It is rare that a bus of students on their way to a tournament gets a police escort down Main Street and out of town, but that’s how parents arranged to send off Bowman County School’s Speech Team to their state finals this year. Thirty students took part on this year’s speech team, which was a little smaller than normal, according to the team’s coach, Amy Getz. Getz has coached the Bowman County team for 16 years, with the help of her assistant coach, Stephanie Holder, for the last 10 years. Kaylie Strandberg also helped with the team some for 2016.

More than a month has passed since the Bowman County Sheriff ’s Office discovered the body of a Minot man at Bowman Haley Dam, with few answers being released by the sheriff ’s department as the investigation continued, but on Wednesday the case was announced as closed. A combination of alcohol and prescription drug intoxication was a contributing factor with smoke inhalation being the cause of death, Bowman County Sheriff Rory Teigen said in a statement to The Pioneer shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The investigation indicated that Mahlum had started a campfire, became intoxicated, and passed out downwind of the fire, according to the statement. The weeds around the campfire started burning and the fire went over the top of Mahlum and burned his body. No lethal blunt or penetrating force of injury was detected at the scene or by the state examiner’s office. The case is now considered closed, said the sheriff. Teigen told The Pioneer last week that his office had received Michael Mahlum’s autopsy reports from the state, but they were still waiting on toxicology reports that would presumably further the investigation. Mahlum, 45, of Minot was discovered March 13 at a remote spot on the shore of Bowman Haley Dam, located about 12 miles southeast of Bowman. Some fishermen visiting the area found the body near what appeared to

The announcement follows last month’s publication of a Notice of Intent to conduct a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) that began a formal, comprehensive review of the federal coal pro-

In the first day or so of ABLE’s Earth Day recycling special, it was reported that the aluminum poundage was down for the year. But once the final numbers were figured, it turned out to be a successful year. About 5,035 pounds were collected over the three days ABLE Inc. in Bowman offered “inflated” prices for people willing to recycle their aluminum cans, which
