NDSU Bowman brings the heat at Extension hosts

armers from all over the surrounding area gathered in Bowman for the NDSU Extension’s crop tour this week for a look at the latest local crop research.

Research Agronomist John Rickertsen showcased different crop types and variants to show what crops have been growing best in the Bowman County region.

Rickertsen explained, “We are basically just giving people an overview of what research we are doing at the agronomy research station. People want to know what works best here.”

During the field day, producers got to see up close and in person exactly what experimental trials are working best close to home.

odeo Club athletes from Bowman County and surrounding areas galloped down to Rock Springs, Wyoming last week to compete in the 2019 National High School Finals Rodeo Competition.

There, the Bowman students competed alongside 1,500 competitors from all over the nation and other countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Bowman County represented well over ten percent of 55 North Dakota students participating in the national competition.

Even though Rodeo isn’t a school sport, individuals across Bowman County and surrounding areas still participate through a local club. To participate in Rodeo, passionate parents and par-

ticipating students practice, register, and travel themselves to compete.

This year ’s competition was Senior Rodeo Club President Cashae McGee’s third time attending the national level competition and her last time competing on the high school level.

She said that it was great experience to travel to Rock Springs to compete once again on a national stage.

“There are always people who are first in their class in

what they do,” said McGee. “It really pushes you to do your best.”

Although McGee wished she had performed better, she was still very impressed with her fellow club members’ performances.

“A lot of people really stepped up, especially Molly Rotenberger,” said McGee. “Molly placed really well in the Goat Tying.”

- Mattie Mastel from Marmarth placed 65th Reined Cow Horse.

Finding Fen-Phen July 8, 2019 — It was on this date in 1997 that CNN broke the news that the miracle combi-

nation of diet drugs known as fen-phen was causing leakage in users’ heart valves. What many don’t know is that the first person to

figure it out was a cardiac sonographer at Fargo’s MeritCare named Pam Ruff.

According to an article for Science News, Ruff noted two unusual echocardiograms in December 1994. Among the heart-structure images she created, she found leaky valves for two relatively young women – a disorder that was rare for anyone under the age of 50.

She also noted that both women were using the fen-phen diet regimen. Following a gut feeling, she pulled one patient, Donna Proch-

Ruff approached MeritCare cardiologists about a possible link between fen-phen and valvular heart disease, but they felt that what she had found was probably a coincidence; there hadn’t been any previous reports that would cause them to believe otherwise.

But Ruff wasn’t entirely convinced.

“We continued to see patients come through that had been on this combination of diet drugs,” she said, “(and) these patients had valves that were remarkably similar to the ones (I’d) seen.”

At the end of the competition, North Dakota placed 11th in the Overall Girls Team Standing and 24th in the Overall Boys Team Standing. Overall North Dakota placed 21st in the competition.

Although this was McGee’s last high school competition, she said that she plans on continuing her Rodeo career into college at Black Hills State.

“It’s always a fun experience traveling, competing, and being around friends,” said McGee. “I will definitely be goat tying and barrel racing in the future.”

Over the next two years, Ruff put together twenty files of women, most in their 30s or 40s, who had leaky heart valves and were using fenphen.

None of them had a history of rheumatic fever, an infection that could have caused heart damage such as this.

Over time, cardiologist Jack Crary became more convinced that Ruff’s suspicions showed merit and should be investigated.

A woman he was treating was using fen-phen, and he knew that previously, nobody had diagnosed her with a heart murmur. Yet now she had a murmur that he could hear very clearly. In

fact, she was showing signs of heart failure.

“I became quite concerned as I was sitting there talking to her,” Dr. Crary told Science News.

He knew that if a connection between fen-phen and valvular heart disease truly existed, millions of people were possibly being affected. “I went back and reviewed the cases that Pam had collected,” he said. “It was the same story over and over.”

Throughout the day, food venders and sidewalk sales venders took advantage of the festivities. In addition to vendors, people satisfied their shopping fix with the citywide rummage sales.

Kids also had a blast at Summer Fest, running their hearts out on the inflatables and blow-up games.

At dinnertime, participating cooks grilled and put their best rib forward to participate in the RibFest.

Stuchl said that the RibFest was the most

popular part of the festivities with over 500 people served.

In the end, Gary Burkhardsmeier took home the title for tastiest ribs.

Overall, Stuchl said that she was excited to discuss what worked well in this year’s summer fest

is to give farmers an understanding of what is available and what works in Bowman County.

Overall, Rickertsen said that the local crop tour was a success.

“I was very pleased with the attendance,” he said. “We had one of our best turnouts in while.”

For a farmer, improving higher yields and disease resistance allows crucial year-toyear progress.

Rickertsen said that every year, the research station is consistently testing more variants.

As the research station researches more variants, they are hoping to find the best performing breed for farmers to grow locally.

Even if there is an exciting new variant, Rickertsen said that it takes over three years to really know if a crop can consistently perform well in the area.

Demolition Derby brings community competition

he Bowman County Fair Board held its annual Demolition Derby on Sunday, July 21st.

Ten cars competed and 7 of the drivers were from the Bow-

man area. Other cars came from Baker, MT, Prairie City, SD, and Williston, ND. First place went to James Brixely from Prairie City, 2nd went to Summitt Wiman from Baker, Mt, and third went to Jennifer Hestekin

HOFLAND Dept. Head Report: A representative from the state called Hofland and wondered why we are not maintaining the overhead.

Hofland said we are not capable with the equipment that we have to do some of the things they are requesting. They want us to Durapatch the overhead and we have never Durapatched the highway or overhead. The Commission was questioning how the City is responsible for maintenance on a federal highway. We will have Attorney Wild review our liability for the overhead and see what our maximum responsibility is.

The Commission is okay with not Durpatching it right now while the agreement is being looked into.

Halleck Mine: There is a huge sink hole again at the Halleck Mine site by the landfill. The opening is about the size of 55-gallon drum and he can’t see the bottom. The Public Safety Commission is coming tomorrow to look at it.

Garbage Building Addition Floor: We need to have a concrete sand separator instead of just floor drains in the garbage building addition floor. The drains are already set up in the shop and S & T Plumbing needs to connect them to a line going to the separator that will go outside. The floor can get done tomorrow if the Commission approves the purchase of the separator.

Motion by Shear, second by Schaaf to approve S & T Plumbing’s quote in the amount of $900.00 to hook up the concrete sand separator to the drains and Lynn’s Backhoe in the amount of $7,422.00 for the purchase of the concrete sand separator to come out of the garbage fund. Dust Issue by James Field: A resident called to complain about the dust from people driving down the alleyway behind the townhomes because of another road being blocked off during the baseball games. Hofland will talk to C. Walby about blocking off the alleyway so people can’t drive down it during the games.

Water Tower Access: For years we have had access through Steve Beylunds property to the water tower on the west side, but he has now cut off access to the City. He dug a hole in the road and buried a piece of equipment and obliterated the rest of the road. He wants the City to give him City water hookups for free without annexing to the City.

Wild visited with him and Wild’s suggestion is to give him an offer of 5 or 6 user hookups for a permanent easement, as the user hookups are needed, and the user hookups would only qualify if they did not abut City limits.

We charge $2,500.00 for a water user hookup that is not in the city limits. We would not be providing the water line, Beylund would be required to meet the City specifications for the water line. He would be hooking up to a 6” line.

Beylund would be required to maintain the water line and take care of it if there was a water leak. The other option the City has is to file for eminent domain.

asking for $10,000.00 in levied funds again for 2020. Swanson thanked the City for their support in the past, the levied funds pay their help. They may need a new mower soon. They put in solar lights that are higher so people can see them, and they are working on signage for the cemetery.

SWHC – WEISNER City Sales Tax Request: J. Bagley is requesting City sales tax funds for a 3D mammography machine.

The quote they provided has their old machine listed as a trade in.

We currently have $259,831.13 in the Healthcare City Sales Tax Fund, their request is in the amount of $287,055.00.

Motion by Limesand, second by Schaaf to expend the balance of $259,831.13 in city sales tax funds for a 3D mammography machine at this time, if there are additional funds needed, they can come back to the next meeting as additional funds will be available then. The supplier will help market the 3D mammography machine to the community.

RCV= all aye, MC. SUMMERFEST- BROOKS and HENDERSON: Drew Henderson Windy’s Bar: Henderson is asking for kids to be allowed in the yellow area on the map he presented and allow open container. They will wrist band everyone 21 years of age and older. They will have additional people hired to make sure alcohol doesn’t go out of the corralled area. He would like the corn hole area to be open container until the tournament is over, it’s 21 and older only. They are getting approval from Ron and Ardis Kraulik for the blocking off of the cornhole area for 21 and over where drinking will be allowed.

Becky Brooks Chamber Commerce: Wants to block off for open container and allow the children in that area also, they want it to be a family event. Headley feels after the meal is over the kids should go out of the open container area. The concert starts at 8:00 pm, she was wondering if we would consider letting the kids dance for an hour.

Motion by Schaaf, second by Shear to allow open container and minors in the designated area on the map (see map on file at City Hall) for the Ribfest meal throughout the day until 8:00 pm, then at 8:00 pm the minors have to be in a designated area and allow cornhole area to be blocked off for 21 and older. RCV= all aye, MC. CHIEF HEADLEY: Cleaners Building: Instead of seeking an order from the district court to gain entrance to the Cleaners building, there is a contractor that uses this building for shelter for his equipment and he has agreed to to give the police Department access to the building. Tomorrow they will gain access, a contractor will access the condition and the contractor will write a report for the Commission.

Tall Grass: After the last meeting they wrote 37 letters of violation on lawns that had more than 12” of grass that needed to be mowed. Due to the owners not acting on the violation notice, 7 properties required the City to hire someone to mow it . There were also 3 citations issued.

Headley felt that this process worked better and got a lot quicker results.

SCHAAF: Fireworks: Schaaf went over his proposed changes for times of firework discharge and additional verbiage to the fireworks ordinance. Allen will give the proposed changes to Ryan whom is updating the ordinances. The changes wouldn’t take effect until the “2020 fireworks season.”

There was not a first reading, the ordinance will be brought back at a later date with the other Ordinances that Ryan is reviewing.

ALLEN: 2019 Budget Amendments: Allen asked to amend and increase the 2019 Budget as follows: Funds 3006/431000/111 Emergency Snow Removal in the amount of $1,652.72, 3006/431000/490 Emergency Snow Removal $940.11, 3090/432500/3090 City Maintenance $1,339.13, 3069/462500/140 Chip Seal Project $251,811.32, 6085/436000/803 Garbage Equipment $31,047.57, and

6080/436000/877 Garbage Fund $8,322.00. Motion by Limesand, second by Shear to approve the budget amendments as presented. RCV= all aye, MC. Close the office on July 5th: Allen asked if it was ok to close the City Hall on July 5th. Motion by Limesand, second by Schaaf to close City Hall on July 5th and the employee must take a half a day vacation.

JAMES: TR Expressway Grant Letter of Support: James was contacted to write a letter of support for a grant application for the TR Expressway. The Commission was in favor of James signing a letter of support for the TR Expressway Grant.

CLOSE OF MEETING: Bakken Cookfest: All the Commissioners were given an invite to attend the Bakken Cookfest and asked to spread the word to the locals to come and enjoy the free food and information on the oil industry.

Motion by Limesand, second by Shear to approve Attorney Wild to draw up a waiver for 6 water user hookups to City water in the Beylund First Subdivision, Beylund must maintain the water line, in exchange for a permanent easement that follows the former road access leading to the west water tower, this offer would be for water user hookup only and the City would not assume maintenance responsibility on the lines.

There is no time limit on this offer.

All property accessing this water line would not be eligible if they are adjacent to the city limits and annexation is available. RCV= all aye, MC. BROSZ: ND DOT Safety Project Speed Zones: Rob Rayhorn wanted the City Commission to know that the traffic study warranted the speed zones to be different than what was applied for. Brosz went over the speed zone changes.

If we get the safety grant it would give Highway 12 more lighting, new speed zones, and turn lanes on the east end of town and we could add the walk/bike path (TAP project) to the grant because its considered a safety issue. If we are awarded the project, we would write a letter to Pam Wenger and decline the TAP Grant for the bike/walk path and someone else could use those funds.

The Commissioners are okay with the traffic study results and are okay with keeping them that way. Brosz will tell Rob Rayhorn at ND DOT that the Commission is okay with the results and we will wait for the award.

Crossroads Business Park: The paving is done at the business park. Brosz presented Bowman County Pay Application #12 in the amount of $218,339.41. Motion

by Limesand, second by Schaaf to approve Bowman County Pay Application # 12, Schedule II in the amount of $218,339.41. The cost of paving will go over by about $5,000.00 because they went past where the Weed Board building is. RCV= all aye, MC. Curb and Gutter Replacement and City Hall Front Yard: Brosz will mail out the specifications for bids on the concrete for curb and gutter and for the area of concrete in front of City Hall. The Commission is okay with it so he can get bids next month.

VISION WEST-DEB NELSON: Membership: Nelson gave a presentation on Vision West and would like to have the City become a member. The Commission said they would consider it at budget time.

SWEETWATER GOLF COURSE – LINDSTROM 2020 Budget Request: Lindstrom is requesting $26,250.00 this year. Their regular request stayed the same in the amount of $21,250.00 plus $5,000.00 for road repair. Bowman County gave them the culvert that is needed for the road repair on the east side of golf course by the dam. They do not have a current manager; Melissa Lindstrom is doing it as a donation. They have a fresh board this year.

ROBINSON CRUSOE Audition An audition will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) original adaptation of ROBINSON CRUSOE Monday August 12, at the Rouzie Rec from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Those auditioning should arrive at 10:00am and plan to stay for the full two hours (bring a sack lunch). The cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition.

Among the roles to be cast are Robinson Crusoe, his sole companion; a goat named Wilson, Leonard the Leopard, Friday’s Family, the Oscar Octopus Octet, a family of Goats, the very hairy Frowny-Face Tribe, and the colorful Chameleons. All students, grades 1st–12th, are encouraged to audition. No advance preparation is necessary. Assistant Directors will also be cast to assist with the technical aspects of the production.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre touring productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props and makeup. The MCT Tour Actor/Directors will conduct rehearsals throughout the week.

Guest Columnist Hello, Well, after the fiasco at the airpor t we did make it to Alaska. Flew into Juneau, then on a floatplane to the fishing lodge.

Missed most of the days fishing, but dang sure caught enough fish to get us excited about the next four days!

Now, you know I don’t care to travel much. Medora is thir ty miles and I hate to venture that far.

But the trip to Alaska was a once in a lifetime, at least at my age, trip with my son, three grandsons, a nephew and his son, and a brother-in-law.

That’s four adults and four kids. We were worried about the kids. Turned out they behaved better than the adults. That will happen.

I’ve watched TV shows that will show Alaska. Now granted, we only saw a sliver of southeast Alaska, but just seeing that little bit makes you realize how huge and how wild Alaska is.

The spot we were in is actually a rain forest. A r ugged rain forest. In five days, we never did see the sun. Rain four days and cloudy the fifth day.

But we did fish. You couldn’t imagine the fish we caught. Halibut, salmon, rockfish, cod, and an octopus. Yes, an octopus! Evan caught a big octopus. It was

quite an experience for a kid, or even an adult.

And then the boys played with it on the deck of the boat, letting it wrap its tentacles around their arms and legs. Not this guy. I don’t care to have slither y things grabbing me by the arms.

The lodge was wonder ful. No TV. That was one of the best things. The food was out of this world.

Breakfast at seven.

Supper at seven in the evening. Pack a lunch for on the boat. And fish from eight until five. That’s a lot of fishing for a landlubber like me.

If you are interested in where we were, go on youtube and search “Alaska’s fishing paradise”. Or google Whalers Cove Lodge.

After the first day on the boat, you could see where the lodge got its name. You were always in sight of at least one whale. We weren’t whale watching, but a humpback

did spend about twenty minutes fifty yards from our boat one afternoon. And it kept slapping the water with a huge fin. One guide thought it was tr ying to stun baitfish. Another thought it was a method of communication.

I just know it was a big and what a wonder ful sight to behold.

I was visiting with a neighbor about our fishing trip the other day and gave him a package of halibut.

He told of when he was rough necking and was working with a brother-inlaw. This relative had never been too far from the farm. They had stopped at a restaurant to eat and the in-law ordered the halibut steak. Nice. When the waitress sat the halibut steak in front of him and turned to leave, he exclaimed, “ Wait! I ordered the halibut steak!

A t 3 p. m . the bus was scheduled to leave Bismarck and a r r i v e i n Gr a n d Fo r k s f o r a Tu e s d a y t o u r o f the Mill and a return to Bismarck that afternoon.

Both institutions have seen leaner years. In fact, many state policymakers thought that one o r t h e o t h e r, p e r h a p s both, would fold before the end of the first decade. The whole situation was precarious.

houses of the legislature and passed their bills which were quickly signed by an NPL g ov e r n o r.

But the true believers in private enterprise, manifesting themselves as t h e I n d e p e n d e n t Vo t e r s Association, dug in and initiated measures to repeal the radical legislation. All six repealing measures were barely defeated, saving the League program.

Ho w e v e r, all was not joy for the L e a g u e . T h e I VA h a d also filed recall petitions against the three NPL officials who ran the Industrial Commission under which the League programs were to be implemented. All three were recalled, leaving the Bank and the Mill in the hands o f t h e I VA .

Fo r t u n a t e l y, t h e t h r e e n e w officials honored the vote by which the League programs survived and made every effort to make them

successful.

But the Bank and the Mill were not turning great profits for the general fund. Since the Mill was the more anemic of the two, some legislators proposed privatizing the Mill more often than the Bank because the Mill was barely breaking even.

All of these efforts failed, probably because the private enterprise crowd was sort of proud of having a state-owned Bank and Mill. Other states had tried state ownership or state partnerships with banks but they all fell by the wayside.

We u s e d to have Russian trade teams come to the Mill to consider buying wheat. I used to wonder what was going through their heads as we bragged about our socialistic institution.

They probably expected a picture of Lenin hanging behind the n e x t d o o r.

To d a y, the founding NPLers would be dancing in h e a v e n , i f t h a t’s w h e r e t h e y w e n t , ov e r t h e success of the Bank and the Mill.

The Bank, rumored to be the biggest bank between Seattle and Minneapolis, offers scores of creative programs for farmers, businesses, banks, students and l o c a l g ov e r n m e n t s . It deserves its new quarters.

The M i l l ’s g r o s s – n o w p a y attention – is now $340,000,000 annually a n d g r o w i n g . It’s t h e b i g g e s t m i l l i n No r t h and South America and t h a t’s n o t a r u m o r. T h e Mill, too, deser ves new quarters.

The tourists on the NPL bus have a right to celebrate.

Opening day for ducks, geese, coots and mergansers for North Dakota residents is Sept. 21. Nonresidents may begin hunting waterfowl in North Dakota Sept. 28.

The daily limit on pintails is reduced from two to one.

River otter season limit is increased from 15 to 20.

The fisher trapping season is expanded almost statewide, except for Bottineau and Rolette counties, which remain closed.

The tree squirrel season is extended to Feb. 29.

Veterans and members of the Armed Forces (including National Guard and Reserves) on active duty, who possess a resident hunting license, may hunt waterfowl Sept. 14-15.

The prairie chicken and sage grouse seasons will remain closed due to low populations.

In accordance with state law, nonresidents are not allowed to hunt on Game and Fish Department wildlife management areas or Private Land Open To Sportsmen areas from Oct. 12-18.

Pronghorn Season Set North Dakota’s 2019 pronghorn hunting season is set, with 1,330 licenses available in 12 open units.

Bruce Stillings, big game management supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, said license numbers and open units are up from last year, when the department allocated 1,075 licenses and had 10 open units.

“Our recently completed aerial survey indicated the pronghorn population is up 4 percent from last year,” Stillings said. “A combination of milder winter conditions since 2010-11, closed seasons from 201013, and improved fawn production and survival since 2013 have resulted in the population reaching a level that is able to support a higher harvest this fall.”

While the overall population is similar to last year, Stillings said numbers increased to a level able to support harvest in two key units in the northern badlands.

“Hunting units 1D and 10A will be open for the first time since 2009,” Stillings said.

“Pronghorn have also increased in hunting Unit 4A, where doe/ fawn licenses will be issued to address areas of high pronghorn density and provide additional hunting opportunities.”

similar to last year and equal to the long-term average. The buck-todoe ratio of 38 bucks per 100 does remains stable and above the population objective, Stillings said.

A total of 110 licenses are available in unit 1A, 115 in 1D, 90 in 2A, 60 in 2B, 20 in 3A, 115 in 3B, 425 in 4A, 50 in 4C, 70 in 5A, 160 in 6A, 75 in 7A and 40 in 10A. All licenses are valid for any pronghorn, except in 4A where 100 of the 425 are allocated for doe/fawn.

In addition, in accordance with state law five licenses are allocated to eligible organizations.

Each unit will once again have a season that is split into an early “bow-only” portion, and a later gun/bow season.

The bow-only portion of the season is from Aug. 30 (noon) – Sept.

22. Anyone who draws a license can hunt pronghorn with a bow in the unit printed on the license.

From Oct. 4 (noon) – Oct. 20, hunters who still have a valid license can use legal firearms or archery equipment, and again must stay in the assigned unit.

Only North Dakota residents are eligible to apply for a 2019 pronghorn license. Hunters who have accumulated bonus points and choose not to apply this year will not lose their points, but will not accrue one for next year.

However, hunters who do not want a license in 2019 have the option to purchase a bonus point on the application.

Applicants can apply online at the Game and Fish Department website, gf.nd.gov, or by calling 800-406-6409.

Applicants who do not have access to a computer can submit the application at a public service location such as a public library, stop at a Game and Fish office, or request help from a friend, relative or neighbor.

The pronghorn license fee is $30 for ages 16 and older, and $10 for under age 16. Applicants for a pronghorn lottery license must be at least 12 years of age on or before December 31, 2019. The deadline for submitting applications is Aug. 7.

Early Canada Goose Dates Announced North Dakota’s early Canada goose season

Limits and shooting hours are different from the regular season, while the zone boundaries remain the same.

Shooting hours for early Canada goose are onehalf hour before sunrise to sunset daily.

Residents need a $5 early Canada goose license and a general game and habitat license. Also, residents age 16 and older need a small game license.

Nonresidents need only a $50 early Canada goose license, and the license is valid statewide without counting against the 14-day regular season license.

Harvest Information Program certification is required, and beginning Sept. 1 a federal duck stamp for hunters age 16 and older is also needed. Those who HIP registered to hunt the spring light goose conservation order in North Dakota do not have to register with HIP again, as it is required in each state only once per year.

Waterfowl rest areas, closed to hunting during the regular season, are open during the early season. Most land in these rest areas is private, so hunters may need permission to access them.

intended to reduce local Canada goose numbers, which remain high. Game and Fish is attempting to provide additional hunting opportunities that can increase pressure on locally breeding Canada geese.

Swan Hunt Applications Online Swan hunters who are interested in applying for a 2019 license can now submit an online application through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s website, gf.nd.gov.

North Dakota residents and nonresidents are eligible to apply. The resident swan license is $10, while the nonresident fee is $30. The deadline for applying is Aug. 14.

The statewide tundra swan hunting season is Sept. 28 - Dec. 29.

Successful applicants will receive a tag to take one swan during the season. Since swans are classified as waterfowl, nonresidents may hunt them only during the period their nonresident waterfowl license is valid.

Hunters should note that Game and Fish will not mail swan licenses to successful applicants until after they purchase a valid 2019-20 hunting license. All swan hunters, regardless of age, are required to have a general game and habitat license. In addition, nonresidents must have a waterfowl license and residents age 16 and older need a small game license.

t’s the middle of I summer and hunting seasons are still

weeks away.

In the meantime, North Dakota Game and Fish Department biologists are busy with their summer upland game and waterfowl brood surveys that will provide some perspective on hunting prospects for when the seasons do open.

The brood surveys are either validation of what spring surveys of waterfowl, pheasants and grouse may have already established for expectations, or they might identify a reason why production numbers aren’t headed in the same direction as spring numbers.

For instance, an increase in the spring pheasant crowing count from one year to the next doesn’t necessarily mean more pheasants for that fall’s season, compared to the previous

year. Weather and habitat conditions are key factors that determine whether brood production and subsequent fall population estimates are up or down.

Just to get a sense of anticipation going, here’s a recap of where this year’s spring counts came in.

Waterfowl The Game and Fish Department’s annual spring breeding duck survey conducted in May indicated an index of 3.4 million birds, up 20 percent from last year.

Migratory game bird supervisor Mike Szymanski said the index was the 22nd highest on record and stands 40 percent above the long-term (1948-2018) average.

“Breeding duck numbers generally trend with wetland conditions,” Szymanski said. “The large number of ducks in North Dakota this spring can again be attributed to the large number of ducks that we have been producing for many years.”

Survey results indicated numbers for all primary species were up from their 2018

estimates, including mallards (16 percent), green-winged teal (81 percent) and ruddy ducks (57 percent).

All other ducks ranged from 5 (scaup) to 40 percent (pintails) above last year’s numbers.

All species, with the exception of pintails and blue-winged teal, were above the 71year average.

The number of temporary and seasonal wetlands was substantially higher than last year, as figures show the spring water index was up 46 percent.

Pheasants and Grouse North Dakota’s spring pheasant population index was up about 6 percent statewide. The primary regions holding pheasants ranged from up 14 percent in the southeast and up 17 percent in the northwest, to down 8 percent in the southwest.

“We are still seeing the effects of the drought of 2017 that resulted in low chick survival,” said R.J.

Gross, upland bird biologist for the Game and Fish Department.

“Typically, a spring pheasant population is composed primarily of yearling roosters with nearly as many 2-year-olds, and currently we have very few 2-year-old roosters.”

Pheasant crowing counts are conducted each spring throughout North Dakota.

Observers drive specified 20-mile routes, stopping at predetermined intervals, and counting the number

of pheasant roosters heard crowing over a two-minute period during the stop.

For sharp-tailed grouse, observers count male grouse on select dancing grounds each spring.

This year, the numbers were up 9 percent compared to last year.

And now we wait until the brood surveys are finished, to see if fall population estimates will match the positive direction identified in spring counts.
