Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net A 25-year-old man was arrested last week after he became aggressive with of-

ficers as they attempted to question him about an incident at the Permahome Trailer Court in Bowman. Kasey Murphy of Bowman pleaded guilty April 17 in Southwest Judicial

District Court on charges of preventing arrest or discharge of other duties, a Class-A misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a Class-B misdemeanor. Judge William Herauf immediately moved into the sentencing phase after Murphy’s plea, ordering that he should be confined in Southwest Multi-County Corrections Center for

20 days, 10 of which were suspended and two credited for time served, according to court records. Murphy will serve the remaining eight days of his jail sentence before July 15 and was fined $625, the records indicated. A man living at the west end of the trailer court arrived home April 15 after walking his dog and dis-

'ONE OF THE LARGEST RACES Locals IN THE COUNTRY' BOWMAN

fix Fifth Street at no charge By Bryce Martin

It was a long day Saturday as the event saw 528 runs; Sunday saw 482.

A portion of Fifth Street Southwest closed by the city last year will be repaired and reopened after several local companies said they would complete the work for free. Three Bowman companies — Beylund Construction, ARP Enterprises and Bowman Ready Mix — began work on the road Monday. The road serves as a thoroughfare from Highway 85 to the east parking lot of Frontier Travel Center in Bowman, running between El-Vu Motel and North Winds Lodge. It was closed by the Bowman City Street Department after problems with the road were noticed last April. Todd Hofland, city street superintendent, said he received a call over the weekend from Steve Beylund, owner of Beylund Construction. Beylund told Hofland that his crews wanted to begin work on the road this week and could use help from the city’s crew. After the call got “heated,” according to Hofland, he informed Commission President Lyn James of the project. James said she was unaware of the plans. A special meeting of the Bowman City Board of Commissioners was held Monday morning to discuss the plans prior to any construction. Beylund and Jim Ridl, owner of Bowman Ready Mix, attended the meeting to clarify what the plan entailed. According to James, the city had no current plans to repair Fifth Street and wouldn’t have the funds to do so. The city’s budget has tightened as a result of uncertainty in the oil exploration market in western North Dakota. While it wasn’t an immediate priority for the city, Beylund said the road is important especially for farmers because they wouldn’t have to travel as far through town using Fifth Street. Commissioner Chuck Whitney agreed and said many people use the road. The three businesses made a decision to do the work themselves because the city wasn’t planning to take action, Bey-
