Crescent City gets grant for veterans’ housing By Jessica Goddard Staff Writer

he Crescent City Housing Authority said it received a $52,512 grant in December to assist
local homeless veterans in finding housing. In a press release, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein reported that 27 cities in California will be given a total $10.5 million in grants from the Housing and Ur-
ban Development’s Veterans Administration Supportive Housing Program, which includes Crescent City. The city’s housing authority, which assists low-income families with their rent, reserves 18
federal HUD vouchers for homeless veterans. Pet advocate spearheads calendar fundraiser E

fforts are underway to tie the turning of the new year ’s calendar to a local fundraising effort. When Gloria Bobertz adopted her dog Cash, a 9-month old German shepherd/Malamute mix, from Camp Berry, she was so impressed with the puppy adoption effort run
by Rhonda Barry from her home that Bobertz wanted to help. “It made me realize, here are these people working with dogs that are neglected or are pups like Cash, so I wanted to become more involved in this, because I’ve always had a passion for animals,” Bobertz said. With the arrival of the new year, she had an idea. “I do photography,
and I thought, ‘You know, I bet I can get some people to donate their photographs to create a calendar, with all of the proceeds to go for the dogs.’” Bobertz approached business owners she knows at Del Norte Office Supply, 101 Laundry, and Trees of Mystery to finance creat-

ince last fall, caution tape had surrounded Raliberto’s Taco Shop’s vibrant red and yellow building, while electricians and repairmen came and went. Now, after more than three months of work, the caution tape has come off. Raliberto’s Taco Shop opened its doors this week to once again cook customers’ favorite dishes. The shop, in downtown Crescent City just off U.S. Highway 101, initially closed on Sept. 30, with a tentative reopening set for mid-October. A couple months later than planned, it has returned refurbished and modernized. Property manager Roy Tedsen originally expected to replace only the tile and the restaurant’s grease trap, but he continued to find needed improvements, delaying the opening until January. “Once you get going, well, you know, ‘If we’re going to do this, we’ve got to do that,’” Tedsen said. The building now has a brand-new ventilation system, and stainless-steel panels and vinyl sheeting in the kitchen. Moore Heating and Air installed a streamlined, state-of-the-art heating system, Red Sky Roofing replaced the wooden shingles with mansard steel roofing, and Crescent Electric updated the entire electrical system. The kitchen floors, which were covered in old, unit ceramic tiles, have been replaced with new red quarry, restaurant non-slip tiles. Since the grease trap had been bent, Tedsen contracted with First Service Plumbing and Heating to install a new system, a job that required digging through the sidewalk and asphalt outside of the building. “A lot of these repairs you aren’t even going to be able to see, but it’s going to

Parasite slows operations at the Del Norte shelter By David Hayes Staff Writer
T
he Del Norte Animal Control Shelter has cancelled its upcoming Second Saturday adoption event because of a lingering outbreak of giardia. Justin Riggs of Del Norte Director of Animal Control said the intestinal parasite appeared in several dogs in December and spread throughout the kennel’s remaining population. “Frankly, we’re lucky it doesn’t happen more,” Riggs said. He said the shelter, at 821 Elk Valley Rd., is required to house every stray dog the animal control agency picks up. “If it’s
sick, we can’t always tell until it’s been here a few days, and the parasite has had a chance to spread,” Riggs said. He added that he can’t pinpoint precisely which dog brought in the parasite. The kennel’s staff has put all of the dogs, whether or not they’ve exhibited symptoms of giardia, on a course of medication. “At this point, it almost doesn’t matter when or who it started with,” Riggs said. Giardia and coccidia are tiny, single-celled parasites that cause primarily digestive issues. Dogs become infected by: • Being in contact with infected feces from another dog or cat • Rolling and playing in

Camp on tap for middle schoolers T
he Del Norte Youth Council will host its annual Middle School Day Camp on Jan. 25, this year featuring 16 different workshops. The youth council consists of seven high school students ranging from freshmen to seniors. In 2015, council members created a one-day camp that would offer local youth an opportunity to learn about a variety of issues through activities and engagement. One of this year ’s workshops, “You Matter,” will feature keynote speaker Richard Kuo, who’ll conduct a program on becoming a better leader, working with teams, and life skills. Another workshop, Above the Influence, is a social media campaign the council has been developing, in collab-
oration with Building Healthy Communities, to promote local alternatives to encourage youth to avoid drug and alcohol use. Council members also will be collaborating with community partners such as the North Coast Rape Crisis Team, which offers women’s self-defense, to build youth’s awareness and learn self-control. SnapED will conduct Setting the Stage for Healthy Choices to assist youth with healthy activities and meals. Also, the Sources of Strength club from Crescent Elk Middle School, collaborating with Coastal Connections, will hold a workshop to provide youth with a suicide prevention model. But the vets have been really helpful getting our orders.” As for local residents’ pets at home, Riggs said, “First, it’s really important to keep pets up to date on vaccinations, as giardia is far from the only diseases in the community. “Don’t let them drink from standing water on or off property, out in town, in parks. Also, don’t let them eat anything they find. It may be soiled by other dogs. And don’t let them into areas contaminated with feces.” The animal shelter continues to conduct pet licensing, but will not be showing dogs for adoption for the next several weeks, Riggs said. Staff can show some animals by appointment only, but only if they’ve confirmed the animals have completed treatment.

Regardless, the dogs are off limits to the public at the county shelter until the animals all have gone through a full course of antibiotics and the facility has undergone a thorough cleaning. Riggs said the parasite appeared in December, but the facility’s deep clean has yet to be completed. “Cleaning isn’t completed in a day. It’s taking over 100 staff hours. “There’s a lot of cleaning the grounds, and the staff is following a 20-point decontamination program,” he said. The problem with giardia, Riggs said, is it doesn’t naturally dissipate. Another problem is finding enough medication for the shelter’s

Elks Lodge plans pin-up contest
here will be victory rolls, pompadours and other symbols of the pin-up aesthetic at Crescent City Elks Lodge 1689 for its pin-up contest Jan. 18. “I wanted to create a fun event to get people dressing up, going out and having a good time. I was inspired by all the folks who were dressing up for the Sea Cruise and thought, ‘Why not make it an occasion?’” said event coordinator Jermaine Brubaker. The contest is open to all genders. Attendees can enter either the “fem” or “butch” pin-up categories. The event costs $15 and is open to the public, ages 21 and older. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8:00. “I wanted the event to be as inclusive as possible, rock some heels and a wiggle dress, or a pompadour and
leather jacket, or even a zoot suit or military uniform,” Brubaker said. The show will feature two drag performers from Humboldt County Davinya and Fuscia Rae. Fuscia Rae will serve as the event’s emcee. Khrysalis Photography will have a booth set up downstairs where guests can have their photos taken. Contest winners in each category will receive a mini-photo session with Khrysalis. There is no additional cost to enter the contest. Organizers said they encourage people to step outside their comfort zone and have some fun. “Play with the style,” said Bre Ellis. “Bring out the weirdos and monsters!” Ellis, a local makeup artist and hair stylist, is one of three judges for the event. Brubaker, Ellis and Dawn Anderson O’Hagan will be surveying the entrees for the best costumes
of the evening. “I wanted to pull together some local people who have experience doing pin-up to help with this event,” said Ellis. “We even were able to get the talented Karen Martinez to be our stage manager for the night.” Brubaker felt a partnership with the Elks Lodge was a perfect fit and has been working closely with Sommer Livingstone, the Elks event planner. The lodge will be offering themed drink specials straight from the ‘40s. The pin-up contest is a fundraiser for the Elks general fund. City Council approves idea to add two sergeant positions to police department T

he Crescent City Council approved plans earlier this week to increase the police department’s staffing by adding two sergeant positions. The first phase of that plan enables City Manager Eric Wier to hire one new sergeant and to eliminate an existing officer position. “Ideally, we’d add these sergeants with existing officers. That’s going to take additional resources that the city doesn’t currently have. We’re not flush with cash in the general fund, we’re only $100,000 above that minimum reserve,” Wier told the council Monday night. (Council member Alex Fallman was absent from the meeting.) Wier said the second phase of hiring a sergeant opens in February, after Officer Gene Votruba retires later this month. “If the council approves this tonight, we’ll turn right around and start recruitment, so we’ll start it tomorrow,” Wier said. “It will be advertised for approximately two to three weeks, depending on applications we get, and we will immediately try to fill these sergeant positions.” Wier’s report to the council put current police staffing at 14 full-time employees: two sergeants, 10 officers and a records specialist. The proposal eventually would provide for four full-time sergeants and reduce the number of officers by two, to eight full-time positions. Wier said that during the last round of negotiations with the Crescent City Police Officers Association, the organization expressed concerns that its sergeants
worked only day shifts and left night shifts unsupervised. “How it works now,” said Wier, “sergeants are on call, or the chief (is), and answer their phones if there were ever any concerns that would arise. This has worked for several years, although it’s not ideal. “The police role changes rapidly, and to have that sergeant there on scene, hopefully at least with a radio active in their hand, is a very valuable benefit.” The city’s plan takes two front-line officer positions and fills those with sergeants. Then, ideally, the city would backfill the officer positions and add a detective position, whose sole focus would be the investigative side of the police department, Wier said. “If you look at full implementation of this plan all the way out to phase four, it can cost a maximum, if everybody was at their top step with full benefits, of $373,000. We don’t have the resources in place to fully implement that. “So, what is before the council tonight is to take advantage of the opportunity that we have, which is with three vacancies, and at this point fill one sergeant position,” Wier said. He said he’d return to the city council for approval of the subsequent hiring phase following Votruba’s retirement. The staff report puts the cost of hiring two new sergeants, and reducing full-time officers from 10 to eight by backfilling positions, at about $45,000 per year. The report shows no anticipated impact to the current fiscal-year budget, so city staff are not looking for additional appropriations. “Due to vacancies in the department at
various times this year, the increased cost of two additional sergeant positions compared to officer positions can be covered in the existing budget,” reads the report. “Going forward, the impact will be up to $45,480 per year, based on current wages and benefits.” Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffin said the police officers’ association is not “asking for a whole bunch down the road. We’re asking for a minimum to provide service to the city and also keep our officers safe. “This first step, of sergeant 24-hour supervision, can do both of that. It’s providing liability coverage for the city and it’s going to help the officers progress down the line, and a couple of them to promote up, too. “I 100% support this,” said Griffin. “I don’t see a downfall to this, other than costing a little extra money.” Council member Jason Greenough said the proposed plan appeared to be a common-sense solution for supervisory staff on hand every shift. “This is an ideal department with all the positions filled. This is something I would support. It covers the city in the event that something does happen. We need that extra supervisory person on,” Greenough said. Added Mayor Blake Inscore, “I agree that it would provide a greater level of coverage and support to our community. “(And) I very much like the idea of providing the opportunities for advancement within the organization. I hope that becomes a key retention thing for people, that there’s an obvious place to grow within the organization.”

Dear Editor: In regards to the Del Norte Unified School District contract dispute and the impending teacher strike: Mr. Napier, which is more dangerous, a small juvenile rattlesnake or a large, fully mature rattlesnake? One might compare the Del Norte teaching staff to a young rattlesnake readying to strike. While I am an elder staff member, a veteran of more than 20 years, I am also in the minority. I am not so keen on striking, largely for personal reasons, as it is likely to wreak havoc on my retirement plans. But I am also well aware of a strike’s many other negative effects - no one will surface a winner. A protracted strike will cause a great deal of financial harm to our teachers. Low morale will sink much deeper. We will lose staff. Already-challenging teacher recruitment will become that much more difficult. Students will miss out on important education. Standardized test scores will nosedive. Your legacy will be permanently stained. But, as I have said,
I am in the minority. We have a young coil of teachers; somewhere around half of our staff have been hired within the last five years. And they are deeply agitated. They’re fired up, they want to strike! And why not? Their roots here are not yet deep. They can and will leave if our needs are not met. Already, we have seen so many turnovers. You know it’s true; why, just consider how many math teachers Del Norte High School has lost in the last five years! Baby rattlesnakes are more dangerous, because they will strike at anything. And when they do, they sink their fangs in fully and inject every last bit of their venom, leaving themselves defenseless against further dangers. The old, grizzled rattlesnake knows its poison is an absolute last resort, to be used sparingly. Make no mistake, though, that old rattlesnake is still plenty dangerous. Teachers aren’t looking to get rich, they just want to keep up with inflation and provide for their families. Let us use common sense to reach a fair deal, and avoid the perils of a strike altogether. Jeffrey Hanck Crescent City

My fiancee, “Holly,” and I went to middle school and high school together, but never really got to know each other until a few years ago. I love her more than words can describe, and I’m happy to be getting ready to spend my life with her. Growing up, I was socially awkward, partly due to having Asperger’s, which made me a target for bullies. Holly and I are now choosing our wedding party. My sister will be one of her bridesmaids. Holly is an only child, so she doesn’t have a brother who could be one of my groomsmen. She has expressed that she would like her cousin “Gerald” to be one of my groomsmen, so someone from her family is in our wedding party. The problem is, Gerald was my main tormentor from eighth grade all through high school. At one point in 10th grade, his cruelty led to my attempting suicide. I carry the scar from the attempt on my right wrist. I understand that people change and mature as they

The scar on your wrist is visible, but clearly there are others, equally painful, that are not. I don’t think it would come across as either shallow or petty if you explain to your fiancee, exactly as you have explained it to me, why you prefer Gerald not be at the altar with you on the most important day of your life. This is something Holly should have been made aware of before the two of you set a wedding date. Do it now. DEAR ABBY: I’ve been an alcoholic since I was 21. I was married for 19 years, and my drinking was at its worst toward the end. I was selfish toward my wife and my daughter. Since then, I have learned many hard lessons that could have been avoided if only I had never drunk.
I have apologized to my exwife for my actions. I was never violent, but I embarrassed her and my daughter with behavior that I’m ashamed of. After our divorce, I made a few more mistakes and finally sought help. I’m in a Christian-based rehab program and have chosen to follow this path for the rest of my life. Over the last six months I have sent texts and a few letters to my daughter, hoping for an acknowledgment or some dialogue, to no avail. Since being at rehab, I’ve written her about my feelings and some small talk, always ending my letter telling her she’s the love of my heart, and I miss her. Is there anything else I can do? -- HOPING AND PRAYING IN NASHVILLE DEAR HOPING: Yes, there is one more thing you can do. Because she may consider your words nothing but lip service, make an attempt to visit her so she can SEE the change in you. Accept that damage has been done, and you cannot alter the past. Continue living your life on the path you have chosen and pray that, with time, your daughter will recognize that you have turned your life around and let you back in to hers.

Brookings man has been arrested in connection with a Nov. 4 burglary of the Brookings Harbor Veterinary Hospital at 15630 U.S. Highway 101. What’s more, he said, it was necessary to remove the rust and corrosion from the restaurant’s steel sign poles, a task many businesses in Crescent City must undertake. “That’s all fine and good if you want to watch the whales go by, but if you’re a property owner, there’s a little bit of rust that goes along with [the ocean]. So that was all treated chemically,” Tedsen said. And he replaced the 1980s wood on the building’s exterior with a hardy
sheeting that imitates stucco siding, feeling it would go better with Raliberto’s theme. “It’s a lot more streamlined and modern-looking building than it was,” Tedsen said. Those who favored the taco shop’s vivid exterior look need not worry. The walls will be repainted to match the chain’s colorful hues as soon as the weather permits, said Tedsen. Another task he undertook was cleaning clutter that had accumulated from the four businesses that had occupied the building since the ‘80s, such as two abandoned water heaters. “Over the years, it’s been used as a restaurant, but we’ve had different proprietors there,” Tedsen said. “[Things have] been used and abandoned, and no one has ever taken any

of that stuff out.” Although he said there are still some last-minute tasks to wrap up, he can breathe a bit easier now that the work is largely taken care of. And, he said, his building contributes to the positive impression of the community that motorists get as they drive through on U.S. Highway 101. “The main commercial corridor is Highway 101. That’s going to be what they remember. And when they think about Crescent City, that’s going to be who they think we are,” Tedsen said. “There have been several people who have done a good job of keeping their buildings up, and certainly we want to continue in that same spirit.”

Eileen Bennett, director of the Humane Society of Del Norte, said that in her 11 years there, she has never seen such a calendar produced. It consists entirely of local photography, including the Battery Point Lighthouse, scenic wooded areas, the harbor and local events. In fact, Bennett said, the calendar has photos suitable for framing. “The cover photo is of a beach area, with the members of each group. The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness’ Art in Public Places exhibit in the Del Norte Superior Court at 450 H St in Crescent City is a collection of multimedia artwork from local artists as part of the recent 28th Annual Juried Art Show. The exhibit will be available for viewing through Jan. 16. The courthouse is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays except for state holidays. Music in the Redwoods, presented by the Del Norte-Curry Community Concert Association, is celebrating 70 years of bringing quality live entertainment to our community. Brian Scott Gallery, located at 515 Chetco Ave in Brookings, hosts their “Winter Warmer Art Event” Saturday, Jan. 11 from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. Painter, sculptor, author, musician, Horst Wolf is the Gallery’s Artist of the Month and will be featured at this event. Horst is presenting new works in multi-media, combining painting and cartooning which he calls, “Howo Paintings.” Refreshments will be served, and Tiger Lily will provide musical entertainment. Located in Wright’s Custom Framing and Art Supply at 810 Chetco Ave in Brookings, the Fog and Fine Art Gallery displays many local artists showing a variety of media including jewelry, pottery, painting, and more. Brookings Harbor Friends of Music continues their 35th season with Michael Brown, pianist, composer, and Lincoln Center emerging artist on Sunday, Jan. 5. The rest of their season will include: St. Petersburg Piano Quartet, Grammy-nominated ensemble on Sunday, Feb. 9; Jasper String Quartet, with violin, cello, and viola on Sunday, March 15; Rastrelli Cello Quartet, betweenthe-genres Russian ensemble on Sunday, April 5; and Mayuko Kamio, returning favorite virtuoso violinist on Sunday, April 26. Tickets are available for purchase at Wright’s Custom Framing at 810 Chetco Ave in Brookings. Tickets are $20 per event and children 18 and under receive free admission. The season concludes on May 17 with their annual, free-of-charge scholarship concert with Alexander Tutanov, professor of piano at Southern Oregon University, and will feature students selected as scholarship recipients.
