Cards look to finally break through to a State Baseball Tournament appearance

By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer 2020 was finally supposed to be the year the Langdon-Edmore-Munich high school baseball team got through the Region 4 Tournament and made their first state tourney appearance since 2006. After three years of close calls and disappointment, the Cards team was loaded and looking forward to taking the next step. As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down last March, and the Cardinals were once again frustrated not getting that opportunity.

Langdon-Edmore-Munich lost five very good players to graduation in Jackson Delvo, Jesse Fetsch, Logan Harder, Brennan Kitchin, and Peyton Ullyott but still have a very good group back that is more than hungry to make it to the next level.

The 2021 Cardinals team has 26 boys out for the team in grades 9-12. Leading the way will be five seniors - Simon Romfo, Grant Romfo, Cooper Zimmer, Alex Cluchie, and Drew Simpson. There is just one junior on the team in Tucker Welsh and five talented sophomores with Jack Romfo, Gage Goodman, Carter Tetrault, Markus Kingzett, and Brady Regner. The biggest class of them all are the Cards freshmen: Mason Romfo, Cole Welsh, Kadyn Hein,

Jace Rime, Nic Kingzett, Dawson Hein, and Parker Rime. On the junior high level, the Cards have two eighth graders, Tommy Gendron and Michael Entzi, and six seventh graders in Theo Romfo, Tyson Gemmill, EJ Cluchie, Jax Johnson, Jon Lill, and Levi Swanson.

Josh Krivarchka is coaching the Cardinals again this season, and he is assisted

by Tanner Groth and Kade Pengilly, who is new to the program this year. When asked about this year’s team and the season ahead, Coach Krivarchka said, “We are excited to get the season going on time this year. With not being able to play last year, these boys deserve every opportunity they can get. We have very high goals for this year’s team. We want to continue to improve throughout the season and be playing our best baseball at tournament time.”

The Cardinals opened their season at May-Port-C-G on April 6 and are scheduled to have their first home game April 12 versus Bottineau, although the weather forecast does not great for that to happen.

Langdon-Edmore-Munich is in a region this year with Grafton, Park River Area, Midway-Minto, and Pembina County North. St. Thomas-Drayton-Valley-Edinburg folded their program this year. The State Class B Tournament will be held at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown June 3-5.

Cardinals track teams look for redemption after missing the 2020 season

By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer After a very promising finish to the 2019 track season, the Langdon-EdmoreMunich Cardinals boys and girls track teams were looking forward to a big year in 2020 that was stopped before it got started due to COVID-19. The 2021 season has had a great start with some fantastic weather which has allowed the Cards teams to mostly practice outdoors. Here is a look at the 2021 teams: The Lady Cards took third at the 2019 state meet and lost three seniors to graduation in Elyse Ramberg, Brooke Bakke, and McKenna Belle. This year’s team has 30 kids out in grades 7-12. Leading this year’s squad are four seniors - Lexi Olson, Lauren Baril, Raelyn Klindt and Heather Okeson. There are also five juniors out in Mykei Anderson, Abby Forest, Marlee Hetletved, Alexa Schneider, and Rebekah Wells. Sophomores include Lexi Bata, Madison Knoke, and Sarah Nelson. The six freshmen out on the squad are Cora Badding, Isabelle Olson, McKenna Schneider, Jane Sillers, Kate Sillers, and Jalynn Swanson. There are a nice group of junior high girls on the team in Claire Chaput, Payton Hall, Breanna Henderson, Tallia Johnston, Mikaela Olson, Meredith Romfo, and Drew Rostvet. Four seventh graders round out the team: Kenadee Cluchie, Gracie Witzel, Christine Joyner, and McKenzie Regner.

When asked about this year’s team, head coach Jane Hart said, “ We are looking forward to a great year, especially with the snow being gone by the first day of practice! We did not attend any indoor track meets because of COVID but are looking forward to more outdoor meets than usual. The athletes are eager to compete and to make up for some lost time. The junior high will be fun to watch as this is a first-time experience for both seventh and eighth graders.”

The boys teams doesn’t have quite the numbers of the girls, as they have 19

athletes out for the program. Leading the boys this year will be seniors Tucker Regner and Skyler Fincher, who is a newcomer to the team. There are four juniors with Ben Girodat, Keenan Kalhagen, Zack Rostvet, and Ryan Boesl.

On the varsity are also two sophomores, Ethan Okeson and Mason Christianson, and two freshmen, Edward Freer and Landon Welsh. The biggest class is eighth graders - Cody Amble, Kartheek Chapara, Brock Freer, Jake Sanders, Reed Scherr, and Jacob Lowery. There are also three seventh graders on the roster: Evan Hall, Miles Fincher, and Tanner McDonald.

Rich Olson is once again the head coach for the boys program, and he said, “We have 19 boys in grades 7-12 currently out. We have a young team that has shown us daily that they have great potential for the future. We have two seniors in Tucker Regner and Skyler Fincher. Tucker is our top returning point scorer. He is focusing mainly on pole vault and hurdles. Skyler is a new sprinter and thrower in our program who missed out on last season like everyone else. Our top thrower back this season is Ben Girodat. Ben is showing progress in all the throwing events and has given us great leadership. We are also excited about the potential of our younger athletes that have tested and performed well in practice. We believe our junior high has a chance to be as strong as it’s been in years. Without a 2020 season to look back on, it will be a different feeling this year. We look forward to learning about what potential our team has and improving throughout the season!”

Both girls and boys teams will begin their seasons at Devils Lake for a meet on April 12. The Cards will host three meets this year: the Early Bird Meet on April 15, the Cardinal Invite on April 22, and a junior high meet on May 4. The State A & B Track Meet will be held once again in Bismarck at the Community Bowl on May 28-29. Todd Hetler is helping out with both programs this year.

Cardinals boys and girls golfers get an early start on the course

By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer

In what seems to be very fitting, the Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals boys and girls golf teams got off to a great start this season, as they were able to have their first practice of the season on March 29 out at the Langdon Country Club.

Cardinals head coach Jenny Romfo, who is coaching not only the girls but also the boys program this year, said, “In my 15 years of coaching, I only remember two other years that we have been able to start out at the course. That should make for a fun year!” Of course, everyone is hoping for a fun year this season being in 2020, there was no year at all due to COVID-19.

The Cardinals have good numbers in both the boys and girls programs this season, with a number of new golfers on the girls side.

There are 11 boys out for the team, starting with one senior, Danny Hart, and one junior, Ethan Kram. There are three sophomores out for the team in Alex Gellner, Harrison Nuelle, and Nathan Kitchin.

The biggest class on the squad are the freshman - Tyler Kram, Rudy Moser, Reese Hoffarth and Adam Hart. Two seventh graders round out the roster with Keaton Ullyott and Owen Grover. AllState golfer Sid Ullyott and Hunter Feil were the two seniors lost to graduation.

About the boys program, Coach Romfo said, “ Three of the returning golfers have golfed at the varsity level. Alex and Ethan participated in the State golf meet two years ago, and Daniel saw varsity time during the year. The rest have been practicing and will be ready by the first meet. It should be a good season as we didn’t have to practice inside at all.”

On the girls side, there are 20 golfers out for the team. Leading the way in experience is senior Gracie Christianson and juniors: Morgan Thielbar, Claire Hiltner, and Lauren Gendron. One sophomore letter winner is back in Olivia Christianson, plus freshman Taryn Romfo and Arianna Haraseth. There are five high school newcomers to the program this year in juniors Morgan Freije and Ashley Perry, sophomore Halle Jabs, and freshmen Emmy Pankratz and Payton Harpestad. On the junior high level there are eighth graders Rylee Medbery and Catelyn Goodman and seventh graders: Emma Hetler, Nora Lorenz, Mya Johnson, Raeleigh Ratzlaff, Sophia Nuelle and Maggie Iverson. The girls team will look to reload this year after losing All-State golfers Savannah Ullyott and Greta Haslekaas plus Abby Romfo to graduation.

On the girls team, Coach Romfo said, “I am excited to see what this group can do out on the course. I’ve seen a lot of good things in practice. Their willingness to go out on their own says a lot about how they will improve throughout the season. Looking at a few with some varsity experience: Gracie Christianson has been a consistent golfer for us as well as Olivia Christianson. They both golfed on the state team two years ago. Morgan Thielbar saw varsity tournaments that year, also. The others returning saw junior high and jJV meet time and should be ready to golf at the varsity level. I am very excited to have all the newcomers. They are very anxious to learn the game and all show promise out on the course.”

The State meet for the boys will be held at Carrington, with the girls at Jamestown June 1-2. Connie Kjos is assisting Romfo once again this year with both programs.
