Man arrested for attempted murder, assault By DAVID RUPKALVIS The World
A Coos Bay man is facing charges of attempted murder and assault after starting a vehicle on fire that badly burned a woman inside. The Coos County Sheriff's Office arrested 21-year-old Jesse L. Waggoner after he started a
second fire, this one inside a fifth wheel trailer he was hiding in. Capt. Gabriel Fabrizio said the sheriff's office went to a property in the 93500 block of Timber Lane, just outside of Coos Bay, on July 1 after a caller reported an assault that occurred the night before. When deputies arrived, they found signs of the assault on the
property and learned Waggoner was hiding in a fifth-wheel trailer. Deputies also found a woman with severe burns, which allegedly occurred when Waggoner started a vehicle on fire when the woman was inside had been flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Portland. Fabrizio said because of the
serious nature of the incident, the Coos County Major Crimes Team was called in to assist. Deputies also applied for a search warrant while waiting for additional officers to arrive. As more officers arrived on the property, Waggoner started the fifth wheel on fire while he was inside. Officers on scene went into the trailer and removed
Waggoner before he was harmed and extinguished the blaze. Waggoner was taken to Bay Area Hospital for evaluation and later transported to the Coos County Jail, where he was booked on charges of attempted murder and assault 1. Fabrizio said the sheriff's office is continuing to investigate the incidents.
A weekend of celebrations for America's birthday One day was not enough to contain the patriotism and fun as Coos Bay and North Bend celebrated Independence Day with two days of festivities. On Sunday, July 3, The Mill Casino attracted thousands of guests who took part in fun events which led up the largest fireworks display on the Oregon Coast. On July the Fourth, the city of Coos Bay celebrated double with the Fourth in the Park festivities at Mingus Park during the day and a fireworks display over the bay at night. Coos Bay firefighters assisted as children waited in line up to an hour to fish. Bottom left, children play games at Mingus Park. Bottom right, fireworks light up the night sky.

Dozens protest 'harmful' abortion ruling By DAVID RUPKALVIS The World
Less than two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled abortion is not a Constitutional right, more than 50 people protested in downtown Coos Bay, saying the decision will harm women across the nation. Ashlee Francis brought her son, Dakari Trask, to the event because she is concerned about friends and family in other states. "I'm here to protest and show support to the areas going through Roe vs. Wade issue right now and have the absolute bans," Francis said. "We're from Arizona, and they're trying to have a full abortion ban." Francis said she made the difficult decision to have an abortion after Dakari was born because she wanted to be able to give him the life he deserves. Please see PROTEST, Page A12
