Uptown Bar & Grill, opened 7 months ago, now up for sale By Bryce Martin
Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net It was an emotional moment for Kara Longland-
Slagle last week as she announced that she would close the doors to her Bowman business, only seven months after it opened. Uptown Bar and Grill, located at 13 First Ave. NE,
closed its doors June 27 because business wasn’t strong enough for the restaurant to pay its bills, according to Longland-Slagle, owner of Uptown. The bar and grill opened last November to positive reviews. It occupied the former space of Hawk’s Landing but moved away from its predecessor’s steak house atmo-
sphere with a remodel and updated menu to provide its customers with a more family friendly place to eat. Longland-Slagle made a simple post to Facebook last week announcing that the business was officially up for sale. “I have so much emo-

Relay for Life brightens sky over Bowman By Bryce Martin
Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement. Bowman County joined that movement last week as it hosted the 2015 Southwest North Dakota Relay for Life, marking the event’s return to Bowman since the city took a hiatus from hosting in 2010. During a Relay event, participants and survivors celebrate what they’ve overcome; people lost to the disease are remembered; and people who have fought or are fighting cancer are honored. The event inspires participants to take action against a disease that has taken too much. But Relay for Life is not just a fundraiser—it is a moment for people to come together as a community and show support for those who need it most. That was the attitude during this year’s Relay for Life, held June 26 and June 27 at James Field in Bowman. Ten teams registered to walk during the event, totaling over 100 participants. Over $20,000 was raised by this year’s event, which includes

Despite the event’s planning committee getting a rather late start to organizing the event, it was a big success, according to Sue Abrahamson. Abrahamson, who organized the survivor’s supper and had a big hand in the planning of the main event, gave a tear-filled speech during which she detailed

Tornado spotted during severe summer storm By Bryce Martin
Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net Mimicking last week’s severe storms on the far west portion of Bowman County, the cities of Bowman and Rhame received
its share of severe summer weather this week with golf-ball-size hail and even a confirmed tornado. Emergency sirens sounded in Bowman shortly before 7 p.m. June 30, suggesting residents take cover as a massive storm system approached
from the northwest. While only minimal damage was reported (See the photo of a severely bent flag pole on Page 2) law enforcement confirmed after the bulk of the storm passed south through the city of Bowman that a tornado was
