of 19 Outstanding HOSA Leaders at the 42nd International Leadership Conference.

This recognition is an elite award that encompasses the HOSA member’s commitment to health careers, volunteerism, community dedication and integrity!

Many of you may not realize this, but Garrett is now employed with the Killdeer Ambulance.

Congratulations also go out to Ainsley Hayden who received her third place award in Health Career Exploration!

Cherie Roshau also was given the honor of receiving an Award of Merit as an Outstanding HOSA Advisor.

Our North Dakota HOSA representatives (including chaperones and advisors) totaled 94. Our Killdeer team, including chaperones and advisors, was 18.

The Killdeer HOSA group was nearly 20 percent representing our state of the North Dakota at the national leadership conference.

These young adults give us another reason to have a deep pride and respect for our Killdeer educational system.

The following “pride of KPS” students attended the 2019 International HOSA Leadership Conference: Garrett Calkins, Brendon Gibson, Madison Wilhelm, Tyra Dahlen, Kaitlyn Warren, Hatten Kleeman, Maddy Mills, Molly Nies, Chelsey Morlock, Gracie Doe, Abby Sadowsky, Cheyanne Gallant, and Ainsley Hayden.

So I ask you: who would want to govern the ungovernable? Have you ever wondered why North Dakota governors never build significant legacies? There isn’t time to build them. Our government requires the effort of a mountain to bring forth a molehill.

But it looks like Governor Burgum can have the job for the asking. I don’t think he even has to ask.

He is faced with a handful of sulking dissidents on the right and a declining fragmented Democratic Party on the left that has no idea where the center of North Dakota ideology is.

Grand Forks Herald reporter Sam Easter guessed that the Democratic-NPL slide started in the early 1990s. He is right. When the liberal ideologues resisted the nomination of an outstanding moderate candidate for governor because he wasn’t pure on their issues, they sealed the party’s doom.

William Gass, Philosopher/Writer written by Merry Helm July 30, 2019 — Today is the birthday of William Gass, a writer and philosopher born in Fargo in 1924. He received his doctorate in philosophy from Cornell in 1954 and is one of today’s most critically acclaimed authors of fiction and criticism.

Each year, hundreds of book reviewers in the National Book Critics Circle vote for what they feel is the year’s best book in five different categories: fiction, biography or autobiography, general nonfiction, poetry and criticism.

Awards are on a par with the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and for most writers, receiving a National Book Critics Circle Award is considered one of the most prestigious honors in literature.

Ironically, Gass hasn’t always agreed.

In 1985, he won in the category of criticism for a book called, “Habitations of the Word.” In 2003, he won again, this time for a work called “Finding a Form.” He was unable to attend either award ceremony, but he wrote the following for last year’s event: “A few years ago, a book of mine was honored by the National Book Critics Circle, and on that occasion, too, a previous commitment made it impossible for me to attend the award ceremony. Thinking back on my record regarding such things, I realized that when I attended the ceremonies, I became what is called ‘a finalist,’ but when I was unable to be there, I sometimes ‘won’ by a syllable or so down the stretch. I must apologize to my fellow finalists because my absence ... has given me an unfair advantage.

“Naturally,” he continued, “I understand why I have received this award. In the very book in question, I have an essay (often, it appears to be the only one anybody’s read) which complains that many prize-giving panels

(not the National Book Critics Circle, of course) ‘take dead aim at mediocrity and always hit their mark.’ My punishment is plain. I shall try to do better next time... As for this time,” he finished, “Thank you very, very much.”

When Gass was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame in 1998, it was said, “A consummate author with a philosopher’s training, William Gass joined the Washington University faculty in 1969 and (was named a David L. May Distinguished Professor in the Humanities) in 1979.

Gass introduced audiences to his polished, energetic prose with the 1966 novel Omensetter’s Luck and the classic book of short stories In the Heart of the Heart of the Country... and in 1995, Gass completed his monumental novel The Tunnel.

A distinguished artist deeply concerned with the issues writers face, William Gass was named director of the International Writers Center in 1990.”

The book to which they referred, The Tunnel, was many years in the making. In 1992, three years before it was published, John Unsworth wrote

about it in the Arizona Quarterly “...Omensetter’s Luck was (15) years in the making, and parts of that novel first surfaced (11) years before the book did.

That equals (James) Joyce’s record, but it pales beside the saga of The Tunnel: this work has been ‘in progress’ since 1966, and since 1969 some (19) sections, totaling more than 300 pages, have appeared in print.” The comment finished with, “Gass is now sixty-seven, and has been publishing for more than thirty years; more than two-thirds of that career has already been devoted to The Tunnel.”

Gass once wrote, “A culture morally and functionally fails which does not let its crazies, its artists and its saints, its scientists and politicians, claim, on occasion, a higher law than its own congresses can pass, traditions permit, or conscience conceive.” Amen.

Oil written by Merry Helm July 31, 2019 — It was on this date in 1955 that the state’s monthly oil production topped the one million barrel mark for the first time, when

1,000,154 barrels were produced in July of that year.

It was in 1916 that the Pioneer Oil and Gas Company began drilling the state’s first wildcat well southeast of Williston. It turned up dry, but that didn’t stop the many attempts that followed it.

All told, it took 45 years for dry holes to turn into gushers.

The Amerada Petroleum Corporation finally discovered oil near Tioga in April 1951. The well was named “Clarence Iverson Number 1,” and it produced over three hundred barrels of oil in its first 17 hours.

An exciting boom followed, and by year’s end, two-thirds of the state was under lease.

Crowds of strangers swarmed into the region, completely changing the complexion of western North Dakota with overcrowded schools, outbuildings being turned into living and office spaces, and roads wearing out – which led to a boom in the construction trade as well.

Drinking Water written by Merry Helm August 1, 2019 — On this date in 1894, the Grand Forks City Council approved the purchase of a half block of land to create the city’s first water filtration plant – the first in North Dakota.

For two years, the city had been experiencing an epidemic of typhoid fever; 10% of the population had contracted the disease, and 150 people had died.

It turns out that a short distance upstream, Crookston was dumping its sewage directly into the Red River – from which Grand Forks got its drinking water.

Unsanitary conditions existed all across the state in those days.

Every home had an outhouse that could easily contaminate water from wells.

In Bismarck in 1886, untreated water from the Missouri River was being piped into homes and businesses – handy, but not great for drinking.

Many towns also had slaughterhouses, and after hog or beef butchering was completed, there was no systematic means of disposing of rotting carcasses.

Runoff from these areas was infested with billions of deadly germs and bacteria – not to mention the stench, flies and maggots.
