Herzog, Gold top two in primary Pair headed for runoff in November general election THE PILOT GOLD BEACH — Based on unofficial returns in the Oregon primary Tuesday, challenger John Herzog and incumbent Sue Gold were the top two vote-getters in the Curry County Commissioner, Position 2 race.

Herzog (37.82 percent) leads Gold (37.68) by 10 votes. Herzog has 2,863 votes. Shelia Megson (24.11 percent) is third with 1,825 votes. Herzog’s lead was 18 votes when the first round of results was posted shortly after polls closed. If no candidate in the com-

missioner’s race gets more than 50 percent of the votes, the top two vote-getters will face each other in the November general election. Nearly every other local race on the ballot featured candidates running unopposed — Curry County Commissioner, Position 3 Court

Brookings-Harbor and Gold Beach high schools have put together graduation ceremonies that involve social distancing, vehicles, parades and live streaming. GBHS has scheduled its Graduation Parade and Socially Distanced Commencement Ceremony for 7 p.m. on June 5. BHHS is having its event for 2 p.m. on June 13. Letters have been sent out to graduating seniors of the high schools outlining what will be happening. “We know this has been a challenging time and our hearts go out to you and your families for the special experiences that you have lost,” wrote BHHS Principal DeAnne Varitek. “We have done our best to plan some memorable events that will demonstrate how important you are to us and to invite the community to join with us in honoring the Class of 2020.” On May 29, Brookings-Harbor High School will hold a cap and gown drive-thru pick-up party from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. On that day, students or parents can drive by the front of the school and a BHHS staffer will deliver caps and gowns, graduation cords, yearbooks, and senior announcements to the senior’s car. Local Memorial Day ceremony canceled Taking direction from the governor and the state’s VFW commander, Brookings VFW Post 966 Commander Rick Bremer said they will not be having a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 25. Bremer added that instead of canceling it, they are going to have a ceremony when the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted enough to allow for larger gatherings. Bremer said he knows people in the community will be disappointed, as he is, but he just can’t risk it and feels it is prudent to follow the state VFW commander’s recommendations. On Monday around 12:10 p.m. there will be a flyover by Oregon Air National Guard. The flyovers have been coordinated as a part of OPERATION: AMERICAN RESOLVE to salute those at the forefront of the COVID-19 response and will be done in conjunction with regularly scheduled training.These flyovers will incur no additional cost to taxpayers and are done in lieu of regularly

so much of Highway 101. It’s more winding through residential and past some of the senior centers,” Haggerty said. “Seaview always hosts an annual park and greet. They get to see the cars. They really enjoy it. I hope the kids can come out, too.” The cruise will then skirt U.S. Highway 101 and instead head south on Lake Earl Drive. The cruise then takes a similar meandering route through Crescent City ending at Battery Point. Wilkinson said the cruise is free, but she’s asking for donations for the Brookings and Crescent City food banks. Both she and Haggerty emphasized this is not a protest cruise.

“This is not a political statement,” Wilkinson said. “So, no banners, just American flags just spreading love.” Haggerty said as an unsanctioned cruise, streets will not be blocked off, lights will not be held for stragglers. He added anyone can participate in their family car. “This is going to be fun. A lot of us put cars in the Azalea show with flags, red white and blue. We encourage that. And if you don’t have a classic car and want to participate, you can fall in at the end of the cruise,” Haggerty said. DEAR ABBY: A few weeks ago, my husband and I had what I thought was a minor conflict, from which I walked away to avoid escalation. I could hear him continuing to rant, so I pulled up the security camera on my phone and watched and listened as he continued to say horrible things for an hour or more. He called me a disgusting blob, said there is nothing appealing about me, and I should go out in the yard and kill myself just like my father did. The words were so painful that I began to sob uncontrollably and screamed in anguish. He never came to console me. In fact, he told me to “shut up.” I’m not a crier, typically, so his blatant disregard for the effect his words had on me raises another level of concern. We have since discussed the event, and his first defense was to say he didn’t know I could hear him. Meanwhile, I have to live with the fact that I’m married to a man who has such a low opinion of me that he thinks I should kill myself. I have no family, and I’m hesitant to upend a life that is finally stable after a chaotic childhood and early adulthood. My husband isn’t

Students will drive north through the school parking lot, pausing in front of the high school steps to be announced, filmed (live stream), and photographed receiving their diploma. After students have received their diploma, they will continue north through the parking lot, turn left and proceed behind the stadium, and drive down onto the football field to their marked location. There, families and graduates will wait in their designated lo-

cation with balloons, listening to the announcements of their classmates and honking, cheering until all graduates are on the field. On June 13, in alignment with current guidance from the state, BHHS plans to hold a graduation ceremony on school grounds. The ceremony will be broadcasted while students and families watch in a designated lineup from the comfort of their cars. When they reach the portion of the ceremony where students receive their diplomas, each family will drive up to the stage, exit their vehicles, and seniors will march across the stage. Seniors will receive their diploma shields as they normally would and we will provide a photographer who will post digital photos free of charge. “We highly encourage families to decorate personal automobiles and then participate in a procession that will travel a parade route around the schools and through town following the ceremony. May 3, 1985 – May 16, 2020

ryan Matthew Purdue was the son of Torrea L. Hall (& husband Mike) of Brookings and Matthew Lyle Purdue of Coos Bay. While growing up, Bryan loved everything active. He played baseball, basketball, loved everything water and snow: skiing, tubing & boarding. Bryan loved adventures. With Tata & Phil he learned to identify birds and swam in icy high mountain lakes. He learned to snowshoe on Mount Shasta with his Papa Dale. He climbed to the rim of Mt. St. Helens with his cousin Noah. In sixth grade Mr. “D’s” (Davidson’s) class, Bryan learned to juggle and ride his unicycle simultaneously. During his sophomore year at Brookings-Harbor, Bryan met the love of his life, Chelsey. Together they shared many adventures camping and fishing. They moved to Portland and got engaged. Bryan was working in construction, often working several stories high in a lift or boom, caulking seams or joints. After their son Tyson was born, they moved to Bend.

January 14, 1941 - April 11, 2020

They loved mountains and lakes and outdoor activities. Five years later their daughter Tyler was born. Bryan loved his children more than anything. August 2009 Bryan made a terrible mistake: choosing to not put his motorcycle helmet on – because “he was only going a short distance”. But the front tire of his motorcycle hit the edge of pavement, flipping Bryan over the handlebars. He suffered a severe traumatic brain injury which required surgery and eight weeks of intensive rehab. Bryan lost his eyesight and had to re-learn how to walk, feed himself and get dressed. Because of this, Bryan’s hobbies changed. He loved cooking and called himself the “Sous Chef”. He loved gardening and growing chili peppers and making salsa. Bryan loved all animals and had hoped to get his own guide dog one day. He will be missed. Bryan was preceded in death by his brother Tyler (2006). Services will be planned at a later date. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.

Here are some of her singular accomplishments: She gave a solo piano recital at Carnegie Hall and passed the California bar examination within a 12-month period. She studied piano for seven years with European concert artist Egon Petri, starting as a young teenager. She became eligible to take the bar exam through Law Office Study; the way lawyers were trained before law schools appeared. She chaired the California Bar’s Board of Legal Specialization and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Board of Trial Advocacy. She became a regular church organist at the age of five and provided musical leadership in Lutheran churches for over seventy years. She was a jazz big band pianist who performed for

and carpentry. Carl spent most of his life in the coastal communities of Coquille, Gold Beach and Brookings. Arrangements were made for cremation at Coos Bay Chapel. No funeral is planned at this time.

over twenty years with the Elby Coy Orchestra and played several gigs with Louie Bellson. She led choirs for over fifty years in several Bay Area Lutheran churches, including one that held concerts featuring jazzy interpretations of African-American spirituals. She could play a piece like Ravel’s “Bolero” with her left-hand playing piano and her right-hand sometimes playing bell and percussive instruments. She was named a Northern California Super Lawyer twelve times by her peers in the workers’ compensation specialty. Alice was born in Klamath Falls, OR on January 14, 1941. Her parents, Carl and Ruth Wildermuth, were a finished carpenter/ labor leader and a professional tailor. They were devoted to their talented daughter and arranged for her to study with a major international artist. She learned from them and their shared Christian heritage a passion for social and economic justice, clear benchmarks in many legal issues including resolving workers’ comp cases in ways that were fair to injured workers. Both parents were skilled artists — her father in furniture making, and her mother in tailoring, making much clothing for her daughter ranging from concert dresses to power lawyer suits. Alice relished in the Swedish- and German-American heritages of her folks, noting how controversial the mar-

riage was in the 1920’s Northwest among two ethnically different types of Lutherans. She was married for over fifty-one years to Robert “Silky” O’Sullivan, whose earlier careers in politics and media were followed later in life by dual vocations as a high school teacher and pastor. They met when both were church staff in Burlingame,CA — she as organist and he as youth director, but the romance only started when they learned of each other’s passion for justice for farmworkers and other oppressed groups. Her husband says, “she was a wonderful whirlwind full of music, compassion and love, always celebrating the glory of life and the dignity of all creatures.” She loved nature, especially as found in Hawaii and the Oregon coast, where for years every fall she picked huckleberries with her mother while her father fished for salmon. Her love of gardening was a major factor in moving to Oregon during the California drought after living 46 years in Oakland. Imagine how blessed she felt when she and her husband could acquire a property in a wetter clime developed by a master gardener and nurseryman — with its own well! The O’Sullivans had no children but found much delight in seven German Shepherds over the years. Robert now lives with three on the garden property in Brookings that Alice loved.

Alice is survived by her husband and several relatives, including Anneli Blomberg (Sweden), Daryl Wildermuth and Elnora Wildermuth (both in the state of Washington). She attended Downey High School (Modesto, CA), Modesto Junior College, San Francisco State and Golden Gate University School of Law. The daughter of a Carpenters’ union business agent, she was proudly a member of the Office and Professional Employees Union and the American Federation of Musicians. She was supportive of many organizations that favored human and environment justice. She was a frequent guest, occasional host and avid supporter of KALW-FM’s “Your Legal Rights” program heard statewide on public radio stations. Plans for memorial events will be made once the western states are no longer locked down. Letters to the Editor PTSD and Suicide: A link to consider during June Editor: You’ve probably all heard about PTSD as it relates to the experience of combat veterans. What is not as widely known is that PTSD can affect anyone, even children. During the month of June, which is PTSD Awareness Month, I wanted to shed a bit of light on how other victims are affected and the resources that are available to them in Curry County. Natural disasters and large scale health concerns like COVID-19, vehicle accidents, sexual and other assaults and combat can all be sources of PTSD. Victims and survivors of these events can relive the trauma over and over again. When you have PTSD, you may have difficulty feeling safe. You may feel general anxiety. You may lose sleep from traumatic events constantly replaying in your mind. You may be haunted by the feeling that you did not do enough to help end a dangerous or traumatic situation that someone else faced. You may want to be alone because you feel like no one can understand the feelings or numbness that a traumatic event has brought on. However it affects you, please know that there are people in our community who understand and that you are not alone. The National Center for PTSD believes there is a link between PTSD and suicide. Every death is tragic but suicide shakes families and communities to the core. If you or a loved one is affected by PTSD, please help the Curry County Suicide Awareness and Prevention Council make a difference by spreading the word about these available resources. Thank you to Bill Hamilton Editor: I am writing this letter to recognize the service of Bill Hamilton who recently retired from the Brookings City Council after eight years of dedicated service. Bill continues to serve his community through the Elks Lodge, Lions Club, Safety City, Boy Scouts, Curry Public Transit and church. What is particularly remarkable is that Bill has and continues to serve his community despite a debilitating illness that has impacted his motor skills and confined him to a wheelchair for many years. While his mobility may be limited, his dedication and enthusiasm for public service are limitless. Bill has always found the right niche to serve within his organization and community. All the while serving as a strong advocate for the disabled, he is equally an advocate for self-reliance. Bill served as a volunteer firefighter soon after relocating to Brookings from Fort Bragg some years ago. He was a healthy, strong man then. He is a strong and dedicated man today. I knew Bill and his mother years before Carolyn and I relocated to Brookings some 14 years ago. He was a Boy Scout in Fort Bragg where I served as a Scout leader. He and his mom owned and operated a motel there. I am pleased to have continued our friendship years later in Brookings. I always found Bill to be a thoughtful and active contributor to the policy discussion as a City Councilor. He brought the mixed perspectives of many Brookings citizens to the table. Thank you Bill. He was uncooperative and refused tests, so a blood draw warrant was obtained, after which he was transported to jail. At 5:27 p.m., a report of a burglar in the 97900 block of West Lenham Lane. At 9:04 p.m., a transient was advised he was trespassing on South Coast Lumber property at 885 Railroad Street and moved along. Obituaries Lois Verna Petty Knutsen

January 1, 1925 – March 20, 2020

ois Verna Petty Knutsen was born January 1, 1925 in Andalusia, Alabama, the youngest of seven children, and passed away March 20, 2020 in Brookings, Oregon, at age 95. She lived 70 years on Knutsen Lane in Smith River, CA, until the last three years of her life. At age 92 she gave up her driver’s license and moved to assisted living at Addie Meedom House in Crescent City, CA. After breaking her hip, she relocated for several weeks to her final residence, Seaview Bright Creek in Brookings, OR. Lois married Karl Knutsen in Collegedale, Tennessee in 1945, following his return from serving in England during WWII. They moved to Grants Pass, OR, Karl’s hometown, where Karl and his Dad built wooden fishing boats for lake resorts in Oregon. Lois enjoyed living in the Northwest and in 1947, with their infant daughter Jeanne, she and Karl moved to Brookings, OR to begin farming Easter lilies. A second daughter, Judy, was born in 1950. Soon they

located land in Smith River, CA and moved there in 1951, building a new home, establishing their lily farm and continuing Karl’s boat building business. 1955 brought their third little girl, Janice, to the family. Lois began her education to become a teacher before her marriage so with summer schools and evening classes at Southern Oregon College, in 1959 she was hired by School District 17C in Brookings, OR and began teaching library classes at Azalea School. For 25 years every student had a class in her library. She and her good friend Marge Itzen sometimes kept score for the 7th & 8th grade boy’s basketball teams. She loved those memories of kids and staff and carried them with her, always enjoying seeing faces of her former students around Brookings. As her own daughters were growing up, she and Karl were very active camping and water skiing (she loved driving the boat), often with groups of their friends. Later lots of camping and fishing included their grandchildren. They usually had an RV that kids could count on in cold or wet weather. Several summers Lois and Karl enjoyed living in their RV at Diamond Lake Resort, where Karl spent time repairing some of their rental boats he had made. Lois and Karl both enjoyed traveling and after their retirement spent months at a time traveling the U.S., visiting every state

except Hawaii and also cruising to Alaska. They visited friends and many of Lois’ six brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. They especially loved their friends, Noel and Robbie Billups as traveling companions. Lois trusted the Lord and experienced His love and leading in her life as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian since early childhood. She and Karl believed and lived these values and passed them on to their family. Lois loved the messages, music and her Crescent City church family. After 65 years of marriage, Karl passed away in 2010 and Lois’ life became even more focused on her family. She was able to enjoy visits, photos and videos especially of her great grandchildren. She was much loved by her surviving family: Daughters: Jeanne and husband Jerry McCamman of Crescent City, CA; Judy Woods of Medford, OR; Janice and husband Dwight Winslow of Smith River, CA; Grandchildren: Jeffrey McCamman, Joey and wife Michal McCamman, Kristen Winslow VanRaden and husband Robert; Karly Winslow Baker and husband Brian; Great grandchildren: Ian McCamman, Rhys McCamman, & Tobin McCamman; Levi VanRaden & Annalise VanRaden; Ellie Baker, Emma Baker & Eamon Baker. Plans for a celebration of her life are postponed due to the Covid restrictions.

Michael (Mike) Mervin Winn May 17, 1959 - May 10, 2020

ichael (Mike) Mervin Winn, age 60, passed away Sunday May 10, 2020. He was born on May 17, 1959, in Le Grande, Oregon. He lived most of his life in northern CA and the Oregon Coast. He moved to be closer to his son in Brookings, OR in 2019 and was there for a year prior to his passing. Mike was the son of Melvin and Gerrie Winn and had 4 sisters Wanda, Jan, Debbie, and Julie as well as a brother, Steve.

Mike is survived by his sister; Julie, her husband Darryl, four children; Christopher and his wife Nicole, Jennifer and her husband Damien, Kamille, and Derick and his wife Ashly, nephews; Jarrod and Marcus, nieces; Jessica, Mariah, and Dakota, and six grandchildren; Austin, Cain, Mikey, Kaleb, Lillian, and Kaylee. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, and other loving relatives. Mike graduated when he was 17 and he went on and married his first wife, Cynthia and had two children, then married his second wife Suzanne and had two more children. He was very passionate about culinary arts and worked for many years as a Chef. He was a country man, true to his Native Heritage; who loved living in the redwoods. Some of his greatest moments in life was playing the guitar with

his brother Steve and later passed his skills on to his son and grandsons. Mike loved with the biggest heart and may we always know the strength of his love for us. He was very proud of his kids and always said they were his greatest achievements. A funeral will not be scheduled for Mike, at his request, but we will be holding a Celebration of Life at an upcoming date TBD where friends and family can gather and celebrate the life of our father, brother, uncle, and friend. Nathan James Sagadin

November 16, 1976 - May 10, 20200

ur son Nathan returned to his Heavenly home, early Mother’s Day morning. His passing was unexpected but peaceful. He leaves behind his parents, Nancy and Jim Sagadin, and his brother, Jason, his grandma, and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Nathan was a bright light to everyone who knew him. He loved people, always greeting them with “how you doing?” No one was a stranger, just friends he hadn’t met yet. He was always happy to see you, leaving you feeling good. He had a kind and gentle spirit and was known for his beautiful smile. When questioned how he always stayed joyful, he thought about it

and said, “I just do.” Nathan worked at Fred Meyer for 12 years, where he formed many friendships, claiming that he had many grandpas and grandmas. No matter what kind of day he was having, he was always cheerful and a hard worker. When he left Fred Meyer, he liked to say that he was retired like mom and dad! Nathan was devoted to his family and adored his brother, Jason. He looked forward to having “brother’s day” trips to Eugene and Grants Pass, no parents! He loved camping with his family, hiking and kayaking with Jason. He loved the ocean, lighthouses, and collecting shells. He especially liked traveling in the family’s motorhome and being his brother’s co-pilot. He loved all things Disney, and going to Disneyland for his 40th birthday was one of the highlights of his life. Nathan also had an interest in Monarch butterflies and enjoyed stopping at the Butterfly Pavilion in Elkton and attending the Brookings Butterfly Festival in September. Nathan loved helping his dad and brother

on the property, especially driving his tractor. He helped his mom in the garden, and liked helping cook dinner every night, he made the best mashed potatoes! Nathan loved animals, especially his pets Winston, George, Zoey, and Marley. They loved him too, and miss seeing him every day. Nathan was a member of the Brookings Nazarene Church, where he looked forward to seeing his Saturday night church family. He loved to socialize, greet people and sing. His family knows he is in Heaven and finds comfort in the song “I Can Only Imagine.” “Surrounded by your glory, what will my heart feel, will I dance for you Jesus, or in awe of you be still. Will I stand in your presence, or to my knees fall, will I sing hallelujah, will be able to speak at all.” Nathan, we can only imagine! A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the ASPCA, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Shriners Hospital for Children.

Brookings seeks nominations for Yard of the Month program THE PILOT Spring is here and the City of Brookings is accepting nominations from the public for its 18th Annual Yard of the Month awards program.

“This program is such a great way to recognize City of Brookings business and property owners who go to great lengths to make their property look attractive, and by so doing, make the City

as a whole look better,” said Mayor Jake Pieper. The Yard of the Month program, begun in 2002, recognizes the most attractive residential and commercial properties inside the

City limits, May through September. Monthly award recipients receive a $50 credit on their water bill, a commemorative certificate, and a sign posted at their property declaring their

award-winning status. “I am glad the City of Brookings gives out these awards,” Mayor Pieper said. “It definitely benefits us all.” Nominations may be made by email or phone

OPRD says limited camping returns to many state parks June 9 THE PILOT SALEM — The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) will offer limited camping at many state park campgrounds starting June 9. State park camping closed statewide March 23 in an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus and limit travel, es-

pecially to smaller communities and rural areas. A list of which campgrounds will open June 9 is still being finalized. That list will be published on oregonstateparks.org by the end of May. Not all parks and all services will be available. Most of the campgrounds opening accept reservations, but some first-come,

first-served state park campgrounds may open as staff and funding are available. Those campgrounds that do open will honor existing tent and RV reservations starting June 9, and will accept new reservations from one day to two weeks in advance, instead of the usual nine months in advance. Reservations will still be made through OPRD’s contracted

vendor, Reserve America at https://oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com/. RV and tent campers without reservations will be welcome at open campgrounds as space and staffing permit. Reservations for most yurts and cabins, and group camping and group day-use, are still subject to cancellation. Visitors holding those reservations will be contacted

Some communities, such as the north coast, are not yet ready for overnight visitors from outside their area. A more widespread factor relates to funding. The Oregon State Park system is not funded by taxes, but by revenue from park visitors, a small share of the Oregon Lottery, and a portion of state recreational vehicle registrations. The revenue needed to operate state parks has fallen drastically since March, meaning one

of the most popular state park systems in the country is being operated by about half the usual staff. With a skeleton crew and limited means to hire more, there will be far fewer staff available to help visitors and address common problems such as noise and pets. Trash, landscaping, and cleaning services will all be reduced. Interpretive activities and ranger programs will be few and far between, if at all. Restrooms are expected to be available at each open park, but some shower facilities may be closed.

THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY/FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY HAS AWARED FUNDS UNDER THE EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER (EFSP) NATIONAL BOARD PROGRAM TO THE DEL NORTE COUNTY LOCAL EFSP BOARD. The Del Norte County EFSP Local Board has been awarded $11,535 in Phase 37 and $16,446 in CARES funding for a total of $27,981 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The award was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army; and, United Way Worldwide. The Board is charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. A Local Board made up of representatives from local agencies representing emergency services will determine how the funds awarded to Del Norte County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies. The Local Board is responsible for selecting agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under these phases of the program. Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be 501(c)3 private non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private nonprofit organization, have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. Del Norte County EFSP has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously to Rural Human Services, DORCAS (Seventh Day Adventist Church), Our Daily Bread Ministries, and Pacific Pantry.
