The 2020 Census also has a few changes. Duerr explained that for the first time people will be able to respond online or by phone. This will be the preferred method of response. The census office is encouraging the local ‘complete count committee’ to educate the local public on the importance of responding and how to respond online.

“It’s safe, secure and confidential. Your information and privacy are protected. It’s economical both for you and for the taxpayers. It’s greener by saving trees, and it’s user-friendly, offering you help screens and the ability to review your answers,” Duerr shared.

The other option for a digital response is to do so by phone.

Census employees are ready to take your information question by question from the convenience of your phone.

“However, the traditional paper surveys will still be sent out by mail at a later date. In person follow-ups will be done for nonresponses,” Duerr explained.

For those who receive an inperson visit on behalf of the 2020 Census, there is something

to keep in mind. In this day and age people are rightfully very cautious with the many scams that have become prevalent.

The Census Bureau will never ask for: • your full Social Security number • money or donations • anything on behalf of a political party • your full bank or credit card account numbers • your mother’s maiden name All Census Bureau employees will have an ID badge. You can feel free to ask them to see it if you are uncertain. You can also lookup their name on the census bureau website to verify their employment.

The census starts in March and will be wrapped up by July.

In order to collect all this information, the Census Bureau needs your help in two ways.

One is to participate, and the other is a great employment opportunity. Recruiters are seeking more than 1,000 workers across North Dakota and in every county. Census jobs are paying between $18-$21 an hour, depending on the location. Interested applicants need to visit www.2020Census.gov/ jobs to apply.

Langdon City Commission looking to fill chair

By Melissa Anderson Republican Editor The Langdon City Commission had a light agenda, but the meeting was heavy with discussion on the future of the city. The focus for the Commission was the need to raise utility rates, a potential Phase 3 project, and the still vacant commissioner position.

Utility rates have been a concern for the Commission as the rates have not kept pace with operational expenses. Langdon City Auditor RoxAnne Hoffarth explained that the street light expenses came up short $4,300 for the fiscal year of 2019. Street lights are not the only utility revenue falling short as Northeast Regional Water District has an annual increase of about 3 percent that the city has not kept pace with.

“We need to raise rates. We talked about that last meeting,” Langdon City Commission Chair Jerry Nowatzki said.

Nowatzki proposed two approaches to the needed rate increases. One being waiting to make a large rate increase during the budgeting for 2021 or inputting a smaller rate increase now and then another rate increase once the budget is completed in the fall. Discussion between the commissioners and Hoffarth also noted that garbage may need a rate increase as well. Agreement was made that an increase of rates was necessary.

“I was thinking....Plan on two rate increases right now. One right now, as soon as we can get good numbers to stop the bleeding, and then one when we do the budget,” Nowatzki stated.

The commissioners were in agreement that this would be a good solution. It would also allow for the review of the ordinances. Nowatzki and the rest of the commissioners noted that these proposed rate in-

creases were not a result of the ordinances.

“That gets thrown in there, also, but the budget increase is not because of the ordinance.

The budget increase is because we have been going negative on utilities,” Nowatzki said.

The Commission directed Hoffarth to collect data for the next meeting for review. The decision on rate increases will be discussed further at that time.

Moore Engineering Project Manager Andrew Aakre joined the Commission for updates and reviews as well as future planning. The 2020 construction season within Langdon will be the finishing of Phase 1 and 2 projects. Aakre and the commissioners discussed the city’s comfort with pursuing additional projects as soon as 2021. During discussion it was noted that any future project would most likely require special assessments to residents.

The Commission decided that the best course of action was to hold informational meetings and encourage participation in surveys to determine the direction the citizens of Langdon would like to go.

In Other Business • The Langdon City Commission still has a vacant position on the Commission. Those interested in being appointed to the Langdon City Commission can contact RoxAnne Hoffarth at Langdon City Hall or one of the current sitting commissioners.

• Commissioner Lawrence Henry reported that the City Hall renovation on the fire department side would require an additional $33,922 for the project. Henry explained that a better insulation was required and spray foam forming a 3 inch barrier had been recommended. The commissioners approved the additional expense as there is still room within the loan budget.

2019 Year in Review: July through September Summertime in Cavalier County is always busy, and 2019 was no different. July, of course, kicked off celebrations for Independence Day with Walhalla’s celebration extending over four days and Langdon’s Emmanuel Evangelical Church holding their now annual community fireworks show.

Things to see in the area were spotlighted in July as well with features on Frost Fire Summer Theatre’s production of ‘Life could be a Dream’ and the Sarles American Legion Memorial monument.

Celebrating accomplishments were FCCLA advisor Amy Kram, who was named the National FCCLA Educated Adviser.

Local youth, Marcus Iverson, also had a lot to be proud of as he was named to the National Farmers Union Youth Advisory Council by his peers at the National Farmers Union All-States Leadership Camp. April Kratcha built upon her already excellent cheerleading abilities when she attended Cheer Hawaii USA. The invitational was a prep for those going into college cheerleading. The Methodist Youth Group also did some traveling during July. Kaylee Kemp, Dameon Bernstrom and Dustin Gilseth traveled to Kansas City with their adviser, Jolene Halldorson.

There was also good news in the business sector with Derak Mostoller announcing he would be serving the area with his electrician business. The Langdon Day Care Center found a new director in Jennifer Schroeder. Schroeder was previously a teacher and took over for long-time director Jackie Thom.

August was the time when harvest efforts started to get rolling. The month featured an in-depth look at industrial hemp and its potential for the area - from how to become licensed and the regulations for growing to the actual growing of the crop to the final stage of

It was during the last part of September that LASD pleaded with district voters to support the passage of a measure that would fund needed updates to the elementary school heating and air system and also provide security updates to both schools.

The Langdon Area FCCLA Chapter announced that they would continue to have the Snack Shop for the students of LAHS. The Snack Shop helps the school meet the USDA’s Smart Snack guidelines.

Another Langdon cheerleader, Breana Wagner, received national recognition as she made the UCA All-American cheer team. Wagner would go on to perform with other cheerleaders from around the country at the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade.

Helping local athletes, specifically in hockey, brought gaming to Sporty’s Bar and Grill.

The Langdon Hockey Boosters began raising money through blackjack and pigwheel at the local haunt in mid-September.

LbarP Equine Ranch was a feature feel-good story for the area as owner Leon Pederson explained why he brings his horses to area care centers, Maple Manor and Osnabrock Community Living Center (OCLC).

The OCLC welcomed a new Director of Nursing as Janie Schill joined the staff.

Salem Bible Church of Munich welcomed their new pastor, Don Barsness, and his wife, Marla, to town in September.

Also announcing a new endeavour was Abby Borchardt.

Borchardt began serving the area as a realtor for Greenberg Realty based in Grand Forks.

Cavalier County Memorial Hospital was awarded a grant to bring in state of the art x-ray equipment to better serve their patients. The equipment was installed and up and running by early September.

From meetings with North Dakota Human Services Department to meetings with Walsh and Pembina County, the decision to become the host county for the zone was made in midAugust.

The Northern Lights Arts Council brought the 1000 print summer to the Langdon area.

Kids were able to create their own stamp artwork during the event. There were four Langdon Area High School musicians who participated in the Northern Ambassadors of Music tour.

The vocalists were Lizzie Muhs and Kaydee Koistinen. The band had instrumentalists Raquel Bata, who plays the clarinet, and Hannah Lundeby with her baritone.

The teachers got their chance to shine with new teachers for area schools being introduced to the area. St. Alphonsus announced their new school administrator as being Langdon native Carrie Hope.

In September, the focus on schools continued. The Langdon Area Elementary School shared how the newly purchased LabLearner STEM Lab was bringing the science curriculum up-to-date. The schools also shared with the community their crisis plans which are based on A.L.I.C.E. Both Langdon Area School District (LASD) and Munich follow the program. St. Alphonsus also has an updated plan in place in the case of an emergency event.

Northern Valley Human Services Board meets for first time

By Melissa Anderson Republican Editor The Northern Valley Human Services (NVHS) board officially met for the first time since its creation. The NVHS is a zonal board overseeing the social services in Cavalier, Pembina, and Walsh counties as a result of the social service redesign bill that was passed last legislative session.

The first meeting was productive as board members present were Stanley Dick, David Zeis, Amy Kram, Janne Myrdal, Karen Anderson, Anne West, Manny Doyle, and Debra Fraser. Also present at the meeting were Cavalier and Pembina County Social Services director Jill Denault and Walsh County Social Services director Twila Novak.

The board voted to place Dick as the chair and Fraser as the vice-chair. Holly Fetsch was appointed secretary of the board.

The board set the appointments of office in a stagger pattern with Dick and Anderson holding three year terms; Fraser, West and Doyle have two year terms; Zeis, Myrdal, and Kram have one year terms.

The process of payment for bills was a focus for the new board. Denault presented the Agassiz Valley Human Service Zone operational procedures as a template for the NVHS. The

Acknowledging that this may change, the board agreed to have the zonal board meetings occur on the second Monday of the month at 9 a.m. with the location rotating between the three counties. The next meeting will be on February 10 at 9 a.m. in Cavalier.

The biggest discussion was set on the zonal director. Cavalier County HR Crystal Beggs explained to the board that there were no candidates to review as the state was still grading the applicants. The hope is to have a review of the candidates and begin interviewing in February.

The director must be hired prior to the March deadline. Denault and Novak will continue as cointerim directors.

By Melissa Anderson Mind your biscuits There is a lot going on in the world. I mean A LOT. Politics, geopolitics, climate/weather, markets, gossip, celebrity, royalty...anything that can be commented on or dissected is being covered and dissected.

It’s insane.

I have yet to figure out the thrall that commenting on a complete stranger’s life and life choices holds for people. Nothing that a stranger says should or will hold weight with another stranger. So for the masses to comment on a subject that they personally have zero involvement with, it’s weird.

Commenting on larger issues such as politics, geopolitics, climate, markets etc. That is more like what should be discussed. The macro instead of the micro. It is nice though when one of the micro makes epic

waves within their macro. I’m talking, of course, about that opening monologue of the Golden Globes made by Ricky Gervais. That was funny because it was true.

Celebrities in general have placed themselves in positions of being under a microscope so when their actions are called out for what they are, it’s fair. For the celebrities that decide being celebrity is not for them and step back, they deserve that option. This time I refer to the conniption occurring in regards to the recent decision made by that of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Public life isn’t working for them.

They asked to step back. Who cares?

Give up what comes with that public life and move on. I doubt they will struggle.

Voicing opinion is not, nor should it be, condemned. That is a right. What is not a right is to pick apart someone else’s life for your own entertainment. Mind your own biscuits.

Greenhouse within a greenhouse…

After getting a good response from last week’s article, here is more food for thought about greenhouses, no pun intended. There are several ways you can grow garden produce even in the northernmost communities of North Dakota like Pembina, Neche, Walhalla, Westhope, Sherwood, Portal, Crosby and the International Peace Garden. I don’t think anyone has ever tried this, at least not in North Dakota, and I’m not sure I want to spend the money to prove this theory would be effective, but what would happen if someone built a greenhouse within a greenhouse and then grew plants inside the smaller greenhouse?

I think about this a lot because on sunny winter days that could be as cold as 10 below zero, the temperature will often rise to 70 degrees in a passive solar greenhouse. That heat dissipates quickly after the sun goes down, but if some of that daytime heat from the sun could be trapped inside the smaller greenhouse, it wouldn’t get nearly as cold as it would inside the larger greenhouse.

Here’s an example. We all know how cold the wind is when it blows on a winter day. If you are inside a greenhouse, you are out of the wind but still have to deal with the ambient temperature sans wind chill.

Letter to the Editor: For the last decade artists in the music industry have glorified drug use without making a mention of the consequences that they really cause.

It went from glorifying drug dealing to glorifying the use of codeine, molly, weed, OxyContin, cocaine, you name it and it’s referenced in at least one of your favorite artists songs. In the past ten years there have been a number of drug overdose deaths in the industry. From Mac Miller to Lil Peep, Whitney Houston, Prince, Tom Petty, Juice World, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, and Rick James. With this I have noticed a ton of artists speaking out on the awareness of drugs and suicide. From Logic to Lacrae, 50 Cent, Macklemore, Common and Eminem. The drug crisis we are in has opened artists minds up to how influential there work can really be.

Juicy J made headlines for apologizing for promoting drug use. I hope it sets the tone for this decade to come because things need to make a change for the better and what better way than the music industry to start this amazing trend.

Upside Down Under protected inside of it, because you are technically, even further away from the wind.

A greenhouse is supposed to have two sheets of plastic, the other layer and an inner layer, both separated by just an inch or two to act as an insulator. If the smaller greenhouse was considerably smaller proportionately, that would act as additional insulation. A double passive solar concept would trap more heat because there would be less to escape from the inner greenhouse, thus the night temperature inside would drop far more slowly.

Thick, R insulation could be used on the north and northwest sides to prevent further cold from entering because of our prevailing northwest wind. That means supplemental heat would cost considerably less, even in the depth of winter, so it is possible that a moderate sized electric heater would do the trick inside the smaller greenhouse.

Still, another safeguard would be polycarbonate panels. In other words, if the inner greenhouse was built with “corrugated plastic,” it would trap more heat inside than a greenhouse would with traditional 6 millimeter plastic.

I’ve thought about this for a number of years because of something that happened in my own back yard. In 2008 we had a 12 x 18 foot greenhouse that was built in Israel from polycarbonate and rubber. It was often quite warm in there during sunny, winter days, so much so that I could work in a T-shirt and that greenhouse wasn’t passive solar. little greenhouse, I used some old glass cookware my wife no longer wanted. I placed it on the shelf on a black rubber mat and attempted to grow plants under the glass inside the polycarbonate. It worked until it got extremely cold. Then the plants froze. Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to electricity in that greenhouse, so was unable to protect them other than with sunlight.

So what would be the difference if that glass or “corrugated plastic” was much larger in size and was inside a traditional greenhouse?

Couple that with a hole in the ground to capture geothermal heat, and now all you need is lighting to circumvent the short days of winter. It would most likely function quite well if all the necessary precautions are taken and adhered to. It would certainly be a disciplined task. The downside is the price to make this happen. Although it would all be an one-time expense, except for the electricity, it would still cost a sizeable amount.

But as people continue to become more serious within our state’s boundaries about growing fresh produce and herbs, something like this could be the answer. The caveat is you can only grow certain items like lettuce, kale, spinach, onions, cabbage and carrots. You have to know what plants withstand cold better because they are the ones that will survive.

Interested growers could seek grants or money through the Agricultural Products and Utilization Commission (APUC) to offset the overall bill it would take to build such a structure.

NDAD program debuts for autism-related service gaps NDAD has launched a program to help families cope with service gaps for children and adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism Spectrum Assistance Program (ASAP) may assist with medical travel expenses and respite services when no other payment option is available for families through local, state or federal programs.

Qualifying individuals receive gas cards for out-of-town medical travel for appointments, including occupational, physical, speech/ language and behavioral therapies, and psychiatric appointments.

NDAD also may assist with up to eight hours per week of respite care expenses.

“We are excited to bring ASAP to North Dakota families,” said Kim Zeeb, NDAD’s client services representative in Fargo. “We hope that this new program will fill some gaps in services for people with autism.”

North Dakotans and individuals living in direct bordering state communities are encouraged to apply.

Obituaries Joy D. Koropatnicki

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, January 16, 2020, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon for Joy D. Koropatnicki, 86, of Langdon, who passed away January 12, 2020, at her home in Langdon. Burial will be in the spring in Leroy.

Joy Delaine Berger was born November 26, 1933, in Osnabrock, to Ingvald and Johanna (Pearl) Berger. She later moved to Crystal and worked at the café her mother owned where she met her husband, Mike. She and Michael Koropat-

nicki were married August 19, 1950, in St. Thomas. They lived in Backoo and started their family farm where they raised ten children. In 1977, they moved to Langdon. Her grandchildren wrote- “Grandma is beautiful, understanding, and the most beautiful human we have ever met, and we are so lucky to call her ours.”

Joy is survived by her sister, Carol Almond, of Edmore,; children: Fred (Stacey) of Mandan, Kahn (Jody) of Northwood, Frank (Karen) of Langdon, Daniel (Sue) of Jamestown, Rick (Vivian) of Portal, Freeman (Shannon) of New Town, and Kevin (Julie) of Plummer, ID; grandchildren: Travis, Tyler, Lynsee, Brittiany, Kenny, Ashley, Marla,

Courtney, Chantell, Summer, Natasha, Brianna, Dalton, Dusty, Chris, Misty, Tammy, Trevor, Alecia, Walker, Kasey, Lacey, Stacha, Gabriella; and several great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon for Beatrice Delvo, 84, of Langdon, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon. Burial will be in the spring at Calvary Cemetery in Langdon.

Beatrice Messner was born November 20, 1935, in Langdon, to Alex and Beatrice (Ohlheiser) Messner. She grew up and attended school in the Wales area. On October 21, 1959, she was united in marriage to Jerome Delvo. They farmed and raised their family on the Delvo home farm. Earlier in life, she worked at the ASCS office until she had her children. She also worked at the Langdon Creamery and was the director of the Senior Meals Program for over 25 years. She was a very genuine person with a spunky personality and a warm smile. She had a great love for her family and

the community. She was very active in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and was a member of altar society and Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed cooking, playing Bunco, and playing cards and visiting with her friends and family.

“To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,” (1 Corinthians 1:2-3, NRSV).

Did you catch that? “...To those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

This is written to any who follow Christ!

1 Corinthians is one of many letters written by Paul to churches in the first century. Like many of Paul’s other letters, the church which received it didn’t read it and then toss it or file it away. They thought it was so important that they saved it, made copies of it, and shared it with others.

What was so important about this letter? It was written to a congregation which was struggling with how to follow Christ. There were tensions between their culture and their beliefs. There were varied opinions on what it meant to be a follower of Christ. These were real problems which the Christians in Corinth struggled with and which Christians throughout the world have struggled with as well.

As Paul opens his letter to them, he began with words of love and appreciation: ”I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind...God is

faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,” (1 Corinthians 1:4,5,9, NRSV). 1 Corinthians begins like many hard conversations today in church communities—be they face to face, over the phone, in emails, or even social media chats—with simple praise and acknowledgment. And since Paul doesn’t begin immediately with criticism or judgment, but with love, it appears that the church in Corinth takes his words more to heart.

I’ve been a part of a number of congregations in my life, and more than one had its share of problems due to disagreements. Sometimes those disagreements were addressed better than other times.

Sometimes, we try not to address them at all, preferring to avoid them.

As I reflect on this passage, my thoughts go less to any specific church and more to our culture as a whole. It is no secret that our country seems very divided right now. There is pressure to choose left or right, A or B, with what feels like little room for negotiation or compromise. How can we disagree and still find room for conversation? How can we love one another – not only in our churches, as Christians – but in our nation, as Americans? How might we deal with our tensions so that perhaps – like Paul’s letters to Corinth – one day our communications might be looked at not as scripture but as respectful and helpful?

Well, we‘re back! Doesn‘t seem as if we went anywhere, and well, we didn‘t, but I am sure some of you did, Oklahoma. Our Christmas was great with family home, although, there were some missing. At the Gorge Gallery things are back to normal, whatever normal is. Around a dozen of us were present to visit, paint, move our displays and, best of all, enjoy a fine lunch brought by Bill Zeller. As you can tell by the photo that accompanies this article, it is once again moving time at the gallery. This gets to be a long process as we are never all here at the same time. Our first meeting of the year was moved back a week because our president had a doctor‘s appointment. Next week will be busy as we continue to move our art work, and we will have our meeting along with trying to get some painting done. Long, brutal winters inspires church Reprinted with permission from AG News Find a need and fill it. It may be one of the simplest truths for the Church to prayerfully pursue in order for individuals, communities, and the world to take note and give respect back to the Church.

But what do you do when the need seems beyond your ability to fill?

David and Emily Clason, who pastor Walhalla Assembly of God, and their church members recognized that their small community of around 900 needed a place for kids and adults to be active and have a comfortable place to meet, especially in winter.

“In North Dakota, winters can be a little bit longer,” David Clason says with a tinge of humor. “So, we spend a lot of time inside.”

Walhalla is located approximately five miles from the Canadian border and about 30 miles west of the Minnesota state line. In short, it’s cold — bitterly cold — for months at a time.

According to USA.com, the average annual temperature in Walhalla is 38.49 degrees (Fahrenheit) with wind speeds averaging over 20 mph during the coldest months (November through February). In comparison, the temperature average for Anchorage, Alaska, is 36.1 degrees, with average winds of roughly 5-11 mph during the coldest months.

But with only the school and a civic center (that is in growing need of repairs) available, the options for indoor activities are limited and the city didn’t seem to be in a position to build a new facility.

That’s when the church decided to do something unexpected.

On Sept. 8, the Walhalla AG broke ground on a 3,600-square-foot community activity center. The 56-by-60 foot addition will stand 18 feet tall and accommodate an elementarysized basketball/volleyball court, game room, classrooms in a partial second story, and provide needed storage area for the church.

“The court area will be of a durable, rubberized material to allow

greater versatility in its use,” Clason says. “And because it is attached to a portion of the church’s kitchen, we’ll be able to provide food options through a service window while still being able to serve those in the fellowship hall, when needed.”

The first phase of the building is already well underway, with Clason hoping to have the building enclosed before any significant snow fall occurs. During the winter months, Clason is looking to the skilled labor in his church to help put up insulation and drywall in order to help keep costs down.

“We are not going into debt to build it — we’re paying for the activity center as we go,” he explains.

“If we don’t have the funds to continue at a certain point, we’ll just stop and wait until we do have the money.”

The church paid $190,000 cash for the cost of the first stage of the project and has had enough come in to begin the second stage of the nearly $300,000 project . . . not too bad for a congregation that averages 30 to 35 people on Sundays, including kids.

Clason says that he’s seen God at work, providing finances for the building when they were needed, from both within his small congregation as well as outside of it.

“The goal of the facility is to minister to our community — we want it to be in use every day of the week, and not necessarily by the church,” Clason says. “We’re collecting ideas about ways we can open it every day, and as the building goes up, our kids, congregation, and community are getting more and more excited about it.”

Currently Clason hopes that the building can be completed and operational in the next 12 to 18 months.

“If this was just something for the church, we wouldn’t have moved forward with it,” he says. “But we’re meeting a real need in our community while at the same time opening the doors to sharing the gospel with people who otherwise may have never walked through our doors or responded to an invitation.”

Prairie Doc® Perspectives: The science behind understanding epidemics

North Dakota Community Foundation to host ND picnic in Ariz. on March 1 The North Dakota Community Foundation (NDCF) will be hosting the 53rd annual North Dakota Picnic at Red Mountain Park in Mesa, Arizona, on Sunday, March 1, 2020.

The event is a gathering of anyone with North Dakota ties living either permanently or part-time in Arizona. Last year’s picnic drew an estimated 2,000 people.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on March 1 at Red Mountain Park, 7745 E. Brown Road in Mesa. It will feature polka and oldies music, classic cars on display, and a variety of vendor booths. There will be food available for purchase. The cost to attend the picnic is $5 per person.

Cards boys lose first game of 2020 to Hatton-Northwood 68-58

The Langdon-Edmore-Munich boys basketball team had been cruising as of late winning five of their first six games with their only loss coming to Shiloh Christian on a buzzer beater. They hit a stretch in their schedule where their competition got tough in mid-January, starting with a home game versus Hatton-Northwood on January 10. The Thunder, who had upset second-ranked Hillsboro-Central Valley earlier in the week, came in and beat the sixth-ranked Cardinals 68-58. That loss puts the Cards record at 5-2 and also dropped them out of the top 10 in the latest Class B Boys Basketball Poll. The Cardinals played an equally tough Dakota Prairie team at home on January 16 then hosted Cavalier on the afternoon of January 18. The Cardinals open up their District 8 schedule in the week ahead, playing at Dunseith January 21 then entertaining Rolla in Munich on January 23.

Playing against Hatton-Northwood, the Cardinals fell behind early as the Thunder scored some easy

baskets to take a 15-5 lead after the first quarter. Langdon-Edmore-Munich missed their first nine attempts from the 3-point line before Ordale Morstad finally connected with two of them in the second quarter. But the Thunder's Kelby Azure had nine second quarter points to give H-N a 32-18 lead at halftime.

After trading buckets for the most of the third quarter, the Cardinals fell behind by 16 points in the fourth before they had a massive comeback. They exploded for 27 fourth quarter points with five shots from long distance, two from Simon Romfo and one each by Jackson Delvo, Jagger Worley and Grant Romfo. The Cardinals turned up the heat defensively and forced a number of turnovers to get within five points two different times, the last being at 63-58.

But the Thunder would get a huge 3-pointer from Parker Vagene after a blocked shot, and that would pave the way to their win. H-N also went 7 of 8 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Monday and Thursday we say "Munich, North Dakota, Hello!!"

One of the most fun parts of the winter sports schedule is when the Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals girls and boys basketball teams play regular season games at the Munich gym. And those two games are coming up in the week ahead, with the girls playing Rolette-Wolford on Jan. 20, and the boys hosting Rolla on Jan. 23. We will be there for both of them, and there are a number of fun things set up in Munich for both games. The Munich seventh grade class will have cakewalk fundraisers both nights after each game, and the Munich junior class is also running the concession stand for another fundraiser, so come to the games hungry. Also during each contest, a bake sale will be held for Cindy Martin for her fight against cancer, and the Cardinals basketball campers will be performing at halftime both nights. It's looks to be an enjoyable couple of days in the Land of Magic, so hopefully you can get to the gym, reminisce a little and cheer loudly.

Langdon Blades Junior Gold and Girls teams plan three home double headers Jan. 24-26 The hockey season is moving right along at Dakota Spirit Arena in Langdon, and the weekend of Jan. 24-26 looks to be a great chance for you to see both the junior gold and girls teams in person. They will be playing double headers on those days versus Crosby, Watford City and Richland. The girls will start each twin bill at 6 p.m. against Crosby on Jan. 24, 12 p.m. taking on the Oilers on Jan. 25, and 11am versus the Rangers on Jan. 26, with the

boys games immediately following on all three days. Both teams have been playing great hockey as of late, so take the opportunity to see them play live, as this is very rare when the teams play back-to-back, although we have seen more of that type of scheduling this year as opposed to any other. It should be a very fun weekend.

Snowmobile Safety Course coming to Langdon Jan. 20; Two big events coming in February We will close this week by talking up some snowmobiling. There is no school statewide on Jan. 20 with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, so a snowmobile safety course has been planned for that day. I will be held at the Langdon Masonic Hall on Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 20. This course is for anyone ages 10 and up, the cost is $20 and lunch will be served. For more information call Ben at 701-549-2444, or Jamie at 701-370-0496. This course is sponsored by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department, and the Moonlighters Snowmobile Club of Langdon. The Moonlighters will have their annual fundraiser coming Feb. 15 At the Hop Bar and Grill, which will talk up more as the date gets closer. Also mark the calendar for the North Dakota State Snowmobile Ride, held in Walhalla this year. The date for that is Feb. 1, and the hub site will be the Walhalla Inn. There is a rumor that North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will be attending this event, although details were still being worked out. The State Ride is sponsored by the Northeast Snowmobile Club Associtation, the Pembina Hills Trailriders and Riverside Welding. It's great to see so many people active and progressive in these clubs to bring these fantastic events to our area.

Lady Cards roll record to 10-0 with road wins at Stephen-Argyle, St. John

By JAKE KULLAND Republican Sports Writer Hoping to just keep their consistency going, the unbeaten Langdon-Edmore-Munich Cardinals girls basketball team continued a four game road trip that included a win at Stephen-Argyle 59-42 on January 9 then winning at St. John 7123 on January 14. With those two victories, the second-ranked Lady Cards are now a perfect 10-0 on the season, and after playing at North Star on January 17, they will host Rolette-Wolford in Munich on January 20 then meet up for a game with Hettinger-Scranton in Jamestown at 6:30 p.m. on January 25. Here are recaps of their last two games: Langdon-Edmore-Munich 59, Stephen-Argyle 42 In one of the more unique games on the Cardinals schedule this season, Langdon-Edmore-Munich traveled 90 miles east to play Stephen-Argyle. The game was unique in the fact that they played the game with Minnesota rules, which was two 18 minutes halves as opposed to four eight minutes quarters.

The second half would be the difference in this one as the Cards outscored the Storm 32-21 in the second half to secure the win. As it has been all season, defense was a big factor in the victory; the Lady Cards forced 31 S-A turnovers and held the Storm to just 29 shot attempts for the game.

Point guard Kaitlynn Scheer led all players in scoring with 19 points, and she was 4 for 4 from the 3-point line. Callie Ronningen got into double figures with 13 points as did Morgan Freije with 12. The Cardinals had 23 rebounds, with nine coming off the offensive glass. Ronningen had seven assists and four steals for the Cards, while Kaylee Lowery pulled down a team high

Langdon-Edmore-Munich 71, St. John 23 A huge start for the Cardinals in the first quarter would be the difference at St. John. All five LangdonEdmore-Munich starters scored in the first frame, led by Morgan Freije with eights points and Lexi Olson with six.

Leading 46-15 at the half, the Lady Cards would outscore the Woodchucks 25-8 in the second half. Freije would lead the team in scoring with 16 points for the game followed by 15 for Callie Ronnigen and 13 from Kaitlynn Scherr.

The Cardinals defense forced 26 St. John turnovers, and the Woodchucks were led by Kendra Prouty with 11 points. She was one of only three St. John players that got in the score book.

Tax commissioner reminds taxpayers of changes in farm residence tax exemption Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger reminds individual taxpayers who claim a farm residence property tax exemption of new eligibility guidelines as deadlines approach.

Recent legislation now requires those who qualify for the exemption to complete a Farm Residence Exemption Application with their county, as well as submit a total gross income statement in order to receive the exemption.

Some key aspects to the new guidelines include: • At least 66-percent of gross income must come from farming activities.

• The non-farm income limit is now calculated as part of the total

gross income. Previously, the limit was $40,000 of non-farm income.

The limit change means more people could qualify for the exemption.

For details on what is included in farm and non-farm gross income, see “Special Estimated Tax Rules for Farmers” in IRS Publication 225.

• The gross income (farm and non-farm) must include a spouse’s gross income.

• The application form must be completed by Feb. 1, 2020.

• The exemption must be renewed every year, which requires submission of a new application and statement of income each year.

Projected crop profits for 2020 vary by region and crop The North Dakota State University Extension projected crop budgets for 2020 are now available for the state’s producers, says Ron Haugen, NDSU Extension farm management specialist.

The 2020 projected profits vary widely by region and crop.

“The budgets are guides for large multi-county regions,” says Haugen. “Returns and costs can vary considerably between producers within a region. Also, the budgets estimate returns to labor and management with no consideration of price and yield variability or risk. A perfect comparison of crops is not achieved because different levels of labor and management, and risk exist.”

Hard red spring wheat projects negative returns to labor and management in all regions of North Dakota except the northeast which shows an $11 per acre profit. Hard red spring wheat losses range from $1 to $35 per acre.

Soybeans project positive returns to labor and management in all but two regions. There is a projected loss of $14 and $7 per acre in the north Red River valley and northeastern regions respectfully.

The rest of the state’s regions show positive returns ranging from $7 per acre in the northwest to $37 per acre in the southeastern region.

Corn projects losses from $2 to $21 per acre for five regions and positive returns for the other four regions from $1 per acre in the south

Red River valley to $33 per acre in the southeastern region.

Malting barley shows slight losses in the northwestern and southwestern regions and larger loess in the Red River Valley regions.

The losses in the valley regions are largely due to higher land costs.

Oil sunflowers project a profit in all regions but the north Red River valley ($18/acre loss) and the southeastern region ($25/acre loss).

The positive return ranges from $10 per acre in the south Red River valley to $32 per acre in the east-central region.

Canola projected the largest negative returns in the southeastern region ($50 loss per acre) to the highest positive return in the northcentral region ($31 profit per acre).

“Generally, for most crops, the projected total costs per acre were slightly higher than last year’s projections,” says Haugen. “Fertilizer expense was slightly lower. Seed, chemicals, and insurance costs were generally flat. Fuel, lube and repairs were slightly higher. Crop land rents for most regions were flat.”

NDSU Extension has been proactive in trying to combat the spread of Palmer amaranth

Palmer amaranth plants can reach 6 to 8 feet tall, and a single plant can produce up to 1 million seeds. (NDSU photo) Millet was in demand in North Dakota in 2019 as a feed for livestock and as a cover crop.

It also was a target for Palmer amaranth, a very aggressive, difficult-to-control weed found in North Dakota for the first time in 2018. After Palmer amaranth was confirmed in multiple millet fields in Grant and Emmons counties in 2019, North Dakota State University Extension weed specialist Joe Ikley urged producers with millet fields to scout them for the troublesome weed.

That timely warning helped at least one Emmons County producer.

“He checked his millet fields after hearing about the issue and indeed found Palmer amaranth in his millet field,” Ikley says. “That infestation may have gone unnoticed without the Extension efforts to raise awareness, and the farmer was very thankful.”

Knowing the threat Palmer amaranth poses to crops, Extension agents and specialists began alerting producers about Palmer amaranth even before it was discovered in North Dakota. It can grow 2 to 3 inches per day in optimum conditions. The plants can reach 6 to 8 feet tall, and a single plant can produce up to 1 million seeds.

Palmer amaranth also is hard to control because it is very prone to being resistant to herbicides. In addition, it can be difficult to identify because it resembles redroot pigweed, smooth pigweed and waterhemp.

To help producers identify and eliminate any Palmer amaranth on their land, Extension agents and specialists developed a website (https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/palmeramaranth), posters and handouts with photos to help distinguish it from other plants, and provided

some recommendations for chemical control. Their key message is to detect the weed early, before it develops seeds, pull out the plants and destroy them by burying them deeply or burning them.

“Don’t let anything go to seed,” advises Extension weed specialist Brian Jenks. “It’s much easier to pull 100 plants than to deal with millions of seeds next year.”

Agents spread the word about Palmer amaranth in a number of ways.

In McIntosh County, the North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) and County Weed Board sent letters that included Extension information to all landowners.

“In 2019, we have continued talking to producers, have sent emails and made Facebook posts, as well as hanging up posters in the area,” says Crystal Schaunaman, Extension’s agriculture and natural resources agent in the county. “I have also talked about how to identify it at various meetings such as the Tri-County Plot Tour and several meetings in January/February, and looked at many pictures of suspect plants which have been texted to me.”

In neighboring LaMoure County, Extension agriculture and natural resources agent Julianne Racine has scouted fields with agronomists and on her own.

“Earlier in the growing season, I visited different ag businesses and gathering spots, speaking with managers and community members about identifying characteristics and scouting their own fields,” she says. “Everyone was left with handouts and posters. I also try to stress that people should call us or their weed board. As well, I put articles in the paper and soil conservation newsletter reminding people to keep vigilant.”

Extension efforts are similar in other counties.

“I have made efforts to make producers more aware of the problem through news columns, radio interviews, crop meetings, pesticide trainings and personal conversations,” says Sheldon Gerhardt, the agriculture and natural resources agent in Logan County. “At my pesticide training, I have used a problem-based learning presentation where producers need to discuss how they will manage the potential problem on their farm.”

Emily Trzpuc, the agriculture and natural resources agent in Emmons County, has been helping producers identify suspicious plants and educating them on where to look for Palmer amaranth.

“Producers should be sure to get out and walk their fields to look for this weed since crop height will likely match that of the mature Palmer amaranth that could be in the field,” she says. “If producers are suspicious of any pigweed species

they encounter in their fields, they should contact their local Extension agent or their county weed board officer,” she adds. “From there, we can help them get their plant identified by our NDSU Extension weed specialists or through genetic testing.”

A DNA-based assay the National Agricultural Genotyping Center in Fargo developed in 2019 has been very helpful in determining whether weeds producers find actually are Palmer amaranth, according to Tom Peters, Extension sugarbeet agronomist and weed control specialist at NDSU and the University of Minnesota.

“The assay provides us with a very quick way to follow up on leads,” he says.

He notes that NDSU Extension’s efforts to educate producers about Palmer amaranth is a partnership with the NDDA. The department has a map at https://www. nd.gov/ndda/sites/default/files/ PalmerMap_919v2.pdf that shows where the weed has been found in the state.

Extension hosted a training meeting in December to provide new agents and agents with less weed management experience with an opportunity to learn more about Palmer amaranth.

“The outcome of the meeting will be talking points and training materials agents will disseminate in their winter producer meetings,” Peters says.

Palmer amaranth has been found in eight of North Dakota’s 53 counties.

“We believe the new counties in 2019 (Grant, Emmons, Morton) were due primarily to contaminated millet seed,” Jenks says.

More Palmer amaranth was found this year in two counties where it was spotted in 2018.

“However, these fields are being monitored and I think the farmers are trying to be vigilant and not let plants go to seed, so I am hopeful that what was found in 2018 will not become a huge problem in the future,” Jenks says.

“Without the efforts of Extension, I have no doubt that Palmer amaranth infestations would be much more widespread,” he adds. “People know about Palmer amaranth primarily due to our education efforts. People are aware and looking for it. People also appreciate us going to the sites, teaching them about the plants and discussing future options.”

Falls are one of the most frequent causes of injuries in every workplace. The farm is no exception.

Kent McGuire, CFAES Safety and Health Coordinator at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Science, says falls are often caused by slips or trips. Losing traction on a surface can lead to imbalance that results in a fall. Tripping over objects or uneven surfaces may also result in a fall. In 20% of all falls, injuries occur to more than one area of the body.

“Sprains, strains, bruises, fractures and concussions are the most common types of injuries incurred by a fall,” McGuire says. “There are two types of falls. We can fall from

the same level or from an elevated height. Most frequently, when people fall from the same level, injuries are less severe than when they fall from an elevated height. As they say, it’s not the fall that does the damage. It’s the abrupt stop.”

Falls occurring on the farm are most frequently from the same level. Triggers for the falls range from loose gravel, loose hay, muddy conditions, manure in feedlots, etc.

When a farmer falls from an elevated level, 60% of the time they are 10 feet or less above the walk/ work surface.

“You don’t have to fall a long way to sustain severe injuries,” McGuire says. “It can be as little as four or six feet. These kinds of falls often occur from hay mows or barn lofts. Farmers are also at risk of falling into below-ground pits or open trench loading docks. Severe injuries can also occur when a farmer falls from equipment.”

Today’s farms feature platforms and walking surfaces, ladders and steps. Any of these areas can be the site of a fall.

Changing weather conditions, especially snowy and/or icy conditions, can trigger a fall on the farm.

“Some key ways to prevent slips, trips and falls in either wet weather or cold and icy conditions include use of adequate footwear,” McGuire says. “That should include good tread to provide traction.”

Footwear in wet or mucky conditions should be waterproof. All footwear should fit well and be comfortable.

“If you’re walking on ice, take short steps or shuffle along to ensure you maintain your balance,” McGuire says. “And keep your hands out of your pockets. Often, the most severe injuries in icy conditions occur because the person couldn’t get their hands out of their pocket fast enough to break their fall.”

When walking on icy or slippery surfaces, hand rails, grab bars or even a fence line can help prevent slipping or tripping. Be mindful of where sidewalks are and avoid walking on them if they are ice covered to reduce the potential for falling.

Good housekeeping is a key safety element to reducing the potential for falling. Walk areas and welltraveled paths should always be clear of any debris, trash, tools, etc.

“Be aware of any changes in elevation in your work area that could cause you to trip,” McGuire says.

“The thing that comes to mind here is older barns. It’s not unusual to see uneven surfaces inside them. Elevation changes of even one inch can cause us to trip. Be aware of where those surfaces are. Understand that in poor lighting conditions depth perception can be impaired and marking these surfaces can make the area safer.”

Langdon City Commission Regular Meeting Monday, January 13, 2019 at 6 p.m.

Additions to Agenda: Correspondence: Department Reports: Street – J. Hiller has been pushing snow and doing some maintenance on the loaders.

Water – J. Busse reported on the water break last week; he scraped the ice off the street as much as possible. He has also been getting yearly reports done for the State.

Sanitation – T. Beauchamp presented the board with an annual report that will be reported to the State. Tom will also be attending an operator’s recertification class the end of January.

Activity Center – C. Graber re-

ported things are going well. They have been finding some different equipment in storage and have been putting it out for use. There have also been some new memberships purchased since the new pricing.

Fire – No report.

Police – G. Fetsch presented the commission a yearend report and discussed some of the changes that they are making over at the Sheriff’s Office.

Auditor Report – R. Hoffarth reported the 2019 4th quarter reports are finished and the W2’s are out.

Hoffarth discussed with just a quick look at the Street Lights - Revenue and Expenses we were around $4300.00 in the red. This may need to be increased to cover expenses. A more detailed report will be provided at next meeting. It was also reported that every year we purchase pet licenses and only sell about 6 of them; this has been a struggle for years; it is advised to get your pet licensed every year for the benefit of your pet.

Unfinished Business: Moore EngineeringPhase 1 - Sewer, Water, Storm Water Improvements – RD Project (Quam Construction) No update.

Among the more interesting queries for bits and pieces of local and family history was a letter from a granddaughter of a prominent Langdon family from pioneering days. She had been going through some papers of her mother’s and found her mother had two years with no attendance listed for her schooling. Other relatives had suggested that since the Langdon school had burned, taking some or many records with it, her question asked about the reason why there was “no school in 1917 and 1918”.

To the best of my knowledge, which could be missing some important facts, the school in Langdon has operated every year since 1886 to the present. In the early days the school was open when people like E. J. Fox and Joseph Power were available to teach and were hired “for a term” which might have been a three-month period. Fox started his first term in

April, not September, and considering North Dakota winters, even in pre-statehood years, this was understandable. The Children’s Blizzard in the 1880s, which caused the death of many children in Dakota Territory, made the choice of summer over winter school days a wise one. However, “town schools” where children lived closer to the buildings developed in most communities by the 1890s.

Many rural schools continued to be summer schools until the advent of school buses closed their districts.

Yes, the school at Langdon did burn, but the year of that fire was 1911, not 1917 or 1918. One of the entertaining stories of that momentous fire was passed on to me with great laughter by the older sisters in the Kelland family who often visited our home since they were friends of my aunts. They remembered their younger brother, Charlie, bouncing into their bedroom early one morning with the news that the school had burned during the night and classes for that day were called off. To Charlie this was a day of vacation. He might have changed his mind a few days later when classes re-

sumed in the Opera House (later the Masonic Temple), the earlier Masonic Temple (later a creamery), above the firehall, in church basements and in empty store buildings. School did not take a lengthy vacation, and there were several graduates in the Class of 1911 when graduation time came around. The new building carried a date of 1912, which is the date it was completed.

The letter writer suggested that the school might have been closed in 1917 and 1918 due to the war or because the teachers might have been drafted.

In replying I could tell her that other members of her mother’s family were in school at Langdon in 1918 because a brother had graduated that year, and her mother was listed with the class of 1926. Being born in 1908, her mother would have been the average age in 1926 to graduate from high school.

She also suggested maybe parents in 1917-1918 had decided to homeschool their children. My guess is that homeschooling for regular students was unheard of in North Dakota until around 1990 when some churches began advocating the practice. Cath-

schools had some features the Langdon school did not – a closet library, a noon hour where you ate at your desk and, believe it or not, a merrygo-round on the playground.

The several generations who have attended school in Langdon all have some entertaining tales to tell, and one that someone had passed on to this particular letter writer was about coming to Langdon for high school and finding a place to room and board. Before school buses this was a necessary situation for many teenagers. Today there are any number of local grandparents who can tell you stories about the places they lived while attending high school.

Renting rooms to students of all ages began back in the 1890s and early 1900s. Some of the “renters” were summer school teachers who wanted to take high school or even college courses from Professor Thomas Sheehan (later with the state Department of Education). Others were students those teachers in training felt would benefit from the more extensive curriculum in the town schools. My oldest aunt was about eight when she began that process. Her country school teacher had been hired to teach in Langdon and helped her find a home where she could work and go to school during the day unless the family where she stayed needed her during the day as well. After three years in third grade, not because she was not bright enough to keep up with the work but because she “missed too much school”, she decided to just work full-time and gave up on passing to fourth grade. The people she had stayed with preferred a full-time employee, and in that capacity, she got more than a bed and meals. In her 90s she was still reading and becoming self-educated.

Trying to answer her questions was a glimpse of the many ups and downs of education down through the years. Some might call it a rollercoaster ride. By the way, if you want records for grand or great-grandparents, a good place to start searching is with the school they attended.

Some high schools may have records and share with proper identification.

When working as county superintendent I learned many schools did not keep their records or sent them to surrounding schools when they closed.

Some told me they had disposed of the records – that might not have been a true answer, but it was their response. If the school no longer exists, a few records may be warehoused in Bismarck, but others are difficult to locate.

olic parochial schools had existed for many years before that time, and the early homeschool advocates were, in general, not affiliated with Catholic congregations. However, when I was a child and would suspect for years before that time, there were families with a special needs child who was kept at home and whatever education that child had was unsupervised homeschooling. When remedial and special education classes developed in the 1960s a gradual shift was made towards mainstreaming all children into a classroom situation. When I first began teaching in Colorado, parents who had a child with hearing or vision problems would beg to have their child allowed in public school and were often denied that request.

Jefferson County (a large and often considered very modern district) had one building for all special needs children which in those days included even minor or temporary physical disabilities such as a child with crutches or a cast on their leg.

Langdon was a bit more liberal because people my age remember a boy with a cast and crutches who would literally fly up and down the many levels of stairs in the old Langdon Public School arriving ahead of those of us who had only two legs to climb the stairs.

Around the time of Langdon’s Centennial someone found a copy of the school board minutes from the 1917-1918 era and brought them to the Cavalier County Library where I had a chance to read some of them.

The school was closed during the flu epidemic of that era for a short time.

My memory is roughly from Thanksgiving until after New Year’s. At the time local churches were also closed, and many community events discontinued to avoid spreading the flu which eventually seemed to find each home in the area.

As an elementary student during World War II I do remember a time when or two shipments of coal for the school did not arrive. If the delay was short, we wore winter coats and mittens in class. In what might have been 1940-41 we had a longer vacation, and I was sent to the farm to stay with relatives. It was a muddy spring, and when the two pre-school cousins I was to watch and myself became stuck in a muddy field, my aunt called the school board member next door and said “come and get this kid and take her to school” so I spent a week or so in Hay #3, taught at that time by Elsie Schrader. The school had more children than desks so most of us sat with a friend. It was quite an enjoyable experience since country
