Sexual assault case snags teachers By Jessica Goddard Staff Writer

T

he Del Norte County district attorney has filed charges against four individuals regarding child sexual abuse allegations dating from 2011 to 2019. Two of those charged - Kathleen Mary Fuson, 60, and Katlin Janice Marie Nole, 43 - are employees of the Del Norte Unified School District, Fuson since February

2011 and Nole since January 2018. Both were taken into custody Jan 17. The alleged conduct was not related to their employment with the district and did not occur on district property, according to Del Norte Superintendent Jeff Harris. Nole’s husband, Jody Nole, 49, and Edward Bert Steele, 48, are the other two individuals named in the case. Jody Nole faces

charges of suspicion of sexual intercourse or sodomy with a child 10 years old or younger, continuous sexual abuse of a child, and aggravated sexual assault of a child. He is currently held in Pelican Bay State Prison, but appeared for arraignment along with Fuson and Katlin Nole on Jan 21. Fuson was arrested after school at Pine Grove Elementary School, where she worked as a

second-grade teacher. Katlin Nole worked as a school district special-education instructional assistant and was taken into custody at Del Norte High School. The district has placed both on administrative leave, according to Harris. “The district is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all of our students. tudents stood in front of the six judges, their voices shaking slightly, as they recited poems to their peers, teachers and guests at two different competitions last week. Each winner will now perform on Feb. 5 for a chance to become the Del Norte County’s 2020 Poetry Out Loud champion. “I feel like the competition was incredibly successful. We are so proud of every student who participated and inspired by the incredible job they did today. We are giddy,” said Kelly Troyna, English language arts teacher at Sunset High School. The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) and the Del Norte Unified School District (DNUSD) partnered to bring Del Norte County its second annual Poetry Out Loud Competition. urt Hochberg has been making a living as a seafaring fisherman since 1973. When he brought his boat Rogue up from the Bay Area in 2006 for the crab fishing off the shores of Crescent City, he liked the area so much he decided to stay.

He saw an opportunity to transition selling his fresh catches from off his boat to a storefront on the pier. But a funny thing happened on his way to owning Crescent Seafood Fresh Fish Market. Customers wanted someone else to prepare that fresh catch into their meal. “I never really thought I’d be cooking for people,” Kurt said. “It was the last thing that was on my list of things to do. “We originally started this business as a retail seafood market. But there had to be 30% of people who could find us back here turning around and walking out because we couldn’t sit them down and feed them.” Through necessity, Hochberg and his wife, Terri, changed their business plan, rebranded themselves and reopened as Crescent Seafood and Deli. “It’s kind of like Taylor Sausage if I had to compare it to another company,” he said. with the opportunity to purchase The World and its two sister publications, it was a logical fit with our other news media on the Oregon coast. “We’ll now have more people and resources available to make our individual publications here even stronger.”
