Many crops project a loss in 2015 Many projected crop budgets show a negative return to labor and management for 2015, according to Andy Swenson, North Dakota State University Extension Service farm management specialist.

Crop prices have declined but total production costs have resisted this decline. A positive is that projected yields for most crops have increased and some cost items, most notably fuel,

will be lower.

About half the regions project a positive return to labor and management for spring wheat, durum and soybeans.

The highest returns to labor and management for spring wheat, at approximately $10 per acre, are in the east-central, northeastern and southeastern regions.

Soybeans show a return ranging from $14 to minus $14 in all but one region.

Projected returns for corn are negative. It ranges from of minus

$40 to minus $73 per acre in all regions except the western regions

where lower costs, but greater production risks, reduce the losses to around minus $10 per acre.

Projected per acre returns to labor and management for oil sunflowers range from $2 to minus $14 in the western and central regions.

For canola, the projected returns range from minus $10 to minus $20 in the major growing regions.

region, projected returns for nonoil sunflowers range from $58 to minus $46 per acre.

"Some crops are projecting mostly positive returns for 2015," Swenson says. "Malting barley and dry edible beans project returns to labor and management ranging from $30 to $50 per acre in most regions.

Flax shows similar returns in the north-central, northeastern and western regions. Lentils are projected to bring the best returns of any crop by ranging from $90 to $115 per acre in the north-central and western regions."

Minor crops, such as mustard, buckwheat, safflower, chickpeas and rye, also show positive returns to labor and management by ranging from $30 to $50 per acre. However, there may be more production and market price risk with these crops and crop insurance may not be available.

"Overall costs did not decline as I expected," Swenson says. "Fertilizer prices are very similar to the amounts I used in last year's budgets. The price of seed, such as for small-grains, will be lower in 2015. A notable exception is durum, which shows a sharp increase.

Corn, soybean and dry bean seed is flat to lower, but the price of canola, lentils and safflower seed will increase."

Crop insurance costs generally will be lower and land costs will be relatively flat. However, repair expenses will increase. Chemical expenses are projected to increase slightly.

Pastor reopens storied Marmarth church

By JASON WASKIEWICZ | For the Pioneer Retired Pastor Norman Rice heard the call to reopen the Marmarth Bible Church while on vacation in the Northwest.

His traveling companion had never visited the Dakotas, so they traveled through the southwest corner of North Dakota and the first town they encountered was Marmarth.

They explored the town and discovered the Marmarth Bible Church sitting empty.

Rice immediately was drawn to the church, located at 204 1st Ave SW in Marmarth, and

they investigated its story. Local residents provided him with phone numbers and they returned home to Denver.

Over the next few days he was able to contact Terry Bagley, current pastor of the Mound Church.

In late July 2013, Rice returned to the area and spoke at the Mound Church about his dream of reopening the Marmarth Bible Church. Over the course of the summer, he wound up his affairs in Denver and

moved to Marmarth.

Because the church had been empty for so long, a lot of repair was required. He thanked Terry Bagley and city employees of Marmarth for fixing the plumbing and doing a lot of the cleanup around the church.

Rice held his first service Oct. 1 in an empty church.

Since then, people have been coming with a small nucleus of regular congregants. Rice’s goal is to get the church ready and he admitted

that he might not see an increase during his time. But, he believed that the work after he is gone. The church has the capacity to hold the entire population of Marmarth, so the potential is there.

Rice said that he is in Marmarth for the longterm and even planned to be buried there.

By the computer in his office, he keeps a sign that references Abraham’s time in Egypt during the famine: “Stay in Canaan (Marmarth), don’t go to Egypt (Denver), even when there is a famine.”

The church is open every Sunday. He rings the bell at 10:15 and services begin at 10:30 a.m.

It is a nondenominational church and all are welcome.

Rice hoped to lay the groundwork for the church during his time in Marmarth.

The church needs a lot of physical improvements, including some major roof repairs and work on the siding.

Already, the church has seen donations of time and money to begin the repairs.

He also noted that the church held a Thanksgiving dinner for the community. Assistance came from all over in many forms from workers to money to food.

Pastor Rice was born in Oklahoma and spent 6 years in the U.S. Air Force.

This included a brief stint at the Minot Air Base in 1957. After he separated from the service, he lived in Austin where he worked with

22 teams compete in Coyote Calling Contest

By Lori Kesinger Despite the bitter cold weather, there was a great turnout for the first annual Southeastern Montana Coyote Calling contest held Jan. 9-10 in Baker, MT. Twenty-two teams, 58 hunters competed for the top four places starting Jan. 9. A total of 28 coyotes were brought in at the conclusion of the one day contest, Jan. 10.

First place team was Rusty Knuths, Doug

Stickney and Guy Stickney,- bringing in four coyotes. Second place team was Charles Moore and Arnie Beardsley with three coyotes. Third place team was Will Ecord, Joe Teini and Levi Swyres with three coyotes. Fourth place team was Andy Cathey, Joe Brown, and Zane Williams with three coyotes. Second through fourth place finishers were determined by total weight of the coyotes brought in.

The little dog and big dog competition were both won by the first place team - Rusty Knuths, Doug Stickney and Guy Stickney.

Three guns were given away as door prizes.

Two guns raffled were won by Luanne Gentilini and Guy Weimer. Three landowner gift certificates were given away and those winners were Jarrett Hadley, John Tronstad, and Doug and

Randi Wenz.

Coyote calling contests have steadily increased in popularity nationwide in the last decade. The contests help manage coyotes that are increasingly

impacting livestock and wild game populations. The local hunt is a result of a great team of volunteers and outstanding support from local businesses, farmers and ranchers.

After a few years of vacancy, the Agronomist position with Southwest Grain in New England has been filled, by two people. According to Agronomy.org, “agronomists are plant and soil scientists who develop innovative farm practices and technologies that not only boost crop yields but also control pests and weeds and protect the environment.” Taking

on the position are two people that have ties to the surrounding area.

James Duletski is a Belfied native who grew up on a farm that was roughly 2500 acres between pasture and farmland.

Duletski attended North Dakota State University, initially majoring in Accounting.

After some time in that program, Duletski felt it would better suit him to focus on an ag-related profession. He finished

During his eductation, Duletski interned with Southwest Grain twice, and after working in Bismarck for about eight months, returned to New England to take on this full time role.

Also joining Southwest Grain as an Agronomist is Brooke Kuntz. Kuntz grew up on a farm north of South Heart where she did some farming and ranching.

At a career crossroad, Kuntz was led to the agronomy industry by her father. After doing some research on the profession and industry, she enrolled at Bismarck State College. Kuntz earned a degree in Ag Industry and Technology.

Kuntz also interned with Southwest Grain and really enjoyed her experience.

“I liked it so much that I came back,” Kuntz said.

Both said they were led to the industry from their past experiences growing up on a farm. Coming from being raised on the farm, they have knowledge of the industry, and coupled with their education they feel they’re poised for success. They also feel they have a great opportunity with the work they can do in New England.

“There’s a huge opportunity for us in this area,” Duletski said. “My whole

Page 13 expertise, so they can in turn communicate the things they’ve learned to the farmers.

They also spend the slow season getting prepared for the next spring and summer. Right now, according to Duletski,

they can already pre-purchase seed and chemicals in preparation.

Duletski and Kuntz are excited to help Southwest Grain anyway they can, and assist the farmers to the best of their knowledge and abilities.

With the Agronomy division being vacant for a few years, the fresh eyes and minds of Duletksi and Kuntz hope to breathe new life on something that has fallen short in the past couple farming seasons. Kuntz looks at it as an opportunity to expand the business as well.

During the farming season, Duletski and Kuntz will put on a lot of miles on the road.

“Not exactly long miles,” Duletski said.

Kuntz agreed.

“Once the busy season comes, we put on a lot of miles going out scouting, talking to farmers” Kuntz said.

As the busy season dwindles, their schedules slow, but their work doesn’t.

They’ll spend the

winter months gathering knowledge.

“Anything we can get our hands on to increase the knowledge of farming,” Kuntz said. “And how to help farmers.”

Both Kuntz and Duletski attend trade shows, farm shows and other continuing education events to boost their own

The Industrial Commission recently approved $5,202,225 in Outdoor Heritage Fund grants for 16 projects.

“We are impressed with these projects recommended to us by the Outdoor Heritage Fund Advisory Board that will protect and enhance North Dakota’s resources across the entire state,” commission members said in a joint statement.

The Industrial Commission, chaired by Gov. Jack Dalrymple, Chairman, and including Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem and Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, oversees the Outdoor Heritage Fund.

Soyfoods can offer a number of healthy benefits, including providing a lean protein source that is lower in saturated fats than other forms of protein. Calcium-fortified soymilk offers the same nutritional value as cow's milk but can still be consumed by those who are lactose intolerant. Soy can help many people maintain healthy weights, and soyfoods promote cardiovascular health.

While soyfoods can be beneficial, such foods are not perfect. Allergies to soy are possible, and as with any dietary supplement, moderate consumption may be all that's necessary to provide nutritional benefits.

Overconsumption of soy may not provide the desired results.

One concern regarding soy is its relationship to genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Reports suggest that the vast majority of soybeans produced in the United States are GMOs. While these soybeans are primarily used for livestock feed, many foods that people eat also contain GMO soybeans.

The jury is still out with regard to the impact that GMO foods have on personal health. Proponents of GMOs say their use makes agricultural products safer and more affordable. GMO crops may be resistant to pests, eliminating the need for herbicides and pesticides. But opponents of GMOs say that they may be harmful, as they might have less nutritional value, incite allergic reactions, cause problems

Highway crosses have marked Montana roads for decades

Country, white crosses alongside Montana roads and highways warning motorists to be careful.

A single cross will sometimes be the only one on a vast stretch of road, but on others they can appear

almost every mile. They stand clean and bright or rusty and faded, often bearing flowers or other decorations.

In 2014, 192 people died in accidents on Mon-

tana roads. Forty-three of those people were killed in alcohol related crashes and could easily have been prevented.

program 62 years ago to remind motorists of the state’s driving fatalities and to caution them to drive with care and sobriety. It is their continued hope that when people see the crosses they will slow down and pay attention to what they are doing.

The Fatality Marker Safety Program (previously named the White Cross Program) began in Missoula after six motorists died in local traffic accidents during the 1952 Labor Day weekend. The program was the idea of Hellgate Post No. 27's Floyd Eaheart.

Legion posts throughout the state adopted the program after the Montana Highway Commission approved the program in January 1953.

Since the Fatality Marker Safety Program's start over 60 years ago, it is estimated over 2,000 white crosses have been placed along Montana's highways. This represents a cemetery of over five acres.

It is the responsibility of a local Post to see that the white crosses are erected at the site of fatal traffic accidents. Each Montana Legion Post is allocated a certain area of responsibility for erecting and maintaining the white crosses. Not all highway fatalities are marked.

Some areas of Montana do not have a local American Legion Post, others do not participate in the program. Furthermore, when a highway is reconstructed to correct what may have been the cause of a fatality, all markers are removed. Only those fatality markers specifically requested by a family member are replaced.

The white crosses have also achieved a certain degree of notoriety by being broadcast on many tv stations and published in newspapers nationwide.

The Montana Governor’s office, Department of Transportation and the American Legion in Helena receive many inquiries every year from out of state people regarding

Tips for prospective horse owners Children often dream of waking up one morning and finding their own horse or pony in their yards. Some people are able to make this dream a reality and own these beautiful animals.

Whether raising a horse for pleasure or profession, it is important to know that caring for horses can be labor-intensive. The reward for properly taking care of a horse is a healthy and well-trained animal. But horse ownership is a significant and expensive responsibility, so it is important that prospective owners understand what they are getting into before they make any final decisions.

Breed The first to consider when mulling horse ownership is the breed.

If you are unfamiliar with horses, it is best to research different breeds online and visit horse breeders and owners.

Perhaps workers at a stable or farm nearby can guide your choice. There also are forums devoted to horses and care. Some recommended breeds for first-time owners include quarter horses, paints, and morgans. However, all horses are individuals and may have their own unique personality traits.

Acreage and housing Horses are large animals and will need room to exercise and roam.

They require a corral or pasture to stretch their legs, so a potential horse owner will need a relatively large property to give a horse the space it needs. In addition to the corral, the horse will require a shelter from the elements. A shed or stable should be at least 10

to 12 feet in both width and length. The height of the stable should be a minimum of 8 feet.

This stable will provide shelter in both the cold and heat.

When establishing a pasture, be sure it is fenced in with a highly visible fence that is tall enough so that the horse cannot easily jump it.

The fence should be clearly visible so the horse does not mistakenly try to go through it, risking entanglement or injury.

Feeding The average saddle horse weighs roughly 1,000 pounds if not more. The animal can eat anywhere from 17 to 26 pounds of feed per day.

Feed is a combination of grain, hay and pasture, but salt also should be made available to the horse. If the weather prevents grazing, supplemental hay will be needed.

Keep in mind hay bails can weigh up to 85 pounds. They also will take up considerable space. This is something that needs to be factored into the space requirement for a horse.

Feed and water troughs can be purchased at livestock supply stores or be made from repurposed buckets and barrels.

Horses need plenty of fresh water to drink and the water trough should be checked and cleaned regularly to maintain a sanitary environment.

Tack and saddles Depending on how you use the horse, you will need saddles, reins, bits, stirrups, cinches, spurs, ropes, and collars.

Saddle bags and cushions may be needed if you will be on the horse for long periods of time. If a horse tack retailer is not nearby, many items can be ordered online and shipped to your home.

In addition, pitchforks,

shovels, brushes and grooming supplies will be needed to keep the stable and horse clean and comfortable.

Manure A large animal who eats several pounds of food per day will produce a lot of waste.

It's key to have a plan in place to manage manure. You may want to convert manure into organic fertilizer. Check

to see if there is a way to dispose of manure in your area or donate it to be used for gardening or vegetable cooperatives. Some people will purchase manure to use in their private landscapes. Establish a strategy for manure usage or disposal before buying a horse, as manure can accumulate rapidly and attract flies and other insects.

Veterinary care Research and develop a relationship with a veterinarian prior to purchasing a horse. Horses require routine vaccinations and examinations, and deworming is necessary to control internal parasites. Hooves will need to be trimmed regularly, so it behooves owners to establish a relationship with a qualified farrier.

Starlings a costly problem for livestock producers Starlings can be a major problem for livestock producers in the northern Plains in the winter.

"During a year like our last one, when the weather is particularly cold and the ground is snow-covered, these birds are looking for convenient food sources," North Dakota State University Extension Service dairy specialist J.W. Schroeder says.

"Unfortunately, cattle feeding areas provide these sources."

Starlings will eat livestock feed, and defecate in feed and water and on equipment and buildings.

"These problems raise concerns about economic efficiency, animal health, and equipment and building maintenance,"

Schroeder says. "If this winter proves to be extremely cold, it is likely that these starlings will be a problem for many dairy farms again this year."

Starlings can eat 50 percent of their bodyweight in feed a day, he

adds. One thousand birds easily can consume 100 pounds of grain in a day.

The birds are abundant year-round, but they often are a problem only in the winter.

Many producers have tried using shotguns, pyrotechnics or just clos-

ing barn openings, but these methods have not proven to be very effective, according to Schroeder. Hawks are natural predators of starlings, but attracting hawks to live near the dairy farm can be problematic.

The European star-

ling, also known as the common starling, is not native to the U.S., so producers can use lethal control measures. The U.S. Department of Agriculture offers baiting services for farmers.

"This can be effective, but it has a significant cost," Schroeder says.

Another option is a pesticide called Starlicide, which is available for farmers to purchase if they have a private pesticide license. This chemical comes premixed and ready to use.

Schroeder recommends that producers check with their local feed cooperative or chemical suppliers for prices and availability of the product in their area.

"Before you use this chemical, make sure that

no protected birds will haveaccess to the bait because it will kill most types of birds or fowl," Schroeder cautions.

"However, the chemical does not have a significant effect on cattle or other animals around the farm."

To use Starlicide effectively, you first need to pre-bait the birds for about a week with something palatable, such as feed grain, dog food or energy pellets. The best time to put the bait out is in the morning, when the ground is frozen or snow-covered.

"It is a good idea to notify any close neighbors of your plans so it won't come as a surprise if they find dead birds on their property," Schroeder advises.

Celiac disease versus gluten intolerance Many people are familiar with the gluten-free movement, even if they don't tailor their diets around gluten-free foods.

What began as a relatively unknown dietary restriction among people diagnosed with a certain intestinal disease has branched out to include many other people who avoid gluten for various health reasons.

A sensitivity to or intolerance of gluten is not the same as suffering from celiac disease, a condition that requires people to refrain from eating gluten.

Understanding the differences between the disease and the decision to avoid gluten can make it easier to understand the various effects gluten has on the body.

What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein composite found primarily in wheat and other grains, such as barley, rye and spelt. The stored proteins of corn and rice are sometimes called glutens, but their compositions differ from true gluten.

Gluten often is found naturally in foods and is an important source of protein. Gluten also may be added to foods to supplement their protein content.

Gluten gives dough its elasticity and helps breads

rise and keep their shape.

Gluten usually gives baked goods a chewy texture.

Baking will make gluten molecules come together, which stabilizes the shape of the final product.

Gluten also may be used as a stabilizing agent in other foods, like sauces and ice cream.

Celiac disease Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder linked to the consumption of gluten.

The Celiac Disease Foundation says the disease affects one in 100 people across the globe.

When those with celiac disease eat foods that contain gluten, their bodies see the protein as a foreign invader. As a result, the body mounts an immune system response and ends up attacking itself in the area of the small intestine, which is responsible for nutrient absorption.

When the small intestine is damaged severely, it is unable to extract vitamins and minerals from food, leading to various health problems, including malnutrition.

In many cases, celiac disease is hereditary. A person with a first-degree relative, meaning a parent, child or sibling, with celiac disease has a one in 10 risk of developing celiac themselves.
