Wild Game Feed welcomes its 16th year using the same heating source as last year.

This year’s recipients, Sons of the American Legion, Green Horn Shooting Sports Program, Baker Wrestling Club, Beaver Creek Rendezvous, Ekalaka Fire Dept. and Baker Lions Club, will share the proceeds from this year’s Wild Game Feed.

Like always, there will be several guns raffled off and other prizes given away. There will also be a guided antelope hunt in Colorado, possible other hunts and a trip to the NFR in Vegas.

ABOUT REGION SEVEN’S HUNTING ACCESS PROGRAM

In 2019, there are 259 Block Management Areas (BMA’s) that provide access to 2,138,356 acres of private, state, and federal lands.

Similar to other FWP Regions, Region 7 (R7) has Type 1 and Type 2 BMA’s, which gives hunters flexibility in gaining permission. About one-third of Region 7 BMA’s are Type 1 and two-thirds are Type 2. In general, Type 1 BMA’s allow the hunter to administer their own permission, while Type 2 BMA’s require obtaining permission from the landowner or a representative. Regardless of permission type, please keep in mind that BMA’s are comprised wholly or partially of private lands. As a hunter, you have the privilege to access these lands and your behavior will play an important role in the future of Montana’s hunting access and heritage.

The Region 7 staff encourages hunters to share their experiences on specific BMA’s. Please return comment cards to sign-in boxes and/ or mail in the self-addressed, postage paid blue comment cards. These comments are used to improve the program as well as to show your appreciation to cooperating landowners. Pictures from your hunt are also an effective way to share your experience and can be emailed to fwpr7bmp@mt.gov. Along with comment cards, the pictures will be shared with the landowners to express your gratitude. Good luck and be safe!

The making of a Montana wildlife photographer

Growing up in eastern Montana, Melissa Stevens was surrounded by hunting culture, and had a deep love for it from a young age.

“My father would gear up every rifle season and I would insist on going every time.

Even before I had a license, I would trail behind him trying to keep up with his steps and sit on hill tops with binoculars like I knew what I was doing.

I just enjoyed being out there in nature and getting to bond with my dad one on one. To get to feel like we were the only two in the world was the coolest feeling,” she recalled fondly. “When I was finally old enough to actually hunt and put the run on the deer, my love became even stronger. Working side by side with my father to stay quiet, read the wind, watch your every step, and try to maintain composure.”

“There’s more to it than just shooting a deer,” she added.

“And when I finally shot, harvesting my first deer, proud praise and excitement coming from my dad made the experience even more memorable.”

Hunting was not Melissa’s only passion that revolved around the outdoors. “Now photography, on the other hand, started in the same space as my love for hunting:

our small cabin in the woods. I grew up spending most of my time there, exploring, imagining, and getting into loads of trouble. When I was about fourteen my parents bought a tiny little point and shoot camera with a feature that let you pick out colors for the frame and turned everything else black and white,” she explained. “I took photos of anything. Trees, bugs, streams, and animals if I was lucky to get the chance. I later moved on to people, begging my friends to take photos in my parents’ backyard and every once in a while, I’d get my sister’s friends to step in front of the frame.”

“It’s actually funny,” Melissa chuckled. “The realization I just had that the two started in the very same place.”

Her parents realized their daughter’s love for photography and purchased her the first professional DSLR camera she owned on her seventeenth birthday. Her passion for hunting grew as she continued her hobby, meanwhile photography became a huge part of her life, as she now does it for a career.

Her two passions crossed paths when she was on a trip with her boyfriend Derek about three and a half years ago. They traveled out to the Slippery Ann Elk Viewing Area so they could listen to the

elk bugle for practice before the upcoming elk season. “If you’ve never been, I highly recommend it.

Seeing the elk strut from forty-five yards away and let out a huge bugle is one of the coolest things to see and hear,” she noted. “I vowed then to carry my camera with me as much as possible while hunting. I’ve captured elk, deer, and even mountain lion hunts.”

Melissa’s love for wildlife photography even landed her a spot in a National Geographic contest. During a day she had spent out in the woods with her camera she was able to get an extraordinary photo of a mountain lion. “I had my lion photo sitting on my computer for months. I’ve taken many many photos and knew that this particular photo was something special but didn’t think anything of it. After months of my mother nagging me to enter the photo in something I finally listened.

National Geographic was having their yearly contest, so I decided late in the day to finally enter it,” Melissa explained.

“What I woke up to was quite a shock. My photo had blown up. I was getting congratulated and applauded and I didn’t even know what for. Turns out my photo made shot of the day. Millions of photos are entered a day and mine was the pick of the day. I was tickled pink. Later that week, I made top shot of the week and was published on their Instagram

and Facebook.”

“As for the big contest, I made it farther than ever expected. Because I was one of the top shots of the week, I am forever featured as one of the top shot photographers for 2017, and to me that is such an accomplishment,” she smiled.

Although Melissa loves the photography end of things, she has just as much fun behind her bow. “My favorite way to hunt is definitely archery!

There’s a whole different aspect to bow hunting than rifle to me. My first season hunting with a bow was one of the best elk seasons I’ve seen to this day. That’s likely why I’m addicted to it,” she laughed. “To be lucky enough to get in on that many bulls and have a ton of close encounters keeps me going back for more!”

“Also, the amazing group of people I get to be with while we hunt really makes the experience what it is. Because of that I would definitely say elk hunting is my favorite,” she smiled.

Fishes of Montana app brings field guide to mobile devices Bozeman – If you were to catch a lake trout or a bull trout in Montana waters, would you know which is which? A new app may be able to help.

“It’s harder than most people think to identify fish correctly,” said Tom McMahon, a professor in the Fish and Wildlife Ecology and Management Program within the Department of Ecology in the College of Letters and Science at Montana State University. “There are a lot of fish that kind of look alike.”

In 1971, long before the university became known as Trout U, MSU published “Fishes of Montana” by C.J.D. Brown, and the field guide has since remained a vital resource for identifying species in the field.

It includes 80 varieties of fish in the state, with histories, distribution maps and characteristics, but in nearly half a century, the book has never been updated.

For years, McMahon and ecology department colleagues Alexander Zale and Christopher Guy, leader and assistant leader of the U.S. Geological Survey Montana Cooperative Fishery Research Unit,bandied the idea of a new edition of the book. However, a different opportunity presented itself when Guy met Whitney Tilt, a Bozeman conservationist whose previous collaborations with Matt Lavin, a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology in MSU’s College of Agriculture, led to

two field identification smartphone apps, Montana Grasses and Flora of the Yellowstone Region.

Rather than revise and reprint “Fishes of Montana,” the book has been given a 21st century update with the release of its namesake Fishes of Montana app. The app, now available for Android and iOS devices, includes information on 90 native and introduced species. The app is free to download, funded by a $10,000 grant from retailer Patagonia that was awarded to the Department of Ecology to promote the restoration of native fish populations as part of the Trout and Cold Water Fisheries Initiative.

The app includes a comprehensive species list for quick reference, which includes the common and scientific names.

It tells whether the fish is native or introduced, threatened or a game fish. Fishes of Montana also contains a glossary, a map of major drainages in Montana, diagrams on fish anatomy and links to more resources.

To develop the app, the MSU team enlisted Tilt as project manager and Katie Gibson of the Bozeman company Moun-

tainWorks as the developer.

They then called on Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, partners in the Cooperative Fishery Research Unit, to provide expertise.

“This partnership is really neat,” Guy said. “It allows us to bring it all together and develop a product with the best resources available in the state.”

Printed guides have been important for those doing field work in places without an internet connection. The new app is equally portable; Fishes of Montana does not require cellular coverage or a wireless connection for basic identification. The app’s information draws from both books and FWP’s online field guide, FishMT. “The app is now the most current resource for contemporary taxonomy,” said David Schmetterling, a fisheries research coordinator with FWP who was part of the development team.

It also relies on the knowledge base of the fisheries community, FWP and the university.

Making correct identifications is important. FWP’s fishing regulations center around being able to identify the species.

For example, Guy said lake trout are considered at risk of becoming endangered due to declining populations in their native waters, but invasive when introduced elsewhere. Bull trout are listed as a threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Daily limits, or fishing bans, reflect these designations.

“Lake trout we want gone in many waters,” Guy said. “Bull trout must stay. But they look similar.”

Lake trout have more spots than bull trout and their tail fins have deeper forks, according to Fishes of Montana. Bull trout’s spots are a pale yellow on their back and red or orange going down the side. Lake trout have light gray spots, never red or orange.

McMahon teaches an ichthyology class each spring. His students learn to identi-

fy fish species using a dichotomous key, which gives a couplet, or pair, of statements and asks the user to pick one of the two choices leading them to another couplet. Those choices become increasingly specific until a match is found. Students learn the key, but often don’t rely on it in the field.

The broader approach of Fishes of Montana “might actually fit better,” Zale said.

The app invites users to identify fish species through a polyclave key, which uses a process of elimination based on observed characteristics. Choose the location within the state, the shape of the tail or if an adipose fin is present. If you don’t know what an adipose fin is, a graphic with an arrow points to its location (between the main back fin and the tail). The -app then provides a list of fish meeting the specified characteristics.

“The polyclavel approach is user friendly,” Tilt said. “It encourages the user to explore and not worry about making a mistake.”

McMahon plans on using the app in his next ichthyology class.

Aside from students and scientists, the app is useful for anglers of all ages. According to Schmetterling, one FWP employee took a beta version on a Missouri River fishing trip and his 10- and 13-yearold children were able to identify the six or seven different species.

“The unique thing about this app is it serves many different purposes to different audiences,” he said.

Fishes of Montana users could also lend insight into changes in distribution or the presence of fish species, including aquatic invasive species. For this reason, the app has information on ten species the State of Montana hopes never to see in Montana waters, such as the snakehead, round goby and bighead carp. If a user is unable to identify a species or wants to share information, the app contains a direct email link to Schmetterling inviting the user to attach a photo.

“What I especially like about the way Fishes of Montana was developed is it promotes communication from people using the app to us,” he said.

North Dakota has variety of licenses available for sportsmen When it comes to hunting and fishing, the state has licenses with differing costs, depending on if it is for a resident or non-resident of North Dakota as well as what is being hunted.

There are even guidelines and pricing for hunters who are disabled or are veterans.

Licenses

When it comes to hunting in North Dakota, there are several categories, including Big Game (Bighorn Sheep, Elk, Moose, Pronghorn, White Tailed and Mule Deer), Waterfowl (Canada Geese, coots, Ducks, Light Geese, Mergansers, Tundra Swan, White Fronted Geese), Upland Game (Hungarian Partridge, Pheasant, Greater Prairie Chicken, Ruffed Grouse, Sage Grouse, Sharp Tailed Grouse, Tree Squirrel and Turkey), Other Migratory Game Birds (Doves, Crow, Sandhill Crane, Snipe and Woodcock), Furbearers (Badger, Beaver, Bobcat, Coyote, Fisher, Fox, Mink, Mountain Lion, Muskrat, Raccoon, River Otter and Weasel), Other Species (Ground Squirrel, Prairie Dog, Porcupine, Rabbit and Skunk).

When it comes to licenses, there are certain prerequisites required by the state of North Dakota for residents, each costing one dollar for a year (Fishing, Hunting, Furbearer Certificate). The General Game and Habitat License costs $20, with residents only needing to purchase one a year, and for all licenses except for Furbearer.

The state of North Dakota

has two combination licenses, one for those who are 16 or older. The second is for veterans with a 100 percent service disability. The one for 16 and older includes fishing, general game and habitat, small game and furbearer licenses for a $50 fee. The veterans combined hunting license includes general game and habitat, along with small game and furbearer licenses for just a $3 fee.

When it comes to fishing, licenses are not required for those under 16 years old. The only exception is for paddlefish tags. The regular fishing license is $16. A married couple can both get fishing licenses for a total of $22, while the senior citizen license (65 and older) is just $5.

There are two other licenses with a $5 fee – for those totally or permanently disabled (proff required) and a veteran with a 50 percent disability.

A paddlefish license has a $10 fee.

Big Game

When it comes to a Deer Gun license (first lottery), there is a $30 charge, while a youth Deer Gun license for those under 16 years old has a $10 charge.

The Deer Bow license is $30 for those 16 and older, while the youth Deer Bow license is $10.

The Pronghorn Gun license (16 and older), is the same as the Moose Gun, Moose Bow, Elk Gun, Elk Bow, Bighorn Sheep Gun and Bighorn Sheep Bow – all for a $30 fee.

The under 16 fee for the

same group is $10.

There is a non-refundable $5 application fee for the moose, elk and sheep lottery applications.

All five groups in Big Game have a required lottery used to control the number of hunters allowed.

Small Game

There are Small Game licenses available for hunters 16 and older to target upland species such as pheasant and grouse, as well as waterfowl and other migratory birds.

Early Canada Goose

There are requirements for all ages when it comes to hunting Early Canada Goose in season. Hunters 16 and older also need small game license and a federal waterfowl stamp. $5

Wild Turkey

Wild Turkey, spring and fall (1st lottery) - small game license also required for those age 16 and older. $15

Sandhill Crane

Sandhill Crane Permit small game license also required for those age 16 and older. $10

Federal Waterfowl Stamp (Duck Stamp)

Required of all hunters ages 16 and older to hunt ducks, geese, swans, mergansers and coot. Exception: Not required to hunt during spring light goose conservation season. $25

Harvest Information Program

(HIP) Registration

All hunters regardless of age must obtain a new Harvest Information Program registration number each year for each state in which they hunt ducks, geese, swans, mergansers, coots, cranes, snipe, doves and woodcock.

Beer Sauce for Barbecuing Venison Burgers

1/2 C. molasses 1/2 C. beer 1/2 C. chili sauce salt & pepper 1/2 C. minced onions 1/4 C. prepared mustard 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce For each pound of ground venison, mix meat with 1/4 C. evaporated milk, onion, salt and pepper, a dash each of Worcestershire and Tabasco sauce. Barbecue, basting with sauce.

Elk Chops with Mushrooms

8 chops (med. size) flour 2 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 tbsp. butter or margarine 1 can mushroom soup 1 can mushroom stems & pieces 3-4 sliced medium potatoes Heat oil in large dutch oven until fairly hot. Flour chops and saute in pan until brown on both sides. Remove from pot and trim away any burned spots. Add one can mushroom soup and one can mushroom stems and pieces (with liquid) to drippings. Heat to combine.

Place chops into a casserole, cover with potato slices. Cover and bake at 350°F for one hour or until meat is tender.

Russell’s Clothing

Pheasant and Wild Rice and Cream Turkey 1 pheasant (quartered) Casserole 1 - 10 1/2 oz. can condensed cream of chicken soup 1/2 C. apple cider 1 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 3/4 tsp salt 1/3 C. chopped onion 1 clove garlic, minced 1 - 3 oz. can sliced mushrooms, drained paprika Heat oven to 350°F. Place pheasant in ungreased 9x9x2 baking dish. Mix soup, cider, Worcestershire sauce, salt, onion, garlic and mushrooms. Pour over pheasant. Sprinkle generously with paprika. Baste occasionally.

Bake, uncovered, one and one-half to two hours until tender. After baking one hour, generously sprinkle again with paprika. Twothree servings.

For two pheasants, use 13 1/2x9x2 dish, double all ingredients.

1 C. wild rice 1 lb. mushrooms, sliced 1 onion, chopped 6 tbsp. butter 2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 3 C. diced cooked turkey 1/2 C. blanched sliced almonds 3 C. turkey or chicken broth 1 1/2 C. heavy cream 3 tbsp. parmesan cheese Wash rice thoroughly and cover with boiling water, let soak one hour, then drain well. Saute mushrooms and onion in 1 tbsp. butter for ten minutes. In greased casserole, combine rice, sauteed vegetables, salt, pepper, turkey and almonds. Add broth and cream; mix lightly. Cover and bake in 350°F oven for one and one-half hours. Remove cover, sprinkle with cheese and dot with remaining butter. Turn oven up to 450°F and bake five minutes. Serves 6-8.

Veterans get a chance for hunting and fishing adventures

The state of North Dakota has several groups devoted to help veterans and first responders have a chance to hunt and fish with a group of others who have served their country.

One group, Warriors on the Water, just finished a summer excursion to Lake Sakakawea in mid-August.

There is another organization operated and run by veterans and to help veterans with a series of hunting adventures and excursions throughout the Midwest.

But, the most unusual part of the group is that it is based in rural western North Dakota near Mott.

Veterans Adventures North Dakota is a 501c3 organization and manned completely by volunteers. The organization, based out of Mott offers hunting, fishing, camping trips and expeditions in North Dakota, all aimed at veterans and 911 responders.

Among the upcoming events for the group are two pheasant hunts in October, an ice fishing tournament in February, an ice fishing adventure yet to be scheduled, along with a Women’s Retreat in the Black Hills of South Dakota in mid-June of 2020.

According to co-founder Elizabeth VanLishout, a for-

mer Marine, the goal of the organization is help provide an outreach to veterans and first responders. “It is about regaining that camaraderie and having that camaraderie that you lost from active service,” she said in a recent Facebook Live posting. “I wish there were five million of me so we could help every single veteran out there,” she said in a recent Facebook post for the group.

“Being an avid hunter and fisherman, I was getting my own stuff mounted, and I would wondered, ‘how do they do that?’” he said. “So, through curiosity, I started getting some books and videos and started learning on my own.”

Over the years, Holler turned the hobby into a small side business. Holler continued growing his skill by joining the North Dakota Taxidermy Association where he “really started learning things” and submitting his taxidermy pieces in competitions around the country. Holler went from making 70 to 80 mounts a year to only a few select art pieces for competitions.

“You go through learning how to do it, then making it a business, then competing and hopefully doing well in competitions.

Eventually it comes around to teaching other people instead of them teaching me, judging competitions, giving critiques and seminars.”

Since his first competition, Holler has won a number of high achieving awards in the field, most notably including two North American champion titles, National Taxidermist of the Year award, and his highest award, the Best in World championship title for his award-winning pheasant.

“That’s the one that everyone strives for,” said Holler, pointing to the Best in World plaque. “It’s gratifying now, but there were lots of ups and downs to get there.”

In competitions like the best in world competition, Holler has to add a whole new level of detail. For his taxidermy to even be considered, he has to cast his own beak and feat out of plastic and paint them with meticulous detail. Holler said that from a step

Outdoor shooting programs coming to Hettinger Frank Turner

If there is one thing Adams County is known for, it’s hunting. During the fall season, locals and visitors take advantage of an abundance of deer and pheasants, but in the off-season, hunters upkeep their shooting skills at the firing range.

With a local firing range available for use, leaders in Hettinger are working toward creating new trap shooting and archery teams specifically for younger students looking for new activities.

So far, the new trapshooting team and archery team are in their beginning stages of coming to fruition. Even still, the idea for new shooting sports teams has been received with great interest by the local area. According to Adams County NDSU Extension Agent Hannah Nordby, 25 people, both adults and kids, from the Adams County area have expressed interest in either joining or volunteering for the teams.

“For the past few years, outdoor shoot-

ing sports programs are something that have been gaining traction state wide in North Dakota,” said Nordby. “I knew that this was an area that had community support and interest, so it seemed logical to put the teams together.”

Nordby said that both archery and trap shooting would benefit youth because they are activities that everybody can participate in. Age is the only limitation for students interested in joining the club. For the archery team, students must be at least 8 years old. To participate in the trap shooting team, students must complete a hunter’s safety course.

Currently, Nordby is still looking for grant money and equipment for the new outdoor shooting program. If everything goes according to plan, Nordby said that she hopes to have the archery program up and going by November and the trap shooting team going by next spring.

Bowman-Haley Dam added to advisory warning list

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) recently issued a blue-green algae water advisory for the Bowman-Haley Dam, a lake south of Bowman, on July 29.

Bowman-Haley Dam was one of fifteen lakes recently added to the NDDEQ blue-green algae advisory list. The environmental agency’s advisory list shows lakes that have tested positive for blue-green algae and the toxins the algae produces.

Blue-green algae, otherwise known as cyanobacteria, are microscopic organisms that produce cyanotoxins. In high concentrations, cyanotoxins can pose health risks to people and animals.

When contaminated water is ingested, the NDDEQ cites that cyanotoxins can cause serious illness and a host of symptoms, including diarrhea, vomiting, numb lips, tingling fingers, dizziness, rashes, hives, or skin blisters.

Dogs are especially susceptible to the toxins and there is no known antidote to the toxins, according to North Dakota Game and Fish.

Lakes under water advisory can still be used for water-based recreational activities, however the

water advisory suggests avoiding recreational activity in the water if the water looks like “spilled green paint or pea soup.”

The NDDEQ also suggests rinsing off with non-lake water after contact and avoiding areas of “scum” when boating.

Game and Fish wildlife veterinarian Charlie Bahnson said that an infected deer usually does not have visible symptoms of the disease. The only sign of chronic wasting disease is that a deer will look skinny and frail in the last month of the diseases progression.

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are no known or reported cases of CWD infecting people. Even still, the CDC has suggested that people hunting in an infected area should consider “many factors when determining when determining whether to eat meat from deer and elk harvested from areas with CWD, including the risk they are willing to accept.”

To combat the spread of the disease, North Dakota Game and Fish introduced new regulations to specific hunting units in North Dakota. These new regulations ban the use of baiting and scent products and restrict the transportation of certain portions of a deer carcass in high-risk areas. Game and Fish wildlife veterinarian Charlie Bahnson said that the new regulations are vital to keeping the disease in check.

In addition to new regulations, Bahnson said that Game and Fish plans to set up testing sites throughout affected areas. At these testing sites, people will be able to test whether their deer is positive for CWD. The exact locations of the testing sites are yet to be determined.

“It’s a pretty serious disease and it really has

the potential to impact the future of hunting in North Dakota,” said Bahnson. “We really do need all the hunters and people that value wildlife to collectively grab this thing by the horns and prevent the spread of this disease.”

Women in hunting

Although the overall number of hunters in North America is steadily decreasing, among women, the sport is rising in popularity. According to a survey by the U.S. Wildlife and Fish Service, since 1991, the number of women hunters in America has increased by 36 percent.

Women are becoming interested in hunting for a variety of reasons, but many cite an interest in ethical food practices and spending time outdoors as motives.

In response to the number of women taking up hunting, there’s an increasing array of weapons, accessories and clothing available for them.

interested in taking up the sport, it’s a good idea to shop for smaller weapons that are specially designed for women. They’re lighter and easier to handle.

Also, there are many accessories that can make hunting easier when you’re getting started, such as anti-recoil pads that reduce the impact on your shoulder when you shoot.
