Actor hikes White Butte for disease awareness

Michael J. Fox stops in Amidon as part of Tour de Fox By Cole Benz

For the Pioneer cbenz@countrymedia.net AMIDON — In the fight against Parkinson’s Disease there are a lot of big names, but one seems to stand out: Michael J. Fox. Fox, known around the world

for his hit films and television acting, brought the fight to North Dakota on July 12 when he and a group of Parkinson’s survivors and supporters hiked up White Butte, the state’s highest point, as part of the Tour de Fox. “The breadth and the scope of this is incredible,” Fox told the Pioneer regarding the tour.

BCHS tweaks classes for upcoming year

The magnitude of the expedition should not be underestimated and Fox admitted he has to sit back and think about it every now and then just to wrap his head around it. Fox briefly took a break from acting after he received the dev-

AT THE BOWMAN COUNTY FAIR

By Bryce Martin

Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net Incoming Bowman County School Superintendent Tyler Senn began his tenure with a fresh approach to changing some parts of the high school’s curriculum. Senn, who officially steps into the role of superintendent on July 20, discussed some ideas during the July 9 Bowman County School Board meeting that he and Bowman counselor Pam Fisher worked on for the coming school year. Bowman County hasn’t met the state’s benchmark for annual yearly progress in the last two years. The school has since been placed in a probationary period by the state—if state testing scores don’t increase, the school’s state-allocated funds would be reduced. It appeared during last week’s meeting that the school is setting some focus on tweaking the schedule of classes and graduation requirements to allow for a greater breadth of high school education for students. The preliminary efforts, according to Senn, were to ensure students would be able to take on different classes through their high school career, in preparation for graduation and their potential post-secondary schooling. One of the changes focused on health education. Senn explained to the school board that he and Fischer decided to forego offering a health class for the next year, which he said would allow for some flexibility for sophomores this year. Health classes would then resume in the 2016-17 school season as a class for juniors and seniors. “It’s going to allow more of an elective option in the junior and senior year,” Senn said. “We thought it was a better option going for some of those kids going into health careers and things like that.” Bowman County schools also currently require that students take two credits of physical education and one

he audience grew quiet following Keith Raymond’s magic act Saturday night; they knew who was coming next onto the fair’s stage. A mist of fog stirred the silence and cheers erupted throughout the All Seasons Arena. Onto the brightly lit stage stepped a local girl, clad in black, clasping a microphone. It was more than two decades earlier when the county was first introduced to this girl’s musical talent. Her family was well known in the Bowman County community and so when they debuted their young daughter into the

musical world, à la the stage at the Bowman County Fair, it was love at first sight. Since then, the girl’s talent has soared and her local fan base has become larger and

stronger. That girl, now a 34-yearold woman, is the one and only Kat Perkins. Her 75-minute performance during the Bowman

County Fair on July 11 was indeed the highlight of the entertainment for many this year. Hordes of people came out, young and old, just to see their local native blast her hits live on stage. It was an albeit smaller venue than Perkins has strutted throughout her blossoming career, but this was one of the most important—she didn’t want to disappoint. From the roaring applause and chanting of her name at the close of her performance, it was clear she had not. Leading up to the performance that day, the only part that went unplanned was her crew having to re-mix everything after her sound board was fried. The power
