Curry County noxious weeds

Wanted: Dead, not alive board serves as the county’s weed control advisory and administers eradication and control efforts. Grant funding is available for control of certain weeds from the Oregon State Weed Board, part of the Oregon Department of Agriculture, when the board determines that a weed problem can be successfully eradicated or controlled. The top priority weeds in Curry County in order are Gorse, Jubata grass, Japanese and Himalayan knotweeds, Spanish heath and Cape ivy.

Erin Minster is out to kill off Curry County’s worst weeds. She’s the technical coordinator for the Curry Watersheds Partnership, and her goal is to raise the public’s awareness about Curry County’s “most wanted” list of top priority weeds. Minster made a presentation to the Curry County Board of Commissioners’ workshop Nov. 4. Curry Soil and Water Conservation District’s (SWCD) noxious weed control program, actively solicits funding to help control and potentially eradicate certain weeds in the county. The SWCD’s

increases wildfire risk and causes high economic losses for forestry and agriculture. “If you are not familiar with gorse, it’s a plant that has a high volatile oil content,” Minster said. “When it catches fire, it spits fire.” The 1936 Bandon fire was attributed to heavy gorse infestation. According to The Research Group LLC in a 2014 report, in terms of economic loss, gorse is number three in the state, costing half a million dollars in personal income due to loss of use of agricultural and forest land. The Gorse Action Group has a website, gorseactiongroup.org where you can go for all things gorse. The plant is described as

Gorse Gorse takes the top spot in Curry County. It is the most destructive for native habitat,

perennial, heavily armored (spiky), growing from three to 10 feet tall, often forming dense thickets. It has clusters of yellow, pea-like flowers that typically bloom from February through May. Gorse is native to Scotland, and thrives in the temperate rainforests of Curry County. Most of the problematic gorse infestations are in the north part of the county with dense infestations. Brookings has a small cluster of problem areas in the Dawson Tract, Harris Creek watershed and the Rainbow Rock area. Other areas of the south county have a few plants. It’s about a five-year process to eradicate it. More Weeds, Page A2

Salmon Run will have new management LINDA PINKHAM The Pilot

The Brookings City Council voted unanimously at its Nov. 9 meeting to enter into a contract with CourseCo to take over management of Salmon Run Golf Course, effective Jan. 1. The 18-hole golf course, located at 99040 South Bank Chetco River Road, is owned by the City of Brookings. The course is 3.5 miles up the South Bank Chetco River Road. Jack Creek runs

through the course, and steelhead and salmon are often seen spawning from the many bridges that cross the meandering creek. The course opened in 1999 and was the first golf course designed by Troy Claveran, who transitioned from being a pro golfer to a professional golf course designer. Amenities include a restaurant, full-service bar, pro shop, and PGA teaching staff. The Occasion Hall offers facilities for weddings, receptions, conferences, reunions, meetings and more.

For the past 4 1/2 years the Early Management Team, Inc., owned by Gary and Val Early, has managed the property. At the council’s April 13 meeting, the councilors decided to issue a request for proposals for the management of the course because of proposed changes for the management agreement. The current agreement expires at the end of the year, and that was after an extension of one year and seven months that was added onto the original three-

year agreement with the Early Management Team. Both Early Management Team and CourseCo responded to the RFP, which had a due date of June 29. A committee comprised of council members Brent Hodges and John McKinney, along with City Manager Janelle Howard and Deputy Public Works Director Jay Trost proposed entering into an agreement with CourseCo after interviewing both companies.

roof in desperate need of repair this year — the horse arena. Already, Coleman has managed the major roofing project for the Event Center’s main building, Docia Sweet Hall, followed by arranging to have a new roof put on the smaller Showcase Building after it was discovered while painting the building that it had a major leak. The repairs for the two roofs

were made possible by a dedicated percentage (1%) of the city’s Tourism Lodging Tax (TLT) that the council set aside for the Event Center. Over the last four years, the TLT has raised almost $300,000 for the Event Center. The TLT fund from the city still has around $110,000. “But we have another roof project coming up that’s going to be a

critical fix,” Coleman said. “Our arena roof is currently falling apart. There are large holes in the metal and chunks of insulation falling to the floor. This lets the water from the storms pour in and it leaves huge puddles and starts causing major damage to the floor in the arena.”

Curry County has added another 13 cases during the past week, on top of the previous week’s 12 cases. As of Nov. 19, the county has had 94 cases since the start of the pandemic, with two deaths. Currently, 21 of those cases are considered active. Many of the cases in reports this past two weeks are from central and south Curry County. From the OHA Weekly Report covering the week of Nov. 9 through Nov. 15, 56 cases are from the Brookings zip code and 19 are from the Gold Beach area. The rapid rise in cases this week across Oregon has prompted Governor Kate Brown to order a two-week freeze and an executive order that limited restaurants to takeout only, closed gyms and offices, and limited retail stores and pharmacies to 75 percent of capacity. The executive order prohibited social gatherings of more than six people or two households, affecting Thanksgiving holiday celebrations across the state. The restrictions are in response to the rapid acceleration in cases and will help prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed. Statewide cases have risen from last week’s 52,770 cases with 742 deaths as of Nov. 11 to 59,669 cases and 788 deaths as of Nov. 18.

Del Norte County Del Norte County is having a similar surge in cases, rising from 194 cases reported Nov. 10 to 242 cases as of Nov. 17. Of those cases, 38 are currently considered active. The rise in cases has moved Del Norte County to the “Red Tier,” which places further restrictions on some businesses.
