s summer winds to an end, kids across the county are looking forward to their first day of school. This year, however, it’s not just the kids who are excited to start a new school year.

Bowman School Superintendent Wayne Heckaman is the newest addition to the Bowman County School District, and much like the kids, he is also excited for his first day of class at the Bowman school.

“There’s always that excitement at the beginning of the year,” said the new superintendent.

Heckaman is a self described “North Dakota kid.” Not only did

hether it was dinosaurs roaming the land or pioneers establishing a new community, Bowman County is home to an exciting history. The hidden treasures that harbor this local history are actually easy to find at the Pioneer Trails Regional Museum in Bowman.

Although the museum has many artifacts and historical stories they wish to display, space has become an issue. Many historic pieces are currently in storage, and introducing more displays would simply overcrowd the existing space.

To remedy the situation, the museum has decided to expand their facility. Pioneer Trails Regional Mu-

seum Board President Dean Pearson explained that the board is in the beginning stages of connecting the museum’s east storage building to the actual museum with a new walkway through the alley.

“We have lots of items that should be on display, but we just don’t have the space right now,” said Pearson.

Luckily, golfers in Bowman looking to improve their golf swing throughout the season have a new option, simulated golf.

Already, the east storage building has been renovated for the eventual installment of new historical displays.

“We just finished inside renovations of the east building,” said Pearson. “It has new air conditioning, heating, and newly sheet rocked walls; it’s ready for brand new displays.”

The next step toward expanding the museum, he said, is closing off the alley and creating a new walkway to link the two museum buildings.

Right now, plans for the expansion are in their beginning stages and subject to change. Even still, the intent of the walkway is to make the expanded museum more manageable with a similar number of employees.

Pearson added that the board has tentative plans to rearrange the exhibits in the museum once the expansion is complete, with pre-homestead era exhibits located in the entrance building and everything else in the back.

“If you were

going to find information on the railroad, schools, or churches, you would go to the new building,” said the board president.

“Whereas if you were looking at early ranches, Indian history, paleontology, or archeology you would look in the current building.”

So far, the city hasn’t weighed in on the building plans just yet; nevertheless, Pearson said that he is sure that, once the logistics and requirements are figured out, the building plans will soon be approved.

“It’s just a matter of making sure to cross the T’s and dot the I’s,” he said.

Because the project is still in the beginning stages, Pearson said he was unsure of when it will be exactly finished. At the latest he guessed that the walkway structure would be erected by the end of next fall.

In addition to building time, Pearson said that the board plans on taking adequate time to make the new historic displays professional.

“There’s no rush for it,” he said.

“We don’t just want the historic object, we want the entire story with it.”

Heckaman attributed his love for education to the example set by his parents.

“Both of my parents were educators,” he said, “I grew up in the with the system all around me, so education was just a normal path to choose.”

Before working as superintendent, Heckaman worked as a men’s basketball coach, teacher, assistant principal, and high school principal at different schools across the state.

Ultimately, Heckaman said that it was both the available career opportunity and his love of the western region of North Dakota brought him and his

family to Bowman.

“I’m really blessed to have this opportunity,” he said. “The West is where I met my wife, and I’ve always known that this part of the state has been good to me.”

Although the new superintendent just moved to Bowman in June, Heckaman said that he has already started to make friends and connections in both the Rhame and Bowman communities.

“The few weeks that we have been here have been a really great time,” he said. “A lot of really good people have come up to my family and I and really made us feel welcome.”

As superintendent, Heckaman said that, as the school year progresses, he is excited to get acclimated with the school and the community, identify the goals of the district and

eventually work with the district and the community to move forward to reach those goals.

“When any individual steps into a new position, it’s always reflective to see the moving parts of the school district,” he said.

“My role is getting to know community members and knowing how both the community and school district can work together.”

Even with the impending approach of the first day of school, Heckaman said he and the staff are ready for the new school season.

“It’s coming quick, but we will be ready for it,” he said. “You will notice that educators are already setting up their rooms and we have already started football practice.

The kids and staff are excited. That’s the special part of being an educator.”

Fall Harvested Produce to be Exhibited at Threshing Bee The Bowman County Fair Association has teamed up with Yesterday’s Farmers to give local growers an opportunity to display their fall harvested produce and crops. Since the Bowman County fair is typically in mid-July, many locally grown vegetables, fruits, and grains are not ready to be harvested. Growers will have the opportunity to showcase their accomplishments on September 7th and 8th at the 2019 Yesterday’s Farmers Threshing Bee. Gardening and grain exhibits can be entered at the Yesterday’s Farmers Building on the west side of Bowman on Saturday, September 7th from 9 to 10 a.m. Judged exhibits will be on display at 1 p.m. Premiums will be paid by the Bowman County Fair Association and will be mailed to recipients after the event. Bowman Lodge can provide more winter activities for the community when North Dakota freezes over.

“In summertime there is tons of stuff, but in the winter you can get really limited in the activities you can do,” said Kulseth. “We want that this new simulator to provide our hotel guests and community members a new amenity.”

So how does it work? Inside the lodge, golfers get to swing a real golf club and hit a ball in an enclosed area and the simulator does the rest.

Both camera and laser equipment in the simulator capture how the golfer swings their club and then recreates the shot on a screen, like a videogame. After, the simulator records a video on how the golfer hit

the ball and gives indicators like ball speed, the angle of the shot, and how many yards the ball would have traveled on a real golf course.

The simulation even allows golfers to experience famous golf courses from around the world, like Pebble Beach.

league using the simulator.

“It would be just like the league at the country club,” she said. “The simulator would keep track of the league and at the end of the year we would have prizes.”

In addition to golfing, the machine has different games for all ages including soccer, baseball, football, a hunting simulator, and even zombie dodge ball.

The machine is open to both the community and Bowman Lodge visitors. People interested in using the simulator can rent the room for $25 an hour and multiple people can use it at the same time.

“It’s an just another addition to the hotel,” said Kulseth. “My main focus is that it gets used by the community. It’s just another thing to do for the community.”

Sunrise Foundation awards scholarships he Sunrise T Foundation Board of Directors

awarded five area college students with scholarships towards their healthcare education. To qualify for the scholarship, college students must be from the counties of Bowman, Slope, Harding, or Western Adams. The scholarships are awarded to college students who are pursuing a career in healthcare and have successfully completed all requirements for at least their freshman year of college.

The 2019 Scholarship winners are: Mariah Septon (Nursing - University of Mary); Bailey McGee (Nursing – Western Dakota Technology); Cosha Bechtold (NursingDickinson State University); Taylor Hewson (Occupational Therapy – University of Mary); and Sarah Freitag (Occupational Therapy – University of Mary).

Obituary

Barb in their motor home and motoring around on his Rascal scooter.

He enjoyed his coffee group, and his memberships in the American Legion and E.A.A.

Larry G. Vail

Larry G. Vail, 86, passed away on Aug. 7, 2019 at the Hospice House in Rapid City.

Larry Gene Vail was born on Feb. 25, 1933 at Bowman, North Dakota. He enjoyed his grade school years at Star School and graduated from Bowman High School in 1951.

Larry attended Wahpeton State School of Science until he was called into the Army.

After two years in the Army, Larry returned home where he worked for Bowman Implement.

In 1955 he met Barbara Blackmore, a teacher from Leeds, North Dakota, and they were married on July 27, 1957.

Larry and Barb recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.

After their marriage, Larry returned to and graduated from Wahpeton State.

During the next several years, he worked for Electrical Cooperatives in North and South Dakota. In 1967 the Vails moved to Rapid City, SD where he worked for 27 years at West River Electric.

Upon his retirement, Larry loved traveling with

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; daughter, Patti (Harvey) Miller and granddaughter, Amber; daughter, Laurie (Heath) Lowry; brother, Lanny (Carol) Vail; brother-inlaw, Jerry Fisher; beloved cousins, niece and nephews.

Graveside services are set for 11:00am Wed., Aug. 14, 2019 at the Bowman Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at the Assembly of God Church in Bowman.

Bowman County State’s Attorney Andrew Weiss joined the meeting at 9:00 am. Weiss provided an update to the recent Supreme Court decision for a retrial of the Swanson/West Homicide case.

Jeffers made a motion to reappoint Pam Hestekin as a board member to the Little Missouri Scenic River Commission for a three-year term effective October 1, 2019 through September 30, 2022. John McGee was appointed as a proxy in the event Hestekin is absent from a meeting.

Bowman County Water Resource Board member Leland Sather met to outline the 2020 budget.

Bowman Economic Development Board members Josh Stuchl, Scott Hardy, Duane Bowman, Kevin Buchholz, Executive Director Teran Doerr, staff members Laura Weber, Kristi Blazer, Brooklyn Engelhart and City of Bowman Council President Lyn James met to present the 2020 budget.

City of Bowman Council President Lyn James, city auditor Peggy Allen and city zoning board members David Mosbrucker, Myron Vail and Ryan Shear met to discuss the possibility of combining the city zoning director duties with the county co-planning and

zoning director’s duties. Bowman County State’s Attorney Andrew Weiss was also present for the discussion. Statistical information was shared and an outline of the city zoning duties. The county commission will review the information presented and report back to the city once a decision has been made.

Theodore Roosevelt Expressway Executive Director Cal Klewin provided an update and expressed appreciation for the county’s past membership and financial support and inquired if the county would consider donating at a higher level for 2020.

Bowman/Slope Multi-County Social Service District Director Shonda Schwartz met to provide an update to the zone structure and the potential expenses that the county will be responsible for paying, that previously was not a part of the department’s direct costs.

Bowman County Highway Superintendent Shane Biggs and Gary Brennan and Lucas Doerr, of Brosz Engineering, met to provide updates. Biggs stated that the gravel hauling is going fairly well.

Chip sealing will be taking place the first part of August.

Abrahamson made a motion to approve the Fox Hills Fencing Change Order No. 1F, which is a reduction in the final quantities, for a decrease of $5,207.95, amending the original contract bid from $200,000 to $194,990.45.

Buchmann seconded the motion.

A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried.

Braaten made a motion to approve the Central Specialties, Inc. Change Order No. 3, for an increase of $2,860.00 to excavate existing garbage material from Borrow Area # 5 and bury with a minimum of six feet cover. Abrahamson seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried.

Authorization was given to Biggs to close the Griffin Road temporarily for road construction. If the road is closed Biggs will provide notification to all emergency responders and provide a notice to the public.

Bowman County Airport Authority board members Rod Schaaf and Bob Morland met to outline their 2020 budget. A Land Use Compliance inspection was completed on June 19, 2019, with federal and state representatives. The inspection results will be received in the near future.

Discussion was held on the notification received from the North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund (NDIRF) that the North Dakota Fire and Tornado Fund (NDFT) administration will transition from the North Dakota Insurance Department into NDIRF. Bowman County is asked to select the local agent of their choice to handle the policy matters for 2020-2021 coverage period. Abrahamson made a motion to designate Rebecca Mason as our agent.

Braaten seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried.

Bowman County Auditor Sandra Tivis will submit a letter of instruction and the form to each entity for the 2021 budget cycle.

Richard Frederick, Slope County Emergency Manager, met with the commissioners to discuss his position. The requirements to participate in the emergency manager performance grant are requiring more time. He feels that it needs to be a full time job or if it remains a part time job the performance grant and state requirements should be dropped.

Discussion was held on the progress of the changes with social services as we transition to zones. Commissioner Ouradnik presented a motion to appoint Commissioner Teske as the zone representative for the Slope County Commission. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Sonsalla and passed with all in favor.

Commissioner Sonsalla gave an update on the Multi-County Correction Center and New England Women’s Prison.

Commissioner Sonsalla presented a motion to contribute $500 to the Slope Farmer’s Fair. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Teske and passed with all in favor.

The remainder of the morning was spent in reviewing budgets.

Now with fall getting close you have kids getting ready for school. I think football was invented to make young boys more anxious to go back to school. Especially if you live in Harding County, South Dakota.

The Ranchers take their football seriously.

A lot of my

friends have kids or grandkids heading off to college. Some close.

Some traveling across the nation. If you are in agriculture this is a bad idea.

Because the kids will learn something. And you know, as well as I do, how things should be done.

You’ve always done them that way, and your dad did it that way, and his dad did it that way.

They topped the market. But the market was poor. That happens a lot when you are in agriculture.

The son went

over the records dutifully. They had lost $178 per head! He took the books over to Dad and went over all the input costs, the death loss, interest on loans…

When he finished, his Dad calmly looked at him and said, “Son, we will never do that again.”

The son felt bad and quietly replied, “ We will never feed cattle again?”

“No”, Dad replied, “ We will never keep records again.’

Swan Application Deadline Aug. 14

Swan hunters are reminded the deadline for submitting an application for the 2019 season is Aug. 14.

Applicants must submit an online application through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s website, gf.nd.gov. North Dakota residents and nonresidents are eligible to apply. The resident swan license is $10, while the nonresident fee is $30.

The statewide tundra swan hunting season is Sept. 28 - Dec. 29.

Successful applicants will receive a tag to take one swan during the season. Since swans are classified as waterfowl, nonresidents may hunt them only during the period their nonresident waterfowl license is valid.

Hunters should note that Game and Fish will not mail swan licenses to successful applicants until after they purchase a valid 2019-20 hunting license. All swan hunters, regardless of age, are required to have a general game and habitat license. In addition, residents age 16 and older need a small game license and nonresidents must have a waterfowl license.

HIP Registration Required for Migratory Bird Hunters Migratory bird hunters of all ages are reminded to register with the Harvest Information Program prior to hunting ducks, geese, swans, mergansers, coots, cranes, snipe, doves and woodcock.

Hunters must register in each state for which they are licensed to hunt.

In addition, the free printed PLOTS guides will be available in mid-August at most license vendors and other locations throughout the state.

The guide will feature about 791,000 PLOTS acres. Because the guide is printed in mid-August, some PLOTS tracts highlighted in the guide may have been removed from the program since the time of printing.

DAKOTA DATEBOOK: Hebron Brick Dakota Datebook written by Merry Helm August 19, 2019 — In the early years of North Dakota, there was a severe shortage of building materials, which is why many people made their homes from prairie sod. In some areas of the state, however, a good grade of clay was discovered, and within a few years, at least 18 brick factories sprung up. It was on this date in 1904 that the Hebron Fire and Pressed Brick Factory was founded.

Hebron was settled as a spin-off of a successful campaign in New Salem, where the NP Railroad worked with the German Evangelical Colonization Society to recruit settlers.

In 1882, Society pastors from Illinois and Wisconsin had sent recruitment pamphlets to other Evangelical pastors and also wrote optimistic letters to German-language newspapers.

An agent in New York caught German immigrants coming off the boat, promising them a town with a church, school, and “Christian hotel.” By the following spring, New

Salem had two hundred new settlers, and in 1885, the Society established a second colony 33 miles west called Hebron.

The majority of those who ended up settling in Hebron were from Johannestal, Crimea, in South Russia. The town’s founder was generally considered to be 31-yearold Ferdinand Lutz. Less than ten years later, Lutz and his partner, Charles Weigel, started the Hebron brick factory. Within a few years, their proposed budget of $50,000 quickly escalated as equipment and other improvements were added.

The clay has been coming from the Bear Den Member of the Golden Valley Formation, which is about 58-64 million years old. At first, it was brought to the factory by horse and wagon.

A couple different methods were used to form bricks – some were dry-pressed and others were made of “stiff mud,” which used powdered clay mixed with water. The clay was cut into bricks and then fired – or “baked” – in large coal-burning kilns for many days before hardening into usable bricks.

In 1913, the plant expanded, and 12 continuous kilns were built into an outdoor embankment.

With arched brick openings, the side-by-side kilns resembled an ancient Roman aqueduct.

That year, the factory turned out slightly fewer than five million bricks. By the following year, railroad cars replaced horse-drawn wagons, and 8,500,000 bricks were produced by 1916, with a potential to turn out as many as 13,000,000.

Market conditions during World War I hit the factory pretty hard, and it became almost impossible to keep the plant solvent.

Bankruptcy looked likely, and the stockholders authorized the sale of the property. The “general and sales office” was moved to Fargo in 1921, and five years later, the sales manager, the plant superintendent and the president were all replaced. Disaster hit just a few months later when the major portion of the operating plant burned to the ground. Still, the company hung on. The factory was rebuilt, converting to gas-fired kilns.

Since then, the company has survived the Great Depression, another world war, has gone through five different owners, and is estimated to have manufactured one billion bricks.

After more than a hundred years of existence, Hebron Brick is not only the only surviving brick factory in the state, it is also the oldest manufacturing company, of any kind, in North Dakota.

Early Oologists Dakota Datebook written by Merry Helm August 20, 2019 — By the 1890s, Stump Lake in northeast North Dakota was a Mecca for waterfowl hunters, and a magnificent three-story hotel called the Wamduska House provided room and board to hunters from as far away as New York City.

Oologists, too, found the area ripe for the picking.

What’s an oologist, you ask? That’s a person who collects birds’ eggs – or used to, anyway.

One collector, Alf Eastgate, got married in 1893 and later wrote, “As money was not as plentiful as hard work, my wife said to wait until spring and she would go with me on a collecting trip.” The following year, the couple arrived at Stump Lake, and over the next months, they collected both eggs and bird skins. When Eastgate was injured in an accident in mid-June, the couple decided to stay and settled on the south end of Stump Lake.

A frequent visitor at the Eastgate farm was a Grand Forks county clerk and fellow collector, Holton Shaw. The two men had been collecting bird eggs together since 1892. In fact, in 1895, they and five East Coast collectors spent four months on an oology expedition, during which (they later said) they were “in the field every day

collecting and noting the migratory and breeding species of this territory.”

During one of his expeditions, Eastgate wrote: “Found the nest and eggs of Ruby throated hummingbird It was a climb for your life up a small poplar leaning over the road on a dead branch leaning way out about 35 or 40 feet We got in to Carpenter Lake. . . takes about 5 hours to drive 12 miles by section line so you can guess how the road winds and twists around the hills with a mud hole or creek at the foot of every hill. . . It is my sorry work to look for a nest after driving over the prairies. . . We have been out 20 days and have 159 skins...driving 125 miles over as bad roads as you want to use but every thing else has been in our favor – fine weather and no mosquitos to speak of have not had to use our netting one night.”

The oologists provided documentation about each set of eggs found, including the collector’s name, date, weather conditions and location of where the eggs were found. In the early years, oologists would often kill and skin parent birds for proving the authenticity of the eggs. Interestingly, it was a matter of “scientific honor” to take every egg in the nest.

During his hunts with Eastgate, Shaw collected eggs not just for himself but also for selling and

trading with other oologists. For example, on one day in June 1893, he found 29 common tern’s nests for a total of 85 eggs; 16 sets were to fill orders from other collectors, and 11 sets were for a “private collection” – perhaps his own.

Although the area had an abundance of birds, by 1912 Stump Lake was the nation’s last known breeding ground for the white-winged scoter, and needless to say, oologists got good returns on scoter eggs. Whether collectors were part of the problem or not, the bird soon disappeared from North Dakota. Bird enthusiasts noticed other species start to dwindle, as well.

Teddy Roosevelt recognized Stump Lake’s importance as a migratory breeding ground, and in 1905, he set aside five islands in Stump Lake – totaling 28 acres – as a national bird reserve. It was the third such reserve in the country. Eastgate, who was still living at Stump Lake, became the reserve’s first warden, and shortly after, both he and Shaw stopped the practice of collecting eggs. As opposition to egg hunting grew, oologists started using cameras to document their research instead of robbing nests.

It’s pretty safe to say that our feathered friends have appreciated the change. ###
