The most important recruiting tool you have is communicating to potential employees why your company is worth working for! In a tight labor market, your company is competing for a limited number of job applicants. Your company story needs to be a sales pitch telling job seekers everything of value your company offers its employees. The story may include info on pay, benefits, workplace perks, training, and career development opportunities—even the fun times your staff has together.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Your story helps differentiate your company from your competitors! A compelling story helps recruit potential employees—which will help you sustain the growth and future of your company! If your company offers a benefit that stands out from a competing employer or if your company is an older, more established company with a track record of growth and success— emphasize it!

Creating your Story

Step 1: Review Your Company Offerings in Detail

List all the benefits currently being offered to employees that could be perceived as valuable. Besides traditional compensation and benefits, include other perks that convey your company’s culture—such as a casual dress code, volunteer opportunities, holiday bonuses, company retreats, etc.

Step 2: Ask Your Employees,“Why do you like working here?”

Ask your current Employees – “Why do you like working for our company?” While compensation and benefits are often at the top of everyone’s list, you may be surprised to learn what else is helping to retain your workers.

Step 3: Communicate Your Story Back to Your

Staff

Collect those employee’s insights and start writing! Then share our story with every staff member—especially your company’s management team. Consider it the new elevator pitch—a mini-story in paragraph form that can be used as a response when one of your staff is asked, “Why do you like working for your employer?

Step 4: Communicate Your Story to the Public

Invite staff to share the message outside the company. Using testimonials from current employees is a powerful recruitment tool, as job candidates are more likely to listen to what current employees have to say.
